Donate the umbilical cord:Why not?

The umbilical cord blood is usually eliminated after childbirth.The blood sample from the umbilical cord is not dangerous for the mother neither for the baby because it is taken when the cord has been already cut. The umbilical cord is rich ofembryonic stem cells that have the capacity to develop into every type of tissue if transplanted into a body and they help to cure a lot of diseases in particular the “immune” system (for example leukemia).The stem cells contained on the umbilical cord can be frozen and conserved for the transplant of people that didn’t have donors in the family members.At present in Italy is not permitted the establishment of banks for the collection and storage of umbilical cord’s blood for the donor himself (autologous conservation).Instead, the autologous donation “dedicated” is permitted (the donation for the baby o for a family member) in

cases of a clear medical prescription (for example if in the family there is a person affected by Onco-hematologic disease). The research in this field is in constant evolution, there are many opportu-nities for using stem cells from different altruistic donations.Therefore, we suggest the donation of umbilical's blood but we can carry out the collection for autologous conser-vation, on demand, after agreements engaged by private institutions based abroad.

How to donate the umbilical cord?

The mother who wishes to join the program must go to the "S.C. Servizio di immunoematologia e trasfusionale" around the 34 weeks of gestation, where she’ll have a conversation with a physician that will submit her some forms to fill and they will make him available for any clarification may be necessary.The consent will be sent at the S.C. Ginecologia e ostetricia that provides to insert it in the list of potential donors.The collection is done at the time of child-birth (even if it is a caesarean birth) if medical and logistics conditions are good.The mother who subscribes to the program agrees to perform the virological tests HIV, HbS Ag, HCV for the suitability of the cord blood at the moment of childbirth and 6 months later after a call. On the contrary the cord blood will be not used for the transplant. Who choose to donate umbilical blood make it available to all people waiting for the transplant.
