This coming Saturday evening (July 8th), a er the 4pm Mass, we’ll have a barbeque for the Crossroads Pro Life Walkers. They are making their way across the country witnessing to the dignity of human life, from natural con-cep on to natural death.

See h ps://www.crossroadswalk.org/ Bring some meat to cook and a dish to pass to the recto-ry before Mass and join us a er. Come meet the walkers. Joining us for that barbeque will be the TOTUS TUUS team serving the children, and young people from Coro-na on, and their friends in the upcoming week. Please come and meet the team that will be serving our children and young people and be sure to sign up for the week-long program. Call the par-ish office or see the parish website for the forms. This coming Tuesday we will celebrate Independence Day; the 4th of July. We have so much to be thankful in our country and we see new peo-ples arriving s ll because of the life possible here. May Corona on be a family that is always respec ul of life and the young; our future. May we also be a family always welcoming new peoples, with the idea of learning and sharing the best each heritage brings. The Chris an virtues, for fied by prayer and the sacraments, are the greatest way to con nue to evangelize this great land. ~ Fr. Hansen

II. THE ISSUE OF WATER 27. Other indicators of the present situa on have to do with the deple on of natural resources. We all know that it is not possible to sustain the present level of consump on in devel-oped countries and wealthier sectors of society, where the habit of was ng and discarding has reached unprecedented levels. The exploita on of the planet has already exceeded acceptable limits and we s ll have not solved the problem of poverty. 28. Fresh drinking water is an issue of primary importance, since it is indispensable for human life and for suppor ng ter-restrial and aqua c ecosystems. Sources of fresh water are necessary for health care, agriculture and industry. Water sup-plies used to be rela vely constant, but now in many places demand exceeds the sustainable supply, with drama c conse-quences in the short and long term. Large ci es dependent on significant supplies of water have experienced periods of shortage, and at cri cal moments these have not always been administered with sufficient oversight and impar ality. Water poverty especially affects Africa where large sectors of the popula on have no access to safe drinking water or experience droughts which impede agricultural produc on. Some coun-tries have areas rich in water while others endure dras c scar-city. 29. One par cularly serious problem is the quality of water available to the poor. Every day, unsafe water results in many deaths and the spread of water-related diseases, including those caused by microorganisms and chemical substances. Dysentery and cholera, linked to inadequate hygiene and wa-ter supplies, are a significant cause of suffering and of infant mortality. Underground water sources in many places are threatened by the pollu on produced in certain mining, farm-ing and industrial ac vi es, especially in countries lacking ade-quate regula on or controls. It is not only a ques on of indus-trial waste. Detergents and chemical products, commonly used in many places of the world, con nue to pour into our rivers, lakes and seas. 30. Even as the quality of available water is constantly dimin-ishing, in some places there is a growing tendency, despite its scarcity, to priva ze this resource, turning it into a commodity subject to the laws of the market. Yet access to safe drinkable water is a basic and universal human right, since it is essen al to human survival and, as such, is a condi on for the exercise of other human rights. (con nued next column)

(30. con nued below) Our world has a grave social debt towards the poor who lack access to drinking water, because they are denied the right to a life consistent with their inalienable dignity. This debt can be paid partly by an increase in funding to provide clean water and sanitary services among the poor. But water con nues to be wasted, not only in the developed world but also in devel-oping countries which possess it in abundance. This shows that the problem of water is partly an educa onal and cultural issue, since there is li le awareness of the seriousness of such behaviour within a context of great inequality. 31. Greater scarcity of water will lead to an increase in the cost of food and the various products which depend on its use. Some studies warn that an acute water shortage may occur within a few decades unless urgent ac on is taken. The envi-ronmental repercussions could affect billions of people; it is also conceivable that the control of water by large mul na on-al businesses may become a major source of conflict in this century.

As Jesus reminds us that he is the vine and we are the branches, and it is the branches through whose nourishment enlivens the vine, so it is with parish ministries and organiza ons. There are many ministries and organiza ons by which our parish is enriched – some of which require occasional par cipa on, and others which entail regular service. One does not become a parishioner simply by a ending Sunday Mass. Your involvement in one of these ministries and organiza ons will not only enrich your life, but it will also vitalize the communion of faith we enjoy at Corona on of Our Lady.

“Coming to his senses at last, he said: ‘How many hired hands at my father’s place have more than enough to eat, while here I am starv-ing! I will break away and return to my father, and say to him, Father, I have sinned . . .’” Luke 15:17-18 This past week, our diocesan staff was led in a day of recollec on by Father Donald Gibbs, O.S.B., a monk of Concep on Abbey. During one of his talks, he asked each of us to think of our lives as a film, and then asked us which parts of our life we would choose to edit out if we were able to do so. In other words, going back, what would end up on the cu ng room floor? It’s an interes ng ques on. Most of us would think first of the stupid-est mistakes we ever made, the foolish choices, sins, and bad deci-sions; but also the bad things that others did to us. Perhaps there was an unforeseen accident that caused great suffering, or an illness that debilitated us. The point of the exercise was to reflect on the fact that we tend to want to include only the good things, like a pris ne Facebook page full of great photos and happy experiences, and edit out the bad things. But, it is o en the “bad stuff” that was the occasion for our most important encounters with God, much like the bad stuff in the parable of the Prodigal Son. Saint Paul even reflected on his former life of extreme hatred in a different light once he encountered Jesus and was converted. God’s love and grace transforms and even uses the “bad stuff” for our good and the good of others. The point is an important one. The bad things are not really good, they cause great pain, shame, and regret. But, the bad things are not the final word, they don’t define us, especially if we have encoun-tered Christ and his mercy. I o en tell people sin is not the worst thing in the world; God can handle our sin—any sin. The worst thing in the world is to not turn to God with your sin, to despair, unrepent-ant or unforgiving. Sin has been defeated, and God’s love can heal us of anything we’ve done or that others have done to us. God is also able to transform all of it into a pathway to redemp on and life. Good news indeed! As our “movie” con nues to be produced, let us see all that has gone before in the light of knowing Christ, even the bad stuff. –Bishop James V. Johnston, Jr.

Tell Your Senators to Insist on Changes to the Be er Care Recon-cilia on Act of 2017. On Thursday, June 22, Senate leadership unveiled their version of a health care bill that would repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has stated that he aims to bring the bill to a vote before the 4th of July recess, which begins at the end of the day on Friday, June 30. Due to the bill’s open-amendment process, your Senators have the ability to significantly alter the bill from its present form before it is brought to a vote. Con-tac ng your Senators in the next several days could make a seri-ous impact on the final text of the bill. We recommend the following three changes to the Senate health care bill, en tled the Be er Care Reconcilia on Act of 2017. 1. Strip out harmful changes to Medicaid that will wreak havoc on the poor and vulnerable, including the per capita caps; 2. Ensure that any health care legisla on includes protec ons for the unborn in all respects, including Hyde amendment prohibi-

ons on use of federal funds on abor ons or plans that cover it. 3. Include conscience protec ons for those involved in the healthcare system. For more details on the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ engagement on this issue, please see the statement released Thursday, June 22, on the USCCB website here. Follow the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on Twi er, like them on Face-book, or check their website for further updates.

From Death to New Life

Parish Memorials Parish members have asked about how to designate financial memorials. Here are some examples: Capital Improvement Fund This fund is specific and is dedicated to the improvement, not the maintenance of the parish property and facili es. It is with-in the scope of this fund to assist in, not fund, the replacement of roofs, windows, carpe ng, hea ng, plants, office equip-ment, etc. Renova on Fund This fund is specific in vision and long term. The celebra on of the liturgy is the primary reason for the existence of a parish and occasionally the parish structures may be in need of a cos-me c renewal. Addi ons to either fund can be made in the forms of stock, cash or bequests in memory of family members or friends. Monies designated for this purpose cannot be used for capital improvements or for other obliga ons. Golden Leaf Tree Located in the ves bule, leaves are engraved with your loved ones’ name and date of death.
