The function of microprocessor based control-ler (PID)

The units of the EC, CB, QA, HP, BIO product lines are equipped with the VLM microprocessor controller. The PID control allow fast heating rates without overshoot and ensure precise tempera-ture of the samples. (see graphic on page 7)

Calibration:

Over time it is possible that the temperature displayed on the display shows deviation from the actual temperature of the heating block. This can be resolbved by callibration proce-dure performed by the user. All metal block thermostats have heating blocks equipped with a 4 mm probe hole for callibtration pro-be. An accurate temperature sensor (Pt 100) is available as an accessory.

The controller operates in the following mo-des:

Tempering example of an EC-1V metal block thermostat

The graph shows the accuracy of the microprocessor based controller (example EC-1V thermostat). The PID parameters in the controller are preconfigured in the factory such as to allow rapid heating and low temperature overshoot.

The heating tray reaches the set temperature 100° C after 17 minutes. The heating block is first heated at full power. After a preconfigured period the heating intensity is reduced so that the heating block reaches the set temperature without an overshoot after only 9 minutes.

This excellent performance is advantageous in the situation when a portion of test samples is replaced by new (cold) ones. In this case the thermostat recoveres the set temperature promptly. If re-quired the thermostat can be set to achieve even shorter heating times but in this case a temperature overshoot is inevitable.

QS Thermostats +130°C/+210°C

are cost effective units for a smaller number of samples and drilling depth up to 65 mm. These thermostats are equipped with a pow-erful microprocessor controller. Its high precision, versatile features like ramp function and calibration ensure the superior performance in its price class.

These thermostats can be also equipped with fixed (embedded) heating blocks according to customer specifications. Any custom made heating block can be adapted for any standard thermostat.

EC Thermostats +130°C / +210°C

are designed for daily laboratory tasks. Compared to the HP-thermostat the EC heating trays are mechanically less complex, however the quality of the heating blocks is noit compromised. The casing of these thermostats is made of anodized aluminum profiles which is a cost effective solution.

The EC-thermostats are also equipped with a microprocessor tem-perature controller featuring integrated timer, ramp function and calibration resulting in an exceptional overall performance in this price range.

LS Thermostats +130°C

represent a cost effective alternative to the BIO-thermostats. In spite of their simple design the main component (the massive aluminium heating tray) is cut with high precision tools which allows a good heat transfer.

Also this model is equipped with the microprocessor controller and a wide range of heating blocks which makes LS thermostats an excellent choice in any life science laboratory.

HP Thermostats +130°C/+210°C

are high performance devices with a leak-proof heat tray made of solid aluminum for the usage with interchangeable heating blocks (depth 65 mm). In order to meet the highest possible accuracy the-se Type of termostats can be manufactured with fixed (embedded) heating blocks. Heating blocks may feature standard holes for test tubes but also may feature holes for many other common laborato-ry vessels.

BIO Thermostats +130°C

have been developed for the accurate temperature control of test samples in the biochemical, clinical or molecular biology laborato-ry. These particularly compact devices are equipped with a solid, leak-proof heating tray from an aluminum alloy with high thermal conductivity. They are designed to be used with interchangeable heating blocks (46 mm high). After covering with a polycarbonate plate the devices can be also used as mini-incubators. Similar to HP Type the BIO-thermostats can be equipped with fixed embedded heating blocks having holes for all common laboratory vessels.

HP, BIO and HC thermostats with massive liquid-tight heating tray were developed for the accurate control of test samples in the biochemical, clinical or molecular biology laboratories. The heating tray is made of a special heat-conductive aluminum alloy and features interchangeable heating blocks. These blocks can be covered with a polycarbonate plate which turns them in mini incubators.

HC Thermostats |

HC high performance thermostats for 24 or 48 standard samples (16 mm test tubes) are equipped with the latest Peltier technology. Special electronics protects the Peltier elements from high stress that occurs due to the constant change between heating and coo-ling intervals, for example during tempering at room temperature.

The silicone seal between the solid heating or cooling tray and the cover over the housing prevents the penetration of condensation in the device.

In the 75 mm deep seamless heating (cooling) tray can host the HP and BIO heating blocks for test tubes, Microcentrifuge tubes or Mi-crotiter plates (PCR plates). The heating trays can be covered with polycarbonate covers in order to achieve higher cooling capacities or to prevent the formation of condensation. For longer test tubes are special dust covers available.

The default operating range of these devices is -10°C to +60°C. If required the operating range can be extended from -20°C up to 130°C.

HT Thermostats “High Temperature” 300°C, 400°C, 500°C

The HT series is designed for temperature control in the high temperature range up to + 300°C and + 400°C. For this reason these units are enclosed in a special case featuring extra thermal insulation. HT thermostats are an ideal replacement for oil or sand baths. In comparison to these the temperature control of the HT series is much more responsive, sensitive and accurate.

The high temperature accuracy and stability of test samples is achieved by the high performance JUMO microprocessor based controller. On the other hand, the fixed heating blocks made from a special aluminum alloy with high thermal conductivity enable even and fast heat distribution.

If desired, the HT thermostats can be equipped with advanced controllers which allow conducting time based temperature pro-grams and of course with the RS 232 interface.

To control the HT thermostat according to more complex pro-grams a separate control boxes are available.

Because the material properties of aluminum alloys the metal block thermostats with interchangeable heating blocks can be used only up to +210°C. For this reason the HT thermostats are only available with fixed heating blocks as indicated by the Type designation „F“.

The HT housing are sealed against the heating blocks with an acid and alkali resistant fiberglass seal to prevent liquids from entering the unit. The seal simultaneously prevents the heat transfer from the heating block to the housing. This makes the HT thermostats safe for usage.

For an additional charge to the HT units with a heat and shock protection plate can be equipped. Additional accessories such as protective covers made of polycarbonate are also available.

Furthermore, the stainless steel casing can be either painted or coated with a special fluoropolymer material.

SPA Thermostats -10°C up to + 500°C for pulping processes and material testing

SPA thermostats are designed for specific applica-tions in analytical and material testing. We supply standard equipment to perform certain procedures in accordance with known national or international standards, e.g. for the COD determination in environ-mental analysis. The following examples give an idea of different designs.

All units are equipped with high performance JUMO microprocessor based controllers which ensure high temperature stability over the entire temperature range.

Depending on the task the specific controller will be selected, e.g. with 2 set points or time based tem-perature programs. If required the controller can be equipped with RS 232 interface.

SPA thermostats are also available with separated control boxes in case the remote control is required. In this case the control electronics is protected againts aggressive media or high temperatures.

SPA thermostats or heating blocks can be made for all common Types of laboratory tubes made of glass or metal.

The robust stainless steel housings are painted upon request or coated with Halar ® (ECTFE) in case of very agressive elements.

VLM evaporators are an inexpensive alternative to ro-tary evaporators and concentrators in situations when a larger number of samples must be processed. The evaporation of the solvent is accelerated by gassing with nitrogen, a very gentle method for oxidation of sensitive samples. The metal block thermostats are used to compensate for temperature changes caused by evaporation resulting in a stable system tempera-ture.

The evaporator feature either a motorized lift or a manu-ally adjustable standard, the gas dosing unit and the metal block thermostat QA, EC, LS or VIS. The last one features a very convenient way to replace the heating blocks or samples.

After turning the gas dosing unit of EVA lift 180° the stainless steel needles or Pasteur pipettes (adapter plate required) can be easily inserted from above into the silico-ne mounts. When the version with the standard is used the gas dosing unit can be easily removed and test samples replaced.

As accessories cabinets can be supplied which are con-nected to a laboratory ventilation system. Furthermore it is possible to dose the flow of nitrogen and to switch it off after predefined time.

EVA-VIS for visual control of residuals

VIS EVAPORATOR

The left figure shows the standard version of the VIS device which uses 3 heating blocks for 72 standard test tubes of 16 mm diameter.

So that one can observe the decreasing liquid level in the front block, the heater blocks are provided with longitudinal slots. For better lighting conditions pro-vided by a fluorescent lamp. Under these conditions it is possible to concentrate the samples to a residual volume.

The nitrogen supply for the rear heating blocks can be opened at different times. The largest part of the sol-vent evaporates already because in this phase is not the observation of the liquid level is required.

After removal of the front block located behind the blocks are pulled forward to stop the evaporation in the final phase. Thanks to this time-saving approach al-lows the VLM Evaporator VIS-high sample throughput.

The heating block for standard test tubes, Microcentri-fuge tubes, chromatography vials, and round-shaped flask are available.

The gas dosing unit is divided into three separate chambers and in each of them is nitrogen introduced. By means of the valve screw the flow rate for each of them can be individually adjusted up to 72 samples. Unused outlets stay closed. Instead of the stainless steel tubes the glass Pasteur pipettes can be used after attaching the adapter plate.

The thermostat is equipped with a JUMO microproces-sor based controller which ensures the precise tem-perature control of samples and enables an excellent compensation of evaporative cooling.
