A number of residents who came to

the Help Desk raised the issue of how dark the property was as a re-

sult of the street lights going out

one by one.

After many months of darkness and

numerous representations being made to the municipality the com-

mittee decided to employ a con-tractor to attend to the problem. On

Thursday 28 April the contractor ar-rived, replaced the globes and other maintenance that was re-

quired and then ‘there was light’.

Cottages Chronicles

LET THERE BE LIGHT !

On Thursday 12 May 2016 the committee organised a Soup & Sherry evening to enable the residents of the cottages to get to know the committee members better as well as to provide a forum to enable resi-dents to interact with each other.

Chairman Neville Lynn welcomed everyone present and gave a brief report on the activities of the com-mittee and some of the plans for the future.

After the welcoming the residents got stuck into the delicious vegetable soup that had been prepared by

Bettie and Staff as well as the home made bread supplied by Hennie and Renette Nel. A large stock of vetkoek was made by Annatjie ‘slaghuis’ Oosthuizen.

It was really wonderful to see our residents mingling with each other and getting to know our ’family’ better.

Everyone agreed that similar functions must be held in the future.

Every Friday we are very grateful to Harry Reichert, Mary

Neuville and Poppie van Dyk who take turns to voluntarily

give up their time in order to take advantage of the opportu-

nity that Highveld Spar give us to collect money.

The money that they collected is banked into the savings

account that will in due course be used to purchase a new

combi.

End of summer braai

On Saturday 16 April a residents braai was held before we all went into hiberna-tion for the winter.

As usual a most enjoy-able function was held which was enjoyed by all.

Thanks to Koos, Eddie and Hansie who cooked the meat and the staff for the pap & sous.

Westhuizen who are leaving Witbank to re-

tire to White River.

Over the years they have been very gener-

ous to us especially with their generous do-

nations to the Christmas Party.

We all wish them a long and happy retire-

THE TERRIBLE TWINS ?

We have decided to use the space right at the top of the cottages to plant vegetables that will be able to be used in the kitchen. Our gardener Auphrey has taken charge of the vegetable garden and will do his best to ensure it ’ s success. Currently there is cabbage, beetroot, let-tuce, carrots, spinach, turnips and radishes planted.

Another round of those wonderful Church Bulletins! Thank God for church

ladies with typewriters. These sentences (with all the BLOOPERS) actually

Miss Charlene Mason sang 'I will not pass this way again,' giving obvious

pleasure to the congregation.

The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare's Hamlet in the Church

basement Friday at 7 PM. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy.

On Wednesday, 11 May, Moth Esmé Taylor answered the Sunset Call for Higher Service at 102 years of age. Tannie Esmé was the oldest resident at MOTH Sound Memory Cottages, where she had worked and lived

for over forty years. Tannie Esmè was born on 27 May 1913 one year before the First World War (WWI), better known as the Great World War, as such Esmè lived through both World Wars.

During WWII, 1939 to 1945, Esmé served in the South African Defence Force as a nurse in the 4

th South

African Field Hospital in Cairo, Egypt. In her time Mrs Taylor played a mean game of bowls at Witbank Golf Bowls Club and was the first woman who was allowed to play in the then men only MOTH Bowls Nationals Tournament, where she represented Jiggerflea Shellhole.

Although no longer active in the MOTH Order Tannie Esmè participated in most MOTH functions. At the annual Armistice Day service in November last year she laid a wreath on behalf of MOTH Sound Memory Cottages. In April she officially re-joined the Order at MOTH Crater Shellhole.

Esmé is survived by two stepdaughters namely Maureen and Lesley.

MOTHER ’ S DAY A SPECIAL TEA WAS ARRANGED IN THE LOUNGE FOR MOTHERS ’ DAY BY OUR NURSE ELIZE EV-

ANS . IT WAS W ELL ATTENDED BY THE LADIES (AND BEN) W ITH THEIR CHILDREN AND GRAND CHILDREN .

Elizabeth (Bettie) Eliza Diederich Grovè was born in Heidel burg on 3 September 1957 one of the seven children of

Marthinus and Sina Lindeque. Bettie has three brothers and

two sisters.

When she was still young the family relocated to Carolina where Bettie attend school and where she met her first boy

friend Koos Grovè.

In 1974 she started working at the Carolina Hospital as nurse.

Bettie left Carolina in 1978 when she married Koos and they

moved to Witbank.

Bettie started to work at the SA Perm in Witbank she was also at Mom’s Pharmacy and at the Recreation Club at SACE. On 14 August 2009 Bettie joined the Staff at the cottages as manager.

Koos and Bettie have been married for thirty eight years and have two daughters Eliza and Yolandi and also a son Jaco. They also have four granddaughters and a grandson.

Bettie and Koos are keen fishermen and enjoy relaxing together on a fishing excur-sion. Bettie also enjoys travelling and seeing new places but is always pleased to get home because she enjoys her job.

However, Bettie’s greatest passion is catering and enjoys nothing more than cook-ing.
