CORNELIUS HOUSE
CORNELIUS HOUSE was established in 1981 to provide care and support for people over 65 who have reached a stage in their lives where they no longer enjoy living on their own. Though physically capable, and mentally alert, they now find day to day chores like the shopping, cooking, cleaning and household maintenance increasingly difficult and may need help in washing and dressing etc.
So, on admission to Cornelius House they are usually able to carry on living their own lives, as they would have done in their own homes, but with 24 hour support in a safe, homely and noninstitutional environment.
To help prospective residents and their families evaluate Cornelius House this document sets out the aims, objectives, philosophy of care, and details the services, facilities and conditions available.
From 1st August, 2007 the Home entered into a contractual arrangement with West Sussex Social Services. This enables the home to accommodate partially funded residents.

Accommodation has been designed to allow people to continue living in relative independence within a small safe community. Every effort is made to meet individual needs and preferences, with residents' privacy, dignity and personal autonomy respected.
Cornelius House has twenty single rooms. Fourteen of these rooms are on the ground floor, most with doors to the garden. The remaining six rooms are serviced by a passenger lift and comprise four rooms on the first floor, and another two rooms on the second floor.
All rooms are decorated in fresh, light colours and meticulously maintained. Fully furnished, each one has an ensuite bathroom or shower room, along with colour television, call bell system, telephone point, door locks and a lockable storage facility for private correspondence etc.
The rooms look and feel spacious and there is the for residents to bring small pieces of their own furniture, ornaments or pictures if they would like to.
The Home has a lounge and a lounge/dining area that looks out over a large patio and south facing garden, open and accessible in the warmer months.

Social Life at Cornelius House happens naturally, and is a matter of individual choice. People are encouraged to lead their daily lives to suit their own needs, as far as is reasonably possible.
By and large, residents have the freedom to come and go from the Home to socialise and maintain their cultural interests, and to eat out, or arrange late meals when they return. Their visitors are always welcome into the Home at any time, and residents are able to offer them tea/coffee during their stay, as they would do their own homes.
The Home does organise weekly entertainment, including keep fit, reminiscence, wine mornings and quizzes. There are other various events throughout the year including a Christmas party and annual Garden party where family and friends are also welcome.
West Sussex County Library Service maintains a wellstocked library in the Home, including large print books, and individual requests for books can be catered for.

Internet Access and email capacity is available in all bedrooms and the day room.
Contact with family and friends is important to residents, and every effort is made to facilitate this. At other times, there is a telephone available in the home, and telephone points can be installed in the resident's room.
The religious needs of residents are met through regular services held at Cornelius House. Holy Communion is held on a Wednesday afternoon twice a month, and those unable to attend may receive Communion in their own rooms.

Privacy and dignity are paramount at Cornelius House. Every resident is treated with respect and their right to privacy is upheld. They are afforded privacy when for example they are in consultation with a visiting health advisor, legal representative, or when their family or visitors come to visit.
Staff are not permitted to open a resident's door before knocking, and will only enter a room when they have been invited to do so by the occupant. In keeping with the Home's written policies on this subject residents are always addressed by their correct title, unless they specifically request to be addressed in a different way.
The qualifications and experience of the management and staff are what makes Cornelius House a safe, welcoming care home. Care staff employed in the Home are selected for their genuine empathy with the elderly. They receive training in all aspects of care, health and safety and emergency procedures. Up to thirty staff are normally employed, many of whom have served in the Home for over 10 years.

When it comes to safety, the care home has an impeccable record, due in part to ensuring Safety Fire Precautions and Associated Emergency Procedures are thoroughly understood and implemented. To this end every member of staff receives regular training and exercises in fire drill and emergency procedures to ensure that the health and safety of residents, staff and visitors are maintained.
Accordingly, neither residents, staff nor visitors are allowed to smoke anywhere in the Home. The residents’ views on how the home operates are important, so the Proprietor and Care Home Manager are always available to listen to residents talk through their problems, and take on board any comments and suggestions on how the Home is managed, and, when practical, to take the necessary steps to make improvements in their daily living or care arrangements.

Complaints need to be aired and a procedure must be in place to allow residents, and their relatives and visitors to register their issues and make suggestions regarding the care and services provided.
To that end, a complaints procedure is clearly displayed in the Home for general guidance, and residents will also receive a copy of the Complaints Procedure on admission to the home.
This procedure will give residents clear and simple information as to how these suggestions or complaints should be referred to in the first instance and subsequently if a complaint is not resolved to their entire satisfaction.
The proprietors and staff are always available to listen and help ensure that any matter brought up is immediately dealt with. An annual questionnaire is circulated annually by an independent auditor, to provide information as to how we can improve our services.
Cornelius House is registered with the Care Quality Commission (South East). The Commission's address is:
C Q C South East Citygate, Gallowgate, Newcastle upon Tyne. NE 1 4PA Telephone: 03000 616161 Email: [email protected]
Admissions Those interested in coming to stay at Cornelius House are required to be fully assessed prior to admission. This is to ensure that the Home will be able cater for the resident's expected needs fully and safely.
For this reason, residents or families seeking emergency admissions or respite care can therefore only be admitted on condition of this pre assessment process. Cornelius House does not provide a rehabilitation role in the community where expert care and rehabilitation aids are essential for care management.
Review of Care. On admission to Cornelius House the resident's pre assessment documents will be incorporated into a long term Care Plan in which the established needs will be recorded, following consultations between the Proprietors/Senior Care Staff and the resident. The Care Plan will then be reviewed as required, to meet the residents changing needs/expectations. The Care Plan is available at any time for the resident to access.
