Marine science gets festiveHIKING EVENT COINCIDESWITH FATHER’S DAY
ShireenKhalil
THE Harbour will spring
into action on the first day
of the season with the
Sydney Institute of Marine
Science’s third annual
Harbour Hike and free
Marine Festival on Sunday,
September 1.
It is also a great way to
spend Father’s Day with an
easy 12km walk around the
harbour foreshore or free
kayaking, childrens’ activi-
ties and a sustainable sea-
food barbecue.
Institute director Peter
Steinberg, of Marrickville,
said it was a great way to
experience the harbour.
FESTIVAL
■ The freeMarine festivalwillbe held at CliftonGardensReserve, 10am to4pm■ To register for thehike, visitharbourhike.com
‘‘The highlight is always
the walk along the harbour
which is a great way to
experience the natural mar-
ine environment as well as
bushland and the mix of
urban and natural environ-
ment that makes our har-
bour special,’’ Mr Steinberg
said.
Annandale seafood chef
Tom Kime will be hosting a
Cooking for Dad barbecue
on Chowder Bay.
‘‘We are joining the
Sydney Institute of Marine
Science to communicate the
message that we can protect
the future of our oceans and
still enjoy seafood, if we
make the right choices
about what species we catch
and eat,’’ Mr Kime said.
There will be food stalls,
entertainment, marine dis-
plays and activities.
The free Marine Festival
is open to the general public
and those who participate in
the hike, which raises funds
for the institute and the
research and protection of
Sydney Harbour.
