RAISING EDUCATIONAL ASPIRATIONS

We aim to raise educational aspirations through working with primary school pupils and secondary school students right through to adult learning within Tower Hamlets and Hackney ndash two of the most deprived boroughs in the UK

Volunteers have forged ongoing relationships through lunchtime clubs and mentoring as well as helping to develop skills in one-off workshops In support of our primary school volunteering programme the SG UK Group Charitable Trust provided donations to our three partner schools to enable swimming lessons horse riding lessons theatre visits and a school trip to Paris

LITERACY LUNCHES16 volunteers helped local women in Tower Hamlets develop their English language skills every week enabling them to improve their communication build confidence and ultimately advance towards employment The Literacy Lunch programme is delivered through City Gatewayrsquos Womenrsquos Project which received funding of euro25000 from SGrsquos Global Foundation in 2014

SCHOOL VOLUNTEERINGOver 70 employees volunteered over their lunch break in 2014 to run clubs with primary pupils at our three partner schools in East London Volunteers gave their time and skills to teach Chess Computers Debating French Lego Maths Music Netball Reading and Spanish clubs helping to raise aspirations as well as being positive role models to their pupils

IMPROVING EMPLOYABILITY PROSPECTS

We aim to improve employability prospects through working with secondary school pupils undergraduate and postgraduate students in addition to supporting young people in vocational and non-vocational paths

Volunteers provided remote and hands on support to improve CVs developed interview techniques discussed career paths acted as mentors and supported work placements for young people from a diverse range of backgrounds across East London As a result of a new mentoring programme for 2014 one undergraduate mentee gained a full time position with SG Hambros Another young person gained a 12 month apprenticeship with SG whilst studying for a Business Admin qualification

CITY BROKERAGE TRAINEES15 young people from inner city London boroughs were placed in 12 departments across the SG UK Group for an eight week long tailored programme Run in conjunction with the City of London the Business Traineeship initiative has been a flagship programme for HR and CSR for 9 years In addition to adding value to teams the trainees received 185 hours of employability and workplace training 2014 also saw the return of two previous trainees securing permanent positions

BUILDING STRONGER COMMUNITIES

We aim to build stronger communities through providing highly skilled volunteers physical support and financial assistance to strengthen both the efficiency and operations of community organisations

Volunteers have gone above and beyond to support organisations on our doorstep by giving their individual skills Employees have created and improved websites for Hackney charities and helped charities secure grants through funding reviews by SG employees Volunteers also gave their knowledge and expertise through one off lsquoSounding Boardrsquo workshops strategic support and through mentoring and trusteeships with local organisations

HACKNEY GIVINGHackney Giving is an innovative fund set up to support community-based projects for Hackney residents SG joined the unique cross-sector partnership as a founding member in February 2014 Since then a total of pound105038 has been donated to 24 grassroots organisations in the priority areas of Employment amp Training and Wellbeing amp Inclusion Two crowdfunding events were also organised to enable residents local business and philanthropists to jointly donate funds to successful projects

Alzheimerrsquos Society is the leading support and research charity for people with dementia Our two year partnership has funded the lsquoCare for Today Cure for Tomorrowrsquo campaign providing one-to-one care and support as well as pioneering research

Our fundraising has surpassed all expectations smashing our original target of pound500000 and even the stretch target of pound750000 The value of our partnership has now exceeded an incredible pound880000 totalling pound943176 including gift aid and gifts-in-kind

Beyond fundraising employees have gained a better understanding of dementia and how to support those living with the condition This was achieved through Dementia Friends training in Dementia Awareness Month and hands-on volunteering opportunities such as the SG Singers who spent a morning singing with the support group at a local service centre

CSR NETWORKS The CSR team is supported by a network of Champions Ambassadors and Trustees who are fundamental in driving the CSR strategy in the UK In meetings three times per year we discuss updates key events and campaigns Our networks are crucial in helping raise awareness of CSR communicating about CSR to their colleagues and motivating them to get involved

DIVERSITYDuring 2014 CSR continued to work with the UK Diversity Networks on many initiatives and fundraising events pound10820 was raised through events during Diversity Week such as the Staff Quiz hosted this year by Matt Dawson and the new and successful International Food Festival as well as the ever popular Christmas Carol Concert at All Hallows with the SG Singers and Royal Choral Society

The support from the Diversity Networks goes beyond fundraising with all networks playing a crucial role promoting key volunteering programmes and local campaigns For example the Family Network promoting the childrenrsquos clothes and goods campaigns and the Womenrsquos Network endorsing the female literacy programme A big thanks to all of the Networks for their support

PROJECT INDIGOThe LGBT network have been actively involved with CSR taking on their own volunteering initiative this year Members of the network visited Project Indigo in Hackney a support service for young people who identify themselves as LGBT or questioning their sexual or gender identity Volunteers took part in a speed networking session and shared experiences about lsquocoming outrsquo in the workplace Hannah MacKenzie Deputy Chair of SGrsquos LGBT network said ldquoIt was an absolute pleasure to share our experiences as well as learn about all the amazing young peoplerdquo The LGBT network are planning to continue the relationship with Project Indigo through further volunteering

JERSEYThe CSR Champions in Jersey achieved an impressive amount in 2014 raising pound9000 for charity attending the first CSR Champions team challenge in London organising the inaugural beach clearing team challenge in Jersey offices and running food and toy collections This office is an excellent example of CSR networks in action

CARBON REDUCTION Globally SG has proactively sought to reduce its CO2 emissions since 2007 Since achieving carbon neutrality in 2012 it has set its ambitions even higher and developed an innovative programme to limit greenhouse gas emissions through an internal carbon tax In the UK representatives from departments and entities meet through the Carbon Panel to share best practice and discuss projects which provide financial efficiency and environmental savings within the five key streams of Energy Water Business Travel Waste and Paper

SAVING PAPER AND ENERGY A new Canon print contract was introduced in late 2013 to reduce printing decrease costs make printing easier and more secure and ensure better onsite support The refreshed printer fleet is more energy efficient and has reduced paper usage by 20 resulting in an annual saving of circa pound12000 Due to the significant impact achieved this innovative project was recognised globally and has generated interest from SG offices worldwide

RECYCLING IN 2014Recycling rates continue to improve across all offices with improved facilities and signage In SG House the introduction of food separation proved successful reducing general waste by 50 and increased recycling rates by 10 to 83 Additionally the promotion of the take-home coffee grounds re-usable mugs and lunch bags has helped to reduce waste

ENVIRONMENTAL EFFICIENCY

On World Environment Day June 5th 2014 SG launched the awards programme funded through the internal carbon tax Initiatives submitted must decrease environmental impact and improve efficiency in Real Estate IT Transport or Paper In 2014 35 initiatives were awarded with a total amount of euro32 M resulting in an annual reduction of 07 of the Group emissions and yearly savings of euro14 M The UK Canon Print initiative was successful in the lsquoPaperrsquo category and was awarded euro105100 a fantastic result

CORPORATE FOUNDATION FOR SOLIDARITY The aim of the SG Foundation is to promote access to employment for those who are or risk being distanced from the labour market particularly among young people In 2013 approximately euro24 million was awarded to 91 projects across 27 host countries

CSR supported City Gateway a key UK community partner on a successful submission to the Foundation resulting in their Womenrsquos Project being awarded euro25000 towards their lsquoLiteracy for Lifersquo programme This aims to equip 80 vulnerable women who are furthest from the labour market with the English language skills and confidence to access local services and advance towards employment

CITIZEN COMMITMENT GAMESOrganised as part of the 150th year anniversary the Citizen Commitment Games was SGrsquos bespoke global sporting and charitable initiative culminating in a finale on Saturday 14th June near Paris The initiative engaged 30 countries raising euro907738 for the Grouprsquos partner charities and mobilising 4500 sportsmen and sportswomen 15017 supporters and 506 volunteers

In the UK the football touch rugby and cycling events were a huge success involving 161 employees and raising pound51483 for Alzheimerrsquos Society and City Gateway The winning teams from each competition attended the finale with the UK Touch Rugby team the Lyxor Blues winning the overall competition

Being active in civil society is one of the five strategic priorities of the Global CSR policy This is best demonstrated by Citizen Commitment which aims to combine team spirit with commitment to the community It achieves this through facilitating employee involvement in community projects dedicated to social integration through education or employment The Citizenship department defines and develops the Grouprsquos strategies on solidarity through the SG Foundation and global campaigns
