Correlation Between Domestic Violence Witnessed by Children and Juvenile Delinquency in Broward County By Gloria Putiak, Senior Planning & Research Manager, Childrens Services Council of Broward County, Fl. Slide 2 www.cscbroward.org CIC 2014 Conference Theme Slide 3 www.cscbroward.org Slide 4 The STORY The child treats the world the way the world treats the child Slide 5 www.cscbroward.org PROBABILITY OF VIOLENCE at age 18 by Protection & Risk at age 15 Herrenkohl et al., 2003 Seattle Social Development Project Risk Factors % Probability of Violence Slide 6 www.cscbroward.org The DATA Broward Sheriffs Office (BSO ) # of Domestic Violence Injunctions witnessed by children by ZIP codes Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (FDJJ) # of Youth by ZIP codes referred for each separate category of : Delinquency (any type) Violent felonies Drug felonies Drug misdemeanors Is there a strong correlation between DV witnessed by children -- and delinquency in Broward County? In the research, risk and protective factors predict a youth will commit violence or become delinquent in the future (e.g. 2-3 years) but we had data for only one year for each variable. We made the assumption that DV and delinquency rates by ZIP relative to the county average rate per ZIP remain fairly steady for the last few years. DV injunctions data witnessed by children includes age from birth to 18 but Delinquency data is for children age 10-18. Slide 21 www.cscbroward.org Potential IMPACT Since nationally representative survey results indicate: Voters are willing to pay taxes for programs that reduce community crime -- this use of community indicator data can inform policies and public opinion.
