Pneumococcal Vaccination Service Shingles Vaccination Service
The pneumococcal vaccination aims to prevent a range of serious illnesses such as pneumonia, septicaemia and meningitis. In adults the vaccination is recommended for everybody aged 65 years and over, and only in those aged 18 to 64 years with certain medical conditions,* those who smoke or who are exposed to metal fumes through their work (ie. welders).†
Shingles is caused by the same virus as chickenpox, the herpes-zoster virus. It can be reactivated when the immune system weakens due to increasing age, stress, or certain conditions and treatments eg. cancer. It can be very painful and the older you are, the worse it can be. The vaccination can be provided to people aged 50 or over.† The vaccination aims to help reduce the risk of developing shingles and also the risk of developing severe nerve pain called post herpetic neuralgia if you do get shingles.
