RadonisanaturallyoccurringradioactivegascausedbythebreakdownofuraniumandradiumandisthesecondbiggestcauseoflungcancerintheUK.

CarbonDioxideisacolourless,odourlessgasformedasaby-productofdecomposingorganicmatter.Highconcentrationscanresultinasphyxiation.

Methaneisacolourless,odourless,flammablegasformedasaby-productoforganicmaterialbreakdown.Levelsaslowas5%canbeexplosiveifignited.

CordenEPSrangeofhighquality,proprietarygasbarriersprotectreceptorsfromradon(Rn),carbondioxide(CO2),methane(CH4),hydrocarbonsandVOCs(VolatileOrganicCompounds).Hydrocarbonsarecomplementedwithavarietyofventingsystems,sealingtapes,top-hats,self-adhesiveflashingsandgasresistantDPCs.WhereVOCsorhydrocarbonsarepresent,thesystemwillbemadeupofseveralelementscombinedtoforman

integratedsystemtolimitrelianceonindividualcomponents.Thesecomponentsareseparatelydesignated,inrelationtogasprotectioninBS8485-2015(Permanentgroundgas)andCIRIAC716(VOCs)whichcanbemadeupof;

• Ventinganddilution• Barriers(floorslabtype)• Membranes(installationandverification)

VentinganddilutioncanbeincorporatedintothesystemtoformpartoftherequirementtoachievethescoreneededaccordingtoBS8485-2015.Methodsofventilationincludeaclearvoid(beamandblockflooring),polystyrenevoidformer,geo-compositevoidformeroranofinesgravellayerwithgasdrains.Ventilationwillscoreupto2.5points(BS8485-2015)Barriersincludebeamandblockflooring,reinforcedgroundbearingslab,reinforcedconcretegroundbearingraftwithminimalservicepenetrationsorfullytankedbasement.Barriersorslabtypeswillscoreupto1.5points.Acriticalpropertyofanygasmembraneisitsabilitytosurvivetheconstructionprocessintactandinagoodconditionsoastoreducethepermeationofgases/vaporstoextremelylowlevels.Themainphysicalparametersofproprietarygasmembranestobeconsideredbyallpartiesare:

• Thematerialitismanufacturedfrom(whichshouldbevirginpolymer)• Itsphysicalproperties(tensilestrength,punctureresistance)• Permeabilitytothegasinquestion.

Protectionofthegasmembraneduringconstructionisrequiredtoensurethatinstalledgasmembraneshaveretainedtheirintegrity.CordenEPSGasBarriersmeetalloftheabovecriteria.
