Why a new COST Action?

In the current status, OWC-related research activities remain rather fragmented and mainly overshadowed by the dominant wireless and optical fields.

OPTICWISE recognizes the great potential of OWC and aims to establish and consolidate OWC as a mainstream technology.

In many respects, OWC research is still in its infancy and calls for extensive collaborative research efforts in distinct, but complementary fields.

OPTICWISE will serve as a high-profile scientific European platformfor synergizing and coordinating OWC interdisciplinary research activities.

OPTICWISE has brought together 70+ researchers and will be the very first COST Action solely dedicated to OWC.

Objectives and Benefits

Make significant contributions to the scientific understanding and technical knowledge of the OWC field;

Develop transformative and far-reaching OWC solutions as powerful alternatives and/or complements to existing technologies, and thereby help increase OWC market penetration;

Serve as an internationally recognized reference point in the OWC field;

Increase awareness of OWC in the scientific community and the general public;

Influence decision makers at national and international levels;

How Networking within the Action Will Yield the Objectives?

Coordination efforts through OPTICWISE will • synergize the interdisciplinary expertise in diverse fields

ranging from atmospheric physics to photonic devices & systems.

• bridge the research efforts between academia and industry,• avoid duplications within OWC research activities,• increase the mobility of OWC researchers in Europe,• provide opportunities for developing and sharing common

software/hardware tools, • enable timely diffusion of generated knowledge within the

research community. • provide training opportunities for graduate students and

ESRs in the OWC field.

Working Groups (WGs)

WG1 (Propagation Modeling and Channel Characterization) will develop, evaluate and validate statistical and empirical channel models for OWC applications and optical bands under consideration.

WG2 (Physical Layer Algorithm Design and Verification) will provide an information-theoretic framework for OWC and investigate practical algorithms and techniques to approach these ultimate performance boundaries.

WG3 (Networking Protocols) will deal with upper layer protocol stacks and investigate co-existence and interoperability of OWC with other communication networks.

WG4 (Advanced Photonic Components) will work on the efficient design, characterization, fabrication and test of state-of-the-art opto-electronic/photonic components and sub-systems for OWC systems.

Page 13: COST Action IC1101 Optical Wireless Communications - …opticwise.uop.gr/attachments/article/38/Presentation by Action... · COST Action IC1101 Optical Wireless Communications - An

Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Based on the needs and technical development trends, SIGs will be

created addressing specific applications and involve members from more than one WG. Examples are • Ultraviolet sensor networks• VLC-based vehicular communications• Underwater optical communication • Mobile OWC

Techno-Economics, Industrial Standards & Future Trends in OWCThis permanent SIG will• Deal with business and market issues related to OWC;• Participate to international standard bodies like ITU, ETSI, FSAN,

WWRF and lead trends in emerging OWC applications;• Educate and influence decision makers at all levels of the OWC

market chain.

Progress Monitoring

Each WG and SIG Chair will submit Semi-Annual Progress Reports.

These will be evaluated by the MC Chair and Vice-Chairs. • In case sufficient progress is not observed, this will be

communicated to the related WG/SIG Chair and proper actions (including the “retirement” of the WG/SIG chair) will be taken if necessary.

MC Chair will prepare Annual Scientific Reports and the Final Report for the overall activities of the Action.

Steering Committee and MC will approve these reports before their submission to the COST Office.

Involvement of ESRs &Gender Balance

Vice-Chair positions in WGs/SIGs will be exclusively allocated for candidates among ESRs.

In the selection process of STSMs, priority will be given to ESRs.

Within the annual workshop of the Action, a best paper award will be set up exclusively targeting ESRs.

In the election process for executive positions, female researchers will be particularly encouraged for nomination.

Travel grants will be allocated for female researchers to attend the annual SPIE Women in Optics networking activity.

Female researchers active in the area of OWC will be endorsed for IEEE, SPIE and other professional awards and recognitions.
