Design Intent

Functional Requirements The brief comes with a number of design challenges. The mental health services being accommodated require the building’s envelope to provide a safe and secure perimeter. It must stop patients from absconding, stop someone from getting into the building from outside, and stop passing contraband. The building must also be safe. It must not enable self-harm (forming a ligature, falling from height) and it must be robust. The building must also segregate different patient groups from one another.

Building ElevationsThe design intent is to de-stigmatise the building’s use. The aim is to provide these functional requirements in an inconspicuous manner. It is the intention to normalise the building’s appearance so that the new building might resemble high-quality residential accommodation.

Elevations

MaterialsThe proposed elevation is predominantly brick. This provides a robust material that weathers well and matches the surrounding buildings. The main feature of the elevations is the windows. It is the intention to provide a generous size, to provide light and views while creating a sense of openness. This also helps counter the relatively tall floor-to-floor building height and parapet, which might otherwise dominate the elevation.

DetailsScreening is introduced to part of the window to provide some privacy and introduce a subtle degree of ‘play’ in the elevation. This is achieved using a ‘Jali’ wall in front of the window. This also helps express the full ‘structural’ opening between the floor slab and soffit and partitions dividing each room. The effect is intended to reflect something of Block N’s window proportion while also maintaining a vertical windows proportion.

Along the East elevation a splayed ‘oriel’ window offers private views north and away from the new residential development on the adjacent former Police Station.
