Student Resources

You can choose from three different curricula that fit the academic needs of your classroom and help students expand their understanding of the world and its people. These curricula include Eastern Hemisphere, Western Hemisphere, and Survey. The student edition, Student Journal, hands-on activities, and virtual travel assignments on Realize.com are all tied together through Essential Questions. All of these resources help students connect to, experience, and understand their world.

Instructional Model

myWorld Geography is designed to provide students with experiences they will remember for a lifetime. The instructional model of myWorld Geography incorporates Understanding by Design framework (or UbD framework) principles, developed by program consultant Grant Wiggins. The goal of the UbD framework is enduring understanding and transfer of learning. In myWorld Geography, the carefully constructed Essential Questions guide learning through all of the print, hands-on, and digital learning experiences. Using the backward design process to build enduring understandings, students explore concepts, build knowledge, and transfer ideas throughout their lessons and beyond into the real world.

11

11

Enduring Understandings

The UbD framework process begins with this goal: enduring understandings. Every activity is planned with that goal in mind. The discrete knowledge and skills students learn should help lead them to enduring understanding. The Essential Questions provide a larger framework to guide and help students understand the big ideas in each chapter. The Essential Questions also guide learning through reading, hands-on activities, digital learning experiences, and assessments in myWorld Geography.

Connect, Experience, and Understand

Through their journey, students will connect, experience, and understand the content in the program so they can transfer their knowledge to the real world. Next, let’s spend some time looking at the adventures you and your students will embark on as you travel through myWorld Geography.

13

13

Connect

By making personal connections to the people and places they learn about in myWorld Geography, students develop a deeper understanding of the content. Let’s look at how the myStory videos, Essential Questions, and myWorld in Numbers help students connect to their world.

14

14

myStory Videos

The myStory video collection provides real-life stories of teens from all over the world. Viewing the experiences of these teen ambassadors helps students develop an awareness of and connection to different cultures and regions all over the world. There is a corresponding activity in the Student Journal as well, to help solidify these connections.

15

15

Essential Questions

Each chapter begins with an Essential Question that frames the lesson and helps students unlock the answer using the stories, digital activities, interactive games, Student Journal, and hands-on projects. Essential Questions help students connect to and experience the content and gain transferable knowledge that they can use in their world.

16

myWorld in Numbers

Another way that myWorld Geography connects with students is through myWorld in Numbers. The myWorld in Numbers feature was modeled after David Smith’s book If the World Were a Village. This feature provides students with a simplified explanation of important data or statistics that they can understand. If you have a customized curriculum, it will connect to data that is customized to your specific state. In this example, students can easily comprehend the relationship of China’s farmland to the world’s population as shown in simple percentages.

17

Experience

Now that we’ve seen how the program connects content for students, let’s look at what it means to experience myWorld Geography. Students will travel across the globe using online resources on Pearson Realize.com and project-based activities.

Digital Components

Pearson Realize.com-the online digital component-provides students with interactive online support for the entire program. Online features such as the Active Atlas and Culture Close Up provide multiple models for accessing information and learning. Students also have the opportunity to complete a project based on the Essential Question using a feature called On Assignment. On Assignment allows students to take a virtual and interactive trip around the world as they gather information to complete the project. They’ll watch video interviews; work through simulations; complete animated activities; and analyze maps, data, artifacts, and primary sources. Another feature is the 21st Century Skills Online Tutor, which is a 36-lesson course. Each lesson corresponds with a specific skill that students can connect with, experience, and understand.

Activity-Based Learning

Activity-based learning inspires students to experience the content they’re studying. It helps them develop confidence and self-direction. Hands-on activities are embedded in all aspects of the program, including the student materials, the ProGuide teacher’s editions, Activity Cards, Essential Question posters, and myWorld Geography wall maps.

Understand

We talked about how to connect and experience in myWorld Geography. Next, let’s look at how students understand what they’re learning. myWorld Geography provides opportunities throughout the program for students to transfer their knowledge to new learning situations-both inside and outside of the classroom.

Let’s look at how the Student Journal, TakingITGlobal, and Pearson Realize.com online assessments allow you to assess your students’ understanding of their world.

Student Journal

The Student Journal helps students document their travel through myWorld Geography. The Essential Question from the chapter sets up the Student Journal to help students reflect, interact, and write about their experiences. The Student Journal provides pre-reading exercises using the Essential Question. It also provides graphic organizers, chapter support, and a two-page writing exercise to help students demonstrate enduring understanding and transfer their learning to their world.

Instructional Support

Differentiated Instruction and English Language Instruction support is integrated throughout the program.

The Differentiated Instruction boxes provide suggestion for four levels of learner support: L1 Special Needs, L2 Extra Support, L3 On-Level, and L4 Challenge, along with enrichment activities.

English Language Instruction boxes provide suggestion for five levels of support: ELL Beginner, Early Intermediate, Intermediate, Early Advanced, and Advanced. Teachers may view these options prior to delivering instruction, so that they are better prepared to implement them when necessary.
