For the first time ever Coronation street have now got a regular disabled character within their programme, although they have had some people on their show before they have not been regular customers. On February 15th 2010 she began shooting scenes for the storyline.

• Ruth Malkin, access co-ordinator at the Disabled People’s Network Manchester, commented on the news: “Obviously we think it’s a positive thing to see a disabled person on television in a programme which is not a documentary show focusing on their disability.”She added that the organisation hopes the programme tackles “the environmental and attitude barriers” faced by disabled people in the real world.

• There are approximately 750,000 wheelchair users currently living in the UK, according to disability charity Kids.
