Homilía De Hoy

El comienzo del Evangelio de

hoy le hubiera señalado a la

audiencia judía de Mateo que

la enseñanza de Jesús era de

suprema importancia y en

continuidad con la Torá. Jesús

(1) “subió al monte” (como Moisés), (2) “se sentó” (como un maestro que

se disponía a hablar con autoridad) y (3) “comenzó” (textualmente “abrió

su boca:” una rica imagen bíblica asociada con una enseñanza de

inspiración divina) (4) “a enseñarles” (Mateo 5: 1, 2). Aunque cada una de

las bienaventuranzas le hace eco a Isaías o a los salmos, o a una literatura

judía de la sabiduría —y he aquí la continuidad— aquí había algo

radicalmente nuevo. Moisés le transmitió al pueblo lo que había recibido de

Dios, pero Jesús habla con su propia autoridad. Hoy sabemos que Jesús no

sólo enseñó las bienaventuranzas, sino que también las vivió.

Jesús subió al monte cuando vio a la muchedumbre, pero una vez que se

sentó a enseñar, sólo sus discípulos vinieron a escuchar. Por lo tanto, sus

discípulos (nosotros) somos los que Jesús espera que le imitemos en la

forma en que él vivió las bienaventuranzas a fin de convertirnos en

evangelizadores de “la muchedumbre” o, como diría el Papa Francisco, de

las “periferias”.

¿Debería alarmarnos cuán pocos responden al reto de las bienaventuranzas

de Jesús? La primera lectura con su énfasis en la promesa de Dios cumplida

para los humildes y para un puñado de gente pobre, sugiere valor y

esperanza, no desaliento ni desesperación. ¿Debe descorazonarnos que a

nosotros, los que aceptamos la verdad de la Torá de Jesús, se nos haga tan

difícil la vida? La segunda lectura nos recuerda que la gracia de Dios,

operante en nosotros, puede darnos la fuerza para aceptar la sabiduría de

Cristo y ser testigos de ella para los demás.

Pregunta de la semana

Las bienaventuranzas de hoy son la verdadera prueba del discípulo. Las

palabras que escucho hoy en la iglesia, ¿se quedan aquí? ¿Cómo puedo

dejar que la gracia de Dios opere en mí de manera que pueda comenzar a

vivir las bienaventuranzas y ayudar a evangelizar a “la muchedumbre”?

Formation Classes will begin in

January 2018. If you are interested in

inquiring about the Order of Carmelites Discalced Secular you

are invited to visit the community from January to December of

2017. This allows an acquaintance to be made before formation

begins.

The secular ("third" order is a community of lay persons who live

according to the spirit of the Order of Discalced Carmelites, but

who do not leave their secular state of life [that is, they continue

to live fully their family life, and work in the world.] It is a

requirement of the Order to visit the community for a minimum

of three to six months prior to beginning formation. Visitors are

always welcome and visiting the community does not obligate

you in anyway.

We normally meet at St Joseph Catholic Church, 3512 Devine St.

Columbia, SC, the 3rd Sunday of every month from 1:30 pm to

5:00 pm. (Some scheduling changes may be necessary so please

call to confirm the date of the meeting you plan to visit.)

vocation with the Secular Discalced Carmelites, please contact

~Since the year 2009, the Diocese of Charleston supports the Sisters of Bethany, a religious order in Guatemala, through medical missions and Project San Pedro, a children sponsorship program. Project San Pedro allows poor children in rural areas of Guatemala to have access to education. Many parishioners and priests have participated in the missions or sponsor a child in our program.

Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) is a spiritual

renewal process designed to bring members of our

parish together in Christ. CRHP has a clear focus on

the Gospel and emphasizes continued growth in

Christian life through scripture study, prayer, the

sacraments, and fellowship with members of our

Parish community.

The next Women’s retreat weekend will be

Deacon Carl Johnson is a Permanent Deacon at St. Martin de

Porres in Columbia, South Carolina. He was ordained as a

Permanent Deacon in May of 2007. He is very active in St. Martin

de Porres, member of Parish Council and is a Fourth Degree

Knight of St. Peter Claver. He often visits nursing, homes,

hospitals, the sick and shut-ins. Deacon Carl has conducted

revivals in South Carolina and New York. He is also a

motivational speaker.

It is an opportunity to set aside specific time to pray, meditate and reflect, and most importantly, to do this as a parish community. The Columbarium is intended for the inurnment of the

cremated remains of Catholics who are entitled to a

Christian burial according to the rules and disciplines of

the Roman Catholic Church and the regulations of the

Bishop of Charleston, S.C.

Niche cost in the Columbarium, which houses two urns,

is $3500.00. The memorial inscriptions are reserved for

memorializing deceased family members or friends who

may be interred elsewhere. Cost is $1000.oo.
