Dear Readers,

Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd. (TPDDL), a Joint venture of the Tata Power

Company Limited and the Government of Delhi, has been a pioneer in the

Power Distribution Sector in India for almost a decade both in terms of its

leadership in Operational Technology adoption as well as its care towards its

consumers, employees, community and other stakeholders.

We firmly believe that our heritage of returning to society evokes trust among

all stakeholders and is being leveraged to enhance global competitiveness and

long term sustainability. Over the years Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd.

(TPDDL) has adopted the cultural norms of integrating Corporate Social

Responsibility (CSR) with the sustainable business strategy. At TPDDL, CSR

refers the way business is managed to bring about an overall positive impact

on the communities, cultures, societies and environment in which we operate.

TPDDL has 200+ Jhuggi Jhopri (JJ) clusters in its licensed area, and apart from enhancement in distribution services, we

give utmost priority to tirelessly work towards the betterment of the lives of the less privileged sections of the society

residing in these areas. Apart from excellence in service delivery the developmental work carried by company through

CSR over years played a pivotal role in ensuring quality living in these communities.

The year passed witnessed multifold growth in the expansion of CSR projects. The focus of the company was to disseminate benefits of various CSR projects to nook & corner of its area of operation. TPDDL has a robust Affirmative Action plan wherein the focus is on the 4 Es i.e. Education, Employability, Entrepreneurship and Employment. Education & Employability being the key sectors saw a planned growth in terms of projects taken up for Women Literacy & Vocational Training programs. The number of Women Literacy Centers has increased to 290 targeting 17400 beneficiaries annually. Instructors and beneficiaries of this program are further developed as Brand Ambassadors as a part of the ‘Earn While Learn’ program where they are financially engaged in disseminating awareness for various CSR projects and consumer friendly schemes of the companies. TPDDL now operates 10 vocational training centers offering trades that guarantee 100% work placement for the youth of the community. Health and sanitation schemes have been the new intervention areas where company has signed MoU with Delhi Jal Board for installing RO Water installations for providing potable drinking water in JJ clusters & resettlement colonies. These RO plants will be maintained by the SHGs of the WLC program thereby further consolidating TPDDL’s initiatives to enhance employability.

Engaging employees in CSR projects has been another key achievement for the year. Developing a culture of volunteering carried dual benefit of benefitting the communities as well as positive engagement of employees in value creation amongst the needy ones.

Keeping the group focus of Skill, Water, Governance and Education on radar we are expanding in the existing verticals vis a vis diversifying in new arenas during the year ahead. With advent of new CSR Rules we are empowered to take up community development to new heights. I look forward for an enhanced and valuable contribution in the lives of communities by the company; create a win win situation for all stakeholders and wish a progressive year ahead for achieving the milestone of sustainable development. New Year ahead puts across new challenges to meet milestones, of our own and industry, set during the year bygone. As mentioned earlier our focus will be towards creating avenues for entrepreneurship & skill generation programs and maturing them into self-sustainable models. New partnerships & associations will be developed with public & private agencies to have an integrated and specialized approach for development

About TPDDL

Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited [TPDDL] is a joint venture between Tata Power and the Government of NCT of Delhi with the majority stake being held by Tata Power (51%). TPDDL distributes electricity in North & North West parts of Delhi and serves a populace of 6 million. The company started operations on July 1, 2002 post the unbundling of the erstwhile Delhi Vidyut Board (DVB). With a registered consumer base of 14.39 Lacs and a peak load of around 1704 MW, the company’s operations span across an area of 510 sq kms. TPDDL has been the frontrunner in implementing power distribution reforms in the capital city and is acknowledged for its consumer friendly practices. Since privatization, the Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses in TPDDL areas have shown a record decline. AT&C loss is a measure of overall efficiency of the distribution business which is the difference between units input into the system and the units for which the payment is collected. Today, AT&C losses stand at 9.87% which is an unprecedented reduction of around 81% from an opening loss level of 53% in July 2002. TPDDL’s change management experience, distributed leadership system, adoption of latest technology; robust competence development process and innovative & open work culture are the key strategic boosters which helped in building and sustaining competitive advantage in the changing business scenario. TPDDL has created several milestones in its journey so far; it is now focused and committed to the road ahead and is

exploring new opportunities to replicate its experience of distribution reforms both in India and abroad. It is leveraging

its unique learning and skillsets solely and in collaboration with leading utilities and technology providers in the areas

of communications & technology, change management, consumer service delivery and business process re-

engineering.

Tata Power Delhi Distribution has won several accolades for its pioneering efforts in transforming the power distribution scene in its licensed area both at the national and international levels. It has been conferred with the ‘National Award for Meritorious Performance’ thrice by the Ministry of Power, Government of India for outstanding performance in power distribution, “National Award” for Innovative Training practices : 2013 -14 instituted by Indian Society for Training & Development (ISTD) and 11th National Award for Excellence in Cost Management. TPDDL has been ranked 61st in the ‘India's Best Companies to Work for 2014 Survey’ and recognized as 2nd best in the “Best in Class – Energy, Oil and Gas Industry by the Great Places to Work, India. On CSR front, TPDDL was conferred with Corporate Social Responsibility Award in Platts 2014 Global Energy Awards

recognition for significant adoption for companies scoring above 550 in External Assessment.

Tata Commitment

Working towards the betterment of the society in which we operate has always been central to

our operating principles and is aptly highlighted in our CSR Policy. In fact, the parent group, i.e.

the house of TATA's has been the pioneer in designing, developing and implementing various

Social interventions and initiatives, not since the time CSR became popular and in vogue, but since

Page 5: Corporate Social Responsibility Annual Report 2014-15 · CSR Strategy The philosophy of Corporate Social Responsibility as practiced by Tata Group is legacy of its founders. The multitude

when nobody knew or thought of it!!! Our CSR policy provides corroborate to this claim and aims at

imbibing social alignment as a key component of all our business processes and strategy.

‘In a free enterprise, the community is not just another stakeholder in business but is in fact the very purpose of its

Existence’.

Mr. Jamsetji N. Tata; (Founder, Tata Group)

The wealth gathered by Jamsetji Tata and his sons in half a century of industrial pioneering

formed but a minute fraction of the amount by which they enriched the nation. The whole of

that wealth is held in trust for the people and used exclusively for their benefit. The cycle is

thus complete; what came from the people has gone back to the people many times over.

Every company has a special continuing responsibility towards the people of the area in which

it is located and in which its employees and their families live. In every city, town or village,

large or small, there is always a need for improvement, for help, for relief, for leadership and

for guidance. I suggest that the most significant contribution organized industry can make is

by identifying itself with the life and problems of the people of the community to which it belongs and by applying its

resources, skills and talents, to the extent that it can reasonably spare them to serve and help them.- Mr. J. R. D. Tata

The philosophy of corporate social responsibility as practiced by Tata Group is legacy of its

founders. The multitude of community initiatives the group has sowed and fostered from its

earliest days flows from this wellspring voluntary, as opposed to obligatory commitment. -

Ratan N. Tata

We will build on the already strong foundations that have been created for engaging with

communities. As with any of our businesses, we will leverage our managerial capabilities to ensure

we bring innovation to our Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, optimize their effectiveness,

and seek to create measurable impact for our Group as a whole.

CSR Strategy

The philosophy of Corporate Social Responsibility as practiced by Tata Group is legacy of its founders. The multitude of community initiatives the group has sown and fostered from its earliest days flows from this wellspring voluntary, as opposed to obligatory commitment. It is seen to stretch beyond the statutory obligation to comply with legislation and the companies voluntarily taking further steps to improve the quality of life for the local community and society at large. At TPDDL, rich heritage and unmatchable legacy of Tata group for holistic development of underprivileged communities, societies & nation becomes the guiding force for adoption of community development initiatives. There are 200+ listed JJ clusters & resettlement colonies fall in company’s area of operation. The community outreach programs, working on the lines of triple bottom line approach, aims to serve key communities in a systematic & planned way.

Target Communities

200+ JJ clusters and resettlement colonies falling in TPDDL’s area of operation are of varied sizes with inhabitants ranging from couple of hundreds to thousands in a cluster. The residents of these JJ clusters are basically migrants who drifted from their native places to Delhi in search of a better living and employment opportunity. These inhabitants are from different communities, culture, ethnicity and creed. Like every migratory community the individuals residing in these clusters face basic problem of Employment, Health,

Hygiene, Education and Infrastructure. These clusters also have a very high representation of SC/ST communities which

further emphasizes on the need for inducing various developmental initiatives there. Creating avenues for education,

health services, skill generation programs and empowering communities in these clusters and employees of Business

Associates has been the primary objectives of community development at TPDDL.

Education – Empowering women for a brighter tomorrow

Women Literacy Program:

It has been seen and simultaneously proven that literacy enhances human capital in societies. As more and more

women become literate, we see a ripple effect in other areas of their lives as well such as an improvement in their

reproductive health and a sharp dip in infant mortality rates.

Target Beneficiaries: Illiterate adult women residing in JJ clusters & resettlement colonies.

The women residing in these clusters are mostly illiterate who have never had an opportunity to enroll for formal education. Lack of basic education has put severe roadblocks in their intellectual and economic development. TPDDL identified this concern as one of the intervention areas and ventured into an adult literacy program for women in 2006-07. The intent of the program has been to impart functional literacy to these women so that they become adept in carrying out their daily tasks such as doing grocery shopping which involves knowing basic mathematics and communicating with others. The idea is that they should become independent and confident human beings. These Women Literacy Centers (WLCs) work on an animated module ‘Computer Based Functional Literacy program (CBFL)’ designed by Tata Consultancy Services. CBFL is animated software which provides basic knowledge of numerals, alphabets and language in a very simple and easy manner. An educated woman is identified as the teacher from the community itself and her home serves as the classroom for the women. The woman selected as the teacher is given training in handling the computer and given a run-through through the course content. The adult literacy module is of six months with classes six days a week and having a duration of 1.5-2 hours. One batch consists of 15 women and two such batches are carried out in a day. A computer system is placed at the teacher’s home where classes are conducted. A coordinator is appointed to look after nearly 12-15 such centers depending on their demographic location. The classes are conducted mostly during the afternoon and evening hours as that is when the women usually get free from their household chores. Along with imparting functional literacy, these beneficiaries are also given awareness sessions on health issues and safety.

Beneficiaries of Women Literacy Program

Simultaneously focusing on their economic development, the passed out beneficiaries are organized into Self Help

Groups. These SHGs are linked with nationalized banks so that the SHG members have a proper bank account in the

name of the SHG and can avail financial assistance later at the stage of maturity. Over 167 SHGs have been linked to

banks and are functioning smoothly.

Apart from serving as a hall of knowledge where these women get functional literacy, these women literacy centers (WLCs) have also culminated into centers for economic excellence wherein a number of welfare and income generation programs are also being carried out. TPDDL has roped in WLC instructors & beneficiaries as Brand Ambassadors in their respective communities where they promote and sensitize communities about various other CSR

programs like vocational training, free health services through mobile dispensaries, drug de-addiction camps, accidental life insurance schemes, etc. The company devised another ingenious scheme of engaging brand ambassadors into the company’s core operation

which is ‘Earn While Learn’ wherein these women are made direct touch points for delivering various commercial

services like distribution of bills, meter reading at homes, payment of arrears, facilitating ‘Pay & Win’ lottery and

processing Accidental Life Insurance scheme for JJ clusters residents. The commercial services handled by the women

of these communities have contributed towards the smooth conduct of our business in these clusters as well as

enabled these women to earn some income and to stand on their own feet.

TPDDL Tutorial Centers

The socio economic status of the families residing in JJ clusters puts constraints on providing quality education to their wards or even a favorable ambience at home to encourage them to study. These children study in schools where poor infrastructure, lack of good quality teachers and inappropriate evaluation system leads to a loss of interest in studies which further proves detrimental in their drop out in higher classes. After getting dropped out from the mainstream education system, these youth either fall into the arena of anti-social activities or they start working very early to support their families and aggravate the problem of child labor. This further results in their exploitation at work place as they are under paid and prone to various addictions.

Target Beneficiaries - Children from standard 1st-10th residing in JJ clusters/Resettlement Colonies; SC/ST communities.

The premises of our vocational training centers are developed with provisions to run Tutorial Classes along with other income-generating trainings. These VT centers are located in the heart of the communities, making them easily accessible to children (both school going and drop outs). The school going students from standard 1st-10th are roped in and are given free supplementary education. The teachers are identified from the community itself having an enthusiasm to teach these underprivileged kids. The kids are not just facilitated with support in their studies but are also groomed in extracurricular activities such as painting, skits, singing, dancing etc. We can proudly say that this program has been able to accomplish its goals as that there hasn’t been single drop out of the students from the formal education system since the commencement of these tutorials. These classes not only ensure the continuation of education of these children, but also ensure that they don’t fall in the company of anti-social elements which are ubiquitously present in these communities. The program contributes towards the holistic development of these kids.

Economic Value Creation – Enabling to Earn

Vocational Training Programs

The working section of the populace residing in the JJ clusters and resettlement colonies is mostly unskilled or semi-skilled. Although the government is making its best efforts to provide every basic amenity of life to these people, there still exist many lacunae such as poor sanitation facilities, absence of adequate health facilities, lack of quality education and gainful employment. These problems are extremely deep rooted. There exists a huge mismatch between the average family size and the family’s income. A family of 6-7 people might have only one bread earner in the house and this leads to unmet nutritional and social needs. Due to inaccessibility to resources such as to structured educational facilities and employment, the youth residing in these colonies turn to various anti-social activities such as thefts and drug addiction as they are not able to find other means to fulfill their dreams and aspirations. Target Beneficiaries – Beneficiaries are from poorest of poor families residing in the JJ clusters/resettlement colonies; SC/ST categories; school dropouts; family members of BA employees.

The skill generation programs aim to train the unemployed youth and school drop-outs, from JJ clusters & resettlement colonies, in various vocations, thus enabling them to either start their own small ventures or get a gainful employment. This leads to an enhanced family income and they are now able to afford the basic amenities of life which are needed to lead a happy and healthy life. By virtue of being service providers in North & North-West of Delhi, we have a certain degree of convenience in the identification of the needy communities and the skill up-gradation needed by them to find a suitable job in the market. Once this is done, an action plan is prepared for imparting the requisite skills to the youth and a program module is prepared. The vocational training programs are individually catering to beneficiaries from 4-5 clusters in & around the centers. These centers are centrally located in the communities, making them easily accessible to the youth, especially women.

The trades with high market demand are identified and their acceptances by the youth to whom they are catering are also gauged. Our partner agencies carry out assessment surveys for the selection of courses ensuring the marketability & engagement of passed out beneficiaries. They are trained in vocations of Computers, Tally, Electrician, Stitching & Tailoring and Beautician. Also, new industry based short term courses of Retail Chain and Office Assistant have also commenced which has very high placement prospects. The courses are certified mostly by Jan Sikshan Sansthan (Ministry of HRD) or similar recognized agencies which carry evaluation exams at the end of these courses and award certificates to the beneficiaries.

The vocations taught at the centers ensure a steady income to the

youth post the completion of these courses. The women oriented

courses like beauty culture and stitching & tailoring provide

avenues for working from home. There are a number of

communities where the concept of women going out to work is

still considered a taboo. Therefore these courses are quite a hit in

such areas. The beneficiaries operates from home and even earn

fortunes during festive & marriage seasons. Pass-outs from

Computers, Tally and Electrician courses got opportunities to work

with IBM, Consultancy Firms, District Courts, various offices and

shops, making a decent livelihood. The recently introduced course of Retail Chain has been providing assured

employment of 100 % to the beneficiaries in brands like West Side, Coffee Day, Fun Cinema etc. Another course being

offered with 100% placement guarantee is of Office Assistant wherein the beneficiaries are trained in back-end work

such as managing operations and logistics in big stores like Big Bazaar.

Health Services – Strengthening Communities

Sanjeevani – Mobile Health Dispensaries:

Open sewers and dr ainages, open defecation and huge garbage piles are some sights that are c ommonplace when one enters these JJ clusters. Such unhygenic living conditions result in the poor health index of JJ clusters & resettlement colony residents. Healthcare takes a backseat as these people struggle to feed and clothe themselves with their meager earnings. Due to this incapability of bearing costs to avail quality medical facilities, they prefer quacks for their treatment which further stretches the suffering of the patient and aggravates their problem. Target Beneficiaries - Residents of JJ clusters & resettlement colonies.

Sanjeevani, TPDDL’s mobile dispensary vans, four in number, equipped with a doctor, a pharmacist, bed and medicines each tend to cater to the day to day health issues of the cluster inhabitants. These vans serve all 200+ JJ clusters by way of making daily visits to these identified clusters in a cycle of three months, covering six clusters in a day each. These vans have covered approximately 58,769 beneficiaries since inception.

The regular payers of electricity are given free consultation & medicines both and the individuals who are defaulters or don’t have a metered connection are given free consultation only. This aims to encourage defaulters & unmetered consumers to become legitimate consumers of electricity. These mobile dispensaries provide quality medicines and consultation to the affected people, which otherwise remains out of their reach as a single visit to a qualified doctor costs them half their monthly salary.

Beneficiaries of Mobile Dispensaries

Drug De-addiction Camps:

The residents of JJ clusters and resettlement colonies are mostly displaced residents and migrant population. However, the reality more often than not is not in sync with their dreams of earning a decent living and hence they

resort to various addictions such as drugs and alcoholism to escape reality. The earning of a family gets drifted from meeting the basic expenses on food, medicines, electricity and their children’s education. The result of this continuous ignorance of necessary needs creates an environment of dearth and dissatisfaction within the communities which further leads to social unrest. Target Beneficiaries – Residents of JJ clusters and Resettlement colonies having various addictions.

To address this alarming situation, TPDDL, in

association with Prajapita Braham Kumaris, organizes camps for JJ cluster & resettlement colony residents. A central location is selected as the venue and camps are scheduled during evening hours when most of the residents return from their day’s work. Munadi is done in the cluster a day prior to the camp & leaflets are also distributed. The beneficiaries are counseled about the ill effects of various addictions through audio visual mode and then given free medicines for the same. Address of nearest Brahm Kumaris’ center is also shared so that they can get free medicines afterwards. To assess the

Beneficiaries of Drug De-Addiction Camps

The services rendered by these drug de-addiction camps are of dual benefit to the community. It not only aids in the

addict quitting the bad habit, it also saves a huge quantum sum of the addict’s earning, which was being spent on this,

giving the family an opportunity to spend it on meeting basic needs and amenities. The success rate of de-addiction

has been approximately 15 % of the total attendants of the camp.

Viklang Margdarshan Kendra – handholding differently abled individuals:

An estimated 10% of the world’s population experiences some form of disability or impairment (WHO Action Plan 2006-2011). There are 2.19 crore people with disabilities in India who constitute 2.13 % of the total population (Census 2001).Such physical inabilities cause hurdles in first getting systematic education and then later in getting gainful employment. Most differently abled individuals are taken as dependents for their entire life. This hampers their confidence and self-esteem. The scenario gets poorer when the individual is from an economically disadvantaged section of society as they cannot afford various medical aids and equipment.

Target Beneficiaries – Differently abled individuals residing in Delhi & NCR.

TPDDL, in association with Viklang Sahara Samiti, runs the Viklang Margdarshan Kendra, wherein we provide all the information and services for the differently abled and also carry out public advocacy & litigation for them, especially for those from the needy sections of the society. The center provides counseling services and assistance to these people in obtaining a disability certificate from concerned hospitals, getting an identity card for the differently abled, rail pass, bus pass, scholarships for differently abled students, and their inclusion in the disable pension scheme of MLAs & Counselors, financing differently abled individuals for starting their own entrepreneurship ventures at a micro level. The center also operates a free helpline number through which any detail on facilities provided to PwDs can be taken from the center.

Installation of RO Plants in JJ Clusters:

Diseases from unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Children are especially vulnerable as their bodies aren’t strong enough to fight diarrhea, dysentery and other illnesses. The WHO reports that over 3.6% of the global disease burden can be prevented simply by improving water supply, sanitation and hygiene. This problem is further aggravated in the JJ clusters as there are open sewerages and absence of proper water supply system thus increasing the chances of water getting infected. During peak summers, they have to go days without any water in the taps and hence end up purchasing water from outside which, in spite of being expensive, is still contaminated.

TPDDL identified this as a grave concern and as one of the most important basic needs of the community. Partnering with Tata Projects, TPDDL has designed an innovative drinking water solution for the community which will not only give them access to clean drinking water but will also provide entrepreneurial opportunities for the women working in Self Help Groups(SHGs) formed by TPDDL in these communities. The RO plants will be manned by the women of the SHGs, who will take care of the operation of plants, disseminating awareness among communities for safe drinking water and its benefits etc. The earnings will be used by SHGs to pay for the cost of electricity, maintenance charges, if any, and the rest of it will be income of the women.

To start with, TPDDL installed 5 RO water plants at Govt. schools falling within the JJ clusters & resettlement colonies. During FY 14-15 nearly 30,000 students benefitted every day. Progressing ahead on the clean drinking water campaign TPDDL signed MoU with Delhi Jal Board, the govt. entity to take care of water supply in the national capital, for installing 100 such water plants in JJ clusters & resettlement colonies by FY 16-17. These 100 RO plants will be managed by SHGs formed by TPDDL in clusters.

Ensuring Environment Sustainability – Conserving for a greener and healthy future

Harit Ek Pahal – Tree Plantation Campaign:

Working towards ensuring a greener future, TPDDL has initiated the tree plantation campaign – ‘Harit Ek Pahal’ in partnership with various stakeholders to carry out massive tree plantation drives across Delhi. TPDDL has tied up with agencies such as CRPF, ITBP, various schools & colleges, RWAs etc. for carrying the plantation drive. TPDDL has been recognized as one of the Greening Agencies of Deptt. Of Forest & Wildlife, GoNCTD. The continuous plantation efforts undertaken by the company have been well praised by Deptt. of Forest & Wildlife, GoNCTD on various platforms.

Energy Club: Sensitization of school students on energy conservation:

With the advancement of science & technology, human civilization has progressed towards a mechanized world where our day to day living is dependent on electricity. The generation and consumption of electricity has become manifold over the decades which have further lead to increased carbon emission. In the present scenario the electricity demand is rising all over the world, more so in developing countries. To bridge the gap between demand & supply of power, it is very much required to ensure a judicious practice for electricity consumption at the domestic and commercial level. Considering the limited quantum of fossil fuels available ‘Electricity Saved is Electricity Generated’ becomes the mantra for sustaining the growth & development. The need of the hour is conservation and judicious use of electricity.

With this thought in mind to bring social and behavioral change in energy usage pattern, TPDDL laid the foundation stone of TPDDL Energy Club with 5 schools as pilot project in October 2004. The Young Turks of our nation, kids from classes VI-IX have been made the change agent for this much needed societal change. Since the inception of TPDDL

Page 16: Corporate Social Responsibility Annual Report 2014-15 · CSR Strategy The philosophy of Corporate Social Responsibility as practiced by Tata Group is legacy of its founders. The multitude

Energy Club, we have disseminated the energy conservation message to lakhs of students, teachers and neighbors from 240 schools and have saved nearly 17.46 lakh units of electricity. The picture of mass sensitization is clearly visible from the outreach of Energy Club among the common masses in our distribution area. In phase VII of TPDDL Energy Club 50 new schools were taken on the membership panel and students were sensitized throughout the year. Urja Mela is celebrated every year as a finale event of TPDDL Energy Club program. In this Mela, students from various schools in our area of operation take part in different competitions to showcase their creativities through painting competition, essay writing, extempore, nukkad nataks and science model competition. The science models were extremely innovative and highly appreciated by our CEO, who further motivated the students by promising that the workable models will be funded by TPDDL for their application in real life. It is a great platform to educate students about this important issue of saving energy so that they can spread this message further in our society. The Urja Cup was awarded to the team which won the most number of competitions and event wise prizes were also distributed.

Employee Volunteering – “Let’s get Engaged”

Somewhere within every human being lies a longing to reach out to others. Volunteerism — the mobilizing of

employees for social causes — encourages that and more.

To produce social change, ordinary people have to be involved; that's the belief gradually taking root in corporate India. Companies are increasingly taking responsibility for wider community initiatives, and volunteerism — the mobilizing of employees for social causes — is a crucial component of the philosophy driving this development. Volunteering at TPDDL is one of the ways in which employees can contribute to the strong values of the Tata group. Employees use their competencies & interests in community upliftment other than their usual course of work that is fruitful for the enhancement of the employees as well as our beneficiaries as both learn and grow from this experience.

TPDDL has been a part of all the Tata Volunteering Week celebrations (I, II and III) since their commencement. Several employee engagement programs such as blood donation camps, sports meet, women’s day celebration, walkathon, awareness rallies, plantation drives, scholarship distribution to SC/ST students etc. were organized during these weeks. TPDDL has also been awarded in ‘Maximum Participation Category’ of Tata Volunteering Week celebration by Tata group chairman Mr. Cyrus Mistry. TPDDL was also conferred with the TATA Engage Award 2015 in the ‘highest number of fresh registrations’ and ‘highest percentage of employee participation.’ categories. TPDDL has taken up many projects which are entirely employee driven. These activities aim to involve employees and

even their family members during working and non-working hours. A brief snapshot of few such programs is as follows:

Blood Donation Camps:

During suitable timings of the year in one of the central office locations for employees, TPDDL, in association with Indian Red Cross Society, organizes blood donation camps where employees, their family members and RWA members donate blood. The donated blood is sent to the blood banks of Red Cross. To enhance the outreach of these camps, the mobile blood collection van from Red Cross goes to smaller offices of TPDDL and carries out blood donation. Being a corporate donor, TPDDL employees can avail facility of blood bags from Red Cross blood bank on the prescription of doctor even if he/she has not donated blood in the camps. TPDDL has been awarded continuously since five years by The Indian Red

Cross society for the contribution made. Contribution made during the years can be seen below:

Warm clothes & book donations for needy ones:

As the weather turns cold during the winters, the disadvantaged sections of society struggle to find some warmth for themselves and their young ones. The bone chilling cold waves make the lives of the street dwellers miserable, especially during the chilly nights. For the assistance of such people, TPDDL regularly organizes warm clothes collection ‘Hands of Warmth’ wherein employees contribute warm clothes, blankets, shoes etc. Collection boxes are placed at all major offices and the contribution made is sent to night shelters and families of women literacy centers & vocational training program beneficiaries.

Similarly, a book collection drive is carried out at the end of every academic session wherein employees donate course books of their wards which are further given to kids studying at TPDDL Tutorial Centers.

Support to Old Age & Orphanages:

There are nearly 275 kids staying in the SOS Bawana child home. TPDDL supports the children staying here. The mobile dispensary of TPDDL, equipped with a doctor, a pharmacist and medicines, visits here every month. These are such kids who have crossed their infancy and are beyond the adoptable age. Volunteers pay regular visits to these homes where they donate utilities and logistics needed for the kids.

Employees with their teams visit old age homes as well and provide requisite support in kind to the occupants. Employees spend quality time with them, as the old ones reminisce about their youth and tell them stories of their past.

This year on International Women’s Day, the women employees of TPDDL conducted an awareness rally on ‘Women Empowerment’. The rally was flagged of by senior women officials of our company. All the women employees participated enthusiastically, carrying banners and placards on this theme as they said out aloud various slogans on social issues such as equal rights for women, women literacy and female feticide. Providing night shelters for homeless

Every year as the winters approach in full swing, the newspaper is filled with headlines of people dying every day as a result of the cold waves. Survival becomes a major struggle for those without a roof over their heads. Providing these souls with a place to stay becomes the need of the hour. To help the homeless survive their way through the harsh Delhi winters, TPDDL, along with the Delhi Government, set up five temporary night shelters wherein the homeless were also provided with blankets and beds from TPDDL. These night shelters catered to more than 250 homeless people every night.

TPDDL’s commitment to Affirmative Action

In the post-independence era, especially since the 1990s, India has seen a new dawn of growth and development. Albeit the socio-economic reforms penetrating into every nook and corner of the country, the existing caste system continued to persist. Even though we boast about India Shining and being one of the fastest growing economies of the world, a large section of underprivileged communities still exist in our country, especially the historically deprived Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Progressing at a very slow pace, their journey towards abolishing hundreds of years of discrimination still appears to be a distant dream. Tata Group, founded on the core belief of “giving back to society”, has been an active proponent of building an inclusive and egalitarian society so that the benefits of social and economic growth are more evenly disbursed across all sections of the society.

TPDDL’s Affirmative Action Program began with the signing the Code for Affirmative Action on February, 2007. The “Policy on Affirmative Action for Scheduled Caste & Scheduled Tribe Communities” was approved by the Board of Directors in July, 2007. Since then, TPDDL has implemented its Affirmative Action program carrying out ground level initiatives in the areas of Education, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Employability catering to the most underprivileged Scheduled Caste and Schedule Tribe communities in its area of operation. Therefore in its unique Tata way, the organization has developed specific approaches to address their needs & in a systematic and sustained manner.
