Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS & The Brain gives new meaning to the term “real science.” Making its Columbus debut at COSI this fall, this world-renowned

exhibit features more than 200 eye-opening, authentic human specimens. The donated specimens are preserved through “plastination” which enables bones,

ligaments, muscles, organs, circulatory and nervous systems, veins and other body parts to be shown in incredible detail. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime look at

the mysterious world under your skin.

The exhibition invites profound reflection on the power, beauty, resilience and fragility of the human body and brain. But what’s most compelling is seeing first

hand how our lifestyle choices can dramatically affect our body and brain. Peering into lungs blackened by years of smoking or viewing a liver shrunken by alcohol

abuse can be a life-changing experience for visitors of every age.

This unique presentation of BODY WORLDS is unlike any other and presents the brain as the centerpiece of this new experience, focusing on brain development

and function, how to keep the brain healthy, and how the brain deteriorates from disease such as Alzheimer’s disease. Don’t miss the fascinating

MRI of brain development from childhood to adulthood.

COSI is thrilled to offer this thought-provoking exhibit as part of one of our strategic areas of focus; Health and Medicine. BODY WORLDS & The

Brain encourages contemplation, study and reflection about the human

body and the brain.

What is dementia?According to the Alzheimer’s Association® dementia is simply a general term for decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Dementia often affects memory, communication and language, ability to focus and pay attention, reasoning and judgment and even visual perception. Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia and more than 5.4 million Americans are living with the disease today.

What can I do to minimize my risk? Oftentimes we encourage kids to play with puzzles to keep their minds stimulated and their hands busy. But you can benefit from puzzles too. In fact, there are a lot of activities you can do that require high levels of concentration and may minimize your risk for dementia. Doing puzzles like crosswords, Sudoku and Scrabble, playing board games, reading, playing a musical instrument, and dancing are all examples of these types of activities. You can also start a journal and listen to classical music

while you write in it—two activities at once. Is there a class you’ve always wanted to take or a new skill you want to learn? Do it. It can help keep your brain healthy.

It is also important to remain socially active and eat a brain healthy diet. Anything that can help your heart may also help your brain: low-fat, low-cholesterol foods are best. Foods with high antioxidant levels such as kale, spinach, red bell peppers, strawberries and raspberries, cold water fish and almonds are all great choices. Remaining physically active can also keep the brain healthy.

Living a long, healthy life doesn’t have to be left to chance. Just a few simple brain activities a day truly may help keep the doctor away.

Many of us try to keep our bodies young, but we often forget our most complex and important organ: the brain. Your brain is your command center. It helps you see, touch, hear, taste and smell. It tells you if candy is sweet or tart and if milk is sour. It tells you if you’re happy, sad, tired or energetic. Exercising your brain can help keep it sharp for years to come. In fact, doing regular activities that require high levels of concentration can help minimize your risk for dementia.

LEGO® bricks are fun for all ages! In this exhibit, you’ll find detailed replicas of European castles, life-sized dragons and knights, a catapult you can use against a simulated castle wall and jousting just like in medieval times.

For toddlers you can find large soft blocks for preschoolers LEGO® Duplo® bricks and for bigger kids thousands of LEGO bricks for them to become Master Builders. The best part? We clean up the mess!

Q: What is your background with LEGO bricks?

A: My obsession with LEGO Systems started at age nine. The castle itself I started to build for myself my 8th grade summer. I told myself I

wanted to do something great before I went to high school. As a birthday present my father got me my first subscription to LEGO® BrickMasters and the next thing I knew there was a Castle contest. So the castle I decided to build for myself turned into the award-winning castle that was recreated by LEGO designer Mark Roe. I couldn’t have been happier.

Q: What was your experience like with LEGO Castle Adventure?

A: It changed my life because it made me realize that hard work and determination, and a little luck, can make dreams come true. The LEGO contest was my third contest I entered before I won, third time’s the charm.

Q: Anything you would like to share with kids interested in LEGO bricks?

A: To all kids who love LEGO bricks, keep building and if you truly want to become a LEGO Master Builder, the secret isn’t how many LEGO bricks you can buy and own, it’s how much you enjoy playing with them, your imagination, and to pursue a career in 3D design. The LEGO builders I met, some had never even heard of LEGO bricks before they became Master Builders, but quickly fell in love with them and could visualize 3D design in their mind and make it reality with LEGO bricks.

Adam Hansen was just 13 years old when he built a castle out of LEGO bricks that would win a spot in the LEGO® Castle Adventure exhibit! A Stow, Ohio native, Adam is about to start college at Virginia Military Institute this fall. We got to ask him a few questions about his experience before he packed up for school.

little kidspace® is one of our member favorites here at COSI, but there’s always room for improvement. That’s why you’ll see some changes that we think you will love! We are renovating little kidspace to refresh, update, and improve the entryway experience. By doing this, we hope to improve the functionality of the way our little kidspace guests enter and exit.

We are also improving the Hang-Out Room—now called Big Kid Lab. We’re increasing the capacity of the room, creating a line of sight between little kidspace and Big Kid Lab, and making caregivers more comfortable leaving older children by providing lots of opportunities for fun and learning. Look for a new science activity area with counter space and stools that let older kids perform science experiments, a touch table with cool technology, and plenty of cozy space for games and reading.

The age guidelines for little kidspace will remain the same. little kidspace is for children in kindergarten or younger. Children first grade to age 11 will be asked to use the Big Kid Lab. little kidspace has been specially designed and is staffed by early childhood education experts. Studies have shown that young, developing minds think differently than older minds, making it very important to give them opportunities to explore without the fear of competition from older, stronger children. little kidspace is a great way to nurture their learning while engaging their older siblings in a more exciting and age-appropriate environment.

Calendar2012 Fall /

This October COSI will host ASTC 2012, the annual conference of the Association of Science-Technology Centers. Hosting ASTC is a tremendous honor for COSI. In the museum world, we’re considered one of the best! Not only are we the #1 Science Center in the Country for Families as designated by Parents Magazine, but we also take top honors in our industry for starting the COSI On Wheels and Camp-In programs that have been replicated by other science centers around the world.

We have already transformed the former Space exhibit area and painted fun murals outside Gadgets and Adventure. We are also adding limited-engagement wall exhibitions including Jelly Belly Masterpieces of Jelly Bean Art, Whales: From the Depths of the National Geographic Collection, and a beautiful art installation called Michelle Stitzlein’s Moth Series.

Be sure to check out all these changes when you visit COSI this fall, and if you’re planning to host a party of your own, skip the home improvement and host it at COSI! We are Columbus’ most unique event venue for everything from kid’s birthday parties to weddings.

Use pipe cleaners to build your own neuron. Nerve cells, or neurons, are specialized to carry “messages” throughout your body with electrochemical signals. The human brain has approximately 100 billion neurons!

Everyone needs a little sprucing up sometimes, and there’s no better time for COSI than during our annual September closure. As you read this, we’re working hard to make sure COSI looks its very best not only for you, but for museum professionals from science centers around the world.

A little home improvement at COSI

Try this at home...

Sprucing things up for the world—and you!

Build a Neuron!MATERIALS:

• 2 pipe cleaners that are the same color

• 4 pipe cleaners that are different colors

• scissors

1. Take the two pipe cleaners that are the same color and roll them into a ball. This is the cell body. The cell body is the part of a neuron that contains the nucleus.

2. Take a different color pipe cleaner and attach it to the new cell body by pushing it thought the ball so there are two halves sticking out. Take the two halves and twist them together into a single extension. This is the axon. The axon is a long nerve fiber that sends messages away from the cell body.

3. Take a third color pipe cleaner and cut it into four equal pieces. Push each piece through the cell body to make the dendrites. The dendrite ends will stick out. The dendrites are the branching part of the body of a neuron that receive messages from nearby neurons.

4. Wrap the fourth colored pipe cleaner along the axon to make the myelin sheath. Trim any extra. The myelin sheath wraps around certain nerve axons, serving as an electrical insulator that speeds up the message to muscles, glands or organs.

5. Cut the last pipe cleaner in half and wrap one half on the end of the axon to make the synaptic terminal. The synaptic terminal is where chemicals and messages are stored and released.
