Welcome to Coronado Playhouse and our production of Dogfight! On behalf of the CPH Staff and Board of Directors, we thank you for being part of this show. We are so pleased to present this award-winning musical written by the creative team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the artists responsible for the scores of La-La Land, The Greatest Showman, and the Broadway hit, Dear Evan Hanson. We would also like to thank our donors and patrons whose generosity allows us to produce shows of this caliber. Maintaining this high level of production quality requires significant financial support and we are eternally grateful to our members, subscribers and other patrons who help bridge the gap between ticket revenues and production costs.Dogfight marks our fourth out of six mainstage shows this season. We are officially at our halfway mark! Rounding out the end of CPH’s 73rd Season is William Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale and the ABBA-fueled Mamma Mia......and then? We are so excited to present our 74th Season! CPH’s 2020 slate of shows takes

us from the classroom of a small village in England to the coast of Florida and beyond. Starting in January, bring your whole family and join us for Matilda, the Tony Award-winning classic by Roald Dahl. Following Matilda will be the madcap shenanigans of Ken Ludwig’s Moon Over Buffalo. Opening in the spring will be Anything Goes, a classic musical with an unbeatable score and a slew of tap-dancing sailors. The second half of our 74th will include the marvelously murderous Richard III as part of CPH’s Free Classics Series, followed by Catch Me if You Can, the high-flying musical comedy based on the hit film. There’s one more surprise in store for you, our audience, and we can’t reveal it just yet… Stay tuned for more information on our season closer, but until then, our lips are sealed!Enjoy the show!Desha Crownover CPH Board Member

In today’s context, what you are about to see will make you un-comfortable. But amidst its profanity and machismo, Dogfight doesn’t condone the men’s treatment of the women, but rather

shines a harsh spotlight on a long-standing ugly military tradition. On November 21, 1963 – the eve of President Kennedy’s assassination and at the dawning of the women’s liberation movement – this group of teenage boys will be packed off to a country they know nothing about. A time when equality between the sexes was nowhere close to being a reality and when Americans truly believed they were untouchable. A day later, that belief would implode and the slow erosion of America’s idealism would begin. These boys expect to return home to a hero’s welcome, never considering the possibility of death or coming back to be treated as scorned symbols of a contentious conflict. And the dogfight itself can arguably be viewed as one step on the Marines’ road to dehumanization, of

themselves and others, as they embark on a journey halfway around the world to kill with zero hesitation.Art is a useful and powerful way to tackle such topics, and this script does it with such honesty and beauty. The women in this show are put into an incredibly ugly situation, but they also exude a level of strength that many can connect to and find inspiration in.Through the events of this evening, Rose and Eddie begin to throw off their constraints and discover things in themselves that surprise them, break them down, strengthen them, and lead them to see a world beyond. As Rose sings in Act II: “See a world beautiful and strange. It’s so close, don’t let it get away. There’s so much to do before it’s over.”This production is lovingly dedicated to all those who have served our country and who continue to serve. But mostly, it’s a tribute to two of the best people I’ve ever known. My maternal grandfather aka “Grandpa” Bowden James Willoughby, US Marine Corps Tech Sergeant, recipient of the Bronze StarMy paternal grandfather aka “Poppy” James Paul Brown, US Navy Chief Petty Officer Thank you, Teri Brown
