Just for Fun! - St. Valentines Day

Back to Page 1

About 1 billion Valentine’s Day

cards are exchanged each year.

This makes it the second largest

seasonal card sending time of the

year

If you’re single don’t despair. You

can celebrate Singles Awareness

Day (SAD) instead. Meant as an

alternative to Valentine’s Day, the

holiday is for single people to

celebrate or to commiserate in

their single status.

You could pop over to Finland

where Valentine’s Day is called

Ystävänpäivä, which translates

into “Friend’s day”. It's more about

remembering your buddies than

your loved ones.

In 1537, England's

King Henry VII offi-

cially declared

Feb. 14 the holiday

of St. Valentine's

Day.

Physicians of the 1800s commonly

advised their patients to eat

chocolate to calm their pining for

lost love. Richard Cadbury pro-

duced the first box of chocolates

for this holiday in the late 1800s.

More than 35 million heart-shaped

boxes of chocolate will be sold.

Over $1 billion worth of chocolate

is purchased on this romantic day

in the U.S.

73 percent of people who buy flow-

ers on this day are men, while only

27 percent are women. 15 per-

cent of U.S. women send them-

selves

flowers on

Valen-

tine's Day.

The red

rose was

the favorite flower of Venus, the

Roman goddess of love. 189 mil-

lion stems of roses are sold in the

U.S. on this day.

Teachers will receive the most

Valentine's Day

cards, followed by

children, mothers,

wives, sweethearts

and pets. Women

purchase approxi-

mately 85 percent

of all gifts on this holiday.

Valentine’s day is celebrated

every year. But do you know

where Valentine’s day came from?

How it became so popular? Was it

always about love and good feel-

ings? From its bloody origins to its

sweet, chocolaty modern day

traditions, here are interesting

facts you didn’t know about St.

Valentine’s Day.

The most

popular

theory

about

Valen-

tine's Day's origin is that Emperor

Claudius II didn't want Roman men

to marry during wartime. Bishop

Valentine went against his wishes

and performed secret weddings.

For this, Valentine was jailed and

executed. While in jail he wrote a

note to the jailor's daughter

signing it "from your Valentine".

In Victorian

times it was

considered

bad luck to

sign a Valentine’s Day card.

Based on re-

tail statistics,

about 3 per

cent of pet

owners will

give gifts to

their pets on this day.

burgh. Many companies are test-

ing these cars on the road.

Ford, plans to release a fully

autonomous vehicle by 2021.

BMW says the same thing. Audi

wants to debut one by 2020;

Volkswagen, by 2019. Like ob-

jects in your passenger-side mir-

ror, the future may in fact be

closer than it appears.

Will they soon become availa-

ble to buy? Well, that’s what

could take a little longer. Some

roadblocks between here and

widespread adoption:

Regulatory; Fifty different states

with little or no regulations as of

yet.

Insurance; 2 driverless cars

crash; who is at fault?

Dear Editor,

I hear self-driving cars may be availa-ble soon. This

seems nuts to me. My Galaxy smartphone can't even do voice recognition properly, and we're banking that a car by Google or Uber will be able to drive itself safely in the complexity of city traffic??

- Fear of No Driver

Dear Fear,

They’re here now. As of

March, 27 developers were oper-

ating a total of 180 autonomous

cars on California highways. Will

we see them in cities? Uber’s

been testing its cars in Pitts-

Fear; recent survey: 78% are

afraid of driverless cars.

Turnover; We hold on to our cars

for more than 10 years.

‘For there to be consumer ac-ceptance of these vehicles, they have to be virtually perfect,” -

David Strickland, Former Direc-

tor of the National Highway Traf-

fic Safety Administration

(NHTSA), In other words, we’re

not dealing with technological

problems as much as problems

with human behavior; suggesting

we may yet have a while to wait.
