Coaching Director’s foreword

“The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure."

Sven Goran Eriksson Welcome to the HPW Cornella coaching program, and thank you for investing the time into becoming a better coach for the HPW kids. This guide is intended to demonstrate UE Cor-nella’s basic training philosophy. The Cornella philosophy is simple - teach kids to play in a fun but disciplined way; teach them to exe-cute the basics well; develop their playing intelligence as well as football skills and build a coaching platform in the club that ensure the players get consistently exposed to this philosophy as they progress through teams and age-groups. This program is unique in Australia, as it com-bines training and mentoring through the sea-son. Be patient with the process - you are not expected to be an expert in a few weeks. The learning is intense in the pre-season training, but you will find the real learning happens as you progress through the season. I am very excited as we head into our second season working with the Cornella program. We are developing a football philosophy for our club, and building a leg-acy that will serve the club for many years to come. Thank you and good luck.

Dermot Crowley (Coaching Director, Hurlstone Park Wanderers FC)

1.1.2. Repetition is key

1.1.3. Simple training 1.2. Club Philosophy

2. The Coaches’ role within the club and in the team. The role & responsibilities of a coach extends further than just the sports aspect, the behavioural aspect of a coach is very important to set an example for the players

3. Rules and discipline. Without discipline & respect, training will be ineffective

3.1. Rules during training sessions 3.1.1. Arrive 10mins prior to start of training & in correct apparel

3.1.2. Respect 3.2. Rules during matches 3.2.1. Arrive 1hr prior to kick-off & in correct apparel

3.3. Disciplinary action. Examples such as sitting out 5mins of training ses-sion, not playing the weekend match, to expulsion of player/parents from the club

4. Basic Training Structure. 4.1. Training is set based on age group and level 4.1.1. Adapt to each age & level without losing the football philosophy

Day 2: Speed - Using automatic movements & match with objectives 4.3.3. Day 3: Dead Ball - Corner kicks, Free kicks, Throw-ins, Penalties

IMPORTANT: The coach must plan each training ses-sion prior using the training planner sheet provided instead of improvising. Retain the planner sheets as it will be a guide during the season. Always work with ball.

5. Basic Technical Concepts. 5.1. Shooting, passing and controlling the ball

6. Basic Tactical Concepts 6.1. Offensive concept - Un-mark, help, tempo, transitions 6.2. Defensive concept - Cover, permute (exchange position), help, tempo, watching, pressing, balance, transition

SESSION 2 TACTICAL SYSTEMS

1hr theory / 1hr 40mins practical - First static, finish dynamic

1. 4-3-3 system explained. 1.1. Movements

1.2. Positive & Negatives in using this system The most commonly used system over the past years and is the FFA system taught via its National Curricu-lum. The evolution of football caters to this system to maximise the use of the entire field in a rational way.

2. 4-2-3-1 system explained. This was a popular system during the 90’s and very easy to implement with kids. Different variants can be adapted and is a really offensive system.

3. 4-4-2 system explained. This system is not used as much in the current game. Creates unbalance in the midfield if you’re a team that plays on the floor. This is an ideal system if you play long balls.

4. How to work with systems during the season. Focus on defence-attack and automatic movements. Incorporate with possession games and matches with objectives.

5. Adaptation to 7v7 & 9v9. 5.1. 2-3-1 system for 7v7 (same as 4-3-3)

5.2. 3-4-1 system for 9v9 IMPORTANT: During preseason is really important to work on tactic systems, the players must understand the Basics of our system. Usually coaches just focus on physical training but it is even more important to work on tactic training during the preseason. Re-member that your team is going to work together as a machine, if a piece in the machine is not working, the whole machine will not work. Let the ball run not the player.

SESSION 3 TECHNICAL / TACTICAL CONCEPTS -

POSSESSION GAMES 2hrs 30mins practical

1. Explanation of different types of Rondo and the essence of them Rondo is a Spanish word which means round. This simple exercise involves all the essence of quick foot-ball. Limiting touches and working with different spaces we can improve our players technically but also make them think faster. In the beginning this will not be fun for the kids because they are not use to this exercise, as soon as they control and master the Rondo they will have so much fun.

2. Explanation of different types of possession and why it’s used As the name implies, the aim is to possess the ball. Keep the ball for your team, we won’t concede goals and players will be focused on passing. We can work in many different tactic concepts depending on the of kind of PM we use.

3. Explanation the application of possession Drills need to be adapted to what the teams need improvement on. During the course of the season the areas which require the most attention should be worked on Do not be a dictator towards your players; they must be convinced in a way that they understand what is being explained and that it makes sense

SESSION 4 TECHNICAL / TACTICAL MOVEMENTS

- DEFENSIVE WORK 30mins theory / 2hrs practical

1. Explanation of different types of defence and when each should be used

1.1. Defence with 4 players in a line, with sweeper or a mix

1.2. Cover and mark The entire team must defend as a unit. The balance between defence-attack (5-5) is very important.

2. Explanation of different types of exercises used to improve a team defensively Mainly defence-attack and matches with objectives but also possession games

3. Key aspects It is important to know that you cannot always play the ball on the floor, sometimes the ball must be cleared, reset and restart - Tactical fouls

- Tempo

SESSION 5 BASIC AUTOMATIC MOVEMENTS

OFFENSIVE WORK (Attack Evolution or Organised Attack)

45mins theory / 2hrs practical

1. Types of attacking The attack situation depends on your team, the op-ponent, the timing, the coach’s mentality, etc. Lots of factors influence the way a team will play

1.1. Elaborative attack Is the more complicated way to attack and needs lots of training and patience, not every team can play this kind of attack

1.2. Counter attack Is the simplest way because with space its much eas-ier to make correct movements. It is the role of the coach to understand and apply every kind of attack in the different circumstances in a match and season

1.3. When to use each

2. Introduction to Automatic Movements Automatic Movement is a way to train movements that players do to attack during the match. Generally when first starting out these tactic movements are applied in a simple way, but can become much more complicated and involve the whole team. Starting with 3 players, drills can be used to intro-duce the whole team. It is easy to train, with repeti-tion being the key component. These drills are used to work on a team’s tactical way, but also to work on areas such as shooting, play through the wings, make decisions or move the ball in defence

3. Automatic Movements as a warm up 3.1. Inverted Y

3.2. 5 Point exercise

4. Simple Automatic Movements (with 3, 4 & 5 players)

SESSION 6 INTEGRATED WORK DEFENSE ATTACK

TRANSITIONS AND PRESSING 45mins theory / 2hrs practical

1. What is transition and pressing Transition and pressing are two concepts that are often used in football. Pressing is the action in which one team attempts to get the ball back, easy in small space and difficult in big spaces. The team must work like a chain, pressing without purpose will make the chain weak and easy to break. Pressing links with transition, which is the time that the players spend switching their mind from an attacking situation to a defensive situation or vice versa. If the team spends a long time doing the transition it will be easier for the opponent to find available space

2. Explanation of pressing and how to execute successfully

2.1. When, why & how to press in different zones of the field

2.2. Positives & negatives of pressing

3. Exercises to work on transition The exercises are formed from the basic training ex-ercises (possession games, defence-attack and matches with objectives). Adapt the exercise to the age, level and the intensity and difficulty

4. Exercises to work on pressing As with transition, the exercises are formed from the basic training exercises (possession games, defence-attack and matches with objectives). Adapt the exer-cise to the age, level and the intensity and difficulty 5. Integrated work defence-attack, introducing press-ing and transition, counter attack and possession Integrated defence-attack is a good drill to work on the team’s defensive and offensive system. It is really simple to apply and you can see during the drills the evolution of automatic movements and ball posses-sion. It is also used to work on the tactic position of the defenders and attackers. There are many vari-ants that can be applied for different situations

SESSION 7 DEAD BALL

30mins theory / 2hrs practical

1. Importance of dead ball Matches are won or lost from a dead ball. Working 10 minutes each week on various plays will make the team’s more organized and potentially will have more chances to score goals and less in conceding. Areas in which teams can take advantage of these important situations during a Football match are:

2. Defensive dead ball 2.1. Corner & lateral free kicks 2.1.1. Position at posts

2.1.2. Rebounds

2.1.3. Zone or man-to-man marking 2.2. Frontal free kicks 2.2.1. Wall

2.2.2. Throw-ins, kick-off, goal kick

3. Offensive dead ball 3.1. Corners

3.2. Frontal free kick

3.3. Lateral free kick

3.4. Throw-ins, kick-off, goal kick, free kick from midfield

SESSION 8 GOAL KEEPER TRAININIG

30mins theory 2hrs practical

1. Introduction to goalkeepers The goalkeeper is commonly the forgotten position, yet it is important to appreciate the weight of this player in the team. The goalkeeper is the last man so can be utilised as a sweeper, seeing everything from a good perspective so their role as an organizer is really important. The goalkeeper is an extra player to use on the field, its better to pass the ball to the goalkeeper than kick the ball without sense. Goal-keepers have specific training and specific position-ing.

2. Basic keeper actions 2.1. Catch

2.2. Deflection

2.3. Diving

2.4. Kicking

2.5. Keeper as a Sweeper

3. Keeper warm up training and match 4. Some exercises to train the goalkeeper Different drills to work on the technical, physical and tactical aspects of goalkeeping.

SESSION 9 MATCHES WITH OBJECTIVES

30mins theory / 2hrs practical

1. Importance of the matches The matches are the objective of all training with the aim to train different parts during the week to finally combine everything and translate this on match day. It is for this reason that matches are introduced dur-ing training sessions. It is important to take advan-tage of training with matches to work on different parts of the game. 2. Technical objectives An example would be to have a short match to im-prove short pass, long pass, one on one, shooting. 3. Tactical objectives Matches to work on a particular system except in some attack and defensive movements. An example would be rewarding any automatic movement dur-ing a match.

SESSION 10 AUTOMATIC MOVEMENTS WITH THE

WHOLE TEAM 30mins theory and video / 2hr practical

The automatic movement of the whole team is the objective of our attack system. These will involve all the attacking movements that will be used, starting from the keeper and finishing with the striker. All these movements are the combinations of simple AM. In order to achieve this requires really good syn-chronization to do the movements and good “decision making” because during the match the player must choose the right option in different match situations.

SESSION 11 BASIC SEASON STRUCTURE OF TRAINING

2hrs theory

Training and objectives is dependent on the age group of each team. This course does not show a complicated way to or-ganize a season. It is really important to control what the team does, did and will do. The focus is also not on physical training but on the philosophy of football that is to be played. Age Groups:

5-7: Introduction to football, not focused, light training. Rondo as the base

8-12: Better physical skills, more coordination, introduce tactical concepts

13-18: This age play because they want to. Full tac-tic training, push the intensity up

Depending on the players’ level and age, the inten-sity and types of drills will be different. Players at different stages in age are either more focused or less, so training must be adapted to cater for this.

SESSION 12 STRUCTURE OF PRESEASON

2hrs theory

1. What is preseason 1.1. Preparing the team tactically and physically for the season

2. Objective of preseason

- Players to be committed and give their best during training

- Team bonding whereby all players believe in and work for the team

- There are no individuals within a team, everyone is necessary in a team

3. What players need to learn in preseason

- The type of football the coach wants to adopt

- Tactical system, dead ball. The coach has a lot of influence over the players so there is a responsibility of what is said and done dur-ing training and matches. Also to convince the play-ers that all the training is to improve the way to play during the weekend match. 4. Importance of the preseason during season Working hard during the preseason will give better results for the season. The results will not be imme-diate and depends on how long is spent training in preseason. Physical training is important but the tac-tical training is much more important. The amount of time spent doing preseason will turn into a better team position, clear actions from the players, faster play, better understanding of the philosophy early in the season and improved physical condition at the latter end of the season.

5. Physical training

- All training is with ball

6. Tactical training In order to play football the team needs the ball to be involved in every exercise. It is a big mistake to have the mindset that preseason is only to get ready physically. Football is not athletics, so you need to work with your team on team aspects.
