Spending Time with the Lord in

Eucharistic Adoration

As we continue to embrace stew-ardship in our daily lives, it is

important that we understand our stewardship of time — that is, time spent in prayer as we come to know our Lord more intimately, drawing strength from His abundant grace and mercy. And though there are many ways to do this, time spent in Eucharistic Adoration can impact us in powerful and uplifting ways.

“Time spent in prayer, of course, should always be special,” says Dea-con Jean Plourde. “But when you are in Eucharistic Adoration, you are literally gazing upon Jesus. So it’s a much more profound experience.”

In our faith community, we are blessed with two weekly opportunities for adoration — every Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Queen of Apostles, and every Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Holy Family. Working to ensure that our Eu-charistic Lord is always attended during this special time of prayer and adoration, parishioners are invited to commit to a specific hour. People are also always

nuestras vidas diarias, es importante que entendamos nuestra mayor-domía del tiempo, es decir, el tiempo dedicado a orar al llegar a conocer a nuestro Señor más íntimamente, ob-teniendo fuerza de Su abundante gra-cia y misericordia. Y aunque hay mu-chas maneras de hacer esto, el tiempo dedicado a la Adoración Eucarística puede impactarnos de manera poder-osa y edificante.

“El tiempo dedicado a la oración, por supuesto, siempre debe ser es-pecial,” dice el diácono Jean Plourde. “Pero cuando estás en la Adoración Eucarística, estás literalmente miran-do a Jesús. Así que es una experiencia mucho más profunda.”

The Health Care Ministry

Throughout the Gospels, Christ is calling us to care. This call of compassion and service has

compelled parishioner Monica Sciortino to become involved in an important way.

“I thank God every Sunday at Mass for every-thing He’s given me and ask Him what should I do with this gift, and this is the answer,” Monica says.

In Monica’s case, “this” is our parish Health Care Ministry. After spending nearly two decades teaching nursing, Monica chooses to use her gifts to serve in this ministry, which began 16 years ago as Parish Nursing. While the name has changed, the heart of this outreach remains the same.

There are a number of ways that the Health Care Ministry serves the community — from blood drives which take place several times a year, to co-lon cancer screenings, which take place in March, at all three parish sites. At Our Lady of Carter Lake, flu shots are offered each fall, as well as a blood pressure clinic, which takes place on the last Sunday of every month. Tai Chi classes are offered on Wednesday and Friday afternoons at Queen of Apostles, resuming after a winter break on Feb. 1.

The Health Care Ministry also coordinates the Prayer Shawl Ministry, maintaining the medical supply loan closet, maintaining the parish AEDs, coordinating a small food pantry, health education programs, and more.

“All services are free of charge and the nurses that volunteer are not paid,” Monica says. “God has given me these gifts and this is what these gifts should be used for. St. Teresa of Calcutta says that you don’t have to do big things, just do small things with love.”

de SaludA lo largo de los Evangelios, Cristo nos está lla-

mando a cuidar. Esta llamada de compasión y servicio ha obligado a la parroquiana Monica Sci-ortino a involucrarse de una manera importante.

“Le agradezco a Dios todos los domingos en la misa por todo lo que me ha dado y le pregunto qué debo hacer con este regalo, y esta es la respuesta,” dice Mónica.

En el caso de Mónica, “esto” es el Ministerio de Salud de nuestra parroquia. Después de pasar casi dos décadas enseñando enfermería, Mónica decide usar sus dones para servir en este ministerio, que comenzó hace 16 años como Enfermería Parroqui-al. Si bien el nombre ha cambiado, el corazón de este alcance sigue siendo el mismo.

Hay varias formas en que el Ministerio de At-ención de la Salud sirve a la comunidad, desde campañas de donación de sangre que se realizan varias veces al año, hasta exámenes de detección de cáncer de colon, que se realizan en marzo, en los tres sitios de la parroquia. En Nuestra Se-ñora de Carter Lake, se ofrecen vacunas contra la gripe cada otoño, así como una clínica de pre-sión arterial, que se realiza el último domingo de cada mes. Las clases de Tai Chi se ofrecen los miércoles y viernes por la tarde en Reina de los Apóstoles, y se reanudan después de un receso de invierno el 1 de febrero.

El Ministerio de Atención Médica también coor-dina el Ministerio de Manto de Oración, mantiene el armario de préstamos para suministros médi-cos, mantiene los AED de la parroquia, coordina una pequeña despensa de alimentos, programas de educación para la salud y más.

“Todos los servicios son gratuitos y las enfer-meras que trabajan como voluntarios no reciben pago,” dice Monica. “Dios me ha dado estos dones y para esto se deben usar estos dones. Santa Tere-sa de Calcuta dice que no tienes que hacer grandes cosas, solo haz pequeñas cosas con amor.”

Faithfully Embracing Our New Year’s

Resolutions

As we arrive at the New Year, it is customary that we make

resolutions, which hopefully will be carried out during the course of the year. So, I would like to offer this list of possible spiri-tual resolutions. While it might seem difficult to undertake all of these, hopefully anyone can try several of these resolu-tions at one time or a number of them throughout the year. • Attend Mass once a week over and above weekend

liturgies.• Spend an hour (or any amount of time) in Adora-

tion of the Blessed Sacrament once a week.• Pray the Liturgy of the Hours (the Divine Office) at

least once a day. • Read and meditate on a chapter of Scripture a day.• Take up a devotion of the Church (e.g. Rosary, sta-

tions, novena, other prayers, etc.) and pray it daily.• Read a spiritual book once a month.• Make a morning offering as you begin your day,

then an examination of conscience as you end your day.

• Offer a prayer of blessing/thanksgiving before/af-ter a meal.

• Take time to pray daily with your spouse/family. • As an individual or a family, take time once a week

to do some form of charitable work — visiting those who are homebound or in a nursing home, do some work for an elderly friend or neighbor, bring food to someone in need, etc.

Hopefully, this list gives you an idea that the small things done with great love can make a world of difference — both in your life and the lives of others. Try building up to these resolutions on a regular basis and see what a blessing they are for you and others.

que se lleven a cabo durante el transcurso del año. Por lo tanto, me gustaría ofrecer esta lista de posibles resoluciones espirituales. Si bien puede parecer difícil emprender todo esto, es de espe-rar que cualquiera pueda probar varias de estas resoluciones a la vez o varias a lo largo del año.

• Asistir a misa una vez a la semana, además de las liturgias de fin de semana.• Pase una hora (o cualquier cantidad de tiempo) en Adoración del Santísimo Sacramen-to una vez por semana.

• Rezar la Liturgia de las Horas (la Oficina Divi-na) al menos una vez al día.

• Leer y meditar en un capítulo de las Escrituras al día.

• Tome una devoción de la Iglesia (por ejemplo, un rosario, estaciones, novena, otras oracio-nes, etc.) y ore todos los días.

Basic Questions About Our Stewardship Renewal

What is a Stewardship Renewal?This isn’t a parish fundraiser — far from it. Our annual Stewardship Renewal is the

time when we ask each other to re-prioritize the way we use God’s gifts in the Church. It is the time we write down how we will support our Corpus Christi faith community.

Why should I fill out a commitment card?Your Commitment Card allows you to make commitments to prayer, parish minis-

tries, and offertory giving, or what we at Corpus Christi call “time, talent, and trea-sure.” There’s a two-fold reason to complete your card. First, it is an excellent oppor-tunity to move forward spiritually and personally. Second, when you fill out a card, our parish is much better able to manage our many volunteers and make budgeting decisions.

How many parish ministries are there at Corpus Christi?“Ministry” is a general term for any parish group, organization, or regular activ-

ity. There are dozens of ministries in our parish. You can sign up for certain minis-tries, or re-commit yourself if you’re already involved.

What if I sign up for a ministry, but later find I’m not very interested?You are not making a solemn promise to participate in a particular ministry

when you mark it on your commitment card. If you find that the parish group is different than you thought, or simply that their meeting time doesn’t fit your schedule, you can change your mind. There are plenty of other ministries to con-sider.

I’m hesitant to make a firm financial pledge. What if I lose my job?Your commitment card isn’t a legal contract. If your circum-

stances change, your gift will change. So if you lose your job, you may be unable to give at the level you pledged. Likewise, if you get a promotion, you may be able to give more. That is why at Corpus Christi, our standard of giving is based upon a percent-age of income.

Preguntas Básicas Sobre Nuestra Renovación de la Mayordomía

¿Qué es una Renovación de la Mayordomía? Esto no es una recaudación de fondos parroquial, ni

mucho menos. Nuestra Renovación de Mayordomía Anual es el momento en que nos pedimos unos a otros que volvamos a priorizar la manera en que usamos los dones de Dios en la Iglesia. Es el momento en que escribimos cómo apoyaremos a nuestra comunidad de fe de Corpus Christi. ¿Por qué debo llenar una tarjeta de compromiso?

Su tarjeta de compromiso le permite comprometerse con la oración, los ministerios parroquiales y las ofrendas, o lo que en Corpus Christi llamamos “tiempo, talento y tesoro”. Hay dos razones para completar su tarjeta. Primero, es una excelente oportunidad para avanzar espiritual y personal-mente. Segundo, cuando llenas una tarjeta, nuestra parroquia es mucho más capaz de administrar a nuestros muchos volun-tarios y tomar decisiones presupuestarias.

¿Cuántos ministerios parroquiales hay en Corpus Christi?“Ministerio” es un término general para cualquier grupo parro-

quial, organización o actividad regular. Hay docenas de ministerios en nuestra parroquia. Puedes registrarte en ciertos ministerios o volver a comprometerte si ya estás involucrado. ¿Qué sucede si me inscribo en un ministerio pero luego descubro que no estoy muy interesado?

No está haciendo una promesa solemne de participar en un min-isterio en particular cuando lo marca en su tarjeta de compromiso. Si encuentra que el grupo parroquial es diferente de lo que pensaba, o simplemente que la hora de su reunión no se ajusta a su horario, puede cambiar de opinión. to Praise Christ in the Eucharist

Music brings us into an intimate experi-ence of Christ, and with Ablaze Wor-

ship, we can praise Him while deepening our Eucharist-centered prayer lives.

“You come away with a renewed feeling of God’s love for you and your love for God!” says Sue DeVetter. “The music and atmo-sphere help bring us to prayer and move our hearts to feel a closeness to God.”

Ablaze is usually held once a month at parishes in the Omaha metro area, and on Dec. 12, the parish hosted Ablaze at Queen of Apostles Church from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

“It is a prayer experience for everyone,” Sue says. “It is a way to appreciate the Holy Spirit as a Person of the Trinity who can lead us to greater understanding of God the Father’s love.”

People may praise God in any way, in-cluding standing, sitting, kneeling, danc-ing or approaching the altar in prayer, and children don’t have to remain still.

“The surroundings include low light and candles to help us focus on our Lord rather than on our neighbor,” Sue says. “Jesus will be in the monstrance so that we may adore Him.”

mas, podemos alabarle mientras profundiza-mos nuestras vidas de oración centradas en la Eucaristía.

“¡Te vas con un sentimiento renovado del amor de Dios por ti y tu amor por Dios!” Dice Sue DeVetter. “La música y el ambiente nos ayudan a orar y a mover nuestros corazones para sentirnos cerca de Dios.”

Ablaze generalmente se lleva a cabo una vez al mes en las parroquias del área metropolitana de Omaha, y el 12 de diciembre la parroquia acogió a Ablaze en la Iglesia de la Reina de los Apóstoles de 6:30 p.m. hasta las 8:30 p.m.
