Exclusive Football News

Angels this weekend shockedGibraltar's small footballworld, and left it with rumoursspinning around like wildfire, rumours which have shownno clear signs of disappearingas the intrigue over how andwhere 13 players arrived andthe intentions of new allegedinvestors, at the time ofpublication publicly unknownfigures, into what is a clubstruggling to survive in thefirst division.

Rumours that Angels hadbought onboard up to fiveBrazilians were denied toCoresportgib, when ownerHoskens was asked directlyclaiming that he had calledupon friends to come andhelp him out when they foundout that his team was introuble.

Speaking to Coresport beforethe match Hosken dismissedthat any of the players were a

new investment or even ofany merit to report on.

Coresportgib caught up withAngels President EdmundHosken, when asked tocomment on the changes ofplayers and rumours ofinvestors Edmunds said, " YesI have eleven new players allfriends who are helping meout. They saw I was having abad time and they have cometo help me out," as he deniedthat there were any investorswho had brought in newplayers into the team. Askedon the investors Edmondssaid "In the future there mightbe an investor but not yet wehave to wait and see." Hiscomments came just hoursafter reports emerged ofseveral people expected to bepart of the Angels team wouldnot be allowed to be pitchside as essential paperworkrequired by the GFA had notarrived, and were therefore

not considered a part of thecoaching team, or players afact which following someresearch on at least one ofthe players leads to someinteresting contradictions onthe players origins. The playerin question having a recordworthy of reporting on.

Angels have made changes,a total of 13 changes from theteam that started the seasonin the first division. The onlysurvivors in the team being ,Villada Morente (c), Larouia,Bernal and Arroyal. OnSaturday CoreSportGib wasinformed that there were onlyeleven changes, yet the lineups from September toNovember show otherwisewhen compared to the teamlined-up on Saturday.

CoreSportGib understandsthat eleven new players wereregistered on the very lastdays of the transfer deadline.

GFA understood tohave asked for duediligence to be met

Page 3: Coresportgib issue 06

Coresportgib alsounderstands that persons whowere to stand by the pitch-side were on Saturday denieddoing so after records andpaperwork required by theGFA had as yet not arrived.

The same people werebelieved to be at least twoplayers, coaching staff andnew alleged investors.

Instructions were given to notallow these persons on thebench during the match bythe GFA as the paperworkwas as yet not in order. Agroup of around five peoplewere seen moving to thestand, three of them verymuch active participants inthe organisation, formationand playing factors of Angelsduring the match as theyprovided their instructions tothe bench from the stands. All of them very muchpersons who had beenfrequently seen at the stadiumtogether watching other firstdivision matches in recentdays with Angels FCPresident Edmonds Hoskenalongside.

The group seemed to becoaching those standing bythe touchline in what to sayand what formations orchanges to make. Somethingwhich was very clear to seejust one aisle away fromthem.

Coresportgib understandsthat the Gibraltar FootballAssociation has raisedeyebrows over the changes

being seen within the AngelsFC club, and directly enquiredas to the club affairs andchanges, as they are requiredto do. The issues werebrought before the clubPresident and have sinceseen the GFA highlight andadvise that UEFA regulations, and GFA regulations are metby the club with all duediligence requirements metbefore approval can be givenfor the active participation ofthe persons who are believedto be behind the newinvestment into the club andany new coaching staff.Coresportgib furtherunderstands that at the timeof writing no officiallyendorsed approval has as yetbeen granted with the processstill ongoing. There is noevidence, however, that thereis any wrongdoing at themoment. The only issue ofconcern being the delay in thecompletion of the duediligence process as requiredwhich has further fanned thespeculation among observersof the game.

Even though the prospect ofinvestors was denied toCoreSportgib, and is yet tomaterialise depending of thecompletion of the paperworkbeing finalised, even moreinteresting was the fact that atleast one player, from the"friends" who have joined theclub has shown up assomeone whose careermakes him more than just amere friend with nothing toreport on.

Goalkeeper Filoho WelersonRibeiro Dias wrote in his ownfacebook profile "Goodafternoon friends and family, very happy because thismonth To hit with the club"Angels fc" of gibaltrar .. Acountry in the UK . What iswithin Spain. And today firstrun for the championship ..Very happy .. And once againfootball providing good thingsand different cultures."

Filoho, nicknamed El Gigante,is a 44 year old Brazilian withEU Passport whose playingcareer stretches back to theBrazilian league in 1993, andrecently saw him taking up a

role as Goalkeeper player-coach at Al WaslFC, one of the United Arab Emirates top firstdivision clubs. His playing career saw him playin Fluminense, Americano, Ituano, Juventude(with whom he played in the CopaLibertadores), Olaria, Coritiba, America,Sampaio Corrêa and Gondomar (Portugal).

Having gone through most of the division inBrazil and played in the second division inPortugal.Wellerson has been coaching goalkeepers forFluminense, America, Sendas and recently AlWasl (UAE).

The goalkeeper is no lightweight, hisexperience clearly showing during the matchagainst Gibraltar United when he completedseveral crucial saves and showed confidenceunder the bar in a match that even before thechanges in line-up were publicly knownalready had Angels put down at 40/1 to winagainst Gibraltar United's 2/1 by some foreignbetting companies.

The whole squad similarly showed that theywere not the same type of players that hadbeen picked from a group of friends alone. Awell disciplined, well formed, structured playshowed signs of players with experience inleague football, at least at a level comparableto that in Gibraltar. Angels were a transformedside, yet the questions over how the changeshave come about not only leaves Gibraltarfootball under intrigue, it has also raisedserious questions on how easy a team failingin the league can suddenly change a wholeoutfit and bring in foreigners to fill in all thegaps under the present registration criteria.Although Angels was already a team withoutany Gibraltarian players, it is the very fact thatan all foreign player squad has replaced an allforeign player squad overnight. Now it's just a matter of time to see how farthe changes do affect the league and whetherthe 11 ( or 13 or 15) changes will have anyimpact whatsoever against bigger opponents.Angels next match is a Rock Cup round 2match against second division Pheonix. The

Rock Cup is now becoming the prestigiousreward all teams are looking for as Lincolnsteam ahead in the league making it difficultfor others to see the league as a realisticoption. However, CoreSportGib understandsthat under the present UEFA regulations onEuropean competition licence Angels isunlikely to meet any such licencerequirements under its present structure dueto its lack of youth football, reserve footballand infrastructure which would requirestringent criteria to be met for them to qualifyto participate in European competitions if theywere to by chance reach the final, somethingthat few believed possible at the end of theyear. For the club to meet UEFA requirementsthey would need to make a majorinfrastructural change with a huge investmenteven before contemplating submitting forapplication. This in itself means that therewards from the Rock Cup itself are notconsidered by observers as the incentivewhich would initially lead to a huge investmentinto a struggling club. However this leavesteams playing against Angels more concernedover their prospects of getting through to thenext round, Angels no longer being the pushover team they were when beaten 13-0 byLincoln just a few weeks ago.

What is certain is that the surprise package onSaturday has not only opened intrigue inGibraltar's football world, highlighting manyconcerns and raising many eyebrows, even ifthere is no evidence of any wrongdoing. It hasalso led to officials highlighting the importanceof vigilance within the sport and of thepossibility of revising regulations which wouldstop similar scenarios from re-emerging. Onthe other side of the coin it also probablymeans that some fortunate punter who mighthave gambled on Angels winning probablyhad a good day, as even the bettingstatisticians at the stadium were caught out bythe new line-up and what it meant to thegame. One wonders if anyone did actually puta bet on Angels winning on the day, let's hopefor their sake it was not a mere quid.

Football

Parents attending junior footballmatches this weekend weresurprised to see GSLA staffmembers call upon the referees tostop matches when planes werelanding and departing, raising

complaints amongst them over the reasons as towhy this was happening.

The stoppages did not just affect junior matches,it also included women's league matches andtraining sessions on the small pitches.

Coresportgib understands that the decision tostop matches was taken after consultation withthe RAF who had highlighted the dangers of

continued presence of footballs across therunways, posing problems to aircraft. A decisionwas made to stop all activity on the pitcheswhilst aircraft activity was present in order toreduce the risk.

Speaking to Coresportgib Minister StevenLinares explained that he was fully aware of thesituation and sympathised with those affected. He, however, pointed out that it was a matter ofassessing the risks and prioritising the safety ofpassengers.

The Minister, further explained to Coresportgibthat the situation was a temporary measurewhich had been put in place after consultation

with the RAF, and after agreement that indeedthere had been a substantial increase in the useof the small pitches which provided the potentialfor a risk of balls falling onto the runway.Although junior football was not considered asmuch of a risk, a decision had been taken toremove all risks whilst a solution was sought toremedy the problem.

According to the Minister, who was at theVictoria Stadium on Saturday a solution hadalready been found, costed and awaitingdelivery. With consultation with the MOD/RAF, asafety net was to be put in place above theground which would prevent balls from goingover the fence. A half pitch netting, securely

fitted to the specifications required to ensure thesafety of users and aircraft would be installedwithin the coming weeks. This would allow forthe pitches to be used again as normal.

The Minister also pointed out that whilst spacewas still at a premium in Gibraltar, there was agrowing need for more facilities and that hisministry was actively seeking to increase thenumber of facilities available. The use of theCepsa Petrol station, once the east side road iscomplete is seen as a further solution todecrease the use of the smaller pitches andreturn them to their original purpose as trainingpitches if necessary.

Rowing

The 5000m SacarelloChallenge Cup TeamEndurance reggattatook place withinAdmiralty port waters

early on Saturday morning. Eightcrews competed in a coursewhich saw the teams race fromNorth Mole to Gibdocks, turningand heading back to the startingpoint.

The first crew in was CRC J18crew with over eight lengths tospare between them and secondplaced crews. The second, third

and fourth place closelycontested as the crews reachedthe final stretch, this being ateam event the positioningcounted in order to calculate theoverall team results.

The efforts of each individualcrew could, however, not gowithout merit. In what was a longcourse for some of the crews, thethird placed positioning of thefemale med rowing club, whomaintained their advantage evenwhen Calpe's female crew runout of steam, and whilst opposed

by a men's crew highlighted thehigh calibre still in existence inGibraltar's rowing fraternity.

Small pockets of spectatorscould be seen across the bay, bthe rocks at Westview and Nortmole. However, the race whichwas an exciting spectator evenwas hardly known to the publicand could surely have seen ahigher number of spectatorsappreciating the efforts put bythese rowers all year round tocompete at this level.

Rugby

Gibraltar Rugby Select XV provided ample proofthat rugby in Gibraltar has a good future aheadwith a convincing win over visiting Jersey RugbyAssociation Select XV.

Victoria Stadium saw itself turned from what isnormally a football stadium on a Saturday to acelebration of Rugby this Saturday. As from 12youth teams practised in exhibition matcheswhich allowed the young players to get a tasteof playing at Victoria Stadium. As two o'clockapproached the stadium received a new boostof energy as both visiting fans and local rugbyfans gathered to partly fill up the main stand, inwhat was a good turnout considering the shortnotice in announcing the event.

The match started with Gibraltar Rugby impos-ing their authority over jersey from the verystart. Within minutes Loddo had run the ballover the line for the first try, which was easilyconverted for the first seven points.

A lack of concentration having gone 7-0 up soquickly saw Jersey take advantage with a deerrun to the line catching Gibraltar out of positionto bring the match back to a level score line.

This was the last of Jersey's scoring chances asGibraltar upped its game with fierce tackling, some of which saw the crowd stand and ap-plause.

There was little to dispute Gibraltar's dominanceover the match as they started to accumulatetries leaving Jersey well behind in the score line. The visiting Jersey side did not capitulate with

ease and kept on looking for a breakonly to be met by resounding defensivedisplays and fast reactions that did notallow them the space to run at the ball.A well disciplined Gibraltar side main-tained the pressure throughout lookingto increase their tally to the delight ofthe crowd.A 51-7 score line highlighting the depthin strength of the Gibraltar Rugby SelectXV who ensured that they proved theirworth in front of their home crowd.

The afternoon of rugby was not over asthe veterans took to the field for theclosing match.

With most of the main crowd now gone, the match was far quieter affair betweentwo sides who were competitive in na-ture but far more relaxed over the over-all score line which went in favour ofJersey 17-5.

Following the match Coresportgibcaught up with Minister Steven Linareswho had been present during thematch. The minister highlighted that theproposed rugby pitches at Europa Pointwere to become a reality with talks overtheir use already well underway.

AthleticsThe penultimate race of the road racing season

saw some new, although many would say old, faces turnup for what was the shortest of all the road racing dis-tances. The 4km race would take athletes from BaysideRoad through Winston Churchill into Line Wall and downto Ragged Staff before returning to Bayside Road for thefinish.

The likes of Liam Byrnes and Joe Celecia added theirnames to the long list of runners, many short distancerunners taking on a bigger challenge than they normallywould, other taking on a much shorter course than theyare normally accustomed to and raring for the challengeto see how different running a shorter race was like.

With no Richard Blagg to challenge for a place at thetop, due to an Achilles injury Arnold Rogers had an easyride in this weekend's 4km flat race.

The race, which was run partly in the rain on Sundaysaw a somewhat different group of athletes join

First through the line was Arnold Rogers who had buildquite a gap between himself and second placed Abdul-lah Ahammad, who was himself the first youth past theline.

Although the turn out for the races was high the seasonstimes have been viewed as considerably lower thanother seasons, many attributing it to a lack of top runnerschallenging for top position. Arnold once again saw him-self having to beat his own pace with no other competitorreally challenging him for first place.

Former road racing champion Liam Byrne, who beforethe race had himself stated that his legs were not whatthey were before came in third. He was to prove himselfwrong coming in third with a sprint finish to the line. The first female past the finishing line was Karyn Bar-nett, with Alison Edwards another of the athletes notcompeting on the day.

The next race in the athletics calendar is the Round theRock on the 6th March.

Futsal

As Coresportgib reported last week bothLincoln Red Imps and Lions FC Futsalteams have been thrown out of the FirstDivision following their non-appearancesat games in recent weeks.

The league took the decision last week, telling clubs at the end of the week andinforming all clubs affected by thechanges on how this would affectresults.

A Futsal league official explained that onFriday all clubs in the first division havebeen spoken to with the end result beingthat points and results already completedin matches against Lincoln and Lions willstand as they are. All future fixtures will,

however, see the three points given tothe rivals, with a 3-0 score lineadjuticated.

The demise of both Lincoln and Lionshas come as no surprise to some in thefutsal league who have indicated thatwith many players playing both elevenaside and futsal, and having loyalty totwo clubs these was expected aspressure increased on players to decidewhich was their priority. Lincoln areamong one of the teams in which playersdropped out as they went to other clubs, and some were forced to decide to eithertake up futsal or eleven aside.

The resulting changes saw a mixed

package of fixtures which wereconfusing to see. Teams were listed asplaying twice on the same day at thesame time even in some cases, with onlyone match played. This inevitablescenario is likely to continue as matchesare rescheduled to make the best out ofthe allocations in place for leaguematches.

The first match of the weekend sawManchester 62 play against Championhopefuls Lynx. The latter took control ofthe match from the very first instance, opening a substantial lead within the firstfew minutes of play.

Manchester 62 had among its players

former 11 aside coach Ochello in whatwas a surprising line-up for thestruggling outfit. Ochello had prior to thisweek coached from the bench. On thisoccasion he actually took on the role as aplayer. The Manchester team which hadmany "old heads" playing has already ledto some eyebrows lifted as theManchester 62 are seen as the next teamthat could possibly end up with similarproblems as Lions and Lincoln. Alreadystruggling at the foot of the table the 18-0scoreline is seen as a demoralising resultwhich could lead to players dropping outin the coming weeks.

the table saw Lynx win by an 18-0 goalmargin.

Lynx were not the only ones to put 18past their opponents, with GibraltarScorpions, buoyed by the expulsionof Lincoln also putting 18 pastCannons, who are also struggling atthe foot of the table.

It was the Gibraltar Pheonix versusGlacis match that brought about thebiggest surprise. Glacis who lastweek did not field a team, wereheavily defeated by Pheonix by 6-2,opening a gap at the top for StJoseph's who beat College 1975 4-2and Lynx, both riding high in thetable.

The chilly cold evening of Friday saw the Saintsface Glacis in a clash both teams were deter-mined to get the three points. Glacis, whoseseason started with defeat after defeat, freshfaces now seeing a resurgence of the old Glacisfeel, was a team with a new determination proofof which was their early warm up.

The talk amongst the team, which could be eas-ily heard through the empty stands was "vamopa gana" (let's go to win). After their defeat atthe hands of Gibraltar United this was a matchthey needed to grab by the scruff of the neckfrom the start.

This was not to happen after a tentative coupleminutes Saints first attack ended with a goalfrom Lopez as the ball rebounded back to hisfeet to slot it back in.

Within seconds an outstretched leg from Lopezagain was not enough to push the ball pastGlacis keeper for the second. The ball going fora corner instead. Enrique soon made amendsas he met the corner kick pass by the near postand flicked the ball into the back of the net withhis back to goal.

Two nil down, Glacis were not to be out doneyet. Sastrie, who was becoming a menace fromearly only putting the ball wide as a he cut apass back to the keeper.

Glacis tried to regain control of the game play-ing on Saints mistakes. Sastrie once again tookadvantage of a mistake in the pass back cuttingto the left and driving it home as Perez cameout to meet him. Calls for offside were ignoredto the frustration of Saints defenders.

Just four mins later a free kick from inside StJoseph's half saw the ball go straight throughthe Glacis defence leaving Morlan alone at theedge of the box. Driving the ball low to the in-side of the post Glacis Keeper, Tover, was un-able to meet it putting St Joseph's three up.Glacis were not to give up hope, and main-

tained their game pressingand countering st Joseph'sto close the gap. With 32minutes gone, a freekicklobbed into the area wasmissed by the saints de-fence leaving the ball tobe cut across goal forLopez to push in, onceagain with calls for offside.

After several more breaksby Glacis Saints keeperPerez was clearly an-noyed with his defence forlosing the ball close to thearea. In turn his owncoach got angry withPerez for ignoring his callsfor goal kicks to be takenby someone else. Saintslost their cool momentarilyas they argued amongthemselves.

Glacis pressed hard andhad their chances butcould not finalise them.

Instead it was St Joseph'swho capitalised on mis-takes as once again theGlacis keeper was beatenfrom a shot from outsidethe area, once again fromMorlan who seemed tohave found his target well.

Glacis coach kept histeam going shouting fromthe sidelines that theywere not giving up orthrowing in the towel asthe half time whistle blew.

As the second half startedit was St Joseph's whocame out the strongestwith Gomes Torres brokethrough the defence and

blasted from the edge ofthe box for the 5-2.

With Glacis coach stillsinging the same hymn of"Don't give up" Glacis keptthe momentum chasingafter balls and running atSt Joseph's as they triedto shorten the gap. Lopezwas unfortunate to have agoal disallowed for offsidewith Sastrie denied twoclear chances throughsaves from Perez.

Sastrie, nevertheless, hithis target with 8 minutesto go for full time.

As the tensions grew, andwith St Joseph's seeingthat their tactics to slowthe pace were not workingthe match became a hotpot of frustrations, withsome tough tackling andconfrontations. It was inone of this that Lopez, who had been growingmore frustrated not justwith the tackles, but withhis own teammates pass-ing reacted angrily to aSaint's tackle and facedoff with a defender, receiv-ing an immediate red fromthe official.

With only ten men on thefield Glacis were unable toreach St Joseph's penaltyarea, defeated on the finalwhistle, but demonstratingthat the new faces in theteam are likely to causesome upsets in the com-ing weeks as they battlefor points to stay up.

CoreSportgibThe Gibraltar United versusAngels match had more than itsshare of drama and intrigue.

Angels who have beenstruggling all season came outwith what can only be describedas a totally new outfit, and withthe rumour mill workingovertime as the expected"Brazilian investors" had as yetnot officially materialises.

Just before the matchCoresportgib caught up withAngels President EdmundHosken, when asked tocomment on the changes ofplayers and rumours ofinvestors Edmunds said, " Yes Ihave eleven new players allfriends who are helping me out.

They saw I was having a badtime and they have come tohelp me out," as he denied thatthere were any investors whohad brought in new players intothe team. Asked on theinvestors Edmonds said "In thefuture there might be an investorbut not yet we have to wait andsee." His comments came justhours after reports emerged ofseveral people expected to bepart of the Angels team wouldnot be allowed to be pitch sideas essential paperwork requiredby the GFA had not arrived, andwere therefore not considered apart of the coaching team, orplayers.

This was quickly confirmedwhen during the match when agroup were seen leaving the

pitch side and head to the standfrom where they were giving outinstructions on how Angelsshould play, what changes tomake and what the playingformation should be.

Angels own line -up saw a totalof 13 changes from the teamthat first played at the start ofthe season. Only four playerssurvived from the start of theseason, Villada Morente (c),Larouia, Bernal and Arroyal in aline-up which included sevensubstitutes, this from a teamthat had difficulty before theclose of the year in findingsubstitutes to be on the bench.

The unknown quantity, asAngels presented themselvesas, was to be a mixed surprisefor Gibraltar United, who cameinto the match on the back of awin against Glacis United.

The newly refreshed Angelsdemonstrated themselves to bea fast disciplined line-up. BandaDaniel and Fernandez provingto be very effective centraldefenders whose command ofthe area allowed for Lopez topush up through the flanks.Within the first few minutesGibraltar United felt the newstrength of Angels at theirdoorstep with three attempts atgoal going narrowly wide.Angels presented themselvesas a well disciplined, wellorganised outfit, with playerssupporting each other, forwardattacking play strategies andvery much a team that did not

consider themselves as adefensive playing outfit.

Although unsettled by the newlook Angels, Gibraltar United didhave their early chances only tosee new keeper Filoho pushingthe ball to safety.

The first goal came in the 31stminute when Rodriguez chippedover a defender to cut acrosshim, and in the same stridelaunched a devastating halfvolley for the first.

With Angels improved across allzones of the field the matchbecame a competitively edgedgame which saw both teamshave their chances to increasethe goal tally. Angels, however, had more of the ball, with a freeflowing midfield play, and somedangerously accurate throughballs tearing through Gibraltar'sdefence.

It was not until the 75th minutethat Angels struck again, onceagain through Rodriguez whosaw the ball land after a flickfrom a miss header beat boththe Gibraltar United keeper andhis defender Carl leaving himfree to push the ball into theback of the net.

Gibraltar United did not give in,and continued to stride forwardtrying to find a way through togoal. Montovio who had beenthreatening to score met a deepcross into the area from Carlwith an overhead kick whichsaw the ball go over the

defence and keeper for Greento dive header over the line.

With the score at 2-1 and justa few minutes to go GibraltarUnited had several chances toequalise only to see the ballhit wide off the mark.

Angels who had come into thematch without a win sincebeating Glacis at the end ofNovember recorded theirsecond victory closing the gapwith Glacis to four points. Theinitial signs now are thatAngels new outfit could causesome upsets in what isalready a league with arunaway leader.

The future of Angels is still aquestion of intrigue with thepresence of what seemed likea full coaching team, and whatseemed like players, in thestands further adding to theintrigue as Angels seemed tobe controlled by those on thestand rather than those on thebench.

The GFA is already expectedto be looking into the affairs ofAngels as the massivechanges within the club haveraised concern. A fifteen manchange in personnel in midseason has raised seriousconcerns across the footballarena. None of the playersoriginating from Gibraltar.

Just a week after being narrowly defeated byLions in the cup, Europa came into the matchknowing that they still had not won a game thisleague season.

Under the guidance of Adrian Holmes Europaare seen as one of the most improved teams inthe women's league. At the start of the seasonthe team showed some raw talent, but were stillvery much an undisciplined side finding theirway around the pitch leading to some veryheavy defeats.

Europa, however, who had still to win a leaguematch this season were the underdogs from thevery start. However, Lions had a depleted subsbench, with just to players on the bench tocount on, something which they wouldeventually find was not enough as their luckseemed to have steered off course.

The match started much as expected with Lionstaking control of the ball and pushing Europaback. Attempts through the flanks, deep ballsin, through crosses were all met with the sameresolute determination to clear their lines anddefend their penalty area. Europa maintainedtheir composure as the pressure mountingadding to the frustrations of the Lioness whocould not get through for a clear chance.

As time wore on Europa's solid defending sawthem grow in confidence and themselves pushLions back into their area.

Lions were the dominant side, with the greatercontrol of possession, and the more chances.Their finishing, however, failed to have thatedge which would have put them ahead.

With the game at nil nil, Europa started thesecond half with a surprise of their own. Anearly corner was driven low into the middle ofthe area catching the Lions defence napping. The ball struck in by Revagliatte for the 1-0.

Lions pressed forward butwere unable to find the netfor a long time. A scramble infront of goal which shouldhave seen Europaconceding ending with aclearance in the end.Lions however came backinto the game scoring twoconsecutive times to bringthe game back to levelterms.

The luckless Lions saw twoof their players injured, leaving them with noalternatives on the bench. With Lions restructuring, andlosing Espinosa at the backa loose ball saw Europastrike for goal again, anoutstretched Lions keeperunable to reach the ball as ittrickled inside the post forthe third.

answerA FOOTBALLER

Q - When did you start lik-ing football?

At a very young age, Iused to watch it at homeall the time. The week-ends at my dads used tobe back to back football. Iused to play at schooland in the fields with mybrothers and the otherkids from the area.

Q - I understand you havethree brothers, one of whichplays for Europa FC U17,what's been their reactionto you playing football?

Two don't really interestthemselves in football, one likes to watch andplay occasionally but justcasual. The one whoplays for Europa FC is in-terested in my matchesand how I'm getting on asI am with wanting to knowabout his football.

Q - Who have you playedfor and what's been yourexperience so far?

I only joined teams once Iwas here in Gibraltar.

There weren't many girlswho played football in theUK. Although once atschool a World Cup com-petition was organizedand there was a girlsteam and boys team fromeach form group and theboys got knocked out inthe first round but myteam won the World Cup.We got medals and men-tioned in the school as-sembly. The whole schoolwere talking about us asa team and came to watchthe final. It was great.Once playing football inGib, I played for AngelsAlliance and then StJoseph's for a short pe-riod but due to work Icouldn't be committed.

Years later I started play-ing with Manchester andhave played with themever since playing forManchester has beengreat, we have won somuch and still have moreto win. We are not only agreat team but a greatfamily and we all share agreat bond and under-standing of the way we

Its sometimes still strangewhen you are listening tofootball talk and suddenlyyou realise that those speak-ing are actually women, andthey are talking about theirown experiences on the field, such is still the old machoways of football.

What is still even stranger isthat some people do not evenrealise that there is awomen's league in Gibraltar, and that there are womenfootballers in Gibraltar.

They do not get the exposurethey should, they do not getthe support they should.Women's football is still rele-gated to the smaller pitches. It is still a thing which mightjust get a rare mention.

So we decided to ask some"girl" to speak to us abouttheir football for once.

The conclusion, I won't bespeaking to her that often, aManchester player support-ing Liverpool, only Liverpoolfans can get away doing that.

play. I'm glad to be a part ofit

Q - When you first returned togib from uk how hard was it toplay football in Gibraltar?

I just used to play in theparks at first but then weused to play as part of PEand that's when peoplestarted noticing me and myfriend asked if I wanted tojoin her team...Angels Al-liance. And that's how it allstarted.

Q - You were lucky to see gibenter UEFA and for women'sfootball to take off at the sametime, do you think that withoutUEFA you wouldn't have beenplaying?

No because if it hadn't havehappened when it did thefact that so many peoplewere committed to making ithappen it would have hap-pened eventually.

Q-The old ways of thinking isthat girls playing football youare just not girls. What do yousay to ppl who think like this?

well it think the idea in thisday and age is ludicrous andI think more people are actu-ally coming to terms with theidea of girls playing football.Us girls are allowed to playand we should receive thesame privileges and samemedia coverage that themen's matches get

Q - when you are not playinghow different are you fromother girls?

I'm practically the same, Ilove shopping and make upand everything girly. Justbecause I play football does-n't mean I can't be girly.

Q - Now Gibraltar has its ownleague where do you person-ally hope to go from here?

I hope we can play moretournaments with differentcities or countries and makewomen's football progressfor the younger players

Q- There are young playerswho wish to become pros oneday do you think Gibraltar of-fers them enough of a chanceto do so on the future?

Unfortunately not. Hopefullyone day it will but the youngones who are good nowneed to go off and developtheir skills and they have theability to do so they shouldtake it.

And lastly surprise us who doyou really support?Liverpool

In what was a wet chillySunday morning fewventured to attend thebadly advertisedWomen's hockey cupfinal between Hawks andEagles, the two teams

representing Gibraltar hockey inthe forthcoming EuropeanHockey Challenge tournament tobe held in Gibraltar.

Both teams started slow with astring of failed passes andmissed controls seen during thefirst few minutes of the match asboth acquainted themselves tothe environment.

It was Hawks who seemed towarm up quicker to the match, giving it more urgency as theminutes progressed. Hawkspushed the Eagles team backinto their own half. The initialpressure paid off when Hawksbroke through when a ball was hitinto the D, and on a one on onethe ball was stroked past thekeeper for the 1-0.

The goal spurred Eagles intoaction pressing higher on thefield. It was, however, Hawks whoonce again found themselveswith a chance as they countered, finding themselves three againstthree, only to see the ball blockedby the Eagles keeper.

Eagles more aggressive intheir play than at the start ofthe match then had theirown chance when the ballwas hit hard into the middleto leave number 15 alone. Her hit saved by the keeperfor a short corner which sawthe keeper come back intoplay again to block the ball.

Eagles pushed up but withHawks marking player toplayer they found it hard topenetrate deep into Hawks

half. Eagles kept two upfront who where shadowedwell. Keeping a back four intheir half. Hawks wereplaying with two defendersfirmly in the back using moreresources up front thanEagles. Using their midfieldplayers to move in and out insupport and bringing backtheir two flankers whenrequired.

Good defensive control playby Hawks also kept Eagles

out of reaching the D.

As the match progressedEagles higher pressure wasnot allowing Hawks manyoptions upfront.

When they did get into theD, Hawks were a clear threatwhich seemed to forceEagles to hold back theirtight line of four at the back. The first half finished 1-0with very little between bothteams separating them.

Hawks started playing thesecond half with a morecontrolled passing gamepressing further forwardmore and pinning Eaglesback for long periods of thegame. With Eagles notchanging their formation thisleft them with difficultiesgoing forward, making itharder for them to find spaceto break through Hawkstightly knitted midfield, whichwas acting as the first line ofdefence.

Hawks more intensepressing soon won them ashort corner which afterseveral attempts to find away to goal saw the ballstruck into the back of net forthe two nil.

As the match was reachingits finale the tension couldbe seen as both teamsstarted seeing morevociferous calls to theumpire, and more playersgetting sin binned. Hawks, who had a string of players

send off left the doors openfor Eagles to attack. MovingTorilla further forward andreducing their numbers atthe back Eagles found a waythrough to reduce the deficit.

With an increased urgencyEagles threatened toequalise as Hawks werepinned back. They had, nevertheless left it to late.

Hawks coming out eventualwinners in this the first cupfinal of 2016.

All in all, just adding thefigures up our readership oflast weeks pages would bewell over 6,000. short newsActively searchingfor new spaceThe Sports ministry isreported to have beenactively seeking new spacesacross Gibraltar which wouldincrease the number ofsporting and leisure facilitiesavailable in Gibraltar. Withthe Bayside Sports Complexseeing an increased used inrecent years, including amore than doubling in its useas events host venues forevents such as theinternational dog show andmusic concerts, the Ministryhas been looking at everyconceivable option availableto them to increase sportsand leisure facility spaces inGibraltar.

Among the latest areas tohave been looked at areabandoned and unusedfacilities within the rock suchas old military tunnels.

Although no decisions haveas yet been taken, theextensive number of tunnels, rooms and installationswithin the rock, constructedduring the cold war meansthat there are numerousoptions available which havepreviously not been lookedinto in the past.

With Gibraltar having entered theprofessional football world a close watch isbeing maintained on the betting industrytrends after concerns that Gibraltar is still ayoung football market which is open to thevulnerabilities from global organisedsyndicates and even at a lower scaleabuses for financial gain using the bettingindustry, especially online betting originatingoutside the main regulated Europeanmarkets by punters trying to make a quickbuck.

Recent trends have already raisedconcerns, including CoreSportGibunderstands, an investigation into someirregularities which have been raisedinvolving local league players alleged tohave placed bets online with respect toGibraltar football matches.

Strict regulations govern the placement ofbets by players registered with the Gibraltarleagues, which does not allow any player tomake bets on matches, even if they are notplaying in the same match.

The concerns are not only focused on 11aside football, but also include all otherfootball leagues and sports where bets arebeing taken for Gibraltar matches of anysort.

Concerns have also been raised over thepotential of abuses in relation to growingtrends which has seen some betting firmskeeping tabs on things such as fouls, yellowcards, or other minor incidents during thegames which punters can bet on.

The concerns follow trends which have been

reported on across other European footballleagues which have been targeted byforeign betting companies, some from Asiaand East European states, whereregulations are less stringent, and which areeasily accessible online, and in whichabuses have been recorded in areas suchas players receiving yellow cards or foulsgiven during a match. Areas which somebetting companies are increasingly allowingpunters to bet on.

The authorities, including the bettingindustry, are said to be keeping a watchfuleye over this betting trends directly relatedto Gibraltar football matches to ensure thatany irregularities are investigated to ensurethat Gibraltar is kept secure from suchactivity. As one expert told CoreSportGib,"unless it is stopped from the very firstinstance you could have an avalanche and itwould be very hard to get rid of such activity,Gibraltar has to watch out for such potentialrisks as other small football leagues havefallen foul to it and we do not want that tohappen in Gibraltar."
