More than 218 kilometres of coast full of beaches with calm

water and soft sand; 2800 hours of sunshine a year, a privileged

climate and a gentle sea have been an excellent way to attract

millions of visitors to our land in the last decades. Years passed

and the development of modern tourist infrastructures and

means of communication have made easier the access to the

richness of the interior parts of our province. This guide is an

invitation, a proposal for approaching our history, our festivi-

ties and celebrations, our gastronomy, our art history and

industrial heritage, our proposal for leisure and sport.

The Costa Blanca scenery is characterised not only by

the sea but also by the mountains peeping at it. The Alicante

Province is the second more mountainous one in Spain; the

Mediterranean landscape is showed here: the terraced cul-

tivated valleys of Arabic origin, the mountainous horizons

covered by oaks, pines, carob trees and perfumed by a

great variety of aromatic plants. In the south of the provin-

ce the mountains disappear, giving place to palm tree fields

and orange and lemon plantations. Mountains and hiking

lovers have very well indicated paths in all the inside areas

of the province.

Beside all that, our territory is full of archaeological sites,

which offer us an idea of the depth of the life and richness

of our environment, inhabited for thousands of years.

Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Arabs left their

imprint here and we can guess their way of life by obser-

ving their remains. On the coast or in the interior you will

find the opportunity of discovering our varied gastronomy

and quality of our wines. You can visit, if you wish, the small

towns hidden behind the mountains or the more modern

and lively ones on the coast, which offer the visitor a very

intensive night life.

Their history and monuments mark the atmosphere of

our towns in the whole province.

We have a lot of marinas and many facilities all along the

coast to enjoy the sea and its possibilities. Golf lovers are sure

to find among us courses with all kinds of facilities. We wish

visitors of all ages to find among us the destination they have

been looking for.

The Costa Blanca has one of its

main attractions in the extension of

its coast, 212 kilometres, and in its

mild climate with an average annual

temperature of 17°C. Together with

these natural conditions our beaches

and its waters suffer a continuous

sanitary environmental control, as it

is proved by the 32 “Blue Flags” our

province has received; flags given by

the European Federation for the

Environmental Education as a prize to

the administrations that care well

after the environment and services.

Beaches

The orographic and geographic characteristics of the Costa Blanca

determine the nature of its coast. The northern part of the pro-

vince, the Marina Alta, is crossed by chains of mountains, which get

into the sea forming steep cliffs of more than 150 metres high. Next

to these cliffs we find caves formed by water currents coming from the

heavy rainfall of the area. Denia, Jávea, Poble Nou de Benitachell or

Benissa have small sheltered coves full of stones and difficult access

by land.

There are 10.637 moorings all along the Costa Blanca in 17 nautical clubs and

11 marinas. Most of these clubs count with nautical schools and technical servi-

ces of maintenance for all kinds of sailing boats. In these waters we celebrate dif-

ferent championships, such as the “Tabarca Ciudad de Alicante Trophy”, valid for

the national championship, or the “Costa Blanca Regatta” for cruises organised by

the Nautical Club of Denia and valid for the regional championship.

the northern part of the province be formed by sharp

crests and large terraced valleys: Vall d’Ebo, Vall de

This orography, together with the climatic conditions, makes the

Costa Blanca one of the most interesting destinations for peo-

ple fond of the interior and adventure tourism. The 99 rural

houses and the 23 youth hostels spread all over this part of

the province allow the organization of many different trips all

throughout the year.

Together with its natural appeal, the interior of

the Costa Blanca shows also cultural appeals, such

as the urban richness of the Arab towns, the indus-

trial archaeology of Alcoy or the Medieval layouts of

towns, such as Monforte del Cid or Biar among

others. Gastronomy, feasts and celebrations,

museums or fairs are other attractions of the Costa

Blanca.

In the interior of the Costa Blanca you can practise

risky activities, such as paragliding, rapple, canoyning,

gliding, bungee jumping or other activities, such as

hiking, riding or flying in a globe. The Costa Blanca

counts with nature parks such as the “Carrascar de la

Font Rotja, La Sierra Mariola, El Peñón de Ifach, El

Marjal Pego-Oliva, El Hondo de Elx-Crevillent, The Lagoons

of La Mata y Torrevieja or the saltworks of Santa Pola;

all of them are well indicated and with tourist signs in

the near by towns. In these parks the visitor can combi-

ne the sightseeing with the activities of hiking and

cycling.

We find settlements in our province from

100.000 years BC: From prehistoric men to

Iberians, Phoenicians, Greeks, Cartha-

ginians, Romans, Arabs and Christians have

influenced our people and left their marks in

this land. The first settlers we have knowled-

ge of belong to the Middle Palaeolithic and

we find rests of this culture in shelters in

Muro de Alcoy, Villena and Alcoy. After the

Neolithic settlement and the contact with the

Phoenicians we reach the Iberian culture,

very well represented in our province in the

archaeological sites of Guardamar, Villena,

Elche and Alicante. The “Damas de Elche and

Cabezó Lucero” belong to this period. The

other great discovery is Villena Treasure,

which is shown in the local museum and is

dated in the Bronze Age. The Roman Ilice is

the centre of this culture in our province. It

was communicated with the rest of the empi-

re by the “Via Augusta” and two branches of

it connected with Lucentum (Alicante) and

Dianium (Denia). As well as in Alcudia and

Lucentum we have Roman remains in El

Campello, Santa Pola, Portus Ilicitanus, Els

Poblets and La Vila Joiosa.

The Arab era is basic to unders-

tand the culture of the Costa

Blanca, because it is the origin of

many of our actual urban structu-

res, as well as of many military, civil

and agricultural engineering. The

layouts of Biar, Cocentaina, Elche,

Monforte del Cid or Villena, among

many other towns belong to this

period. We can contemplate the

military engineering in the magnifi-

cent castles located along the

Vinalopó river from Elche up to

Banyeres de Mariola. The building of

these castles ended in 1609 with

the expulsion of the Muslims, who

left inhabited towns in the mountains

as their last heritage. The first

remains of the Christian world in our

province correspond to the Gothic

art, examples of which are found in

James’s churches in Villena and

Orihuela, Saint Bartholomew’s in

Javea, or Saint Martin’s in Callosa

de Segura.

The Arab Baths in Elche are one of the rare examples of theMuslims in the Costa Blanca

Small chapels of the so called Gothic of the Conquest are found in the towns of

Biar and in the nature park “El Montgó”, between Javea and Denia. Penáguila,

Cocentaina, Benissa or Calpe complete the brief tour of the first Christian art in our

province.

The luxurious and ornamental modernist art has in Alcoy its best examples: the

forge bridges, the factories by the river, the houses of modernist style constitute the

best picture of this industrial town. The maritime facade of Alicante, Magdalene’s

church and the Modernist Museum in Novelda, as well as the casinos in Novelda and

Monovar are some other examples of Modernism.

The museum of the “Festa” is an essentialelement to know the iconography and sym-

bolism of the “Misteri d’Elx”

Nevertheless, the culture of this period is characterised by Baroque, which is

found in Orihuela, at the time religious capital of Alicante province. Five main monu-

ments allow us to go through the history of art from Gothic up to Baroque. We can

find some other points of interest in our province showing us this style: the churches

of Pego and Aspe or the Town hall in Alicante. The fort of Bernia or the layout of

Castell de Guadalest are the military variant of Baroque in the Costa Blanca. Santa

Barbara’s castle deserves a special mention, being one of the most attractive pictu-

res of the Costa Blanca.

Set in the former Provincial Hospital, the Provincial Archaeological

Museum of Alicante – MARQ – is an extraordinary place where to

see the historic and prehistoric richness of the Costa Blanca. Divided into different

rooms to show the prehistoric world, the Iberian one, the Roman culture, the Middle

Ages, the Modern and Contemporary cultures it has the most modern technologies and

interactive panels to show the life of the different periods. Together with this exposition

the MARQ explains in a very pleasant way the process of recovery of the archaeological

sites in land, and under water. A restaurant, rooms multipurpose, a shop and rooms

for investigation complete this recent museum, being the first one of the XXI century.

Festivals are the transgression of

the social normality in the Costa

Blanca. We have a lot of possibilities of

living and participating in these cele-

brations: fancy dresses, gunpowder

noise, music, bulls in the street or in

the sea, fire and fireworks, Medieval

cantatas, processions are some of the

options people from Alicante have to

celebrate life every year.

The Holy Week has an indispensa-ble appointment in Santa Cruz dis-trict of Alicante

Moors and Christians are the most peculiar festival of the Costa Blanca. They repro-

duce the historic wars between the Moors and Christians in the Middle and Modern

Ages. Nowadays, they celebrate Moors and Christians in nearly fifty towns of the Costa

Blanca all throughout the year. The parades of the troupe of Moors and Christians, the

embassies or the fights with blank guns between the two sides are the most attractive

and commonest elements of these peculiar festivals.

The pilgrimage par excellence in the Costa Blanca is the one celebrated in Alicante

each Thursday following the Easter Sunday going to Santa Faz. Thousands of people from

Alicante and province go in pilgrimage to the nearby town of San Juan taking up the main

road and buying from all the stalls placed round the church where Christ’s face image

is kept. Orito, near Monforte del Cid is another point of pilgrimage to celebrate the

festivity of Saint Pascal Bailón.

The Moors and Christians of Alcoy are considered of international tourist interest

The “Misteri d’Elx” constitu-tes an unforgettable expe-rience, set between religio-sity and show business

Another peculiar festive element of the Costa

Blanca, also declared of International Tourist

Interest, is the representation of the “Misteri d’Elx”,

which is a lyric Medieval drama sung on 14 and 15

August by a cast of non-professional masculine sin-

gers. It originates in the Medieval representations

of the divine mysteries inside the temples, which

were left out of them as a result of the Council of

Trent, remaining this one in Elche. This drama, in

two acts, is represented in Santa Maria’s church

and describes the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

into heaven. The set of the drama and the XV cen-

tury cultured Valencian in which it is writ-

ten are other elements giving value

to this cultural representation.

Another peculiar religious celebration is the Holy Week, which has very attrac-

tive elements. Orihuela has a great tradition with its floats built by Salzillo or the curious

image known as “La Diablesa” –devil woman– which is forbidden to enter the Christian

temples. The tradition of the “Caballero Cubierto” –covered knight– and the Holy Burial

on Holy Saturday are high moments of the Holy Week in Orihuela. Crevillente is anot-

her town celebrating the Holy Week with Mariano Benllure carvings and the well-

known choirs singing religious hymns of the XVII and XVIII centuries. In Alicante,

capital of the Costa Blanca, there is a special magic moment, which is the Holy

Wednesday procession in Santa Cruz district in the centre of the city, where

the floats of procession go up and down its steep and narrow streets.

gastronomy

The Costa Blanca has one of its greatest attractions in its gastro-

nomy, a gastronomy based on agricultural and Arabic tradition

that shows its Mediterranean character. As an entrance we

have dried salty fish as tuna or similar fish. Another charac-

teristic entrance consists of different kinds of typical cold

meat. There is also “minxos”, small pizzas made of rata-

touille and spinach.

The wine and the alcoholic drinks of the Costa Blanca have their designation of

origin. The sweet and white wines from the Marina Alta and the “Fondillón” from the

Vinalopó are the best known ones. The red wine is strong and has a high degree

proof. With regard to liquors taken after meals we have

“Cantueso”, anisette, coffee liquor of Alcoy or “Herbero”

made of aromatic herbs from mount Mariola.

toes, green beans and onions. Stew

served in three courses is typical at

Christmas.

We have some more recipes with

fish such as the “suquet” that is a soup

of fish from rock or the “borreta” made

of cod.

Spain as well as with Europe by land and by air. The airport of

Alicante is placed between the cities of Alicante and Elche and it is

number seven in importance in Spain, counting 8 million passengers

a year. 80% of its traffic comes from Europe. There are direct flights

to the main European and National cities.

The Costa Blanca is crossed from the south to the north by a motorway

(A7) connecting the province with Catalonia and the rest of Europe. Another

motorway of recent construction (A37) communicates the A7 with Torrevieja

and the southern coast of the province. There is also another motorway con-

necting Alicante and the southern coast with Valencia via Alcoy. This motorway

will soon be communicated with the one going to Madrid.

migratory birds that spent winter there and aquatic birds such as

from Callosa d’Ensarriá, is shaped by waterfalls ending in lakes. To
