Description

A tour for those who want to explore Marseille free from a fixed itinerary, with plenty of time to ourselves and a special guide who

will give us the historical, cultural and practical information we need to explore the city on our own.

What we will see

The Old Port, Fort Saint-Jean and the Cathedral of Saint-Marie-Majeure

La Tourette Esplanade, Panier Quarter, La Vieille Charité, Daviel Pavilion and the Town Hall Square

Dockside Area

What we will do

Our guide will be waiting to welcome us as we disembark from the ship. Together, we make our way to the city centre,

specifically, a point near the Old Harbour where we begin our walking tour with a visit to Fort Saint-Jean, built in 1660 at the

behest of Louis XIV, and the chance to admire the exterior of the Neo-Byzantine Cathedral of Saint-Marie-Majeure.

Next, we head across La Tourette Esplanade, which offers views over both the old and new harbours.

Together with our guide, we visit the old heart of the city, the Panier quarter, with its artisan workshops and colourful, lively

cafés, then pay a visit to La Vieille Charité, built in 1664 as an almshouse for the city's poor and now home to a cultural centre

and a venue for temporary exhibitions

We then proceed on foot through typical, narrow Provençal streets to the Daviel Pavillion, which in turn leads to the square in

front of the Town Hall.

The last stop on our tour takes us to the Dockside area, a lively part of the city with many galleries, restaurants and shops. Our

guide will give us some useful pointers as to where to make our purchases.

At this point, we are left with plenty of free time and we are given a map of the city to explore Marseille at leisure.

At the end of the excursion, we can avail ourselves of the dedicated shuttle bus service to make our way back to the port.

Places on this excursion are limited. We recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.

This excursion is not recommended for guests with mobility problems.

This excursion involves some walking. We recommend wearing appropriate footwear and comfortable clothing.?

MARSEILLE DISCOVERY & TASTE

What we will see

The Church of Saint Laurent and the view of the Old Port

La Major Cathedral and Esplanade

Museum Complex

Panier quarter, La Vieille Charité courtyard and loggia

What we will do

We begin our discovery tour of Marseille by taking the shuttle bus from the port to the Church of Saint-Laurent. The little

square in front of the church offers beautiful views of the Old Port and the hills surrounding the city.

We make our way downhill from the church towards Marseille's Neo-Byzantine cathedral, known locally as La Major. After a

tour around the outside of the building, we have a short stop in the new Esplanade, recently completed to coincide with

Marseille's nomination as the "European capital of culture 2013".

We then make our way to the new museum complex, which comprises three institutions: the Musée Regards de Provence, the

Ville Méditerranée and MuCEM the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations. Our guide will provide an overview

of each building from the outside.

We walk onwards, heading into the old heart of the city, the Panier quarter, with its artisan workshops and colourful, bustling

cafés.

Before we make our way into the web of narrow streets of the old town, we stop to visit the courtyard and the loggia of La

Vieille Charité, a building that originally served as an almshouse for the city's poor, but which is now home to a cultural centre

and a venue for temporary exhibitions. We then take another short break to sample the famous panissa, a sort of cake made

with just a few humble ingredients: chickpea flour, water and salt.

We make our way back to the Old Port, where we can either board the ship straight away, or spend a couple of hours of fee

time in the city centre.

Space is limited, so please reserve early. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The order of visits may vary.

Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer: at own leisure

What we will do

We leave Marseilles behind us and venture into spectacular Camargue, a series of swamps, ponds and paddy fields where

nature still reigns supreme.

Along the way, we are charmed by the magnificent views and could be lucky enough to spot the famous wild white horses or

majestic untamed bulls grazing in the moorland.

We stop at the Parc Ornithologique du Pont de Gau, which combines the joy of a stroll with the discovery of the bird species

living in the region such as graceful flamingoes, once on the brink of extinction, herons, egrets and storks.

We walk along paths, footbridges and walkways on a guided tour of the park, which covers 60 hectares of unspoilt nature

where flora and fauna coexist in harmony in their natural habitat. After the visit, we leave the park and head towards the capital

of Camargue, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer*, a small fishing village with white houses dominated by a relaxed evocative

atmosphere.

Here, we have some free time to explore the town. We can wander around the shops, enjoy local specialities or visit the town

sights before returning to the ship.

What we will do

We will leave the port by coach and make our way to Aix-en-Provence, a university and spa city and the political hub of

Provence, located about 30 minutes away from Marseille.

As soon as we arrive in Aix-en-Provence, we will immediately notice its sophisticated atmosphere as we walk freely around

the romantic streets in the centre, admiring aristocratic residences dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries.

Our walk wouldn't be complete without a stroll along Cours Mirabeau, a stunning, tree-lined avenue boasting beautiful

fountains and numerous outdoor cafés.

Another must is the Mazarin Quarter, designed by the Archbishop Michel Mazarin, brother of the famous Cardinal.

In the same area we can also admire the Place des Quatre Dauphins or “Four Dolphins Square”, with a beautiful fountain

adorned by sculptures of four dolphins, and the Saint Sauveur Cathedral, featuring various architectural styles ranging from

the 5th to the 17th century, which can be admired from all sides.

Yet Aix-en-Provence isn't all history and art, it's also a vibrant town offering a host of activities. We will set some time aside to

independently explore the elegant streets dotted with typical shops, the local fruit and vegetable market or relax at a café.

This excursion does not include a guide.

Avignon.

What we will see

Palace of the Popes

Free time for shopping and exploring the city

What we will do

We leave the port of Marseille by coach, and head for Avignon, a journey that takes about one hour. The city of Avignon is

famous for having been the seat of the Papacy from 1309 to 1377, a period known as the Avignon captivity . Pope Clement

V transferred the Papal court from Rome to Avignon, from where 7 Popes reigned until 1377 and 2 antipopes stayed on

almost until the end of the 14th century, bringing a period of prominence and prosperity to the city.

Our tour takes us to the Palace of the Popes which has been recognised in France as a historic monument since 1840, and

as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. The building, which is both a palace and a fortress, is one of the most

extraordinary examples of Gothic architecture of the 14th century. It was built in two phases, by two popes: to the north, the

more austere Palais Vieux (Old Palace) was built during the reign of Benedict XII; the Palais Neuf (New Palace), to the south,

was built by his successor, Clement VI. Inside, the now-empty galleries, chambers and chapels give an apparent impression of

austerity. The frescoes and handwoven tapestries in the bedrooms and the Papal study however, give a better idea of the

pomp and splendour of times gone by.

Before going back to the ship, we have some free time for a walk in the streets of the centre or for shopping.

This excursion is not recommended for guests with mobility problems.

Cassis: the town centre and the beach

What we will do

We set off from the port in Marseille accompanied by our guide and, after a panoramic tour of the city's principal landmarks,

we make our way to Cassis driving along the seafront. After the coach journey and a short walk we board a tour train, which

takes us into the village.

Cassis is a typical, small fishing village with pastel-coloured houses at the western extremity of the Côte d'Azur. A spectacular,

rocky promontory towers behind the village is crowned by a castle, which has now been converted into a luxury hotel, and

which lends the village an old world charm. * After a walk around the village together with our guide to get our bearings, we

are left on our own to enjoy lunch, go shopping or explore the village at leisure. Those who wish to do so can also spend some

time working on their tan, at the beach.

At the end of our visit, we board the tour train again and head back to the coach, which will take us back to the port in

Marseille via the motorway.

The drive to and from Cassis takes about an hour and 15 minutes each way.

An excursion for those who want to discover the hidden treasures and secrets of Marseille, a millennial melting pot of people and

What we will see

Cathedral of Notre Dame de la Garde and Church of Saint-Laurent

Le Panier quarter

Vieille Charité and Cathedral of Sainte Marie Majeure

What we will do

We leave from the left-hand side of the port and begin our tour of Marseille with a visit to the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de la

Garde which is at the highest point of the city at an altitude of 162 m above sea level, from where we can see the whole of

Marseille laid out before us.

We will then make our way to the Church of Saint-Laurent, a handsome example of Provençal Romanesque architecture, built

in pink stone from Couronne, with splendid views of the Old Port.

It also marks the beginning of the quarter known as Le Panier ("the basket"), which is one of the oldest quarters of Marseille

and the old heart of the city. It owes its name to the Le Logis du Panier inn, an old establishment dating back to the 17th

century. This part of the city is a typical Mediterranean port neighbourhood with the fronts of houses painted in a variety of

colours and narrow winding streets. Historically a favoured haunt of sailors, it is now one of Marseille's most characteristic

areas.

Following a visit to La Vieille Charité originally an almshouse for the city's poor, now home to a cultural centre and a venue for

temporary exhibitions we have the opportunity to try a local speciality, the navette (little boat), a traditional biscuit flavoured

with orange blossoms that is baked in the shape of a boat.

After a short break, close to La Vieille Charité, we pay a short visit to the Neo-Byzantine Cathedral of Saint-Marie-Majeure

also known by the locals as La Major before heading back to the port.

We walk to the starting point of our bike excursion. After our safety briefing, we are handed our electric bikes and get into the

We admire the lush greenery of the famous Parc de la Ciutadella, whose name derives from the fact that it was built over the

city fortress, and reach the Sagrada Familia, the incredible Neo-Gothic church designed by the talented Catalan architect

Antoni Gaudí at just 30 years of age. He continued to oversee its construction until his death and the church has yet to be

Entering the park, we will be plunged into a surreal, picturesque setting: fairy-tale buildings, a gigantic salamander decorated

with mosaics, forests of columns and a house with spires where the artist lived for twenty years.

We will return to the coach and a short journey will take us to Eixample, the district that is home to the famous Sagrada

Familia church (tour of the exterior). This gigantic work is still under construction decades later, following the plans left by the

master architect. Our local guide will point out the most distinctive details of the façade, a demonstration of Gaudí's incredible

creativity in its own right.

Before continuing our tour, we will have some free time to stroll around the district and do a bit of shopping.

Then we will continue on towards Casa Milà, better known as La Pedrera (literally "The Quarry"), one of Gaudí's last works and

the greatest example of Catalan modernism. The building, the last civil work designed by the master architect, is a true

triumph of curved lines with undulating faces, chimneys that coil around one another and the magnificent wrought iron railings

resembling breaking waves.

The next masterpiece that we will visit on our tour is Casa Batllò, a residential building enveloped in a surreal atmosphere. We

will admire the façade and roof, covered entirely in glistening multi-coloured scales. The extravagant inventiveness of the

shapes is inspired by the legend of Saint George (the patron saint of Catalonia) who fought the dragon, alluded to in the

sinuosity of the roof, while the rows of balconies and bone-like structures symbolise the victims.

On our way back to the ship, we will pass through the commercial heart of the historic centre, the famous Plaça de Catalunya

and the port area before bringing this magical day to a close.

What we will do

We will leave the port by coach and head north west towards Montserrat. The road that we will travel on crosses charming

landscapes that soon become mountainous, with breathtaking views of the surrounding scenery.

As we approach the summit of Montserrat, the outline of the Benedictine monastery will catch our eye ahead. The vast

complex lies nestled into the cliff 725 metres above sea level, offering us spectacular views.

A guided tour will lead us around this famous abbey built in the 11th century near a cave where the statue of the Black Virgin

was found in 880. The statue is known as "la Moreneta" because of its dark colouring and is still highly revered today.

The tour of the 15th-century basilica is an absolute must, and offers a setting where a strong sense of reflection and privacy

reign supreme. Guests who wish to can enter and see the wooden La Moreneta statue that lies in a chapel that is accessed

through a side entrance.

Dress code that is appropriate for the places of worship to be visited is recommended.

and religious life in the Middle Ages and, even today, its layout is still faithful to the classic Roman Cardo and Decumanus grid

structure.

In Plaça Nova, traces of the Roman settlement abound in a string of architectural delights. We can still see the two semi-

circular towers that flanked the gateway to the Decumanus road, as well as sections of the city's defence walls and the arch of

an aqueduct.

Amidst temple columns and the remains of walls that peep up every now and then, almost casually incorporated into more

modern buildings, we will walk along Via Laietana, which takes its name from the first Iberian population to settle in this region.

Built in the early 20th century, it has retained the architectural heritage of the Roman walls.

A must on our tour of the Roman remains is the Barcelona History Museum, known as MUHBA, which has preserved and

exhibits Barcelona's rich historical heritage, from its Roman origins to the modern day.

The highlight of the tour is the Plaça del Rei underground complex where we can admire the remains of an entire district of

The first stop on our excursion is the Sagrada Familia, the iconic symbol of the city of Barcelona, a destination for visitors from

all over the world, believed by many to be one of the most extraordinary man-made monuments in the world.

It is a majestic Neo-Gothic church inspired by the great medieval cathedrals and built in a Modernist style: the Catalan version

of Art Nouveau.

It was the work of talented architect Antoni Gaudí, who designed it at the age of just 30 and dedicated the rest of his life to

completing it. Work began on the church in 1882 and is still ongoing, following the designer's plans. This will make our visit

even more fascinating as we will witness the creation of one of the greatest architectural masterpieces in the world.

Our guide will show us two of the façades that have already been completed: the Nativity façade and the Passion façade. Then

we will enter the church where expert artisans are working on this constantly evolving monument.

Then we will continue on towards Passeig de Gràcia, the most fashionable avenue in the city with its charming, modern

buildings like Casa Batllò, another of skilful Gaudí's masterpieces.

Much more than just a building, Casa Batllò holds an entire world of contemporary art, architecture and design, offering

visitors a unique, surreal experience. The extravagant inventiveness of the shapes is inspired by the legend of Saint George

(the patron saint of Catalonia) who fought the dragon, alluded to in the multi-coloured sinuosity of the roof, while the rows of

balconies and bone-like structures symbolise the victims.

We will end our tour admiring Casa Milà, better known as La Pedrera (tour of the exterior), Gaudí's last work. The building is a

true triumph of curved lines with undulating faces, chimneys that coil around one another and the magnificent wrought iron

railings resembling breaking waves.

Guests are not allowed to stay on the bus during the stops.

The way from the parking lot to the venue of Sagrada Familia is approximately 15 minutes of walking.

What we will do

We begin with a panoramic coach tour that introduces us to some of the most interesting parts of Lisbon, after which we

travel to the Baixa district, which was entirely rebuilt under the supervision of the Marquess of Pombal following the

earthquake of 1755.

Having arrived in the city we stop at the Rossio, the name commonly given to Dom Pedro IV Square, the beating heart of the

city from where all the main streets fan out. Here we have some free time to admire the elegant historic buildings that line the

square and indulge in some shopping.

Returning to the coach, we travel along the River Tago until we arrive at the Parque das Nações, the area built to host the

Universal Exhibition in 1998. We'll be fascinated by the beauty of the park with its highly modern buildings, masterpieces by

some of the greatest names in contemporary architecture.

At the end of our visit to the park we head for the Oceanarium, home to over 10,000 animal species and more than 350

plant varieties. The visit is fun and fascinating for kids and adults alike, an opportunity to learn more about the various marine

ecosystems faithfully reproduced here. The central tank, which presents the various life forms that populate all the oceans of

the planet in over 5,000 m3 of water, is truly unmissable.

A city of contrasts blending modern and classic architecture, Lisbon is bathed in extraordinary light that accentuates the

variety and intensity of its colours. The capital of Portugal boasts a wealth of unmissable locations: Praça do Comércio,

considered by many to be the most beautiful square in Europe; the Rossio, the name commonly given to Dom Pedro IV

Square, the beating heart of the city from where all the main streets fan out; Praça dos Restauradores, the square created to

commemorate the liberation of Portugal from Spanish rule in 1640, featuring an obelisk on which the dates of the

Portuguese Restoration are marked; Avenida da Liberdade, considered to be the most luxurious street in Lisbon with its

fountains and the abstract designs on its pavements, where once only members of high society were permitted to walk; and

Parque Eduardo VII, one of the city's largest green spaces, which was created in the late 19th century and named after the

British King, Edward VII.

During the excursion we also have some free time to take a walk in the centre.

We then stop in the Belém district and the residential area of Restelo, where we visit the Jerónimos Monastery.

The tour ends with a photostop to the Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries, which was built in 1960 to mark

We begin our excursion with a sightseeing tour of Lisbon, a fascinating city that over the centuries has charmed travellers and

sailors.

Keeping to the coast, we can admire some of the main places of interest in the Portuguese capital: the great Praça do

Comércio, with its five Catholic churches and typical colonial houses, and the historic district of Belém dotted with monuments

dating back to the 15th and 16th century, built to celebrate the Portuguese discoveries.

We leave the city, heading west along the northern bank of the Tagus River towards the most popular beaches accessible

from central Lisbon, with their expanses of sand lapped by the ocean.

Our final destination is Carcavelos beach, where the Portuguese traditionally go on New Year's Eve for their first swim of the

What we will do

We leave Vigo and head south towards the Province of Pontevedra and we cross the border to reach Valença do Minho, a

charming town situated in the north of Portugal on the main artery which links Santiago di Compostela and Porto. We stop to

visit this magnificent fortified town, with its characteristic star shape, whose walls shelter pretty small squares and picturesque

alleys which leave indelible impressions in our memory.

The city was originally founded with the name "Contrasta", because it was built in front of the Galician city of Tui at the behest

of King Sancho I of Portugal after the breakdown of the marriage of his daughter Teresa with Alfonso IX of Castile. Its current

name dates back to 1262.

From the fortress of Valença we admire the view of the fortified cathedral of Tui, on the opposite bank of the River Miño.

What we will do

After leaving the port by coach we head for the Monte del Castro: situated close to the sea, it is one of the symbols of the city

We stop briefly here to admire the panorama of the city of Vigo, the bay and the port.

Back on our coach we proceed along the coast road in the direction of Baiona, one of the major and most characteristic

fishing villages on the Galician coast. Its historic centre, with its quaint narrow streets and neat stone and granite houses,

cobbled streets and the views from the ramparts with a sheer drop above the sea, exudes an atmosphere of orderly tradition

and a sense of pleasant intimacy.

It was right here, on 1st March 1493, that one of the caravels of the Columbus expedition, the "Pinta", having crossed back

After our stroll around the historic centre, we visit the Parador Monterreal, an imposing 16th century palace, built in the style

of a Galician manor house within the walls of a Medieval fortress. Today it houses a splendid hotel, whose centrepiece is the

magnificent stone staircase which leads from the entrance to the floor above. From the terrace you can admire the wonderful

What we will do

On this day excursion we plunge into the past, discovering the Normandy beaches where the allies landed on 6 June 1944.

Visiting the D Day sites we will learn more about the events and the methods of military intervention and remember the

heroism of the allied forces.

At the D-Day Museum we will discover scale models, dioramas and films that depict, in incredible detail, the tremendous

efforts and sacrifices of the allies during Operation Overlord (the code name for the landings) and the construction of

Mulberry artificial harbours.

We will then travel to Arromanches, another beach at the centre of events where the remains of the floating harbour where

thousands of allied soldiers embarked are still visible.

Our tour will end with a visit to another historic beach, Omaha, sadly known as Bloody Omaha due to the heavy losses

suffered by American troops.

At the summit of the hill that dominates the beach we will visit the American cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer where, in an

English-style green field filled with perfectly aligned, immaculate white crosses, 10,000 American soldiers are buried. The

emotion is almost palpable.

What we will do

Our excursion will take us on a complete visit to the city of Rouen, situated on the northern banks of the Seine and considered to be

the historic capital of Normandy as well as a source of inspiration for many writers and painters. The guide leads us on a walk along

the narrow streets of the old town with over seven hundred houses, large and small, built in typical style from wood and timber,

characteristic examples of medieval architectural techniques.

We will then stroll along Rue Saint-Romain, one of the most beautiful streets in the city with the magnificent church of Saint

Maclou, an exceptional example of flamboyant Gothic architecture.

We will continue along the lively and highly populated Rue du Gros Horloge with its exceptional defensive clock tower and

admire the adjacent courthouse/, housed in a magnificent Renaissance building.

We then visit Rouen Cathedral (13th-16th century.), considered to be one of the greatest examples of French Gothic art.

What is most attractive about the cathedral is its variety: the immense façade, bristling with fretworked pinnacles, rises up

between two completely different towers, the Tour Saint Romain on the left and the Tour de Beurre on the right.

Before enjoying our free time, perhaps indulging in some shopping, we will stop at the Place du Vieux Marché, the old market

What we will do

The first stage of our tour is the small town of Étretat, located by the sea and famous for having inspired the works of two

great impressionist painters: Claude Monet and Eugène Isabey. The town has always enjoyed an excellent reputation, thanks in

part to its position which today makes Étretat a famous tourist resort.

Before exploring the town we will admire the majesty of the high cliffs and the various forms of the rocks on which the waves

break: an unforgettable spectacle at any time of year, immortalised in the famous paintings of Monet and Isabey and a source

of inspiration for numerous writers, artists and directors.

We will then visit the town centre with its elegant wooden houses, medieval church and enchanting market square brought to

life by delightful little shops and wooden architecture.

Leaving Étretat we travel along the coast towards Fécamp where we visit the 19th century Benedictine palace inspired by

Gothic and Renaissance styles. Although it has the appearance of a palace, in reality it is home to a distillery producing the

famous Bénédictine liqueur. The building also hosts an original collection from the famous Fécamp abbey: alongside

sculptures, monastic charters and books from the monks' library we can see documents and utensils connected to the

production of the liqueur.

thanks to its configuration, the rich history of the abbey and the beauty of its architecture. The little island, with a

circumference of around 1 km, reaches a height of 80 metres and is connected to the bay via a paved road built in 1879

which is submerged at high tide. The area is known for its alternating tides, causing changes to the sandbars that surround the

mount. Here the movement of the tides is the highest in the whole of France and the difference between high and low tide

can be over 12 metres.

We will begin our visit at the fortified entrance, the Porte de Bavole built by Gabriel du Puy in 1590, and continue along the

Grand Rue, a steep road that comes to life in the summer with souvenir shops and restaurants and crosses the picturesque

village towards the abbey, church and cloister.

We will also visit the walls along a route that offers enchanting views of the bay and the abbey gardens.

We arrive at the Abbey which dates back to the 8th century when the Archangel Michael appeared to Aubert, bishop of

Avranches, telling him to build a church on the rock. The bishop founded an oratory on the island, then known as Mont

Tombe. In the Carolingian period the oratory was replaced by an abbey and from that time until the 16th century, magnificent

Romanesque and Gothic buildings were constructed. The abbey was well fortified and never conquered; having been used as

a prison during the French Revolution and the Second Empire, in 1874 it was declared a Historic Monument and opened to

the public all year round.

Before returning to Cherbourg we will have free time to shop for souvenirs (with a wide range of copper, ceramic and

porcelain objects to choose from) and local produce (such as butter biscuits and other typical products of Normandy). We can

enjoy the atmosphere of this medieval village whose inhabitants carry on the island's traditions, continuing to make products

for the delight of visitors and pilgrims coming to this unique site, just as they did over a thousand years ago.

This excursion is not recommended for guests with mobility problems.

What we will do

The charming destination for our excursion is the wonderful city of Amsterdam, the most densely populated city and capital of

the Netherlands, well-known and loved across the world for its canals which extend for more than 100 km, approximately 90

islands and 1,500 bridges which have earned it the name of, "Venice of the North" and its status as a UNESCO world heritage

site. The city is the commercial capital of the Netherlands and one of the main financial hubs in the world.

One of the city's essential features is the charming canals that cross the city and the houses with their unique architecture and

the distinctive gables that frame them.

Since it was formed, Amsterdam has become a flourishing economic and cultural hub and, since the time of Rembrandt, the

most important Dutch painter, it has also been considered a prestigious artistic centre. Indeed, today the city is famous for its

wealth of museums, most notably the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk.

Amsterdam is also renowned for being the ideal city for business and purchases. You can find practically everything here,

ranging from bargain items at the typical flea markets to typical Dutch products like cheese and clogs, and from precious

glassware and magnificent Delft ceramics to the beautiful varieties on offer at the famous flower market.

We leave the cruise terminal and head to the city centre for our sightseeing tour. The first building that we note is the majestic

Mint Tower (Munttoren), a Renaissance-style bell tower.

Right in the centre of the concentric semicircular structure of canals lies the imposing Central Station building, built in the late

19th century on three artificial islands.

The Schreierstoren building is much older, built as a defensive tower in 1481, part of the city's medieval fortifications. The last

of its kind remaining, it is one of the oldest buildings in Amsterdam.

After the sightseeing tour, the coach will take us to one of the most famous and most frequented museums in the city, the

Van Gogh Museum, where we will be free to roam on our own. The museum houses the largest collection of Vincent Van

Gogh works in the world, including some of his masterpieces such as "Sunflowers", "Blossoming Almond Tree" and "Vincent's

Bedroom in Arles", as well as a total of 200 paintings, 400 drawings and 700 letters.

We will have a look round the museum shop which sells posters, bags, books and souvenirs inspired by the life and works of

Vincent Van Gogh.

Upon completion of the tour you will be taken to Schiphol Airport.

After the tour, we leave the coach for the second part of our itinerary when we board a boat for a picturesque cruise along

and the Albert Cuyp Markt. The former is the first and only floating flower market in the world, a status it has held since the

second half of the 19th century when flowers and plants were brought into the city on a daily basis across the water. Today it

is a popular tourist destination where you can find bulbs and all kinds of souvenirs for sale, as well as flowers and plants.

The Albert Cuyp market, very popular with the Dutch and very busy in all seasons, has not been completely discovered by

tourists yet. Every day, 260 stalls offer the many visitors all kinds of products, from clothing to food. While we roam freely in

We leave the port behind as we enjoy a lovely stroll towards Amsterdam’s central station.

Just like the locals do everyday, we get on a ferry crossing the North Sea Canal, constructed during the second half of the

We thus reach the first stop on our excursion: the A’dam Lookout, an observation platform from where you can enjoy a 360°

The tower was built on the river bank and dominates the landscape at 100 metres tall. The city of Amsterdam stretches out

Those interested in learning more about the history and culture of the Dutch capital can visit the state-of-the-art interactive

The A’dam Lookout has something in store for thrill-seekers too: an incredible series of suspended swings over the edge of

What we will do

The first part of this brief but fascinating itinerary, which offers an array of Amsterdam's beautiful sights, takes us on a

charming sightseeing boat tour along the many canals that form the city's unique structure.

As we sail along, we admire all the wonders that pass before our eyes from our privileged viewpoint. We will have to be careful

not to miss even a detail of the characteristic, tall narrow buildings which line the canals, with the typical gables, each one

different from the next, and the numerous bridges in all shapes and sizes that appear on the horizon. Skinny Bridge (Magere

brug) is the most famous in the city: a wooden drawbridge over the River Amstel from which Amsterdam takes its name.

From the water, we also see one of the city's icons appear before us: the bell tower of the Western Church (Westerkerk), the

oldest in the city is almost 90 metres high.

Very close to the church, along the Prinsengracht, is the house, now a museum, in which a young Jewish girl, Anne Frank

took refuge for two years, with her family before being caught by the Nazis, and where she wrote her famous diary, a precious

testimony of the tragedy of the Holocaust .

After the boat tour, another pleasant itinerary awaits us, this time on our coach which will cross the city, showing us the main

points of interest. Sitting comfortably on the coach, we can admire the very central Dam and the magnificent buildings which

What we will do

Holland is known throughout the world as the country of tulips, canals and...windmills! So this excursion which takes us to visit

the authentic, rural Holland is a must, with its vast green plains and magnificent windmills that are reflected in the water.

The first destination on our itinerary is one of the most charming places in the Netherlands: Zaanse Schans; the name means

"Fortification on the river Zaan" and refers to its original purpose during the 80 years' war, the revolt against Spanish rule,

between the 16th and 17th centuries.

We enter a typical 18th-19th century village: vibrant and industrious, full of wooden windmills, barns, homes and museums,

approximately 35 wooden buildings built in the typical Dutch architectural style and transported, piece by piece since 1961,

to this magical open-air museum.

It is a unique experience, stepping into the past with all the images, scents and flavours of times gone by. We walk through the

wonderful magical landscape, we visit some of the many windmills and historic buildings, and browse the artisan shops where

the traditional clogs are made and the famous Dutch cheese is produced.

The next part of our itinerary takes us to the charming Catholic village of Volendam, a famous tourist attraction renowned for

the traditional clothes that some of its residents still wear and for its old fishing boats.

Before exploring this romantic fishing village, we have lunch in one of the inviting restaurants. After lunch, we can take

advantage of the free time at our disposal in this picturesque place to walk along the quay lined with typical green wooden

houses with red sloping roofs and admire the delightful marina and the docked boats being rocked by the delicate motion of

the sea. Or we can stroll through the picturesque narrow streets, lined with typical little houses standing side by side, and cross

the charming canals overlooked by small wooden bridges.

At the end of this wonderful day discovering and immersing ourselves in old rural, seafaring Holland, our coach will take us to

Schiphol airport.

The excursion is only available to guests whose flight departs after 6pm.

What we will do

We will hop on-board the coach and begin our tour with a sightseeing tour of Aarhus, the second largest city in Denmark, the

perfect successful combination between modern vivacity and testimony to the past.

We can admire the Aarhus City Hall, to the south of Rådhuspladsen, in the city's busiest area. Known for its modernist

We will continue on our tour visiting the Aarhus Cathedral, the longest and tallest in Denmark and one of the oldest red brick

buildings in Jutland. Presently, the restored bell tower stands at more than 94 metres, whilst the church is more than 90

metres long. Inside houses more than 200 frescos from the 14th and 15th Centuries, as well as an altar from the 16th

Century sculpted by the Master of Lübeck, Bernt Notke.

At the end of this fascinating visit we can take advantage of some free time to walk through the city centre.

Before returning, we will stop at the*open-air museum of Den Gamle By*. Here we will visit a reproduction of a traditional

Danish village which houses over 75 original historic structures, amongst which, craft studios, residences, a theatre, a post

office and a school, taken from all over Denmark where every brick is numbered to be able to reconstruct them exactly as

they were within the museum.

We will find ourselves immersed in atmospheres from times past, passing by buildings built between the 15th and 18th

Centuries where museum personnel, dressed in period costumes, will entertain visitors presenting domestic activities or work,

typical in the daily lives of those from centuries passed.

towers and numerous castles.

Our destination is the island’s fairy-tale capital city of Odense, famous for being the birthplace of author and national symbol

Hans Christian Andersen.

Here, we visit the house where Andersen was born, a low yellow cottage and now a museum where we can admire some of

his letters, manuscripts, personal items and books.

After an enjoyable lunch in one of the local restaurants, we reach Fynske Landsby, the Funen Village, a Dutch village that has

remained practically unchanged with original buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries now an open-air museum.

We wander around the streets at our leisure, entering barns, gardens, houses owned by farmers as well as by richer families

and learn how everyday life used to be like in this region two centuries ago.

We go on a guided tour of the prison to discover how convicts and prison guards lived their everyday lives. Thanks to modern

technological devices, the prison comes to life providing a thrilling multi-sensorial experience: on our tour, we can see virtual

prisoners and guards walking around the corridors, toilets and cells, hear steps going up and down the stairs as well as the

clangour of doors closing and even perceive the smell of smoke that characterised the detention sector. We will truly feel like

convicts!

The tour is conducted from the point of view of detainee Jens Nielsen, the last person to be executed in Denmark when he

was beheaded in 1892.

We visit the cells set up according to the various historical eras and admire a vast collection of objects connected with life in

prison, the largest in the world including the axe used to execute Nielsen.
