Inspiring people. Shaping the future.
Who we are
The Bertelsmann Stiftung, founded by Reinhard
Mohn (1921–2009) in 1977, is a nonprofit
organization that functions exclusively as a
private operating foundation. Our goal is to
promote social change. This was the vision of
our founder, and it remains the basic principle
underlying our work.
We are independent and politically
nonpartisan.
As a foundation, we see ourselves as an integral
part of society. We are committed to the values
of freedom, solidarity and humanity and
believe in the benefits of competition.

Global Framework: The basics of Corporate
Responsibility
There is a widely-shared understanding of the fundamentals on which CSR is
based:
OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises
UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights
ILO Core Labor Standards
United Nations Global Compact
These international agreements form the frame of reference for CSR-instruments:
Principles and codes of conduct (e.g. Equator Principles)
Guideline for management systems (e.g. ISO 26.000)
Reporting systems (e.g. Global Reporting Initiative)
Rating systems (e.g. Dow Jones Sustainability Index)
