Arbutin has antioxidant properties and prevents lipid per-oxidation in the cell membrane. This maintains the rigidity and the integrity of the cell membrane and therefore pre-serves the cell viability during and after physical stress [23]. Arbutin is also used for skin lightening in cosmetics. The molecular mechanism of action is based on the inhibition of melanin synthesis by inhibition of the enzyme tyrosinase [24]. However, the use of arbutin in cosmetics is viewed crit-ically and is not without controversy [25, 26]. We wish to emphasise that the content of arbutin in MYRAMAZE® is not a health concern under the intended conditions of normal use.

Trehalose can strengthen and preserve a wide spectrum of biological molecules. Thus trehalose acts as a kind of natural means of protection against desiccation, oxidation, heating and frost. It is not surprising that trehalose accumulates in ex-actly those organisms which can survive for long periods with-out damage in non-vital state [20–22].

The appearance of the skin depends on the water content. In the outermost layers, this is usually between 10 and 40 %. Adequate water content helps the skin to be even, soft and elastic. However, if water content is too low, it will be scaly, rough and cracked. Sufficient water is important not only for the skin’s appearance but also for a sufficient barrier func-tion: balanced water content makes the penetration of hy-drophobic substances into the skin difficult.

Desiccation threatens not just Myrothamnus flabellifolia, but also the skin: if the ambient air has less water available than the skin itself, the skin will be constantly losing moisture to the environment by evaporation (= transepidermal water loss, TEWL). This causes drying of the skin. Drastic environ-mental conditions such as low temperatures or low humidity in the winter contribute significantly to dehydration. There-fore it is hardly surprising that the stress factor “dry skin” is a widespread problem. However, dry skin is not just an aes-thetic problem; it also provides a good breeding ground for mild irritation, chronic skin diseases or itching.

Figure 2a: The release of Arachidonic acid is one of the first steps in the inflammatory response. Arachidonic acid is released by the enzyme Phospholipase A2 from the cell membrane lipids. An example of a phosphatidyl-choline with Arachidonic acid and of the unsaturated Oleic acid is shown. Arachidonic acid is the starting substance for a vari-ety of inflammatory mediators. The enzyme Phospholipase A2 is also present in some insect poisons, which explains the severe skin reaction after a wasp sting, for example.

Method: Measurement of the quaddle area following bites from the common house Mosquito. Sensitive, hot and itchy skin often is caused by excessive

inflammation which affects skin barrier function and eventually

can lead to accelerated skin ageing (inflamm-ageing) as well as

impaired quality of life.

DEFENSIL®-PLUS is a highly effective first-aid kit to alleviate

DEFENSIL®-PLUS First Aid for Inflamed Skin

In the desert-like environment of South Africa, there lives a res-

ilient resurrection plant, Myrothamnus flabellifolia, which has a

unique adaptation strategy: in spite of its extreme environment,

it can survive long and hot periods of drought in a completely

desiccated state and become green again within a few hours of

the first drops of rain. The resurrection properties of M. flabel-

lifolia are based on physical stabilisation (such as leaf morpho-

logy, cell-wall composition etc.) and metabolic adaptation. As

an example, water loss increases the production of protective

constituents such as galloylquinic acids.

This resurrection effect can also be applied to the skin:

MYRAMAZE®, an extract of Myrothamnus flabellifolia, is like an

oasis for stressed, “desert-like” skin with a particularly high pro-

portion of protective substances. It protects membrane struc-

tures from dehydration and preserves the most important skin

lipid linoleic acid, against oxidation. A one-time application of

MYRAMAZE® invigorates the skin for more than 48 hours. With

regular use, MYRAMAZE® effectively revives, regenerates and

strengthens skin that is stressed, attacked and depleted.
