The British Interplanetary Societythe british interplanetary society promotes the exploration and use of space for the benefit of humanity, by connecting people to create, educate and inspire, and advance knowledge in all aspects of astronautics.

The British Interplanetary Society (BIS) is one of the world’s leading think tanks on space development. The BIS organises lectures and conferences, produces general and technical publications, brings its members together to network and cooperate on projects, informs space policy and it represents the UK in space activities throughout the world.

A rich pAst of creAting the futureFounded in 1933, the BIS is the world’s longest-established organisation devoted to forwarding the utilisation of space.• Jointly founding the International Astronautical

Federation in 1951, the pivotal global body in astronautics

• Publishing concepts such as geostationary satellites and moon-landing vehicles two or three decades before they became a reality

• Championing the British space industry from the beginning, promoting its value to the public and government, helping its members to cooperate on projects, and participating in the founding of the biannual UK Space Conference

Active globAlly in todAy’s spAce industryThe BIS has played a pivotal role in space development and policy with strong links to government, the UK Space Agency, industry and other space organisations. • Organising the UK Pavilion at the annual International

Astronautical Congress and serving on the IAC programme and other IAF committees

• Providing conferences and policy inputs on key current topics such as Space Law and Regulation, space debris, reusable launch vehicles and spaceports

• Running the UK’s annual Sir Arthur Clarke Awards for space-related achievement on behalf of the Washington-based Arthur C. Clarke Foundation

• Running technical projects to develop new possibilities from current technologies such as quarter-cube satellites and nanosat launch vehicles

• Active in public outreach, as UK coordinator for the UN’s World Space Week, organiser of its own events and supporter of shows like New Scientist Live

• Promoting and supporting STEM Education through Space applications and the development of a science and technology A-Level

renowned experts in whAt’s coming nextThe BIS remains one of the world’s most forward-looking space organisations.• It publishes the Journal of the Britsh Inteplanetary

Society, at the forefront of promoting new concepts for space exploration since the 1930s

• It hosts the Reinventing Space Conference (RISpace) focused on innovation in space with 300 attendees annually, including space agency directors, CEOs from industry , government ministers and leading academics

• It continues to push the boundaries of the future: spaceports, planetary colonisation, space elevators, interstellar probes and more

• It has a leadership role pushing forward the role and influence of fellow world space societies and their 200,000 individual members

organised by the bis, reinventing space is a conference and exhibition dedicated to one of the space industry’s fastest growing sectors – low cost access and utilisation of space.

Taking place annually, RISpace brings together a network of innovators from industry, agency, government, financiers, academia and end users. It highlights the trends that will define space enterprise a decade from now.

RISpace has featured major initiatives in spaceports, constellations, on-orbit servicing/manufacturing, active/passive remote sensing, solar system exploration,

commercialisation and applications. Since 2014, eight major industry launches have taken place at the conference.

the Call for Papers period takes place during the Spring months in the UK. 33 oral papers are then selected to be presented. RISpace features keynotes, panels, sessions, an exhibition and a careers event over three days in November.
