Handle System Resolver

Extension (like a plug-in) for web browsers that allows them to talk directly to HS

Recognizes hdl:10.123/456 as a handle, which would then replace http://dx.doi.org/10.123/456

Download, with clickable license, from http://www.handle.net

Supports Netscape (3.0+) and IE (3.0+) for PC and Mac. Unix coming soon.

New Batch Load Process

File upload of no more than 1 Mb, but seems to work best with a max of 5K DOIs

Format of one DOI = one URL– 10.1000/7983473875 http://www.doi.org/news.html

Beta usage provided some feedback - improve error msgs Edits are not atomic (delete then add) SSL constraint - must go through browser Future solutions

Services Against Identifiers

The ‘get’ paradigm– [identifier = hyperlink = click on it = get it]

– resolution system + id allows only one action: return an object

– difficult to group objects, differentiate versions, formats, actions, etc.

The ‘services’ paradigm– allow complex resolution: selection from a group of values

associated with one id

– allows services to be built, e.g., describe, purchase, rights, format, around a single identifier for a given creation
