Exceptional Quality & Ultra-Low VibrationThe Benchmark Coin Test A symbol of Clean Energy Compression’s quality commitment is system operation so smooth that a dollar coin can be balanced on a 250 HP compressor block while operating.

Clean Energy Compression sets the benchmark for exceptional quality as symbolized by the ultra-low vibration CleanCNG™ compressor. The Canadian one dollar coin was chosen not only because of Clean Energy Compression’s Canadian engineering & manufacturing, but because the coin itself is unstable—with a ratio of almost 14:1 diameter to width (26.5 mm in diameter and only 1.95 mm thick). This is similar to a United States quarter and significantly less stable than the 10:1 ratio for a one Euro coin (23.25 diameter X 2.33 mm thickness). If you can balance a one dollar Canadian coin on an operating 250 HP reciprocating compressor, you know it’s been designed and manufactured to incomparable standards.

A BOUT

Technology

Non-Lubricated CompressionCNG TechnologyAs an alternative fuel, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has a number of advantages:

> Lower Cost

> Higher Efficiency

> Lower Emissions

> Lower Engine Noise Level

> Longer Engine Life

The core principle to realizing the full benefits of CNG fuel is reliable and efficient system performance; compressor units with lower energy consumption and maintenance costs deliver a significantly better overall return on investment. It is also critical to consider how fuel quality might impact fleet performance and customer loyalty.

Oil ContaminationThe cylinders in a natural gas compressor are similar to those in a car engine: pistons move up and down the cylinders to create pressure. A seal between the piston side and the cylinder wall is maintained using piston rings that move freely with the aid of an oil lubricant. In an engine, any oil that makes its way into the chamber is simply burnt in the combustion process. Because there is no combustion in natural gas compression, lubricant oil becomes a vapor or aerosol; the effect of this contamination is known as “oil carry over.”

Technology

9

TECHNOLOGY

Lubricated CompressorsConventional “lubricated compressors” contaminate CNG fuel by injecting up to two liters of oil into the compression cylinders per day. This type of compressor uses oil separators, multi-stage oil filters, comprehensive maintenance and replacement procedures to minimize oil carry over and mitigate potential damage to the CNG system and vehicles that it fuels. However, removing vaporized oil from a hot gas stream (due to the heat of compression) is far from an easy or exact science.

Non-Lubricated CompressorsThe best solution to oil carry over is simply not to introduce oil into the compression process. Clean Energy Compression’s CleanCNG™ compressors are non-lubricated and use a type of Teflon

composite piston ring that does not require oil in the cylinder. The only oil in a CleanCNG™ non-lubricated natural gas compressor is in the crank case. As a result, not only is the oil carry over less than 5 parts per million (about the same as one would be allowed to breathe from a scuba tank), but the compressor only uses about one liter of oil every 5,000 hours of operation, versus two liters every day in a lubricated machine.

Natural gas vehicle fuel systems and engines, as well as CNG stations, perform optimally with very low oil contamination levels. It has been demonstrated that non-lubricated compressors have a number of advantages versus lubricated compressors in CNG applications.1

1 See www.cleanenergyfuels.com/compression for white papers and usage studies on non-lubricated CNG compression.

10

TECHNOLOGY

Benefits of Non-Lubricated CompressionEffects of Oil Carry Over Oil carry over (aerosol and oil vapor) in CNG has a significant negative influence on natural gas vehicles, engines, maintenance and operation of CNG stations:

> Oil vapor and small aerosols accumulate in fuel tanks and storage vessels, diminishing storage capacity, vehicle range and even efficiency due to dead weight.

> Oil aerosol affects the compressor heat exchanger surfaces, resulting in hotter discharge gases that reduce the storage capacity and consume more compressor power.

> Oil carry over increases vehicle emissions during engine combustion.

> Maintenance and replacement of oil separators and filters will affect the CNG station maintenance costs and overall downtime. This will also increase the accumulation of waste oil, which is a toxic substance and must be disposed of properly (often at a significant cost).

> Inside a CNG vehicle, onboard CNG is stored at 20 MPa and is regulated to 0.7 MPa by a regulator and then injected into the engine. There are many examples of oil soaking the regulator diaphragm, affecting its accuracy and, in some cases, causing the regulator to malfunction.

> Fleet managers have observed oil contamination effects on sensors inside engine blocks, negatively impacting performance and even fuel economy of vehicles.

The Power of Non-Lubricated Compressors> Cleaner CNG fuel. Non-lubricated

compressors produce the highest quality of gas.

> High reliability and longevity. Many years of reliable service can be expected from a well-designed and maintained non-lubricated compressor.

> Reduced operating costs. Using non-lubricated compressors eliminates the need for regular oil and filter replacements, reducing costly station maintenance and downtime.

> Increased efficiency. By minimizing the build-up of impurities (specifically oil) in the storage tanks, piping and valves, CleanCNG™ allows for increased efficiency and consistent fuel performance, while reducing engine wear and maintenance costs.

TECHNOLOGY

Clean Energy Compression AdvantagesFive Exclusive Benefits1. With proven, world-class experience, Clean Energy Compression is the largest and only exclusive

manufacturer of non-lubricated CNG compressors globally.

2. Clean Energy Compression’s non-lubricated compressors set the global standard for minimum oil carry over in CNG compressors without the waste, cost and negative environmental issues of additional filters, auto oil drain systems and supplementary oil tanks. Non-lubricated compressors use 95% less oil than conventional systems (5 PPM or less vs. 100 PPM or more).

3. Clean Energy Compression provides fully-engineered total CNG compressor packages and fueling solutions. Clean Energy Compression’s engineering group designs and builds the system end to end with every piece specifically developed to work together, perform reliably and support scalability needs. When Clean Energy Fuels set out to build the world’s largest natural gas fueling network, a proven, reliable, modular, and consistent compressor design was critical. They chose to acquire Clean Energy Compression to do so.

4. Clean Energy Compression is the world’s only manufacturer that offers the advantages of multiple modular configurations. This modularity allows for units to be adjusted to provide variable supply for higher efficiency at low demand periods, full redundancy and enhanced reliability.

5. Standardized design across a wide performance spectrum reduces project risk. Clean Energy Compression covers the widest spectrum of compression performances with a standard compressor block. Service and commissioning times and costs are reduced as our partners maintain inventory of more common parts and require less training.

Modular Design Philosophy

New Cross-Platform ApproachClean Energy Compression adopted a new design philosophy that reinvented the company’s proven product offering from the ground up and radically influenced the ongoing nature of the product development road map.

Clean Energy Compression’s modular design approach uses pre-constructed, individually tested sub-assemblies. When these sub-assemblies are brought together, they create a more reliable, smooth operating (lower vibration) and quiet compressor.

Reducing Noise & Vibration, Increasing ReliabilityInstead of building up from a flat “skid” or platform frame with many attached components and bracings, Clean Energy Compression uses a smaller number of highly rigid, complete monocoque sub-assemblies, each of which is rotationally, electrically and/or pressure tested well in advance of final product assembly. The result is a faster, more efficient build with higher performance and reliability. The modular design offers an exceptionally rigid unit, displaying ultra-low vibration, reduced noise, extended product life and reliability.

Maximum Application Range and Site FlexibilityIndividual Clean Energy Compression compressors and pressure reduction systems are designed to stand alone or scale. As site requirements change or mission critical redundancy is desired, units can be connected seamlessly in a series like building blocks. Modular design allows the addition of expansion modules to the initial units in a space-efficient, fully integrated system. Controls, service access, air flow efficiencies and modular enclosures have all been designed to allow for a system that can be extended over and over, while retaining every service, performance and control benefit associated with the initial single module.

Safe, Efficient AccessClean Energy Compression’s design philosophy holds ease-of-service as a top priority. Equipment designed with serviceability in mind means quicker service, reduced cost and shutdown time. With over 30 years of experience supporting products in over 30 countries worldwide, Clean Energy Compression’s Customer Care team and field technicians have gained extensive field experience and understanding of servicing requirements, in diverse environments.

Clean Energy Compression’s Research and Development department employs the most senior Master Field Technicians full time within the design group, adding integral practical maintenance considerations to the design of each new product. Each model is put through its paces in CAD throughout the design process and sign-off is required from maintenance professionals before any design change is approved.

The partnership of design engineers and field service technicians has resulted in innovative, service-friendly features. A recent innovation is the integrated internal crane-rail system for the CleanCNG™ compressor which allows a single technician to quickly and easily hook up heavy compressor block components during a scheduled re-build and easily “roll” them out the door without a struggle or danger of injury.

Clean Energy Compression is a manufacturer of total solutions, as opposed to simply packaging components to meet a requirement. Compressor systems are designed and built from the ground up, allowing for the control of quality, performance and serviceability of product lines on a continuous basis.

Clean Energy Compression’s cross-platform design philosophy provides global clients with the best total cost of ownership, quality and performance, both now and into the future.

Off-Pipeline Gas Delivery FacilitiesClean Energy Compression’s CNG-based virtual pipeline applications have enabled customers worldwide to take advantage of the substantial cost reduction and environmental benefits of converting to natural gas without waiting for expensive pipeline or LNG infrastructure.

Ideal for ranges up to 500km beyond the pipeline, Clean Energy Compression’s Fullfill and Maxoffload technology provide efficient and quick loading at source and near-complete offload at destination. This technology makes CNG virtual pipelines an affordable remote energy solution by decreasing the cost per energy unit delivered.

Central to every Clean Energy Compression virtual pipeline solution is the non-lubricated CleanCNG™ compressor platform. Oil carry over is harmful to any CNG application, but the negative impacts become exponential in virtual pipelines where high volumes of gas are processed through this complex industrial system, including chillers, costly tube trailers, automated Pressure Reduction Systems (PRS) and end-user equipment. Clean Energy Compression is the only company worldwide dedicated to non-lubricated virtual pipeline technology.

CNG S TATION CONFIGUR ATIONS

The CNG Virtual Pipeline ModelVirtual pipeline system performance requires sophisticated integration of a variety of elements. Engineering of critical component parts into a unified high-performance system significantly influences fill and off-load performance and ultimately the commercial viability of the virtual pipeline. Essential design factors include cylinder type and diameter, chiller placement, piping specification and the interaction of these elements. Clean Energy Compression has leading expertise in high performing, integrated mobile CNG delivery that has evolved through installations in extreme climates, environments and applications on four continents around the globe.

Replacing high-emitting diesel and bunker fuels with cleaner-burning natural gas offers substantial environmental benefits.

Virtual Pipeline Advantages

Low Cost per Volume Delivered and Larger Viable DistanceClean Energy Compression has worked with Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) companies around the world to develop CNG virtual pipelines. The integration and control of equipment is key to the performance of the system. Each bulk gas system is designed to optimally meet the exact client requirements.

Fullfill Technology Clean Energy Compression’s Fullfill technology ensures that every bulk gas shipment is filled as completely and quickly as possible. Our systems ensure that transport modules are filled at the optimum temperature and gas density through integration of proprietary compression technology, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) continuous thermal management and comprehensive dispensing architecture. The result is up to 10% more fuel loaded onto each trailer run.

Maxoffload TechnologyIn conjunction with CleanCNG™ compressors, Clean Energy Compression’s Pressure Reduction Systems (PRS) maximize offload capacity, ensuring that only a minimal amount of gas is left on the trailer before it is disconnected. This is achieved by using two-line unloading where possible, designing systems for minimal pressure drop and employing scavenging compression where necessary to remove remaining gas. This technology pulls up to 10% more fuel off every trailer run.

Proven Scalability by DesignAlong with Clean Energy Compression’s CleanCNG™ compressors, our Pressure Reduction Systems (PRS) have proven scalability to provide standard product to custom applications. There are current systems installed with a capacity of up to 14,000 Nm3/hr. Standard products ensure excellent reliability and quality. It is easy to add more units as demand increases or remove equipment and move to several smaller sites once the gas pipeline arrives.

CNG S TATION CONFIGUR ATIONS

Stranded Grid—Industrial Park and Municipal SupplyIndustrial parks or small municipalities that are off-grid, with no access to a natural gas pipeline, suffer from the expense and pollution of trucked-in diesel or bunker fuel for power and heat generation.

Clean Energy Compression offers companies, utilities and municipalities the opportunity to deploy a clean and cost effective alternative to diesel and bunker fuels. Utilizing a CNG virtual pipeline from a gas supply within 500km, a local “Stranded Grid” or gas line system linking multiple customer locations can receive a continuous natural gas supply as if they were on the grid.

Clean Energy Compression’s integrated OffgridCNG high-efficiency virtual pipeline solution compresses gas at the last mile of the closest natural gas pipeline and loads CNG transport trailers, which transport the gas to the industrial park or town (within 500km of pipeline).

The Clean Energy Compression Pressure Reduction System (PRS) then offloads the CNG and reduces the pressure to utility pipeline pressure. This fuel then feeds the local grid and clients, replacing the former diesel or bunker fuel system.

Industrial or Natural Resource Power and HeatLarge factories or mines are often out of reach of natural gas pipelines and their large heat and electrical generation demands can consume tens of thousands of liters of trucked-in diesel or bunker fuel each day.

Clean Energy Compression works directly with engineering teams or third-party engineering firms and service companies to establish a dedicated CNG virtual pipeline from the nearest natural gas supply. This supply can be used to fully offset the most demanding liquid fuel needs with a clean and cost effective alternative.

Roll-on/Roll-off over Water RequirementsBarge-accessible communities no longer need to bear the expense, pollution, transportation and spill risk of diesel or bunker fuels.

Clean Energy Compression offers companies, utilities and municipalities the opportunity to install a CNG “Mother Station” on-shore, at the nearest natural gas pipeline, where the gas is compressed and loaded onto CNG transport trailers. These trucks then roll onto a local barge, transit to the island and roll off. Then, using a Clean Energy Compression pressure reduction system, the "Daughter Station" feeds a locally installed grid to supply the distributed requirements of the community.

Off-Grid Natural Gas Vehicle Fueling StationsClean Energy Compression has over a decade of experience working with Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) fuel station networks around the world to provide cost effective “Mother-Daughter” CNG virtual pipeline solutions. Gas from the last mile of the available line is compressed onto transport trailers which roll out to provide a steady supply to a network of off-grid NGV stations.
