Columbus Open Studio & Stage (COSS) provides an opportunity for the Columbus creative community to open their studio and stage doors to the public, shining a light on the creative process and practice. The tour deepens and broadens the relationship between artist and appreciator, collector and audience and shares the creative spirit.

COSS is a ticketed self-guided tour of private art studios with scheduled tours of performance stages. Studios will offer finished artwork, works-in-progress and demonstrations. Stage venues will share behind-the-scenes views of productions. Visitors will haveopportunities to speak with artists about their process from idea to completion.

WELCOMEColumbus Open Studio & Stage (COSS) was born out of a desire to reveal to the public the creative process and talent of Columbus-based artists. Artists themselves, the four founders of COSS—Amy Leibrand, Lisa McLymont, Stephanie Rond and Catherine Bell Smith—understood the misperception of artists as solitary creatures who play with mysterious, hidden methods. Having wondered “how did they create that?” the four women recognized the need for a peek behind the scenes to demystify the artistic process and deepen the relationship between creative and appreciator.

With a business plan in hand, the team approached the Greater Columbus Arts Council (Arts Council), which immediately recognized the tour’s value to the community. The Arts Council suggested COSS seek a citywide audience and bring in performance venues and community partners—a concept more expansive and inclusive than what is happening in other cities, making this diversified effort unique to Columbus.

The first COSS tour launched in October of 2016 with 26 visual artists who opened their studios, eight community partners and seven performance venues. In 2017, Columbus Open Studio & Stage expanded to include 50 artist studios at 32 sites, 12 community partners and seven performance venues.

2018 welcomes the third-annual Columbus Open Studio & Stage tour with a few adjustments. At the urging of past COSS tourists, the footprint of the tour is scaling back to its original size. While the goal is not necessarily to make it to ALL the studios, we wanted to at least make it more feasible to do so if you wish.

Another change for the event came when the original founders decided to step down from running the event to take on other creative pursuits. The Arts Council picked up the event and freed from the task of running the event, co-founder Stephanie Rond decided to open her studio and join the tour.

COSS continues its mission to expand the creative audience within the city of Columbus by providing a unique opportunity for the public to interact with artists, observe their process and explore backstage at performance venues. Enjoy the tour!

Tom Katzenmeyer President & CEO, Greater Columbus Arts Council

AS A MUSICIAN, I KNOW THAT OUR INSTRUMENTS MUST BE MORE THAN FINE LOOKING. THEY MUST ENHANCE THE EVENTUAL OWNER’S MUSICAL EXPERIENCE.”

14 SIMON LA BOZETTA

Simon La Bozetta lives in Columbus and works out of his home studio in Olde Towne East. He attended Columbus College of Art & Design and now creates artwork full-time using a wide variety of mediums including oil paint, printmaking, silver point, mixed media, pen & ink, gouache, glassblowing and ceramics.

“ I WORK IN A CUBIST EXPRESSIONIST STYLE. WITH CUBISM, OBJECTS ARE ANALYZED, BROKEN UP AND REASSEMBLED IN ABSTRACT FORM DEPICTING A SUBJECT FROM MULTIPLE VIEWPOINTS. EXPRESSIONISM PRESENTS SUBJECTS FROM JUST ONE PERSPECTIVE, BUT DISTORTS THEM RADICALLY FOR EMOTIONAL EFFECT. I BLEND THE TWO STYLES, ABSTRACTING EMOTIONS AS IF OBJECTS THEMSELVES.”

Particularly interested in the Blues Highway, Langhorst follows the path of American roots music as it moved and evolved through our country. She visually documents some of that story, as it appears in those towns today.

“ I PAINT PEOPLE DOING THE THINGS THAT THEY LOVE, IN CIRCUMSTANCES THAT I LOVE. I TRY TO WEAVE PAINT STROKES TOGETHER TO CREATE INTERESTING STORIES ABOUT BOTH. I’M SHOOTING FOR A TAPESTRY OF SORTS—AN IMAGE FAMILIAR ENOUGH TO IMAGINE BEING ‘REAL’ BUT STILL TRULY FEELS LIKE PIECES OF PAINT.”

“ MY ARTWORK EXPLORES GENDER ROLES AND THE ACCESSIBILITY OF ART. I CHALLENGE THE TRADITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH BOTH INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SPACES. “ I HAVE NO PHILOSOPHIC, SOCIAL OR POLITICAL AGENDA. MY PAINTINGS ARE DONE FOR PURELY AESTHETIC REASON. PART OF MY PROCESS IS TO DESTROY A PAINTING EVEN IF I HAVE SPENT MANY HOURS WORKING ON IT. THE WORK MORPHS INTO AN ABSTRACT PAINTING THAT TAKES ON A LIFE OF ITS OWN.”

“ I BELIEVE AN ARTIST IS SOMEONE WHO DOESN’T BIND THEMSELVES WITH ONE STYLE, OR ADHERE TO THE RULES OF WHAT ART IS. INSTEAD, THEY LOOK AT ANY CREATIVE OPPORTUNITY AS INSPIRATION TO THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX, TO CREATE AND LEARN SOMETHING NEW.”

Growing up, Mindy Staley hid from her talent. Criticism fed her doubt, fear and uncertainty as an artist. After encouraging and inspiring young people through art for more than 15 years, an epiphany came from encouragement from an artist to have “rhino tough” skin. The rhino became her artistic voice.

“ MY WORK REFLECTS THE PLACES I HAVE BEEN AND THE PEOPLE’S LIVES I HAVE ENCOUNTERED. THE IMAGES OF BRIDGES AND RHINOS IN MY WORK SPEAK OF OVERCOMING FEARS, BEING TOUGH AND DEVELOPING POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS, DESPITE PROBLEMS AND DISADVANTAGES.”

“ MY GOAL IS TO GET UNDER THE LAYERS OF PAINT, TO GOUGE, SCRAPE AND DIG WITH BRUSHES, STICKS, ANYTHING THAT SHOWS ME MORE THAN WHAT IS ON THE SURFACE. I MOVE IT AROUND, BEND IT SOME MORE, BREAK AND CHIP AWAY UNTIL SOMETHING SAYS STOP: ‘THIS IS FINISHED.’”

Born in 1982, Kendric Tonn earned a BA in English from Sewanee in 2004. Uncertain about his future, he lived in Japan for a year, traveling, teaching and—most of all—drawing, before deciding on formal artistic training. He studied at Savannah College of Art & Design and the Florence Academy of Art and graduated in 2010.

“ IT IS MY HOPE IN MY PAINTINGS TO PROVIDE A DIRECT CONNECTION BETWEEN HUMAN BEINGS, UNIMPEDED BY THE USUAL EXPECTATIONS AND AGENDAS OF REPRESENTATION. IF I CAN CREATE, EVEN FOR A MOMENT, A FLASH OF RECOGNITION IN THE VIEWER—THE SENSE OF CONNECTING TO ANOTHER HUMAN SPIRIT—I HAVE SUCCEEDED.”

Born and raised in Akron, Ohio, Brian Williams currently lives in Columbus where he works as an artist, graphic designer and college art instructor. Williams graduated from Columbus College of Art & Design in 2003, where he studied illustration, fine art and art history, and where he now teaches drawing.

“ I DESCRIBE MY DRAWINGS AS AESOP’S FABLES FOR THE POST-INDUSTRIAL ERA. DRAMATIC TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES HAVE SEPARATED US FROM NATURE, SO IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER OUR HUMBLE, EARTHLY ORIGINS. HUMANS ARE STILL ANIMALS, AFTER ALL. THE GILDED, SUPERFICIAL TRAPPINGS OF CIVILIZATION MAY TEMPORARILY OBSCURE, BUT CANNOT DENY, THAT FUNDAMENTAL TRUTH.”

33CHARLES WINCE

Charles Wince moved to Columbus from rural Ohio in 1982. Wince, a 61 year old self-taught artist with learning disabilities, has a unique style that has prompted some writers and critics to categorize him as an ”outsider/visionary.” In addition to painting on traditional materials, he has turned his home into a work of art.

“ WHAT MOTIVATES ME? MY LEARNING DISABILITIES—MY BLESSING/MY CURSE. I’M NOT VERY GOOD AT ACHIEVING NORMAL THINGS; HOWEVER, EARLY ON I FOUND I HAD A KNACK WITH CREATING ARTWORK AND SO HAVE STUCK WITH IT FOR MORE THAN 52 YEARS. WITH THIS FOCUS I’VE ACHIEVED A RATHER UNIQUE NARRATIVE STYLE.”
