    WHAT IS ROUTINES-BASED INTERVENTION?

“Routines are an important context for teaching and learning because they offer a familiar framework to build

skills for the child. RBI is a systematic approach that is individualized to accommodate the child’s skills and

    preferences within daily routines.”

    THE PLAN

….is a promise to children and families - a promise that their strengths will be recognized and built on, that their needs will be met in a way that is respectful of

their beliefs and values, and that their hopes and aspirations will be encouraged and enabled.

Family guided routines-based intervention are flexible, adaptable, and change with child and family.

Family preference guides the intervention and is the foundation.

Our role is to help the child learn and gain independence in typical activities that occur within family life.

Routines may include child-initiated play activity, daily care routines, community activity, or early

    education activity.

Ask the family how things are going now and brainstorm ways that intervention can be embedded into their daily

routines and be practiced throughout the day.

Discuss family expectations during those routines: what is going well and what is not? Help with difficult

times - any family activity/routine can be an opportunity for learning. Be an observer in these routines so you can build upon the strategies the

    CASE EXAMPLE

Janet is the mother of a 16 month old child with developmental delays related to pre-maturity. She

believes that the interventionists in her home are the experts and should spend their hour long visits with her son Nicholas. Janet leaves the room when the

interventionists arrive and uses this time to clean and make personal phone calls. How can the

interventionists encourage Janet to become more involved in their visits?
