Our Big Red Buccaneer Band has been working to finish learning all the movements of their show.

Now, they must practice to perfect their show, entitled “The Fall of the Titans,” in addition to rehearsing their new pre-game performance. At previous home football games, the band remained in the stands. Now, our Big Red Buccaneer Band marches onto the field to form a large “H” while playing the National Anthem. After the playing of the National Anthem, the football team charges onto the field and weaves through the large “H.”

Another change to the usual football game routine is the playing of the Fight Song after our mighty Bucs score a touchdown. As of this year, our band plays a small portion of “Buc Spirit” after we score a touchdown and the Fight Song after the extra point attempt, whether it is good or not.

When asked about the reasoning behind this new system, Senior Logan Turner said, “The playing of ‘Buc Spirit’ allows the team to concentrate on the extra point attempt while also celebrating the touchdown.”

In addition to contributing hours of practice to the new football game routine, band members spent time practicing for District 8 All-State Auditions and the Plano Drumline Competition, which were both held on September 27th. The following band members made Top Honor Band: Alley Boyce, Isaac Brooks, Sara Burkhalter, Ben Butcher, Caroline Francis, Everett Miller, Austin Ramsey, Rachel Rhodes, Raynelle Shield, Ian Webb, Thomas White, and Tyler Wise. At the Plano Drumline Competition, our drumline placed second in their class, consisting of eleven drumlines. They were also awarded the “Best Tenor Drum Section” accolade. It appears that the hard work

of our Big Red Buccaneer Band has paid off through vigorous competitions.

On Saturday October 18th, the band placed second overall in the Parkway competition and got straight 1’s.

Many girls know the struggle of not having the skin tone of a supermodel. Because

of this, a girl may turn to a tanning bed to get the look that she wants. As most people that have a tanning membership know, the artificial UV radiation that the beds emits is dangerous. For years, the dangers of tanning were posted around the beds in salons and anyone age fourteen to seventeen could tan with parental consent and anyone over eighteen could tan at any time. However, this year many tanning bed users will not be able to bask in man-made ultraviolet light because of a new law passed in many states, including Louisiana. Act 193, passed on August 1st of this year, prohibits the use of tanning equipment by a minor. This has caused an upset in many teenage girls. Some, like senior Emily Simmons, disagree with this law.

She said, “I am seventeen years old. I am old enough to make the decision to put myself at risk for skin cancer if I want.”However, some take a different

standpoint. Sophomore Kaylie Couch said, “I

agree with the law because it protects young girls who do not know the dangers of tanning. I have had skin cancer before, so I know how bad it can get.”

Some agree, but most have the same viewpoint as Sophomore Paige Lowery, who said, “I understand why these laws were created, but I disagree with them because I am pale and want to be tan.”

It may not be what teenage girls want, but Act 193 is protecting young people from dangerous UV rays. If a person is looking to get tan, there is always sunshine or a spray tan to get the job done.19

Congrats theto officers!

Since it was first introduced, senior project has been given a bad reputation. As incoming seniors, students may dread English IV based off of the horrors past seniors have told about senior

project. The general misconception of senior project is that it entails a nightmarish semester filled with tears, sleep exhaustion, and stress. However, seniors will explain to underclassmen, this is untrue. Senior project is much easier than it may seem. The deadlines are reasonable, and none of the requirements are too difficult to accomplish. Senior project is one of the least grueling projects one will ever have to do in high school because the topic is chosen by the student.

Senior Natalie Smith said, “It is definitely a lot easier than I thought it would be. You need to make sure you meet your deadlines, though.”

Senior Tyler Townsend said, “Senior project is the easiest project I have ever done. It’s not hard at all.”

English IV teacher Mrs. Temple said, “Senior project is an opportunity to do something you’ve always wanted to do- something that matters and makes a difference in your community or your life. Enjoy it. Make it worth it.”

Whether it be choosing to hold an event in the community to benefit a good cause or opting to learn a new skill, each senior project is special. By choosing something they are passionate about, students come to actually enjoy senior project. At the end of the semester, most students will say that they are appreciative that they had the opportunity to do something great for themselves or their community.

Destination Imagination by Dakota Digilormo

Destination Imagination is gearing up for another year of creativity! Teams are

beginning to form, and the members are ready to prepare for this year’s State Tournament in March. If a team from Haughton places first in this competition, they will be eligible to attend Global Finals in Knoxville, Tennessee. Haughton will be competing in the following Central Challenges: Improv, Structure, Scientific, and Community Service (also known as Project Outreach).

Sophomore Valerie Bass said, “I’m looking forward to having a new team and getting to know more people to add to our crazy family.”

Destination Imagination has new Team Managers as well. Mrs. Raley will be managing teams alongside

Mrs. Freeman, Mrs. Stallcup, and Mrs. Duncan. Mrs. George will serve as the DI Coordinator for Haughton, ensuring that all of the teams are properly prepared to participate at the State Tournament.

In order to raise money, DI held a Johnny’s Pizza Night earlier last week. Thanks to the support of students and faculty, the night was a success.

Destination Imagination Prepare for Peter by Mason Hooper

Peter Pan is coming to Haughton High School; well the play, that is. The Haughton High School Encore Drama Club has started rehearsals and is prepping for Haughton’s second annual production. With dancing Indians, menacing pirates, and “Lost” British siblings, the play is a clever rewrite of J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan by Haughton’s very own seniors, Dakota Digilormo and Carlea Brown, veterans of the Encore Drama Club.

The story takes place in London, where the Darling children dream of a life of adventure. Their wishes are granted when they are visited by none other than Peter

Pan, played by Dalton Smiley. Natalee Akers, who plays Tinkerbell, shows her distaste for Wendy. She, played by Kaylie Couch, John, played by Logan Turner, and Michael, played by Cole Dredge, are whisked away to Neverland, a place where no one has to grow up or has a mother. In Neverland, they meet Peter Pan’s Lost Boys, played by Courtney Jackson, Stefani Wheeler, Valerie Bass, Daffney Dawson-Hampton, Sarah Ellingwood, and Jordan Digilormo. They venture on only to cross swords with the pirate Captain Hook, played by Mason Hooper, and his dastardly crew, played by Ben Jacob, Mary Claire

Shaw, Rachel Rhodes, and Ashley Smith. The group then goes on to dance with the Indian tribe portrayed by Amber Simmons, Kaleb Ciluffo, and Sydney Lain. There, Michael, John, and Peter meet the Indian Princess, Tiger-Lily, who is played by Chasten Strahan. Be sure to watch the epic battle that ensues and anticipate what happens to Peter and Wendy.

The play will be presented on November 18th and 20th in the Haughton High School Auditorium at 6 P.M. Tickets will be five dollars at the door; all students are welcome to watch the newest performance of the Encore Drama Club.

Lies Do Not Show Loveby Ashley Smith

Everyone knows that people lie for many reasons. It can be to save another’s feelings, to create wonder in a child’s eye, or simply to cover up a mistake that would get the liar or someone else in trouble.

Some people believe it is never acceptable to lie, no matter what the circumstance.

Sophomore Colt Shankle said, “Lying is bad all of the time because

it goes against God.”Some believe it is okay to lie in

extreme situations that could save lives or for things like Christmas, Easter, or the Tooth Fairy. However, one question still remains. Why do people lie when it is NOT necessary?

Junior Sarah Savat said, “It is never okay to lie, but sometimes people lie when they are afraid of

hurting someone’s feelings.”This is very true, but many times

it backfires. Small white lies can turn into a big mess, and the person who got lied to will usually find out later. It may start with good intentions but end in the loss of a friendship.

It is not fair to another person to hide the truth. In a relationship, it is terrible to tell a person things you do not mean or make promises

you will not keep. The person you are telling these things to will believe you and, in the end, get hurt when the turth comes out. People put a lot into relationships, and your lies could hurt them beyond repair. Therefore, unless telling a child a Santa Claus story or protecting someone from physical harm, the truth is always the best way to go.

Junior Logan Nixon said, “Superman so that I could fly into your DMs.”

Sophomore Morgan Johnson said, “Batman because he is dark and mysterious, and I’m goth.”

Senior Logan Turner said, “Iron Man because he is smart, cool, and gets all of the ladies.”

Freshman Hailee Walker said, “Superman so that I could admire my own biceps.”

Junior Hunter Stebbins said, “Human Torch from the Fantastic Four because I want to look fyer!”

Dear Editor,What should I do if I am not

learning in class as well as I should?Jittery Junior,

Nathan McMillianDear Jittery Junior,

Focus. Eliminate distractions, meaning you will need to avoid talking to friends while the lesson is being taught. Dear Editor,

Why is taking the ACT more than once essential for an optimal ACT score?

Studious Senior,Jessica Blank

Dear Studious Senior,By taking the ACT multiple

times, you will get to know the test better. Understanding the format and what types of questions repeatedly pop up on the test will cause you to almost always perform better the next time you take the test. Even if it is not a dramatic increase, simply pushing your score up by a few points can make all the difference. Be sure to study hard for the test, though, so that you can consistently increase your score.Dear Editor,

What are some unique ideas for Halloween costumes?

Spooky Sophomore, Allison Sessions

Dear Spooky Sophomore,Creativity is key. Keep in mind

that a Halloween costume does not necessarily have to be scary. You can dress up as whatever your heart desires. Whatever you do, put your best effort into it. You could go as a penguin. That is a very unique

idea, right?Dear Editor,

I would love to be on the newspaper staff. I look forward to the newspaper coming up with new and creative things which I would love to accomplish! I can cover any (and I mean any) topic you want me to do! I think as a freshman I could be in something awesome other than volleyball!

Functional Freshman,Baylee Good

Dear Functional Freshman, Unfortunately, only juniors

and seniors are eligible to apply. I encourage you to apply in the spring of your sophomore year. Dear Editor,

Why do you serve nasty food to the kids instead of better cooked food?

Feisty Freshman,Bre’ LeBlanc

Dear Feisty Freshman, I am really sorry, but I was

not aware that I served food to children. However, if I do, then I regretfully apologize for serving them nasty food. I will have to work on my cooking skills.Dear Editor,

My Twitter is a little lacking. What’s a great way to get more followers?

Jumpy Junior,Natalee Akers

Dear Jumpy Junior, Well, you could try following

people that you know and, later, people that they know, in hopes that they will follow you back. Read the stories in the Editorials section so that you can craft a deep, insightful Tweet.Dear Editor,

I’ve recently been putting whipped cream in my hair. It turns out that whipped cream is not a good conditioner. I look like Walter White from the hit AMC series Breaking Bad. What can I do to save my hair?

Sad Senior,Quinton Martin

Dear Sad Senior, The best advice I can offer you

is to stop putting whipped cream in your hair. It might attract ants. Also, try purchasing a bottle of actual conditioner instead. The results may amaze you. Dear Editor,

My two best friends are to the point of dating, but it feels awkward to be around them. What should I do?

Socially Awkward Sophomore,ShiDarian Newman

Dear Socially Awkward Sophomore,If the situation is awkward

for you, then try to make it as comfortable as possible. If you still want to hang out with your two friends, then why not try bringing another friend or two along? That will allow you to get to know others better while defusing the awkwardness of being a third wheel.

Symbolism Unmasked

by Lillian Poe

We see masks every day, whether

it be in a physical sense or an abstract sense. A mask, however, is often not only covering a face but also deep symbolism. We are all familiar with masks in film and television, and they almost always have a symbolic meaning.

In the movie The Phantom of the Opera, the phantom Erik wears a mask to cover his scarred face. When people look in the mirror, they often dislike what they see, just as Erik did. They put on a mask to cover what they dislike. The mask is a widely known symbol for hiding what we hate the most about ourselves. A mask is a comfort to

many people; it makes it easier to disguise yourself from hate and judgment. This is the reason the Phantom refused to take the mask off.

Like in The Phantom of the Opera, the media often uses masks to provoke the audience’s thoughts about society. In the popular television show, Pretty Little Liars, A is always shown in some type of mask, symbolizing the secrets and lies surrounding the series.

Like in everyday life, films put masks around characters to portray implications about that character’s life and feelings. What does your mask say about you?

Social Media Confidenceby Destiny McNair

In this day, and because of our age, many teens’ lives revolve around social media apps such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Social media is portrayed as being a great way to connect with friends and family, but many hide behind a façade and do not reveal their true selves. Many people use social media to be mean and to hurt others’ feelings without really thinking about how it is affecting the person they are talking to.

Sophomore Genet Leist said, “It doesn’t hurt to be nice on social media because, now-a-days, people hide behind social media to be mean.”

On social media, many people’s personas are completely different

than what they are in real life. Behind the keys of a phone or computer, people say and do things that you would not expect. Basically, people are hiding themselves behind a mask. Their account picture on their profile might not even be who they truly are. For all we know, as viewers, we could be talking to a celebrity. Secretly, it could just be a silly little ten-year-old playing a prank.

Put down your phone and take off your social media mask! Do not hide behind your phone or computer any longer. Just be yourself.

Taking off the Maskby Madison Farquhar

On a Friday night, when it comes to a choice of laying in your bed with ice cream and Netflix or attending your school’s football game along with hundreds of your peers, which one do you choose? One of the most defining parts of anyone’s personality is how they interact with other people. Some people love being around others and even crave the social interaction of new faces. On the other hand, there are people that get physically sick at the thought of having a conversation with someone they do not know. Many times, these people miss out on many opportunities because they are simply too afraid to break out of their comfort zones and talk to other people. These people often ask, “Is it worth it to break out of my shell and become more social? If it is, is it even possible?”

It is very true that it is difficult to break out of your shell, but, like a lot of things in this world,

difficult is not impossible. So many people have broken through the shell of shyness and ripped off the mask of isolation. The only way to shed the shyness is to do something daring- talk to people.

The bottom line is that we live in an enormous world, and there are billions of people out there going through some of the same things as you. You are not alone in life, and that is a beautiful thing. People are wonderful, and friendship is a gift. Do not be held back by your fears. It is time to go out and meet the wonderfully diverse population of the Earth!

Peeling Away Layersby Mason Hooper

What happens when someone will not break out of their shell alone? Now, we do not need to “Humpty Dumpty” the situation and force them off of the metaphorical cliff of enclosure onto the cold, hard ground of social shame. This is a cautious and slow-paced effort. People first need to try to come out of their shell on their own; they need to feel comfortable around you to accomplish this. Try not to be “pushy” with that person. If they notice that you are trying to break their shell, they probably

will not appreciate it and will avoid you. Be casual: Invite them to eat, catch a movie,

or just hang out. If they

decline, that is a-okay. They will eventually give in, unless they simply do not like you. I personally believe that sometimes people need their space, but there is a difference between needing space and getting lost in orbit. Trust me, it is great to stay at home and binge watch Netflix, but it is better to go out with friends and enjoy others’ company. Humans are social beings; we created and coined society, so it is important that people get a daily dose of social interaction. So, you can help your friends return to the social scene, but be gentle with it. Your friends are onions; it is about time you peel them, just not literally. Sometimes, if you love someone enough, you have to push them to do things that they may not be able to do alone. That is what love is. It is not always beautiful and perfect; it can be challenging and gritty. If you truly love your friend, do what’s best for them; push them to be better.

Welcome Back Walking Dead

Seasonfiveof The Walking Dead crept back up on us October 13th, with a revealing and terrifying season premiere. The questions lingering from seasonfour’sfinalehavefinally(sort of) been answered, and, withit, newconflictshavearisen. This season is promising more issues for our favorite characters, shocking twists, and, of course, vicious and terrifying walkers. The group will face new obstacles and struggles as they encounter newfound survivors who may be a threat. Only time, and Sunday night episodes, will tell what is in store for our favorite zombie apocalypse survivors. Students at Haughton have their own

opinions on what they predict will happen this season.

Freshman Cody Primeaux said, “I have this bad feeling that Daryl will die this season.”

Senior Philip Phavorabout said, “I really think the gang will finallyreachWashingtonD.C.inseasonfive.”If onefindsthemselves

wanting to join in on all of their friends’ Walking Dead conversations and predictions, it is not too late to catch up. All previous four seasons of the showareavailableonNetflix.

It is that time of the year again, where ghouls and goblins come out to be captured on camera. Highly

anticipatedhorrorfilmsarecoming to theaters today, and these ghouls are just waiting to be seen.

Two trembling tales making their debuts today are Ouija and Paranormal Activity 5. Ouija is about a group of friends that must endure horrifying occurrences after attempting to contact their deceased classmate using a recently awakened “spirit board.” After using the Ouija board, the friends are not able to escape the frights that are

attached to it. Paranormal Activity 5 is

a continuation of the well-known Paranormal Activity movie series. This movie involves a young family that lives in a house where strange and frightening happenings are caught on footage.

On October 3rd, a highly anticipated movie named Annabelle came out. Annabelle tells the story of a possessed doll before she was enclosed in her glass case in The Conjuring. This is highly recommended for that scary movie-lover who hates sitting a crowded theatre. Also, Annabelle will be available for rent in RedBox soon. Either way, frighteningflicksareabundant for scary movie-lovers this Halloween.

Highsteppers say

“Go Bucs!!”

Hello, boys and ghouls, today we will spin a tale of mystery and horror. In the times before advanced medical technology, you

know, like checking for a pulse, coffinswerebuiltwithholesinthem, attached to several feet of copper tubing and a bell. The tubing would allow for air to reach victims buried under the pretense that they were dead.

Long ago, in our own hometown of Haughton, Louisiana, the local gravedigger, Thomas Goslin, was working the graveyard shift. One night, when he heard the ringing of a bell, he went to see if it was the usual case of children ringing the bells pretending to be spirits, or just the wind rattling the bell. But this time it was neither. It was much, much worse. Upon arriving at the grave, a voice begged and pleaded to be unburied.

“Are you Sarah Valentine?” Thomas questioned, reading the name from the tombstone. “Yes!”criedthemuffled

voice. “You were born September

18th, 1827?” “Yes!”criedthemuffled

voice once more. “The gravestone here says

you died April 5th, 1858.” “No! I’m alive; there was a

mistake! Please dig me up, I’m so scared.”

“I’m sorry about this, ma’am,” Thomas said, stepping on the bell to silence it and plugging up the copper tube with dirt.

“But it’s August. Whatever you are down there, you sure ain’t alive no more, and you ain’t coming back up.” Angry other worldly screams, loud banging, and scratching issued from below. These became muffledandeventuallysilencedasThomasreturnedtofinishthe rest of his graveyard shift.

Home Alone Sevenby Madison Farquhar

It was a cold Halloween night, and just like all of the other Halloween nights before,

seventeen- year-old Daisy Wheeler was sitting alone in her living room. Daisy had never been a huge trick-or-treater, and her mom was always working at the local hospital. She usually just stayed home and watched Halloweentown a few hundred times while eating her weight in orange Kit-Kats. Spending the night alone never really bothered her before, but there was something very different about this Halloween; it was in the air. Something just felt wrong.

Although she had a bad feeling, she ignored her shivers and continued about her holiday tradition. About halfwaythroughherfirstviewing of the movie, she hears a “KNOCK, KNOCK” at the door. Thinking it is weird because children never usually trick-or-treat on her street, she uneasily trudges

to the front door. She creaks open the door, and lying there is something that sends shivers down her spine: a single black rose lying on the ground. She quickly looks around, and seeing that there was no one there, she slams the door shut and dead bolts it.

Daisy runs inside and calls her mom… thirty-six times with no answer. Daisy is so distraught that she runs and locks herself in the bathroom. Not knowing what to do, she continues to try her mom’s cell, without an answer. Fearing the worst, she begins to cry.

Suddenly, she hears the front door rattle and her heart is beating out of her chest. It slowly creaks open, and she hears footsteps walking down the hall. Stomp, stomp, stomp. She does not even have time to think when the door busts open.

Daisy is so relieved that she could cry. She runs and embraces her mom.

Daisy says, “Oh, mom! It was you that left the rose! You scared me half to death!”

Confused, her mom says, “What rose?”

Ring Night is Nov. 3rd in the

Buc Den 2:45-7:00 Closed Monday

Tuesday-Saturday Sunday 4:30PM-8:30PM 11:00AM-3:00PM

Halloween is next week, but you may not have decided who your alter ego for the night will be. Do not be spooked

by prices of store-bought costumes— instead, go the frugal route with these tips that will leave you with a few extra bucks for half-off Halloween candy.

With the fall weather hopefully coming in full swing, it is time to switch your summer wardrobe for your winter one. Save a faded t-shirt and pair of shorts that are getting too short anyway for a grade A zombie costume. Use a pair of scissors to create rough-

lookingholesintheoutfit.Puta little Halloween make-up on your face, and voilà- you look like you could be on an episode of The Walking Dead. Better yet, grab a buddy to dress up as Rick Grimes.

Decade-themed costumes can also be pretty thrifty. Visit one of the local consignment shops like Goodwill or Salvation Army, or you can go to places like Needful Things and Campus Collectibles. If you are really pinching pennies, you can go looking in grandma or grandpa’s closet for some reallygoodfinds.Butdonot forget that the 90’s were fourteen years ago, so you can pull out an awkwardly-patterned button-up with a pair of inky jeans and channel your inner D.J. Tanner.

At school, everyone dresses in their basic school uniforms. However when Homecoming arrives, personalities really begin to shine. The girl who used to hide in the corner becomes the highlight of the dance with a constant smile on her face; the boy who used to sit by himself at lunch gets down in the middle of the dance circle. As students grow older, the styles of Homecoming change.

As the years pass by, freshmen still want, “the princess” look. They want to feel like “one hundred bucks” and to be treated like royalty.

Freshman Ellie Willcox said, “I want to feel like a princess, with sparkles head to toe.”

Junior Sarah Ryan said, “As a juniorIwantafitteddressbut

to still look appropriate. Not too tight but tight enough.”

Upperclassmen still like glamour but also like to look professional at the same time. Most guys have a common goal, to be different.

Freshmen DJ Monroe said, “Chevron, a boy tie, suspenders, and Converse is how I plan to dress.”

These students are not afraid to be unique in their own way. Whether we would normally be into jeans and a T-shirt or a floral-printdress,Homecomingis our moment to shine. It does not matter if a person is going with a group of friends or with the person of his/her dreams, everyone is dressing to impress. With that said, time to get out your shined shoes and dance the night away.

All We Need is 1% SPORTSby Megan Birdwell

On September 19th, at Harold E. Harlan football stadium, the Bucs dominated the Minden Tide. The game started out with a twenty-four yard rushing touchdown by Josh Lister and the extra point made by Nico Broadway (7-0). Minden answered those points with a touchdown with forty-four seconds remaining in the quarter. Going into the second quarter, the score was tied 7-7. The next score validated Haughton’s running game with a seven- yard rush by Ke’untre Normandin for the touchdown. The extra point was made by Broadway (14-7). The Tide came back at the end of the second quarter with another touchdown (14-14). The Bucs did not want to go into half time with a mere tie. With one second remaining in the first half, Will Haines threw an eight-yard pass to Antonio Woodfork for the touchdown (21-14). At the end of the third quarter, Haines threw a seventy-four yard pass to Normandin for another touchdown to make the score 28-14. Making Minden’s night a little worse, O’Shun Smith intercepted and ran it all the way back for a touchdown (35-14). To wrap up the game, D’Kovin Ware rushed for an eleven-yard touchdown. The game ended with another win by the Bucs. September 27th the Bucs played Ruston in an away game and stole the show. The first score of the night was made by Ruston; it was a thirty-five yard rush into the end zone, but it did not go unanswered. At the end of the first quarter, Haines rushed for fifteen yards for the touchdown. Ruston came back and kicked a thirty-eight yard field goal (7-10). In the middle of the third quarter, Broadway kicked a twenty-eight yard field goal to tie the score at 10-10. TJ Sweeny caused a disruption in Ruston’s plan by getting an interception. The quarterback for the Bearcats continued to have a rough night when he was intercepted, again, by JT Bledsoe. Ruston came back in the fourth quarter with a thirty-nine yard pass for the touchdown (10-17). The Bucs answered those points on the next possession with a thirty-four yard pass from Haines to Lister. The extra point was made by Broadway (17-17). Ruston’s next possession did not go

as planned. Smith got a pick six to make the score 24-17 after Broadway made the extra point. Another score was made by the Bucs when Haines completed a pass to Javonte Woodard for twenty-five yards (31-17). In a last attempt by Ruston to close the gap in the score, the quarterback was intercepted again by Smith. St. Mary’s came to Haughton on October 3rd and left with a loss. The Bucs dominated the game with a win of 34-7. During the first quarter, Ware rushed for an eight-yard touchdown and Normandin rushed for a seven-yard touchdown. Broadway made the first extra point, but the second one was blocked (13-0). Normandin had a great game and scored another touchdown during the second quarter with a fifteen-yard rush to the end zone. Broadway’s extra point was good. The score going into half time was 20-0. After halftime, the Tigers kicked off to the Bucs and Woodfork ran back the kick-return eighty-six yards, then, into the end zone (27-0). With five minutes remaining in the game, St. Mary’s responded to the twenty-seven unanswered points with a touchdown. The Bucs, in return, answered with a pass from Haines to Woodard for a touchdown. To continue Haughton’s winning streak, the boys beat Southwood (28-7). No scores were made until the second quarter when Southwood rushed for a touchdown (0-7). The Bucs answered those points with Haines running into the end zone for a touchdown of his own, to make the score 7-7. Haughton’s defense showed up that night, and as a result, Southwood was unable to score the rest of the game. In the third quarter, Haines passed to Woodfork for a nineteen-yard touchdown. Haines completed another touchdown pass, this time to Lister in the fourth quarter for forty-two yards (21-7). To finish off the game, Normandin rushed for a five-yard touchdown (28-7). Broadway made all of his field goals. At the “Adios Airline” game, our Bucs came out victorious with a win of 28-26. The first two scores of the game were made by Airline. The first extra point was no good, but, after the second touchdown

the Vikings got a two-point conversion to make up for the missed extra point. The Bucs answered those points with a seven-yard rush by Haines and the extra point by Broadway (7-14). Airline did not make it easy for the Bucs when they scored again before the half (7-20). To lessen the deficit, Haines rushed for an eight-yard touchdown. Broadway made the extra point to make the score 14-20 at halftime. The Bucs made a comeback in the second half. At the end of the third quarter, a pass from Haines to Lister, and an extra point by Broadway, would make the score 21-20. The fourth quarter brought a lot of suspense for the Bucs. The next score was made by Haines with a one-yard push into the end zone and another great kick by Broadway to give some breathing room to the Bucs. The Vikings tried to tie up the score and send the game into overtime wtih a touchdown and an attempt at a two-point conversion, but the attempt was in vain. Today, our boys will take on the Captain Shreve Gators in our Homecoming game. Good luck, Bucs!

Heisman Watchby Megan Birdwell

Dak Prescott’s stats speak volumes. He has a 59.7% completion rate, 3,612 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and 1,523 rushing yards on his career. Prescott, no doubt, has amazing career stats, but he also holds the title of “Home Town Hero,” as a 2011 Haughton High School graduate. In addition to every success he has earned, he also has the chance to obtain the 2014 Heisman trophy. From Haughton to Mississippi State, Prescott has never disappointed. Coach Guin said, “It’s a very big deal for our school and community. He deserves it because he has always put the team and winning ahead of personal awards. Dak always showed great leadership skills.” Mr. Couvillion said, “What an honor for our school and community to be represented on a national level by an athlete who is not only a tremendous athlete, but exemplifies great character.” The Heisman may be a very important accolade, but the progress Prescott has made alone is enough to make his hometown proud. Athletes’ physical capabilities get tested every day and their characters get criticized with every exposure to publicity. With every interview, Dak has always represented Haughton in the best way possible.

Coach Brotherton summed up everyone’s admiration for the Home Town Hero and said, “Dak is where he is today because of the kind of person he is. If he wasn’t playing football ,he would be a success at something else. He is just a winner. As an athlete, he also has the unique ability to lift up the players around him and make them better.” Whatever happens, Prescott remains hopeful. In an interview after the Bulldogs’ win against Auburn, he answered how he felt about his Heisman chances. Prescott said, “That’s a dream every little boy who plays this game has, but I’ll think about that when the time comes and the trophy’s given out. Right now I just want to win the next game.” Prescott talks to Coach Guin after the

Auburn game.

Congratulations to Brittney Stone! She has been chosen by Coach Ginn as the October girls sports spotlight. Stone is a runner on the cross country team and has participated in the sport since the beginning of her high school career. When asked about her love for cross country, Stone said, “I love the sport! The great team and coach we have makes it even better! Cross

country allows you to set goals for yourself so that you can improve every meet, and the feeling after you run the fastest three miles you can is awesome!” Stone is a team player and enjoys seeing newcomers improve in the sport. She said, “I encourage everyone to join the team next year! You don’t have to be the best at running; it’s all about working hard and getting better.” Stone is also an active player in other sports: Track, basketball, on which she is a point guard, and volleyball, where she excels as a middle hitter. Extracurricular activities are important to Stone. She is an officer in FCA (Special Events Coordinator) and a member of Chess Club and SADD. Stone is also employed at Subway and volunteers her time at the Koran Baptist Church. Stone does all of this while also maintaining a 3.4 GPA. Coach Ginn said, “Brittney Stone has been at every meet, she has led our female team in two of the races, and she is a great teammate as well as a really hard worker. She plays three sports and excels at all three.”

Congratulations to O’Shun Smith! He has been chosen by Coach Guin as the October boys sport spotlight. Smith is the starting cornerback for our 6-0 Haughton Bucs and has been on the football team since his freshman year. In addition to being on the defensive team, Smith is also on special teams. This season, Smith has stacked up interceptions and touchdwns.

When asked what his philosophy on winning the game is, he said, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” This comes from his favorite Bible verse that stays in his mind while he is playing the game: Philippians 4:13. Football is Smith’s passion, and, when asked what his favorite part of the sport is, he said, “I love to just go out, have fun with my team, and do amazing things. I don’t get tired!” Smith is not only dedicated to football, but he also participates on the track team as well. As a runner, Smith competes in the 400-meter dash. He also maintains a 2.7 GPA in his schoolwork. Smith’s football career did not start in high school. He has been playing as far back as he can remember and started for the seventh and eighth grade middle school teams. He was given the Player of the Week award by Citizen’s National Bank for his performance in the game against Ruston. He practices everyday with his team during fourth block and after school. Smith also did not take time off in the summer; he stayed committed and worked out with his team. Coach Guin said, “He is one of our leaders on defense and has improved greatly from his junior year.”

by Destiny McNair Pass, set, spike it! That’s the way our HHS volleyball team likes it. The team has been cracking down and striving to have a successful season since August 31st, when the season officially began. Their hard work has definitely shown off. The team’s winning streak lasted for four straight games, but ended against Airline on October 6th. At the next game against

Airline, the Bucs came out victorious. After that, the Bucs continued to onward to beat Northwood in just two sets. Overall, Coach Prather said that Emiline Hoskins, Hallie Smith, Brittney Stone, and Megan Birdwell have played great this season. The next and final game of the season will be played against Mansfield on the 28th at home.

Arrows or Ammo?by Ashley SmithDeer season is back. On October 1st, it opened for bow hunters, and on October 18th, it opened for everyone. In the weeks leading up to the opening day, there was a big question running through some hunter’s heads… “What weapon should be used?” There has been a long-standing discrepancy over which is better, a bow and arrow or a firearm. Each hunter has his/her reasons for what he/she uses, but all of the heated arguments can be confusing to one who does not know what he/she wants. Well, there is no more need to struggle with what weapon to use to take down that trophy winning buck. This test will tell what kind of weapon a hunter prefers and why.Would you rather:1. A) Be an accurate shot with ease B) Have to practice your shooting2. A) Be a patient hunter B) Get to hunt a month early 3. A) Shoot a long distance B) Get close to the animal4. A) Kill the animal instantly B) Kill the animal quietly5. A) Be like one of our Founding Fathers B) Be like Robin Hood

Mostly A’s: A person with mostly A’s is most likely to prefer a firearm. Bringing home a deer every time is important to this type of hunter. He/she does not mind waiting a few weeks to start hunting because the hunter knows that every time he/she gets in the stand, whether a deer is 10 yards or 200 yards away, the shot will be made. He/she likes instantly dropping the deer so that it does not suffer. Lastly, this type of hunter likes feeling like the men and women who protect our country. This type of hunter likes having the gun slung over his/her shoulder as he/she walks the lease in the cool, morning breeze.

Mostly B’s:A person with mostly B’s is most likely to prefer a bow and arrow. This hunter focuses more on practiced precision. He/she likes to get started hunting as soon as possible because of the difficulty that comes with getting close enough to get a shot. This hunter likes getting close to nature and feeling more traditional while having stealth. He/she prefers the skill it takes to shoot the bow and enjoys the feeling of drawing back the arrow.

by Madison FarquharKicking to Competition It is October and that means big things for the Highsteppers. On October 26th, the girls will be headed to their very first competition of the year. The Highsteppers are competing in the State Fair of Louisiana dance, cheer, and marching auxiliary competition at the fairgrounds in Shreveport. On top of performing at all home football games and pep rallies, the girls have been working extremely hard to prepare dances for this special Sunday. The Highsteppers will perform three dances. They will enter with a pom dance to “I’m Legit,” and a fun, science-themed novelty dance to “Weird Science” both choreographed by Captain Skylar Weinreber, and a kick dance to a Bon Jovi mix choreographed by Co-Captain Victoria Grillo and Weinreber. The girls are excited to strut their stuff for the judges, and

hope to win big in order to bring home some trophies to make their school proud. Senior Shelby Cooper said, “This is such an awesome opportunity to get out and show the community how hard we have been working!” Sophomore Paige Lowery said, ”This is my first competition as a Highstepper, and I literally cannot wait to shake off the nerves and get out there and rock it!” The Highsteppers have put in the blood, sweat, and tears, and they are ready to show the judges and the community what they have got! This competition is open to the public. Come out to the State Fair of Louisiana on October 26th, and support your Highsteppers!

What would a Friday night football game be like on the field without the roaring chants and cheers of Haughton’s spirit groups? Parents and crickets would fill the stands instead of Peppers and The Crew. Half time would become a boring intermission for fans instead of a chance to see some awesome performances from the Highsteppers and the Big Red Buccaneer Band. The claps of coaches would be the only praise of a great play instead of an uplifting cheer from the cheerleaders. Thankfully, Bucs do not have to worry about this because at Haughton we are never short of spirit. Spirit groups are the loudest voices heard at athletic events, cheering on the Bucs. They lead the school in spreading spirit to get Bucs’ fans pumped up. Sophomore Cheerleader Jenna Blank said, “Without spirit groups, there would be no hype.”

Senior Highstepper Jamie Phillips said, “Spirit groups encourage our teams to win and pump up the crowd.” Freshman Band member Holly Gandy said, “The band is the largest spirit group. They put in a lot of work to perform for the Bucs and their fans.” Senior Crew member Chasten Strahan said, “Losing our voices, sweating in the stands, and freezing at playoffs is only a small price to pay to be a Buc fan, and I would not trade it for the world.” Spirit groups are a valuable and treasured part of the school. Home or away, rain or shine (granted the game is not cancelled), they will always be on the sidelines cheering on their Bucs.

Spirit Savvy by Amanda Simmons Haughton’s Cross Country

team has been practicing since the beginning of this school year to prepare themselves for this season. Cross Country season finally kicked off on September 20th with a meet at Benton. At Benton, the boys finished third overall, with Will Francis, Bayle Rachel, and Kyler Burns having the school’s fastest times. The girls finished fourth overall, with Hannah Logan, Brittney Stone, and Caroline Reggio finishing as the top three for the school. The next week, on September 27th, the team competed at the Byrd Cross Country meet. This time, the top five runners for the boys were Francis, Burns, Hunter Allen, Mason Jinks, and Rachel. The top five runners for the girls were Stone, Reggio, Stormy Manshack, Kylee Jackson, and Robby Anweiler. Francis was able to set a new personal record at the Byrd meet. Then, on October 4th, our Cross Country team traveled

to the Cedar Creek meet. The top five finishers for the boys were Francis, Burns, Allen, Jinks, and Elliot Byrd. The top five finishers for the girls were Britnee Roldan, Stone, Reggio, Bridget Morris, and Manshack. At this meet, Burns set a personal record. Cross Country is still preparing for upcoming meets, including the Northwestern State Meet tomorrow.
