Telecommunication has supported the socioeconomic development of India and has played a significant
role to narrow down the rural-urban digital divide to some extent. It also has helped to increase the
transparency of governance with the introduction of e-governance in India
1.2 HISTORY
The history of Indian telecom can be started with the introduction of telegraph. The Indian postal
and telecom sectors are one of the worlds oldest. In 1850, the first experimental electric telegraph line
was started between Calcutta and Diamond Harbour. In 1851, it was opened for the use of the British
East India Company. The Posts and Telegraphs department occupied a small corner of the Public Works
Department, at that time.
Subsequently, the construction of 4,000 miles (6,400 km) of telegraph lines connecting Kolkata
(then Calcutta) and Peshawar in the north along with Agra, Mumbai (then Bombay) through Sindwa
Ghats, and Chennai (then Madras) in the south, as well as Ootacamund and Bangalore was started in
November 1853. William O'Shaughnessy, who pioneered the telegraph and telephone in India, belonged
to the Public Works Department, and worked towards the development of telecom throughout this
period. A separate department was opened in 1854 when telegraph facilities were opened to the public.
In 1890, two telephone companies namely The Oriental Telephone Company Ltd. and The
Anglo-Indian Telephone Company Ltd. approached the Government of India to establish telephone
exchanges in India. The permission was refused on the grounds that the establishment of telephones was
a Government monopoly and that the Government itself would undertake the work. In 1891, the
Government later reversed its earlier decision and a license was granted to the Oriental Telephone
Company Limited of England for opening telephone exchanges
At Calcutta, Bombay, Madras and Ahmedabad and the first formal telephone service was
established in the country. On 28 January 1892, Major E. Baring, Member of the Governor General of
India's Council declared open the Telephone Exchanges in Calcutta, Bombay and Madras. The exchange
in Calcutta named the "Central Exchange" had a total of 93 subscribers in its early stage. Later that year,
Bombay also witnessed the opening of a telephone exchange.

CHAPTER – 2
BHARTI AIRTEL LIMITED
2.1 INTRODUCTION
Bharti Airtel Limited , commonly known as Airtel , is an Indian
multinational telecommunications services company headquartered in New Delhi, India. It operates in
20 countries across South Asia, Africa, and the Channel Islands. Airtel has a GSM network in all
countries in which it operates, providing 2G, 3G and 4G services depending upon the country of
operation. Airtel is the world's third largest mobile telecommunications company by subscribers, with
over 275 million subscribers across 20 countries as of July 2013. It is the largest cellular service
provider in India, with 192.22 million subscribers as of August 2013. Airtel is the third largest in-
country mobile operator by subscriber base, behind China Mobile and China Unicom.Airtel is the largest
provider of mobile telephony and second largest provider of fixed telephony in India, and is also a
provider of broadband andsubscription television services. It offers its telecom services under the
"airtel" brand, and is headed by Sunil Bharti Mittal.
Bharti Airtel is the first Indian telecom service provider to achieve Cisco Gold Certification. It
also acts as a carrier for national and international long distance communication services. The company
has a submarine cable landing station at Chennai, which connects the submarine cable
connecting Chennai and Singapore.
Airtel is credited with pioneering the business strategy of outsourcing all of its business
operations except marketing, sales and finance and building the 'minutes factory' model of low cost and
high volumes. The strategy has since been copied by several operators. Its network — base stations,
microwave links, etc. — is maintained by Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Network . whereas IT support is
provided by IBM, and transmission towers are maintained by another company (Bharti Infratel Ltd. in
India). Ericsson agreed for the first time to be paid by the minute for installation and maintenance of
their equipment rather than being paid up front, which allowed Airtel to provide low call rates of1/minute (US$0.02/minute). During the last financial year (2009 – 10), Bharti negotiated for its strategic
partner Alcatel-Lucent to manage the network infrastructure for the tele-media business. On 31 May
2012, Bharti Airtel awarded the three-year contract to Alcatel-Lucent for setting up an Internet
Protocol access network (mobile backhaul) across the country. This would help consumers access
internet at faster speed and high quality internet browsing on mobile handsets

3.4 MARKETING STRATEGIES -
1 . P R OM O TIONAL STRATEGY
Airtel to ―Touch Tomorrow‖ with a new brand vision. The Bharti Mobile promoted AirTel
cellular service will go in for repositioning of its brand image. The new brand ethos is portrayed in two
distinct fashions - the tag line"TouchTomorrow", which underscores the leading theme for the new
brand vision, followed by "The Good Life", which underscores a more caring, more customer centric
organization. Aimed at re-engineering its image as just simply a cellular service provider to an all out
information communications services provider, Touch Tomorrow is meant to embrace the new
generation of mobile communication services and the changing scope of customer needs and aspirations
that come along with it. The new communication is about a new dimension in the cellular category thatgoes beyond the Internet, SMS, roaming, IVRS, etc. but which engulfs the whole gamut of wireless
digital broadband services that will constitute tomorrows cellular services. The new campaign is in two
phases - the first of which will communicate overall brand philosophy and the second products and
services. According to Mr. Jagdish Kini, Chief Operating Officer, Bharti Mobile Limited, Karnataka
"We are adopting a new brand- platform - Touch Tomorrow - not only to reflect our corporate ethos but
also business strategy". The new identity will have the logo in Red, Black and White colours along with
lower case typography to convey warmth. AirTel will incorporate the latest branding in all of its
communication and will soon be going in for an enhanced promotional drive to establish the brand's
presence.

4. TARGET MARKET SEGMENT
Airtel has targeted the premium and upper middle class. The rationale behind it is that only those
segments should be targeted who value time and have the paying capacity. It also planning to target the
business tourists during their stay in the capital about 60% of the clientele are top executives of
corporate houses. About 15% are foreign organisations and the rest are professionals and small
businessmen. During the introduction stage there was intense pressure to get consumers across tohook up with their brand, because getting them to switch brand loyalty later would be hard So far Airtel
marketers have been concentrating totally on the business executive class but now that the basic viable
volumes has beer) built up and prices have declined to a certain extent they are planning to venture
further afield.

CHAPTER-5
CONCLUSION
India‘s telecommunications network is the second largest in the world and has one of the lowest
call tariffs. The industry has grown over twenty times in just ten years, from under 37 million
subscribers in the year 2001 to over 846 million subscribers in the year 2011. India has the world‘s
second largest mobile phone user base and third largest internet user base. The history of Indian telecom
can be started with the introduction of telegraph. In 1980, two telephone companies namely The Oriental
Telephone Company Ltd. And The Anglo-Indian Telephone Company Ltd. approached the Govt. of
India to establish telephone exchanges in India. There are so many major players of the sector are asVodafone, BSNL, MTNL, Reliance, Aircel etc.
Bharti Airtel Ltd. commonly known as Airtel is an Indian multinational telecommunications
Services Company headquartered in New Delhi, India. Airtel providing 2G, 3G and 4G services
depending upon the country of operation. It is the largest cellular service provider in India and the third
largest in country mobile operator. In 1995, Bharti Cellular launched cellular services in Delhi. In the
present scenario, Airtel launched so many new schemes like the GPRS services for prepaid customers,
‗Airtel broadband friendly offer‘, full talk time advantage card etc. subsidiary companies are BhartiHecaom, Bharti Comtel, and Bharti Aquanet etc. It has been awarded the ‗Best Service Provider‘ and
has been voted as India‘s most trusted service branded in the Annual Economic Times.
Bharti Airtel is on the path of success. The income of Bharti Airtel is increased rapidly in the
year 2013 as compare to past years. Shareholding pattern of Bharti Airtel is also very good.
Bharti Airtel is the largest telecom operator in the world and having the high brand visibility. It
has strong advertising schemes. There are always two sides of a coin, so it has also some weaknesses
like price competition with Vodafone and BSNL and untapped rural market. There are some
opportunities also like fast expanding cellular market, latest and low cost technology. The threats of
Bharti Airtel are new entrant‘s low price offering and saturation point in the basic telephony service.
