The Correct Glove for the job

On construction sites we have many tasks including carrying scaffold material, pulling cables, electrical instrumentation work, painting etc. Each and every task holds its own unique risks for hand injuries and that is why it is extremely important to use the correct glove for the job.

Lets take a look at the different types of gloves you are likely to come across on most construction sites…

Knowing what glove to use will be determined by the risk assessment that was conducted for the work you need to do. Make sure that you are aware of the requirements as set out in the risk assessment. And remember…if you are unsure…ASK!!

Welding GlovesWelding gloves are very thick with long cuffs. They are padded on the inside to protect the user against the heat generated by welding and also against sparks or welding flux that would burn through thinner gloves.

PVC GlovesThese gloves are used for tasks where you work with chemicals or flammable liquids. They protect your hand by preventing chemicals coming into contact with your skin. Tasks where you would use PVC gloves include;• Concrete floating• Applying shutter oil to shutters• Painting• Refueling of generators.

Think of any task where you are using chemicals or flammable liquids.

Leather gloves will not protect you because the leather soaks up liquids and this could burn your skin.

The most important piece PPE you will ever own is your mind.

Make the decision today and work safely not only for yourself, but for your family as well.

If you don’t make the decision to work safely, no Risk Assessment, Safe Work Procedure, JSA, Method Statement or Task Instruction will help you.
