Saint of the Week Saint Mary Magdalene
On July 22nd, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Mary
Magdalene. Mary Magdalene appears several times in the
gospels as one of Jesus’ closest followers. At each stage we
find her in the same place: sitting at Jesus’ feet, receiving
His tender love and mercy. When Mary first encounters
Jesus, she is living in sin. Moved by His compassion she
falls at His feet (interrupting a dinner) and bathes His feet
with tears of remorse. Later we find her quietly sitting at
Jesus’ feet, basking in His love while her sister Martha
busily prepares the meal. And at the end, when Jesus is
crucified and all the other disciples have fled, she is still
there, sitting at His feet at the foot of the cross as Christ’s
mercy is poured out in the shedding of His blood. Mary
Magdalene, pray for us, that we may throw ourselves at His
feet on the cross and humbly receive His love and mercy.
Sunday Readings & Reflections Readings for Sunday, July 16, 2017 Seeds of faith
Reading I Isaiah 55:10-11 (triumph of God’s word)
Reading II Romans 8:18-23 (destiny of glory)
Gospel Matthew 13:1-23 (parable of the seed)
Key Passage: Jesus said, “Other seeds fell among thorns,
and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell
on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold,
some sixty, some thirty.” (Matthew 13:7-8)
Adult: How to you provide “good soil” for the faith of
others to grow?
Youth: What are you doing to help the seeds of your faith
grow each day?
Prayer of the Week
Prayer for Summer Sensations
Creator God,
As summer blossoms, awaken me to its beauty.
Give me time to revel in its warmth and color.
Keep us from overextending ourselves.
In the process, help us to rediscover the simple pleasures
that make summer such a delight.
One of these is the invitation to take life easy,
and to play with abandon.
Be for us the breeze of levity and grace
that carries us into summer's lazy days. Amen.
The Anamnesis
Anamnesis is a word that does not translate well into English. We say remembrance or remembering, but the meaning goes
beyond that. It means remembering that which has happened in the past, but which is effective and real in our lives in the
present. “Calling to mind the death your Son endured for our salvation, his glorious resurrection and ascension into
heaven…” We remember, and we celebrate the present reality.
The Offering We used to call the part of the Mass where we contributed our money the offertory of the Mass. Along with that, it seems
that when the presider placed the bread and wine on the altar, it was being offered. As we noted, this part of the Mass has
been renamed the “preparation of the altar and the gifts,” and the “presentation of the gifts.” As yet, there is nothing to
offer. What we have done is to unite ourselves with the gifts that will become the perfect offering. So, NOW, after the
bread and wine has become transformed into the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus, we offer this Blessed Sacrament, and
with it all that we are and have, which are now made worthy through the Lord Jesus. The presider says, “ we offer you in
thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice.” This is the true offering of the Mass.
Intercessions within the Eucharistic Prayer
Following the offering, we make intercession. We pray for ourselves, that “we may be filled with his Holy Spirit, and
become one body, one spirit in Christ.” We pray for the world, for the Pope, bishops and clergy, and for those who have
died. Having offered the one, holy, and effective sacrifice, we pray in Christ’s name for our needs and for those of the
world.
The Doxology The Eucharistic Prayer is concluded by the doxology, “through him, with him, in him,” acknowledging that all is centered in
Christ Jesus. “In the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father,” reminds us that we believe in a
God that is a Trinity of persons, each involved in our salvation. All receive our praise and thanksgiving. Copyright © 2008 Resource Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.

We are already in the summer month of
July and if you are like some of us,
you're just beginning to tackle some
summer projects. Please remember that St.
John school will be holding their annual summer lawn sale
from 7AM-2PM on July 22 at Linda Cresci's home at 142
Water St. in Waterville.
We are still in need of donations. We would like to make
this our biggest sale yet! If you need
someone to pick up your items please

Pilgrimmage to Tomb of Fr. Sebastian Rale
Seminarian Joe will be leading a pilgrimage to the tomb of
Fr. Sebastian Rale in Norridgewock on Sat., Aug. 5. Meet
at St. Sebastian Church in Madison at 12:00NOON. The
pilgrimage will end at approximately 3:00PM
Fr. Rale was a Jesuit missionary in Maine in the early
1700s. For thirty years he cared for the souls of the
Abenakis in a mission along the Kennebec until, caught in
the crossfires of the French and Indian Wars, Fr. Rale was
shot to death and his church burned to the ground by British
troops. Come, take this opportunity to draw closer to Christ
and delve into the inspiring story of one of the early
missionaries of Maine.
Prayer, Pizza, and Priests!
We're pulling together a group of young men this summer
who might be considering the priesthood. The idea is pretty
simple: to get together in Waterville on Saturday nights, eat
pizza, pray, talk a little about discernment and hang out
with other guys who share the same faith. Meetings will be
held on July 29th, and August 12th at 7:00PM in the hall at
Notre Dame Church. Open to anyone high school age and
above who is open to considering God’s call to the
priesthood. FMI contact Joe Moreshead (the seminarian) at
St. John Church & School Video History
A video history of St. John Church and School will be
presented on Mon., July 17 after the 8AM Mass at the St.
John School computer lab. It is a history of both the church
and school from 1926 to the present. Priests who have
served the parish as well as vocations from our community
will be shown. Please use the door next to the grotto to
attend the session.
