elcome to this month’s magazine which is being jointly edited byme, Sue Lockett, and Helen Thomson. I live in Cotton and myhusband Ivan has farmed in Finningham and Cotton for over 40years. We moved from Green Farm, Finningham to Poplar Farm,Dandy Corner 15 years ago and just last year made what we hopewill be our final move, to Stackyard House, Dandy Corner, Cotton.
I have been a member of the Regional Advisory Committee for the ForestryCommission in the East of England for 5+ years and over the past couple of yearsone of the issues that is causing significant concern is the spread of diseases inour native tree stock. In a recent communication Dr John Morgan, Head of theForestry Commission’s Plant Health service said: “Britain’s trees and the peoplewho care for them are in the front line of a challenging struggle to manage arange of potentially very damaging plant pests and diseases that have, in mostcases, entered the country from abroad”. It would seem that now our Oak, HorseChestnut, Sweet Chestnut, Ash, Pine, Larch, Beech and Plane trees are atsignificant risk from attack. The Forestry Commission is diverting more of itsexpenditure towards researching and combating tree pests over the next threeyears but with the expansion of global trade, especially in live plants, there is aconstant risk of accidental introduction of exotic pests and pathogens.Lots of detailed information is available about tree pests and diseases which canbe found on the Forest Research web site at www.forestry.gov.uk/forestresearchwhere you will find much information on how to recognise symptoms and the bestway of combating the spread of diseases. In addition two short films have beenlaunched that provide information about the threat from diseases caused in trees, woods and forest plants by two particularly damaging organisms: Phytophthoraramorum and Phytophthora kernoviae. They also provide information about howwe can all help to prevent their spread. The link is: www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/INFD-8UKF7A
My personal view is that we need greatly to strengthen our island’s bio-securitybut as the current system relies on the EU borders rather than individual countryborders it is extremely difficult to ensure that all imports to the EU and internallywithin the EU are clear of pests. Perhaps it is time to renegotiate the Treaty!
Sue Lockett

Parish News - The Future - A QuestionnaireLast year the editor of the Parish News decided to retire and, rather than see itfold, a number of us volunteered to edit it, each for one month only, and after ayear assess how things were going. We have been going for 9 months now withabout 30 volunteers and are proud of the fact that quality has improved, theamount of both advertising and contributed materials have increased, as has thecirculation. Helen Thomson has been giving very generously of her time andexpertise, has computerised (almost) everything and has done most of thegeneral management and monthly magazine outline preparation – a job whichshe is very keen to hand over.
Currently we are in the situation where the advertisers and the subscriptions coverthe costs of printing and our only other expenses are for sundries such as postage.
But where to from here? Are you willing to help to keep it going? Or are youwilling to pay more than £1.50 for 12 issues? Should we pay someone to edit itrather than rely on Volunteers? We really need your input so that we can makesome decisions about keeping it going – or not!
So please fill in the questionnaire below and put it through Rev Liz’s letterbox(The Rectory, Church Road, Bacton) or e-mail [email protected] with yourquestionnaire answers, comments and suggestions.
1. Do you want the Parish News to keep going? YesNo2. Would you be willing to pay more than £1.50 for 12 issues? YesNo
If Yes: £5/year £10/year £15/year other £______
3. Would you be prepared to volunteer as:
a Guest Editor (there are 2 per month) overall Editor, Organiser & Manager Proof Reader Chasing Content Delivering Technical Support
If so can we please have your name, e-mail address & telephone number?

Bacton & District W.I. Meeting July 2nd 2012
At our July meeting we were lucky enough to have asour speaker local cookery guru Helen Hardy who treatedus to a lively and interesting talk about her experiencesas a cookery writer in South Africa, to which she hadtravelled at the tender age of 21. Helen illustrated hertalk with various magazine articles and many cookerybooks from her illustrious career. She had also printedout for us leaflets containing ‘retro’ recipes such asSmoked Mackerel Pate as well as some typical South African recipes. Not onlythat but Helen also brought with her some delicious treats for us to sample.
Our next meeting which is on Monday August the 6th will feature AnnyaStoddart telling us all about Acupuncture. Some of our members havevolunteered to be guinea pigs so it should be very interesting as well as,hopefully, rejuvenating. The competition is ‘Your Favourite Health Tip’ and, as Ican’t be there, the meeting will be run by our vice-president, Angela Cook.

Chairman of the Friends of Cotton Church, the FCC, after 18years of intensive fund raising for St Andrews. Alan, with
his wife Val, plus friends and helpers managed to raisea whopping sum of £240,000. What an achievement!
l doubt if the church would be barely standing without allthe hard work and dedication of Alan & Val and theirhappy helpers. One cannot help but feel a little sad for
we had so much fun. The annual Art Show (which Keithand Ann Bullock had originally organised), the cricket
match, Andrew Stringer’s wonderful show of Oriental rugsand Kelims, wine and cheese, carol concerts, wine tasting, go-cart races, conkermatches (before health and safety). So many happy memories. Thank you Alanand Val plus friends for making our church a beautiful building to be proud of.Marianne Rumens

Just Container GardeningI'd never counted the number of containers in my garden until I started to writethis article. They total 76 of one type or another. One thing about containers inyour garden, you can control the planting medium, watering and feeding, alsothey can be mobile. If you don't like the position of some of your pots you canmove them easier than if the plants were in the ground.I use my containers as a barrier across the garden as this conveniently dividesthe garden into sections. A line of containers can draw your eye to a particularpart of the garden or lead you around a corner. The only restriction on the type of container and plants used is your imagination.I've seen an old leather boot planted up which looked very attractive standing in aborder. If you have an old broken down wheel barrow don't throw it away. Putsome drainage holes in the bottom, place some old crocks, concave-side down, this helps with the drainage and will allow water to find a way of escaping out fromthe bottom of the barrow. Plant it up with summer bedding and you will have agreat talking point.I have three different types and size of chimney pots planted up in my garden. One, with an ornamental red grass that shimmers in the wind, another with ablue/green Juniper over hanging the sides of the pot and the third I start with a potof Hyacinths, moving on to Daffodils and then changing throughout the season. There are wooden planters, metal containers, terracotta window boxes, threesizes of glazed pots, a galvanised watering can, china pots and a butler sinkwhich I use for my alpine garden. If you are able to acquire an old style Butler sink, and have the ability to work withit, make up a mix of sand and cement, about five parts sand to one part cement, not very much water in the early stages. You need a reasonably stiff mix and adda good quantity of peat to the mixture. It’s good fun trying to get the mix toadhere to the sides of the sink. Try and score the glaze on all sides of the sink ifyou can, this helps the cement/peat mix adhere. Try applyingthe mix over two days you will find the mix will adherebetter the second day with a coating already applied. Why peat you may ask. Once your sink is planted upinto a miniature Alpine garden, or whatever you decideto plant, after about a month green moss will start togrow, on the peat mix, over the surface and give amature appearance. Happy Gardening fromNorman Parcell.

RBL Women’s Section from Sandra WelhamA super garden meeting was held in June at Squirrel’s Hall, Wattisfield, which isthe home of Peggy and Ian Dryden. It was a lovely still clear evening andmembers were able to stroll around the immaculate garden and enjoy the variousgames. A lovely spread of refreshments had been prepared by Peggy and therewas a good draw run by Cynthia Elmer which made £42.50 profit. Guess theweight of the cake was won by Marina Ruck. Marbles in a tin by RosamundWells. Bowls by Angela Elmer. Darts won by Maureen Chambers. ChairmanAngela Elmer thanked Peggy and her family and presented her with a plant inappreciation. In July, the members met in the village hall and organised the July‘B’ Group meeting to be hosted by Bacton when the speaker will be florist LynCurtis. Also organised was the Lucky Dip Stall to be run at Bacton Fayre forwhich the members have donated approximately 150 prizes. The speaker wasPip Wright who showed slides and spoke on the book ‘Lucky is the Name’ whichhe compiled and co-edited. This was very interesting as it involved local villagesand is the story of Alfred Burrows written by him about his father Lucky’s largefarming family. Pip was thanked by the Chairman for bringing the book to life andall the books written by Pip were available for the members to purchase.

Bye-Bye Bacton!
After a short and action packed 4 years at Bacton Middle School,we still don’t feel ready to leave. All the teachers are fabulous, with
their own unique styles. Although we love our lessons, there isnothing better than having lesson time off, to go and do some funactivities; such as helping teachers with disco set-ups, or going tothe Primary Schools, to help out with sporting activities. As the endof term is arriving, there are tons and tons of exciting activities linedup for us; approaching soon is the Year 8 Pleasure Wood Hills trip.
Also there is the long awaited Year 8 prom which every girl hasdreamed of since they were a foot tall. Arranging the prom, is a
group of us Year 8 pupils who are determined to make prom a nightto remember. Bacton makes every second count and none of us
wants to leave. Next month we will be losing our amazing teacherand the best basketball coach we could ask for; Mr. Russell. He has
brought us from amateur netball players, to County standardbasketball players. Also he has brought us lots of pride and successin everything we do. We have gained skills that we can use later on
in life. Not only is Bacton losingMr. Russell, it is losing its highly fantabulous English teacher
Miss Morris. Miss Morris is greatly thought of by all pupils. When wecame up in year 5, we were not the only ones new to the school;Miss Morris joined at the same time as us and she has grown not
only as a teacher, but as a friend too. The school’s famous ‘StrictlyCome Dancing’ was also a very memorable part of middle school.
As the days are closing in, it is time for us to say goodbye to Bacton.Although we don’t want to go, unfortunately we have to. We willalways remember Bacton Community Middle School as a fun
atmosphere to be in. Bye-Bye Bacton!

From the Rectory
Dear All
Well, the Latitude Festival is over for another year, and I have become sointimately acquainted with top-quality Suffolk mud that I shall never look atchocolate sauce in quite the same way ever again.
For the last two years, when people of all ages and shapes and sizesgather on the green fields of Henham Park near Southwold for four daysof music, mayhem and of course mud, the Suffolk Town Pastors havebeen invited to provide a friendly, supportive and helpful presence amongthe festival-goers. Volunteers from all over the county come together forthis, and I’ve enjoyed meeting and patrolling the site with Pastors fromSudbury, Ipswich, Felixstowe, Bury and Newmarket as well as our ownStowmarket team. This year the well-dressed female music lover issporting a wreath of artificial rosebuds on her partly-dyed hair, while bothsexes show a great fondness for dayglo face-paint, gold mascara and hatsshaped like furry animal heads with long tails hanging down on either side. All combined with the obligatory wellies… Jesus loved a good party, andhe’d no doubt have been in there with the best, sitting up half the nightaround a camp-fire and putting the world to rights with his friends.
The Town Pastors are generally reckoned to do the best tea and coffee onthe campsite, and our magic mug deal – you invest £1.50 in a highlycollectable souvenir china mug, you get a free drink with the mug, andevery time you bring it back you can have it refilled for 50p – meant therewas usually a crowd waiting outside our stripy tent at 8.30 each morningwhen it opened. Besides welcoming the revellers in and offering themprayer for anything troubling them, we roamed round the campsite givingpractical help and Love Hearts where we felt they would do the mostgood, and having some amazingconversations about life, God, what TownPastors do (quite a number knew aboutPastors from their own home towns), musicand of course mud.
Whatever you’re doing this summer, I hopeyou have a great time too.
Liz Varley

NO GREATER LOVE
It’s called La Coupole, the Dome. In a chalk quarry outside the town of St Omer just overthe Channel in northern France, a former railway tunnel leads deep under the hillside andinto a maze of tunnels and chambers under a vast concrete dome. From here the Naziswere planning late in the Second World War to launch V2 rockets on London in a lastattempt to turn the tide of war back in their favour. The rockets were to rain down oninnocent civilians round the clock night and day. Fortunately the Germans were driven outof that part of France only days before the plans came to fruition. The scientists and therocket technology developed there and in other sites were used after the war by the Alliesand their work led directly to the Saturn V Rocket which put the first men on the Moon in1969.
In June, I spent an afternoon at La Coupole, which is now a museum and a very moving
memorial to all the people of the northern departments of France who suffered terribly
during the German Occupation and especially to those who were deported and murdered
in the concentration camps. The walls of a quiet corner are lined with the photos of men,
women and children. A chilling video gives an account of the system of concentration
camps from 1933 when the Nazis came to power to their horrific end in the Holocaust.
On 14th
August we celebrate the feast of St Maximilian Kolbe, the Franciscan missionarypriest from Poland who was put to death in Auschwitz in 1941. He took the place ofanother man who had been selected with nine others to be starved to death because threeprisoners had disappeared from the camp. This man cried out that he had a wife andchildren and the Catholic priest stepped forward to take his place. In the undergroundstarvation cell St Maximilian helped the other men as they died until at last he was put todeath with a lethal injection of carbolic acid. Thirty years ago, Pope John Paul II canonisedhim as a martyr of charity. Jesus said: “A man can have no greater love than to lay downhis life for his friends” (John 15: 13).
