MISSIONARY SOCIETY OF ST. PAUL APPEAL NEXT WEEKENDOur church is missionary by nature. Each of us as baptized Catholics are called to share in the work of evangelization. The diocese of Portland collaborates with mission groups every year to raise fund for their missions through a program called the Missionary Cooperative Plan. The group assigned to our parish this year is the Missionary Society of St. Paul. Fr. Joseph Ibiwoye, MSP and Fr. Nduka Uzor, MSP will be speaking to us next weekend, July 13-14. There will be a second collection to support them in their work.

The Missionary Society of St. Paul (MSP) is a congregation of priests founded in Nigeria in 1977. The Society now has 268 priests. They are working in eleven countries of Africa, (South Africa, Malawi, Botswana, Cameroon, Liberia, Chad, Central African Republic, The Gambia, Nigeria, Kenya and Southern Sudan), Grenada in the West Indies, the United States, England, Sweden and Ireland. They also have about 134 seminarians in their seminary in Nigeria.

Their mission in Malawi provides rehabilitation and support for over 360 orphans who lost their parents due to AIDS. They need our financial assistance to continue this mission. They also need funds to: 1) provide fresh water wells, and education in rural communities of Chad, Malawi, South Sudan, Kenya and Nigeria; 2) Sponsoring seminarians, our future priests; 3) Supporting priests in the founding/building of new churches. Your support to this worthy cause will be an immense encouragement to the Missionary Society of St. Paul to as they continue to take the good news to those desperately in need of it. May God bless you! Find out more about them on www.mspfathers.org.

HAITIOur Parish continues to support Haitian communities, including the Parish of Sacre-Coeur de Meyer & its Parish Center at Cyvadier where four Sisters live & work. The third part of our project is a school feeding program in the mountain area of Marbial. In Meyer, the church community celebrated the June Feast Day for the Sacred Heart with church events, processions & also distribution of food to local families. We know from experience that the annual feast day each June is the largest church event of the year when processions & liturgies over several days prepare parishioners over for the celebration. With ongoing political uncertainty in the country, a feast day celebration can offer encouragement to local people. Our parish is able to offer assistance with the Haiti door collection. It takes place this weekend, July 6-7. Your support is appreciated. (Pictured below: Sr. Alba Esther Peña, Sr. Melania Altagracia Mejía, Sr. María Margarita Vásquez, Dominicans and Sr. Marcelina Zagré, African.)

Dear Parishioners,I am honored to have been named the new pastor of Parish of the Holy Eucharist and am looking forward to beginning my ministry with you. A quick review of my biographical information: I was ordained a priest in 1988 and have served from St. Francis to Sanford and from Rockland to Rumford. I love being a priest and the variety of interactions that flow from ministry. I have served in five Catholic schools, three campus ministries, the Maine State Prison, two fire departments as a chaplain, as well as ten years as the State Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus. I love preaching and teaching, though I lack my predecessor’s technological gifts. I am grateful to Fr. Dan and the parish staff for including me in a process of transition. There is a great amount of ministry being accomplished in the name of Jesus, and I hope to be a faithful steward to that repository of blessing. I am the eldest of five boys and grew up in South Portland. My parents are both alive, though dad suffers from dementia and is in a local nursing home. Three of my brothers still live in SoPo, while Joe is in Shanghai. I am fifty percent Irish and fifty percent Italian, and intensely proud of both heritages. In my free time, I enjoy listening to all types of music and reading a wide genre of books, though I have given many away because they are increasingly heavy to move. I love playing golf, hitting enough good shots to keep me coming back and enough bad ones to keep my confessor in prayer. I am passionate in support of the sports teams of the University of Notre Dame and the Bruins, Patriots and Red Sox. The Celtics will have to re-earn my respect. I am anxious to learn more about each of our communities of faith and how they strengthen the entire parish. I used to be good at learning names, but that was before turning 57 and having a three week rotation between churches. Please be patient with me and I pledge to keep you in my daily prayers. --Fr. Phil

HELPING ASYLUM SEEKERS IN PORTLANDIn recent weeks, the Parish has provided financial support to the asylum group in Portland. This has been accomplished through Catholic Charities of Portland. Daily news accounts have reported on these May-June arrivals. Through Catholic Charities, our financial support is being used to provide translators and assistance for processing the new people -- many who fled the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola. Our Parish website has information on the situation, including the process for donating money. In addition, the Catholic Charities website has an explanation of the process for entering the US as a refugee, immigrant or asylum seeker: www.ccmaine.org/refugee-immigration-services/faqs

“The disciples go forth with a buddy, in Jesus’ name.”Do I have a spiritual buddy?”

In the Gospel, Jesus sends out 72 disciples, in pairs, as a sign of his intention to reach the entire world with the good news about himself. If people welcome the disciples, the 72 are to act as gracious guests. They should be polite, not seek special favors, and stay as long as the people want to hear about their teachings and see healings, in the name of Jesus. After their work has taken root, they are to go quickly to the next place, without wasting any precious time along the way. And, very importantly, the disciples are not to fret and worry about those people who reject them or make fun of them and their message. They are to concentrate on those who are ready for it. GREAT ADVICE! We use the “buddy system”; we move on and don’t take things so personally when our message is not accepted; we trust that God will make things right in the end. WE PRAY: “Shout joyfully to God, all the earth; sing of his glorious name; give him glorious praise. Say to God, How awesome your deeds!” (Psalm 66:2-3)WE TALK: Have I ever tried to talk about my faith in God and gotten rejected? What happened? How did this experience feel? Is it hard when some in our family or among our friends does not believe what we believe? Does God ask us to keep loving them without judging them, since LOVE is his greatest commandment? Which buddy of mine can I count on to help me in my life? Which person in my life is open to hearing my love for God and my way of life as a Christian?WE ACT: I will think of who I could ask to be my spiritual buddy: someone I can talk with about faith; someone who will pray for me and whom I can pray for; someone who will meet me at Mass so we can worship together.Go to pothe.formed.org to register for a FREE digital subscription.

Awakening Faith – Reconnect w/ Your Catholic Faith Awakening Faith Prayer: Loving God, create in us an ever-growing faith, with hearts open and centered in you. Awaken within us the fire of your Spirit, so that your love may fill us more fully, and flow throughout our lives. Increase within us a desire to reach out, to invite and to share, to welcome and accept. Awaken the faith of all your children, especially those who have grown distant from you, those ready to hear an invitation to the love you alone can bring. Awaken us, loving God, to see the fullness of your grace and peace. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Contact Kim in our office for more info. (847.6890)

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOUP KITCHENWe continue to need clean, used practicalclothing for men & women. Signs at Sacred Heart and Holy Martyrs can help you know what is or is not suitable. Donations are then sorted, sized out and given to our clients each Friday. The soup kitchen can always use more volunteers to prepare, serve & clean up each day. Choose the days and hours you are available. For more info call Evelyn (899.1784)

HAVE A MASS SAID FOR A LOVED ONEWhen we face the death of someone, even a person who is not Catholic, to have a Mass offered for the repose of their soul and to offer our prayers are more beneficial and comforting than any other sympathy card or bouquet of flowers. To have a Mass offered on the occasion of a birthday, anniversary or special need is appropriate, beneficial and appreciated. To schedule a Mass intention for a deceased loved one or a special intention, fill out one of the envelopes located in the Narthex of each church. Drop it in the offertory or deliver to the parish office. Or contact Joe at the Parish Office (553.9075) to schedule a Mass Intention. Cards for mailing are available at the office.
