For He knoweth our frame . . . Psalm 103:14 Taken from a short devotional by Billy Graham
It’s very significant that the first US astronauts, while being trained for their moon
flights, were required to give twenty answers to this question, “Who are you?”
I challenge you to take that same test yourself. Answer thoughtfully and honestly.
Now that you have made your list and run out of things to add, review what you have written and ask yourself if you have answered truly. Do you really know who you are? Scientists agree that our desperate search leads all humans to seek heroes and to imitate others, to “paste bits and pieces of other people onto ourselves.” We dress and present ourselves in such a way as to fit in with others with whom we identify as like-minded. We try to play golf in the style of Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods. We emulate famous celebrities, even copying their mannerisms and so on. Part of this process is natural, because, when you think

This is the month!
29th the date!
This article was written on 31 January.
Whether you’re a Remainer or a die-hard Brexiteer, one thing is
certain; this great country of ours will manage just fine whichever way
things go. The BBC, in a recent news item, reported that Spain
provides nearly all our fresh tomatoes and this will be put at risk if we
leave with no deal! Apparently they may take longer to get here and
cost us more!
Oh no, I hear you cry, whatever will we do without fresh tomatoes from
Spain? Well, perhaps, just maybe, there are other countries in the
world that will sell them to us and they could be even better and
cheaper than the Spanish ones. But if the worst comes to the worst,
until it’s all sorted out, we British are a hardy lot – we can manage very
well with tinned!

Bible Study
How is Bible Study different from coming to listen to
a message as part of a service? Well, it’s really mega
different! For a start in a Bible Study you can ask
questions just as they pop into your head and it’s
much more inter-active. You are able to discuss
things in a small group and listen to a range of ideas
and opinions. You get time to think about the topic in
question and how it relates to you. You get the
opportunity to stop and go back over something that’s not clear or doesn’t quite make
sense to you, there and then; something you can’t do in a worship service.
I can’t actually over-emphasise the importance of regular Bible Study. Ask yourself
these questions: Do I know enough about the basis of the Christian faith? Could I
explain what I believe and why? Have I unanswered questions about why God allows
suffering and inequality in the world? How can I be sure there is life everlasting? How
do other religions fit in to the picture and how is Christianity different? Is the Bible
still relevant? What does it say about my relationship to God and to other people?
What is forgiveness? Who is Jesus really? How will it all end?
The Bible is God’s revelation to us. It fulfils all our deepest needs and our thirst for
answers and knowledge about who we are and what we’re doing here. It tells us about
a God that is so utterly wonderful it will blow your mind. May I encourage you to read
it? May I challenge you to question it? May I invite you to come along and discuss it?
Pastor
There are currently two Bible Studies – one on Tuesday morning run by
Honor Corry and the other on Wednesday morning run by Pastor. You
would be welcome to join either. If you can’t make a day time study, please
speak to me.

What do we know?
Article by Dorothy Banfield
I had many things in common with my lovely late-dad. One thing we both shared was a great love of history. Even as a child at school history was my favourite subject and my early memories of family holidays in Wales are peppered with trips to historical castles, stately homes and ancient ruins. History, however, is a funny thing to tie down. I realised from an early age that there were many different viewpoints when looking at an event that took place in the past. For example, most of the reporting in a war-zone is skewed according to which side the reporter is working for and of course, his or her own personal perspective of the facts. Records of events are naturally biased depending on who wrote them and when they were written. Even first hand, eye-witness accounts can differ wildly – for example, if three witnesses see a car accident, the police know that there will be three different accounts of what happened, as well as the driver’s, the passenger’s and anyone else involved. So how do we know what is true and what isn’t? There was a question posed recently on a late night TV programme. You might have seen it. It asked whether Sir Winston Churchill was a villain or a hero. Most people know about Churchill through films made about his life and of course, old news reels. These films are often romanticised or were made for propaganda purposes and are, of course, not particularly accurate or impartial. How many of us have actually studied the man and his life? Very few is suspect. How many of us really know know know know about his character, or about his early years as a soldier and a mediocre politician? Do we know, for instance, that he is reported to have made several dubious and questionable decisions that resulted in military action being taken against ordinary British working people who, at the time, were doing nothing more than peacefully protesting over severe working conditions? Many were injured and some were killed. The common view of Churchill is that he was the right man to steer us through the dark years of the Second World War. Indeed, it is difficult to argue that Churchill did not possess extra-ordinary insight, determination and personal fortitude that helped drive this country toward victory during those horrific war years. He said of himself, ‘cometh the hour, cometh the man’. So, villain or hero? What do you think? As for me, I tend to lean toward hero. But, then again, maybe not! As I said, I have no real first-hand knowledge of him whatsoever. All I know of him is from other people’s accounts and I am already bias in my views because I wantwantwantwant him to be a hero. There are four accounts detailing of the life of Jesus in the Bible. Three were written by eye-witnesses and the fourth, by a person close to the events. All four accounts are very similar but they do have some variations. The styles in which they are written and the differing emphasis
9
placed on the facts make for interesting comparison. For me, I feel that the differences are quite reassuring and each account has a ring of truth and authenticity. If there were four identical accounts I think I’d be a lot more sceptical that they were actually real. In addition, much of what is reported in the gospels can be verified through other source materials. It is possible, for instance, to cross-reference dates, times and events in the life of Jesus with what has been written by historians at the time or shortly after the events. In fact, so many people, both now and down the ages, have tried to discredit the gospels and failed, that this gives me additional reassurance as to their historical validity. In other words, if they could have been disproved, it would have happened before now! There is also another source of reassurance regarding the truth of the gospels but it’s hard for me to describe as it relates to a close encounter with Jesus Himself. I had been brought up as a nominal Christian, going to Sunday school and learning about the events surrounding the life of Jesus in the New Testament. I knew about the miracles, the teachings, the virgin birth and the death and resurrection but to be honest, it was all meaningless to me. You see, it wasn’t personal in any way. Then, back in 1984 I began to read and study the scriptures for myself for the first time. The stories were no longer just stories; they came alive and held meaning for me for the first time. I began to have a strange ‘hunger’ for what I was reading. Words jumped off the pages of my little New Testament and Jesus took on the form and persona of a real, living, breathing person. I began to understand. In fact, you could say that I met Jesus and that He became more than real to me. So, what do I know? Not a lot about history or about Churchill. But I do know that the gospel accounts ring true – read them for yourself and see. I know Jesus personally. I know that He loves me far and above the common understanding of love. I know from the evidence of my own heart that He is alive and real. It’s hard to say that someone doesn’t exist when you actually have a daily close encounter with them. So how about you? What do you know? Churchill, villain or hero; the gospels, true or not?
