I’m pleased to announce that we will have our annual FLU SHOT CLINIC during and following our Parish Pancake Breakfast, October 29th”. There was some question whether we would have the serum in time. I’ve been informed that it’s a “GO” so mark your calendar, 9:00 am until 1:45 pm. The past three years we have run out of serum around noontime. Come early, enjoy a great breakfast and get your shot. As before, shots are $5.00 those on Medicare can have them bill it. That Sunday also happens to be Corporate Communion Sunday. Let’s have a large attendance. At the 9:30 am Mass, the right front main pews will be roped off for us to gather together. Bring your family and let’s fill that section to celebrate with St. Raphael Parish and be recognized as the Knights of Columbus, Council 5300. Menu for the Breakfast: Eggs, sausage, pancakes and a choice of apple, cranberry, or orange juice. Also applesauce or fruit cocktail, coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. Program Directors ReportBy Michael Donovan, Deputy Grand Knight

To help the Council as a service organization, the Knights put out a publication called Surge…With Service. It offers guidelines in helping the Service Program Directors: Church, Council, Community, Family, Youth andPro-Life, to work with the Officers in planning programs for the fraternal year. The publication lists a numberof events under each Service Program that can be utilized based on the needs of our Council. The Council ofcourse can add activities not in the publication that can be of benefit to the community. Also in the publicationare a number of awards that the Council can earn. There are guidelines and forms available to help earn theseawards. The Membership Director and his committees also use Surge…With Service for Recruitment,Retention, and Insurance Promotion. Surge…With Service help our Program Directors to give us activities that can fulfill our Catholic duties forthe benefit of others and ourselves. For our service programs to work, participation and support must comefrom all members of the Council.

As you can see by the October calendar, we have many activities planned. Please plan to attend as many as youcan.

Rev. Msgr. Stephen N. Downes

October is the month of the Holy Rosary and an opportunity for us to rediscover this beautiful Catholic prayer and its place in our spiritual life as Knights of Columbus. At the First Degree ceremonies on September 11th, our new members each received a Rosary as a special gift from Supreme Council and I was very happy to see Fr. Sabas and the other new members cherishing this gift afterwards.

The Rosary is a beautiful and simple prayer we can say each day with great love for Jesus and his Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary. As we say the Our Father and Hail Mary over and over, we reflect in prayer on Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious events in the life of Mary and her Son, Jesus. The joys, the sorrows, the glorious times in Mary’s life and the life of Jesus are very special and important for our salvation and the salvation of all. Yet our joys, sorrows, and glorious times can be seen as an echo or ~reflection in some way of what we see in Jesus and Mary. The joy of birth and childhood; the sorrow and anguish we all face in life and death; our faith

Three new Members Join KOC,

Written by Frank Castelo for Bernie JochumI am writing this article for Bernie who was out of town on vacation. We conducted a first degree at our regular monthly business meeting that we held September 11th. The new members are: Ted Osborne, our editor, Chris Arnoult, and Father Sabas. Our District Deputy, Marty Morozowsky was on hand to see our new first-degree team in action for the first time since Bernie assembled the team. Brother Joseph Lima was awarded honorary membership for his 25 years as a member of the Knights also, congratulations Joe. The first degree team consists of: Tom Puerling-Grand Knight, Jack Turney-DGK, Sam Alfano-Chancellor, Ken Devore-Warden, Jim Wasil-Banner Bearer, Tom Cordeiro and Jose Meza-Outside Guards, Frank Grant-Inside guard, and William McNamara-Financial Secretary. We also have several prospective members ready to join us so I will ask Bernie to have another First degree at our October meeting. Please plan on attending, these ceremonies as they are very special and will provide an opportunity to get acquainted with the new members and to show your support.

A Pro-Life Messageby Paul Curzan

Have you ever heard someone make this statement? "The belief that life begins at conception/fertilization is a religious tenet not shared by all. You should not force your religious views on others. How do we respond to this?

Well, first of all, "When does life begin?" is a trick question. Life does not begin. Life is a process; it began on earth once and has continued ever since. The real question is "when does the life of an individual human being begin," e.g. yours? At what point did the chain of continuing life pass from the previous generation to you? The answer is fertilization. Your existence can be taken back to that moment in time when your mother's egg and your father's sperm united. At that moment you came into physical existence and you have existed ever since. At the moment of fertilization you existed; a moment before you did not.

PLEASE SUPPORT THE MENTAL RETARDATION PROGRAMANNUAL FUND RAISING DRIVE OCTOBER 20-22, 2000

This will be the 13th year for the Knights of Columbus Drive to benefit the Mentally Retarded. During that time over FIVE MILLION DOLLARS has been collected and distributed to local community organizations. Last year our Council placed number 27th in the State with a collection of $4783. The proceeds were donated to the Santa Barbara Special Olympics. Please help where you can. Volunteer to contribute a few hours of your time to accept contributions at many of our local businesses and/or make a contribution if you are able to do so. Participation in the campaign is not limited to the Knights and their families. If you know of others who would like to assist, please notify Joe Darga, Chairman, Tom Turner, or one of the Area Captains. A few hours of your volunteer work will be appreciated by the other Volunteers and will greatly help those individuals in need. Thanks for your participation.Dale Wenzinger, PGK

October 2000, Knightline 5300, Page 5Bill and Elaine McNamaraFamily of the Month

Written by Frank Castelo, Grand Knight

I chose Bill and Elaine McNamara as the Family of the month for August. As our financial Secretary beginning this Columbian year, Bill has taken on quite a job. He has a hard act to follow with Ralph Wengler having served this Council for the last 12 years. (See march issue Family of the Month). But Bill is just the guy that can do it. Dale Wenzinger, PGK, voted Bill as Knight of the Month last April. Bill is a Past Grand Knight (1990-1991), and in keeping with our Columbian traditions for Grand Knights, has filled many positions with the Knights over the years. Bill has been a great help to me as an advisor on numerous occasions, and I’m sure will continue to provide me and the rest of our brothers with help and advice so we can keep on the right track financially and otherwise. Bill is well organized and has utilized his computer skills (Bill has electrical engineering degrees from MIT, and also holds a PHD) to modernize the council financial records which even the state officers have asked for his advice with the new KOC financial software. Bill is always willing to help others. Bill and Elaine moved to Santa Barbara from New England in 1966 with their infant son. Since then, they’ve had two daughters. They now have two granddaughters and one grandson. Elaine has been employed by the Santa Barbara Medical Foundation Clinic since 1976. In 1989-1990, she served as the director of the Santa Barbara Pregnancy Counseling Center. She has been a special Eucharistic Minister at Saint Raphael’s since 1991, and has also been the Coordinator for the Eucharistic Ministers at Saint Raphael’s Church since 1993. Congratulations Bill and Elaine, we are proud and grateful to have the two of you in our Council.

Tom PuerlingKnight of the Month

Written by Frank Castelo, Grand Knight

As most of you know, theirs a long list all the things Tom has done for the Knights and Saint Raphael’s Parish, more than I can list in the space I have in this article. Tom is a past Grand Knight (1997-1998), He and his wife Patricia were Family of the month in March this year, Tom is a Eucharistic Minister at the 9:30 Mass, He is a Trustee of our Council, and the Grand Knight of our First degree team. Tom started the parish breakfasts and Lenten Fish Fry’s during his term, and has been running the breakfasts ever since. Tom joined us in November 1988 and has been a member of the 4th Degree since January of 1993. He has helped the parish out many times with his plumbing skills and provided the plumbing installation to our baptismal font at no charge back in 1991.Tom was instrumental in motivating me to join the Knights in 1995. Tom is always very helpful and willing to help out his brother Knights with ideas and great advice from his experience on from all the positions that he has held over the years. He always attends meetings and is the perfect example of what I feel is the ideal Knight, practical Catholic gentleman, and a heck of a nice guy with great sense of humor that I have always enjoyed. Thank you Tom, and God bless you.

and hope in the resurrection of Jesus and our own resurrection at the end; our openness to the Holy Spirit following the example of Mary — in these and other ways we can see the loving hand of God in our lives as we open ourselves to Jesus and follow the example of Mary in prayer and in life.

We can pray the Rosary as a family or individually at home; or at Church; or walking early in the morning or in the evening; or safely and carefully driving down the highway; or in the middle of a sleepless night; or in our own special place of quiet and prayer. The Rosary is also a prayer we can say out of love for someone special in our life or in time of special need. October is a welcome reminder to pray the beautiful prayer of the Rosary.

It probably sounds redundant to keep saying this but I can’t emphasize enough how much a difference it makes if each member got someone to join. As an example, when I asked Frank Laing to join, he was pleased to have been asked. I asked Frank because I knew him from speaking to him at Church and I knew he was Eucharistic Minister, Jesse Ponce happened to be standing nearby and offered a form 100 which he signed right away. So there is a good idea, bring a form 100 with you to church and ask a Eucharistic Minister to join.

You’ll find lots of interesting articles in the Knightline, and I’ve been getting ideas and suggestions from others. For example, Tom Puerling suggested a box dinner social (see article) and Frank Mackey will be letting us know about a Laughlin trip later next year. Please let me know if you can help with events or activities, I don’t know what everybody’s favorite activities are, and If you let me know, I’m sure we can make use of your talents and have some fun.

A Pro-Life Messageby Paul Curzan

Continued from Page 3 Is our knowledge of eggs and sperm and fertilization based on the Bible? Of course not! These facts were verified by scientific research many centuries after the Bible was written.

There is no religious creed which states: "The life of ahuman being starts at fertilization, when the father's sperm unites with the mother's egg." This observation would be found in a biology textbook. The reason is simple. This is not a matter of faith; rather, it is a scientific fact.

It is a biological fact that the life of a human being begins at conception. Calling this a "religious belief" is calling biology a religion. The Catholic Church teaches that an individual human life begins at the moment of conception, but this is based on scientific fact, not a religious creed. Religion and morality do not determine the scientific reality of when a human being physically exists. Rather, religion and morality have a great deal to say about how, given their physical existence, human beings are to be treated (e.g. feed the poor, defend the weak, etc.)

As in the past, the Knights sponsored the tri-tip sandwich booth, the beer booth, the nacho booth and the "Keep Christ in Christmas" booth.Future projects for our committee will include theSilent Retreat in the spring of 2001 handled by JesseGarcia, the Cleric Appreciation Dinner on January 31st. led by Scott Rothdeutsch, the Poor Clares prayer sessions coordinated by John Soria and the "Keep Christ in Christmas" card project led by myself and Mike Donovan. We will be needing volunteers to help us sell the cards after all Masses on Oct. 29th.

A Message from the 4th Degree Knights Of ColumbusEdmund Page, Faithful Navigator

Many of the newer Knights that have joined the Order in the last few years may not know of the Chalice Fund, that the 4th Degree maintains for it's members. In essence, when a 4th Degree member dies, a Chalice is presented to the deceased Knights family, which is then donated in his honor to a needy priest, who through dire economic circumstances, may not be able to afford one. These Chalices may be presented to worthy recipients anywhere in the world. Each chalice is engraved with the honored deceased Knights name. Every time this priest says a Mass and uses this Chalice what better form of remembrance can there be than this gesture of sacred sacrifice. A short while ago, on his visit to Africa, it was the pleasure of our Faithful Friar, Father Charles Hofschulte to present three Chalices sponsored by our Assembly, to needy priests in the Congo. This is written with the thought to inform First, Second and Third Degree Knights as they aspire to advancement to the FourthDegree, so that they may be aware of this additional benefit of joining our Assembly.

On Monday, Aug. 28~ wt held our monthly Council Dinner Social at the Parish Hall. A good time was had by all as friendship and fellowship were enjoyed by approx. 60+ lively council members in attendance.

This months dinner followed a Polynesian theme starting with flowered tables decorated by Julie Sanchez, Florence Wenzinger, Adeline Bunke and Joe Ponce. Joe Lima & Elanor Paulazzo started the spirits flying with their famous Mai Tais and mixologist Felix Sanchez provided plenty of high quality support. Dinner was swiftly served by the trio of Patricia Cordero, Evelina Curzan & Donna Terpening.

The dinner featured “Bali Hal Chicken” ; a tender teriyaki-ginger chicken breast topped with a light, delicious black bean-mango salsa. The entr6e was accompanied by an island salad with an orange-honey dijonnaise, Polynesian rice with roasted pineapple and sesame seeds, and a banana-corn muffin. (See “Secret Recipes Revealed’ article) All prepared and served with the help and talents of Chefs; Chris

Terpening, John Vogel and my mentor, Tom Cordero. We received many great comments about this event and we appreciate them all!

A special thank you to Mission Linen for providing the linens for our events as they do add a special touch.

We want to thank you all for attending and of course; we want to invite you to support and attend all of these affairs on a regular basis. Our goal is that these dinners and parties will help to maintain a strong, friendly and fraternal atmosphere among our council members and families. Along with the fun and fellowship that these social dinners promote is the fact that we are trying to make a few dollars. These dollars go on to promote many other Knights of Columbus programs including our pledge of support for the Parish Community Building Fund.., so please talk things up among our council members and their families and join us on Mon., October 23rd

The upcoming September 25th’dinner will feature (or I guess by the time you read this; featured) “Roasted Pork Tenderloin in Spiced Bourbon Sauce” with scalloped mushroom potatoes, sweet potato muffins and a southern spinach salad. On October 23rd we will be serving a wonderful “Beef Stroganoff” made with Coca—Cola accompanied by the Czars’ salad and Russian black bread.

Mark your calendars!

Brothers, we are going to have a Box Dinner Social

Monday, November 27”’. 20006:30 — 7:00 No host cocktail

7:00 Dinner Auction

We did this in November 1997 and everyone enjoyed themselves. Here’s how it works: The ladies make up a dinner for two, in a basket, box or whatever. Be creative, for example tablecloth, candles, wine, china, silver, whatever strikes your fancy. The box dinner is auctioned off and the highest bidder has dinner with the lady who prepared it. The kitchen will be available if needed. If you have any questions call Tom Puerling at 967-0876 and I’ll answer your questions or direct you to someone else that participated last time. We will need an accurate head count to make sure we set up enough tables and chairs and it comes out even. Singles need to have a significant other or someone to make a second. Just for an example, I bid on and won Cathy Wengler’s dinner for two and let me tell you it was “great”. There will be a follow up article in November’s Nightline.
