Council Accommodation Gets Green Light

At its monthly meeting, on the 13th of September, the Indigo Shire Council agreed to develop much needed office accommodation for staff by extending and refur-bishing existing facilities at Yackandandah and Beech-worth. The issue of office accommodation has been under consideration for some years by both the previous Council and the current Council, and various approaches to resolve the lack of suitable working premises have been considered in that time.

The decision to refurbish the existing offices comes after two companies were contracted to conduct funding strategies and feasibility studies into the options available to the shire.

In a news article published in the Border Mail on the 12th of September, Councilor and former Indigo Shire Mayor Bernard Gaffney voiced his concerns that ratepay-ers are not getting their say in a big ticket items the Shire spends their capital on.

Indigo Mayor Cr. Ali Pockley said the Victoria State Government had promised funding of $2 million for capital works over four years and it had been confirmed that this funding could be put towards new Council office accommodation.

The State Government has also committed $4 million over four years for roads and bridges. The funding from the State Government means Council will only have to borrow up to $2.5 million for the office accommodation project

Renowned Saxophone Player to Perform in Yack

Highly regarded and sought after jazz and blues saxophone player and composer, Stephen O’Connell is set to perform for one night only in Yack.

Stephen is a virtuoso saxophoneplayer who has worked with some major jazz perform-ers in Australia and internationally. YCDCo - Supporting Local Groups

Australia’s only community owned petrol station is again thrilled to reward more local community owned projects! After a break of several years, YCDCo is pleased to announce sponsorship for two local community proj-ects. In the past month we have offered $500.00 to the 1st Yackandandah Scouts and to the Yackandandah Kindergarten.

The 1st Yackandandah leaders and Cubs are heading to the Gembrook ‘Cuboree,’ a five-day gather-ing of cubs to share skills, swap ideas, practice camping and to promote the attributes of resilience, teamwork and respect. Good luck to the cubs and their patient leaders! We trust the sponsorship can assist with the costs of the journey. Yackandandah Kindergarten has undertaken a project to update learning resources. In particular, the sponsorship will be used to purchase reading materials to promote early literacy amongst learners. YCDCo is pleased to support this project and acknowledge the life-long importance of strong early literacy.

In both these instances, it is clear many commu-nity members continue to offer countless hours to sup-port activities they believe in. Many thanks to all involved in the Cubs and the Kindergarten. These sponsorships are also a reminder that your choice to shop at YCDCo has tangible community benefits. Indeed, since inception YCDCo has provided in excess of $103,000 in commu-nity sponsorship. So please regularly visit the friendliest fuel and hardware ‘artists’ in Australia and have confi-dence in the knowledge your purchase will contribute to important community projects.

Arts Comp Gets Kids Thinking

Start writing, painting, sewing, sculpting -

capture your 2030 vision

The Indigo 2030 project is starting to get resi-dents thinking big about what the shire could be like in the year 2030.

And there’s a particular excitement among school students as they consider what story they will write or art-work they will do to enter the competitions in the project.Indigo Mayor Cr. Ali Pockley said the 2030 project is im-portant for everyone in the shire, and especially younger people because “they will be living the vision 20 years from now”.

“The short story competition has three sections, grades 3-6, age 12-18 and 18 years and over. Stories must be set in the year 2030 and start with one of the opening lines on the application,” Cr. Pockley said.“I can imagine people having a lot of fun with these open-ing lines. There’s ‘The best summer of my whole life…’, and ‘Grass grew over the bicycle as it rusted in the rack…’ and ‘The school reunion held quite a surprise…’ and ‘The old woman looked familiar, as she turned to me and smiled…’

“There is no limit to people’s imaginations. I can’t wait to see what our residents come up with.”Cr. Pockley said the visual art competition also consisted of different categories – primary school, high school and over 18, with a People’s Choice in each category.

“The artistic talents in Indigo have been on show time after time and we are asking people to illustrate their ideas visually - a drawing, painting, photograph, sculpture or stitched piece of art, any medium,” she said. Entries close for both competitions on 28th of October and creative work will be on exhibition in Yackandandah and Rutherglen later in the year.“ We are also having a series of conversations which community members are helping to organise and run over the coming weeks. We have already had a great response from people as the ‘bush telegraph’ helps to spread the word about this project,” Cr. Pockley said.

Conversations people can join:

• Thursday 1st September, 6 - 8 p.m. at the Rutherglen Memorial Hall.• Friday 2nd September, 10 a.m.-12 noon, Beechworth Neighbourhood Centre• Saturday 3rd September, 2 - 4 p.m. at “The Shed”, behind Yackandandah Shire Offices.• Monday September 5th, 4.30 - 5.30 p.m., Chiltern Senior Citizens Centre.• Tuesday 6th September, 6 - 7 p.m. Environment Group, “The Shed” behind Yackandandah Shire Offices.• Wednesday 7th September, 6.15 - 7.30 p.m., Coulston Park, Tangambalanga.

Please email for more information: [email protected], or check Council’s website www.indigoshire.vic.gov.au.

Yackandandah Primary School student Adam Bullivant is

already putting some thoughts on paper about what he

would like to see in Indigo Shire in the year 2030.

See competition details on page 18.

Business NameYackandandah Museum

Tell us a little about your businessThe Yackandandah Museum, accredited by Museums Australia , Victoria, is owned and operated by the Yacka-ndandah and District Historical Society. The building was built in 1860 for the Bank of Victoria and the cottage – originally slab and shingles, - was an existing building, probably built about 1857. The cottage was moved back from the bullock track of the time, when the new Bank was built. It then became the residence for the bank man-agers and their families. Closed as a bank in 1893, it be-came the business premises and home of Thomas Haig, Tailor, and his family. It was Thomas’s elderly daughter, Isabella, who sold the land, buildings, and some fur-nishings, to the newly formed Yackandandah & District Historical Society. This group was formed in 1969 to save the buildings from demolition. Gradually restoration of each of the buildings happened. A new storage and work-space building was built by the Society in 1996.

Tell us a little about yourselvesWe are a volunteer community group, with a Manage-ment committee elected by Members. Members choose from a variety of tasks which form our business – we have a large stored collection of objects, photographs and information which we use for displays, both perma-nent and temporary, in the Museum. The Museum is open to the public 5 days a week in school term time and 7 days a week in school holidays (Victorian) between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. We provide a research service, chil-dren’s activities, public programs, community displays and we have many local publications. Come and see us and learn about your town and people.

The shop specialises in quilts, French inspired furniture, scented diffuser sets, angel aromatics, jewellery and handbags. I opened the shop because I felt there was nothing like it in the town. I wanted to offer good quality inexpensive and beautiful wares for both the local population and for the tourists.

Tell us a little about youI moved here 8 years ago but my family originally came to Yack over 100 years ago. They were the Meurants. My great uncle, Louis Meurant, was the local stage coach builder and blacksmith. His business was located in what is now Spiritus Gallery in High Street. I absolutely love Yackandandah and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. I invite new customers and welcome back old cus-tomers to see the new shop since our renovation.

Life Stories - Crossing the Generations

For nine weeks in 2010 five Beechworth Sec-ondary College students attended the school for stu-dent Leadership camp at Cape Conran, near Marlo, in Gippsland. As part of their Leadership Program the students (Dylan Harris, Tess Murray, Leah Nankervis, Riana Bridge and Stefanie Tate) participated in a Com-munity Laision Project. The students elected to interview and write up the life stories of some of the residents of Yackandandah’s Yamaroo hostel. With great help from Lifestyle co-ordinator Leonie Bell and her assistant, each student worked with one resident each, sharing stories and experiences.

Recently the project was completed and a morn-ing tea was put on at the hostel to celebrate.

The students found the experience really reward-ing, discovering a great deal about what life was like as far back as the 1930s and 1940s as well as developing a rapport with the Yamaroo residents.

Recharge While ‘On the Go’

People who use an electric scooter or wheelchair to get around can now travel without the fear of being stranded by a flat battery, thanks to Indigo Shire Council’s Scooter Recharge Scheme.

The Scheme offers a number of recharge points for electric scooters or wheelchairs, where people are able to recharge while out and about in the community. The recharge points will be located at the Beechworth Tourist Information Centre, Chiltern IGA, Wahgunyah Newsagency and Java Café in High Street Yackandan-dah. Indigo Shire Councillor Peter Graham will launch the scheme on Monday 15 August at 2:30 p.m. at the Beechworth Visitor Information Centre. “The scheme is self sustaining and is a great step forward for people who have limited mobility. People can now recharge their scooters or electric wheelchairs for free while they are ‘on-the-go’ and out in the community,” Cr. Graham said.

Cr. Graham continues. “We hope that more busi-nesses will come on board in the next few months so the program will become more accessible and people will be able to recharge in local libraries, chemists, doctors’ sur-geries, shopping centres and cafes. The businesses that take part in the scheme will be rewarded by more people using their business while they wait for their wheelchair or electric scooter to recharge,”

The project, which was first launched by Nil-lumbik Council, will be rolled our across Indigo, Towong, Upper Hume and Wodonga Councils shortly.

For more information, please contact Loretta Caunt from Rural Access Upper Hume on 0427 688 248 or email [email protected].

Have Your Say !..........

For those of you who have followed the history of the hospital, you will see that when surgery and maternity stopped in the 1990’s, the hospital has evolved more into an aged care location.

As Yackandandah is not owned by the Govern-ment, public beds will not be provided despite repeated submissions to various Governments for the past 20 years. While the hospital is still functioning, analysis of the past few years shows that the hospital side of the business is bleeding cash. With less than 8% of the bed days filled with local patients, Yackandandah is in effect subsidising Albury Wodonga health. With 100% of the patients now aged over 75, all of the patients would be better suited to a rehabilitation or transition care program. As a result, the hospital is conducting a survey of services offered, health insurance take up, and preferred health services desired within the community. Please call in or ring the hospital and a survey form will be mailed out to you.

Cubs, Community and Cuboree

As 1st Yackandandah Cub Pack approaches the first anniversary of the restoration of scouting in the town, it seems fitting to briefly reflect on the past year.

It would be fair to say that the re-emergence of scouting has provided our youngsters with new and varied opportunities. During the past 12 months the cubs have been able to participate in three outdoor camping adventures, they have learned about camp craft, first aid and the importance of teamwork, whilst enjoying fun and games at their weekly pack meetings. They have been involved in a number of community events and their appearance at the ANZAC day memorial service was greatly appreciated and commented on by veterans as well as many of the town’s citizens. Scouting will surely play its part in developing our children as valued citizens of the future. To cap the year the cubs are to participate in the 2011 Cuboree, a four night, camping extravaganza for three thousand cubs from all over Victoria being held at Gilwell Park, Gembrook 26th-30th September.

Such a rich programme does not occur without a great deal of support and we are indebted to our dedi-cated leaders who give freely of their time to ensure the children have a tremendous experience. We are also greatly appreciative of the support given by community groups and would like, especially, to give our thanks to the Lions Club and YCDCo who provided considerable financial support to enable a full contingent of cubs and leaders to attend the Cuboree. It is worth remembering that when you support these community organisations you enable them, in turn, to support other groups.

Great news! If you are running a business in Yackandandah, a Chamber of Commerce has now been established with the assistance of Jamie Boatwood, the Business Development officer from the Indigo Shire.

Office Bearers are:President: Sally Cheater Vice President: David ClarkSecretary: Kim O’Brien Assistant Secretary: Cheryl WebsterTreasurer: Carolyn Lingham Public Officer: Pauline van Aken

What does the Chamber hope to achieve?

1. To give businesses a voice with the Indigo Shire Coun-cil and other official bodies.2. To create better communication between businesses.3. To create better communication between business and community groups.4. To create better communication and business links with the other towns in the Indigo Shire.5. To promote, celebrate and market Yackandandah busi-nesses, whether they are retail, service focused or home operated.6. To identify educational needs of business operators and assist in providing opportunities for learning.

This list is a summary of what has been raised by the people who make up the chamber now and it is not a static list. The chambers goals will be reflective of the membership and thus the chamber will be what we, the people make it. So what do you want the chamber to achieve? All businesses are welcome to join; the fees are $75.00 a year. There may be additional fees in future depending on what the chamber wishes to achieve. To be a member you must have an ABN and run a business in Yackandandah or immediate surrounds. Chamber meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. at the YCEN on the second Wednesday of the month, excluding December and January.

To enquire about the chamber you can con-tact Sally Cheater or Pauline van Aken at Kinagrow whole food whole living. 14 High St, Yackandandah, 02 60270552, [email protected]

Fire Brigade News

Ultra Light Vehicle

The Yackandandah fire brigade has received ap-proval from District 24 for the purchase of a four-wheel-drive quick-response unit. This will be in the form of a Landcruiser type ve-hicle, which will be fitted with an appropriately sized water tank and pump, as well as the usual flashing lights, radios and sirens. In order to keep the capital expenditure to a reasonable level, a low mileage used vehicle will be purchased. However, to accrue the full purchase price, the brigade will have to seek funding assistance from the community. Keep an eye on your letter box for a request from the fire brigade! All contributions will be greatly ap-preciated.

Escaped burn-offs.

Despite repeated advice on burn-off procedures in previous issues of Yackity Yak, some of these burns are continuing to escape, thus requiring the brigade’s volunteers to attend at short notice. Not only has the brigade often found that VicFire was not notified of the intention to burn, but also that the lack of suitable equipment on-scene by the person who lit the fire, -

- shows a distinct lack of understanding by that person, of potential fire behaviour. It is common sense to have a mobile water tank and pump at the burn in case the impossible occurs, due to a sudden wind gust, or one of many other reasons why a fire takes off. The brigade has several such water carts which are readily loaned to community members. At the risk of boring repetition, this column endeavours to softly advise its readers of the need to treat fire with the respect it deserves. Fire can be a wild and unpredictable animal with a mind of its own, thus requiring maximum preparation and planning when you are proposing to get involved with it. Far better to have excessive equipment and person-nel on hand at a burn-off, than take the ‘she’ll be right’ attitude, and end up with a paddock full of fire trucks and fire-fighters, because adequate precautions were not taken before lighting. Our recent wet Winter has produced significant growth, and as this is starting to dry off, it will burn readily. So, the next time you are going to light a match in that heap of rubbish, ask yourself these three questions:

1. Have I notified VicFire of the burnoff ? 1800 668 5112. Do I have suitable equipment on hand to prevent the fire getting out of control?3. Is extra assistance on-hand to help manage the fire?

Report from

Rowdy Flat Track Association Inc.Rowdy Flat Track Project

Our committee became concerned that the petition containing 432 signatures of Yackandandah folk handed to the Mayor and Councillors of Indigo Shire last December 2010 appeared to have evoked no action by Indigo Shire to advance this project, and as far as we knew the last action taken by the Shire was an applica-tion for funding of it and other tracks in early 2010. This is particularly disappointing in light of reports in the press that in the last month Wangaratta and Alpine Shires have received funding for internal bicycle tracks, despite hav-ing other long distance tracks planned, and Towong Shire was granted $1.35m to build the pedestrian bridge over Lake Hume to which Indigo Shire has contributed fund-ing. Consequently, members of our committee re-cently had a meeting with an Indigo Shire officer at which we suggested that our committee could help by making applications for funding for construction of the track. We were told that the Shire intended to include the Rowdy Flat Track in its application in March 2012 for funding for the Beechworth to Yackandandah track costing about $3 million. However, he provided us with material prepared by the Shire to assist with our applications.

As well, the CEO wrote to us stating that the Shire is “interested in providing an off-road trail link between the existing Murray to Mountains rail trail and the High Country trail” and “it would make good sense that given the Rowdy Flat Track has good support at the community and Council level… that this would form part of any future route”. The CEO goes on to say “Unfortu-nately at this stage I cannot give you an exact time-line on this funding application, however we would certainly like to think that it would be within the next 12 months…”

We believe that the Rowdy Flat Track is not a rail trail project, but is exclusive and intimate to Yackandan-dah and its environs, providing a resource for that popu-lation, that the project has been ready to go now for two years and by attaching it to the larger projects it would likely delay the project for further years. If it was built now we could have the pleasure of using the track while other projects were prepared.

As a result of our applications for funding we have had an initial instructive meeting with an officer from Regional Development Victoria and will be following the guidelines he provided. It may also help if you all spoke to our Councillors.

In the meantime, we will have to keep the rough track open along the creek used by walkers and horse riders between Yackandandah and the sewerage farm where it enters Rowdy Flat. Most members of our com-mittee are “elderly”. We have a small amount of money and we could ask for assistance from the landmate teams. As well, local volunteers have already started work in there. Should you be able to help with on-going work would you please telephone Noelene Young on 6027 0607 or email [email protected].

Trial of Green Waste Extended

A recent trial of approximately 600 houses

across Indigo, Wodonga and Towong Shires to divert

organic waste from landfill and reduce greenhouse gas

emissions has been extended.

The trial is run by Cleanaway, who is contracted

by Indigo Shire Council to collect waste. It began at

Easter and was due to run for 16 weeks, but has been

extended and will now finish on Friday 11 November

2011.

Indigo Shire Council Mayor Cr. Ali Pockley said

that the extension of the trial is a positive sign. “So far,

the trial has seen a significant diversion of waste from

landfill. During the trial people are encouraged to use

their green bin for kitchen waste such as meat and food

scraps. The green bin is collected weekly, rather than

fortnightly, and the waste is then turned into nutrient-rich

compost,”

The trial aims to emphasise organics waste

disposal. Approximately 50% of all waste in the general

rubbish bin is organic and could be managed so that it

does not find itself in landfill.

During the trial, organic waste is collected weekly

and general waste and recycling is collected fortnightly.

At the end of the trial, households involved will be asked

to complete a survey to give feedback to help Council

and Cleanaway with waste management in the future.

For more information or feedback, please con-

tact the Cleanaway office in Wodonga at any stage of

the trial on 02 6024 4590 or email Wodonga@clean-

Yackandandah Primary School News

On the back of winning national awards for archi-tectural and sustainable design, Yackandandah Primary School is now kicking goals with its data. Our Year 3 NAPLAN data is out of this world, especially in the key areas of reading, writing and math. Similarly, our Year 5 NAPLAN data shows improvement compared to this time last year, especially in the areas of math and spelling.

What more could you want? Well how about improved Staff Opinion data?

We have that too. Oh, and let’s not forget the Attitudes to School data (which is all about what the kids think about the school). In all areas our students rank our school at or well above the 50th percentile, espe-cially in the areas of school connectedness, student morale, classroom behaviour and student safety. From the school’s point of view this data is very heartening and goes a long way in supporting our vision for a better education for today’s generation of learners.

Many people have held reservations about the new school and have been challenged by the fact that in some ways it is different to the education they expe-rienced as a child. The recent data, however, suggests we are getting it right. This is not to say that there aren’t areas for improvement – there always are. But it does suggest that our vision for a better way of teaching and learning is well and truly justified.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those parents and community members who have supported the school throughout the building and transition process and have been prepared to let us get on with teaching the kids in the best way we know how.

In other school news, many students have ex-perienced success on a sporting front. Ben Zwar, Elvie Rooney, Bevan Gray and Adam Bullivant competed in Division 4 Alpine Giant Slalom at the Victorian Inter-schools Snowsports Championships at Mount Buller. This is the first time we have entered a team in this event and demonstrates yet again the ‘extra’ opportunities many students from our school receive to showcase their skill and learning.

Thanks to Myron Bullivant for co-ordinating our involvement in the event. The results were fantastic. For our first crack at the Interschools, Yackandandah Primary finished 19th out of 34 schools to enter.

Most tellingly, however, we were the first State School listed in the rankings! Seeing that there was every Grammar school in Victoria present, plus the likes of Scotch, Haileybury and so on, we did extremely well considering the deep pockets, expensive gear and huge investment these schools make in order to compete.

Our Hockey 7s girls continued their quest for world domination, falling just short in the competition held in Melbourne. The girls really surpassed all expectations to finish second overall. This is an unbelievable achieve-ment for this group of girls and reflects how talented they are. Congratulations to Sophie Lauritz, Sophie Fraser, El-lie Sidoti, Maggie Kaye-Simmons, Lara Paull, Evie Gray, Isobel Rootsey, Charlotte Fraser, Hannah Paull and Eden Young on making it this far. Special thanks to Louise Kaye-Smith, Jane Ledger and Michael Paull for their sup-port of this group.

The transition process has begun for our Year 6s and prospective students from the kindergarten. Ap-proximately two-thirds of our Year 6 students attended the transition day to Beechworth Secondary College to continue their familiarisation of high school. We expect 21 students to graduate at the end of the year. And so, it’s out with the old and in with the new!

Recently 24 kindergarten students attended our school to begin their familiarisation with primary school-ing. They had a great time in the new learning spaces and enjoyed reading on the computers, doing maths in the multipurpose room, and playing sport with the Year 5s. If parents would like any further information about the school I encourage them to visit our website at www.yackaps.vic.edu.au or to call 02 60271431 to organise a tour of the new spaces.

And finally, the Yackandandah Billy Cart Race is just around the corner. With holidays upon us and the weather fining up, it is the perfect time to start preparing your cart for the event. This year’s race will be held on Sunday, November 6.

OPEN DOOR ON OVEN

IN OCTOBER

The wood fired oven recently built at the Yacka-ndandah Primary School will be open to the public for community use in October, when two groups come together to stage concurrent community food events.

Saturday October 29th will see the launch of the first Community Meal and Veggie Swap. The new oven will be fired in the morning, ready for any community members to bring along breads, vegetables, meats and sweets to be baked and shared in a communal lunch set-ting. Local gardeners will also be gathering to exchange the excess produce of their backyard fruit trees and veg-gie patches for something else they need.

Organiser of the Community Meal, Steve Mc-Innes says that food is the easiest way to bring people together. “Sharing something you have made is the best way to get to know your neighbour, or someone from the other side of town whom you may not ever have the op-portunity to meet.”

The team behind the veggie swap agree. “The swap is as much about turning your left over lemons into asparagus, as it is about meeting other gardeners and exchanging tips, ideas and recipes,” says Lee-Anne Benson, one of the Veggie Swap’s organisers.

“Both projects are about building social cohe-sion and local food security, so it made sense to combine them,” says Michelle Croker. “And the beautiful surrounds and strong and active community make Yackandandah the perfect place for them to take place.”

The Veggie Swap starts at 11 a.m. at the Primary School. The Community Meal will accept food for cooking from 11 a.m. onwards. Both events are free, and commu-nity members are encouraged to attend one, the other, or both!

For further information please contact Indigo Shire’s Community Strengthening Project Officer Chris McGorlick on 1300 365 003, or via [email protected].

Solar North East Project Update

The Solar North East program is a collaborative initiative of Alpine, Benalla, Indigo, Mansfield, Towong, Wangaratta and Wodonga councils and Sustainability Victoria.

The program’s key features include:• Bulk-purchase of solar panels.• Provision of low-interest finance.• Solar Ambassadors to assist resident and businesses assess energy usage.• Potential to bulk-purchase other sustainability initiatives, such as water tanks.• Collaboration with education providers to develop a youth scholarship for sustainability studies.

It’s a busy time for the Solar North East project: applications for the Solar Ambassador positions closed recently, the assessment process for the solar photo-voltaics (PV) supplier is nearly complete and more than 1700 residents and businesses have now registered for the program. It is also great that Indigo Shire has featured very highly in the registration of interest for the project

According to Tim Schilling, the Solar North East Project Manager, they are “…soon to complete the as-sessment process for the solar PV supplier and we will be in a position to make an announcement in late Sep-tember,” “The pricing submitted as part of the solar PV suppliers’ applications has been very competitive and supports recent suggestions that in Australia we are get-ting close to the situation where you can produce your own electricity from a solar system at the same price as buying it from the grid – this is being referred to as ‘grid parity’. It is anticipated the project will facilitate solar PV installations with the capacity to generate over 4000 MWh/per annum of renewable electricity and also im-prove energy efficiency within north east homes and busi-nesses. Yackandandah Club Connection

Spring is in the AirSeptember 2011

Well as the saying goes “Spring has sprung!” Yackandandah Club Connection (previously know as Planned Activity Group or PAG) has also sprung - Into Spring action that is, with more great activities and events for all. Yackandandah Club Connection have been very busy recently with multiple trips throughout the region. Recently, the Club Connection group headed to Corowa, to the Corowa chocolate & whiskey factory. There they participated in a wonderful morning tea of Scones, jam and cream.

“The day was thoroughly enjoyed by and with the participants wanting more”, said Mrs. Jenny Dale, Yacka-ndandah Club Connection Coordinator.

Another unique adventure in recent months was to be fortunate enough to have a “behind the scenes” tour of the new Wodonga Railway station. This experience allowed the participants to see what goes on keeping the trains running through the North East.

A great new program has begun at Yackandan-dah Club Connection each Monday for all those who are active and want to get more active. The “STEP UP PRO-GRAM” incorporates a series of exercises to improve balance, with the aim of preventing falls. “Commencing at 1:30 p.m. each Monday, this program is conducted by a Physiotherapist, from Beechworth Health Service. The people love it and it has really gained a following already”, Mrs. Dale said.

The One Step Ahead Program also includes even more access to professional advice in health and well being, beyond Club Connections monthly podiatry service. A dietitian, has provided advice on dietary needs to maintain strength and well being. Coming up soon, will be a discussion with an Occupational Therapist who will advise on helpful aids throughout the home.

Podiatrist, Karen Eddy, continues to provide professional treatment and advice on the 3rd Monday of each month.

In October, Yackandandah Club Connection celebrates Seniors with a busy schedule of activities across the area in the month. “We will be heading to the Old Time Dance at Yackandandah, A Bush Dance at the Kinross Woolshed in Thurgoona, a visit to an Iris garden in Wodonga and finally the long awaited Scots school play, OKLAHOMA, in Albury”, Mrs. Dale said.

Yackandandah Club Connection meets on Mon-day & Thursday 10 a.m. – 3.30 p.m. at the Senior Citi-zens Hall, and Wednesday at the Yackatoon Village hall, 10am -3.30 p.m. The crew at Club Connection are Jenny Dale, Ann Monshing, Julie Walker.

Club Connection is also always on the look out for Volunteers to assist us with their programs, so if you think you could spare some time they would be delighted to see you.

For further information regarding any of these activities or programs please contact Yackandandah Club Connection Coordinator, Jenny Dale, on 02 6027 1551.

Sustainability Rewarded at Awards Night

Winners of the 2011 Sustainability Awards will be announced on Friday 14th of October by the Indigo Shire Council. The Awards ceremony will be held at the Ruther-glen D.P.I Research Institute, Chiltern Valley Road, Chiltern with guest speaker Dr. Scott Rawlings from the Office of the Commissioner for Environmental Sustain-ability. Mayor Cr. Ali Pockley said the judges have had a tough time. “All of the applicants have been great qual-ity, and it has made judging hard. The Awards are about promoting sustainability in the Community, and encour-aging people to think smart about sustainability. There is not always enough recognition of the wonderful things that people do in our community, and these awards are a great opportunity for people to be recognised and reward-ed for their efforts. Last year’s nominations ranged from sustainable house design and construction to greener business operations and tree planting, and we have seen the same variety this year,” Cr. Pockley said.

This year, the category of ‘Education’ was added to the existing categories of Agriculture, Business, Com-munity and Households.

“We added this category so that schools could be recognised for the work they do for sustainability, and will not have to compete against other applications from busi-nesses and individuals.

And let’s face it, these young people will be in-heriting what we leave behind, so it is up to them to drive their and our collective future together.” Mayor Pockley said. “At Council, we are doing what we can to make the Shire as green as possible. Our Natural Resources Team run a number of projects to promote sustainabil-ity, including developing a Sustainability Toolkit, with four publications aimed to help people build and retrofit existing homes in ways that reduce operating costs and increase their comfort levels,” Cr. Pockley said.

The Sustainability Awards are judged by Coun-cil’s Environment Advisory Committee, which is made up of local experts in their collective fields from across the Shire. The Awards evening will start with a light supper and drinks from 5:30 p.m. Please RSVP by Wednesday 12th of October to Shay Simpson 02 6028 1128 or 1300 365 003. Email - [email protected] .

of Osborne’s Flat Road and a number of other ar-eas just outside of the town. Any witnesses are asked to contact Yackandandah Police on 0459 319 903. Current legislation provides that any person Improperly Using a Motor Vehicle will be charged, they will lose their licence and their vehicle will be impounded for 1 month for a first offence. These burnouts definitely fit the criteria, the irre-sponsible driver is fishtailing across both lanes of traffic, often in areas near blind corners or crests of hills. I have been to two fatal road crashes in the past 12 months where similar dangerous driving resulted in an innocent person dying. Other incidents that have occurred recently include a 25 year old Wodonga male charged for doing burnouts in High Street. A 22 year old Wodonga male and a 23 year old Darwin male have been charged in relation to a serious assault that occurred at the Bottom Pub earlier this year. A 57 year old Yarra Junction male driving in High Street had his Driver Licence cancelled for 10 months after blowing 0.101 on a Breath Test. A 16 year old male has been charged in relation to a seri-ous assault but due to his age, no further details can be given.

Yackandandah Police Station News

Springtime has arrived, the footy season is over and with the warmer weather my busy season begins. There have been a few things happening in town over the colder months that I’d like to bring to your attention.

Over the course of the year some businesses in town have been victims of callous Burglars where prop-erty has been damaged and stolen. The crimes have usually been committed in the small hours of the night and when the weather is stormy. On one occasion we had a police tracker dog attend, but luck was on the side of the criminal and the dog was unable to find his scent.

On the subject of the Burglaries it would be re-miss of me not to mention an exceptional effort by one of our locals who, on hearing one of the businesses being broken into, came running outside his house to try to ap-prehend the perpetrator in the middle of winter dressed in nought but a pair of ‘Y’ fronts.

As a result of the burglaries, I have started an After Hours Register for local businesses so that in case of an emergency I can contact the nominated person(s). If I haven’t been to your business yet I apologise, but for any business who would like to participate, I have left a number of forms at the Yackandandah Post Office.

Recently there have been a number of danger-ous burnouts performed at the intersections both ends

Garden Day – Saturday 22nd October (see page 34)Senior Citizens Hall & Memorial Gardens: Themed “Healthy Gardens, Healthy Life”, our garden day will feature Stephen Ryan of the ABC Gardening Show, along with other special keynote speakers. The event, held as part of the WAW LATIPSOH campaign will be held in conjunction with the Beechworth Health Service. Both a morning and afternoon session is planned, at $10 per session. There will be demonstrations and tips on how to make a worm farm and compost heap, along with how to stay healthy in the garden as you age. Our local primary schools have been given the challenge of creating a mini garden and Stephen Ryan will judge the competition, with the winner being announced on the day. Come along and enjoy a day of fun, information and inspiration! See our separate advert for more info and programme details.

Our Thanks To – the Yackandandah Old Time Dance Group and the Lions Club of Wodonga for their recent generous donations. These donations have enabled us to purchase the first of our new electric beds for the hostel. We are concentrating our fundraising efforts over the next 12 months in replacing old divan beds with more resident and staff friendly electric models, priced at ap-proximately $2000 each.

As I mentioned in the last article, Dementia among older adults is increasing. It can affect individuals in many dif-ferent ways - people can exhibit changes in personality and these sometimes manifest in what is described as “challenging behaviours.” The Yamaroo Lifestyle Depart-ment has been fortunate in winning a “Fellowship” with Time for Dementia” study centre. This Fellowship will enable us to trial a new program based on the use of the Reverie Harp as a non-pharmacological intervention to help manage these behaviours. At the conclusion of the trial we intend to offer the Harp to members of the local community who are living with people suffering dementia to use in their own home.

In addition to the Reverie Harp Program, we are cur-rently attempting to establish a “Support Group” for family members of residents living in the hostel that suffer from dementia. We would welcome carers, family members or friends of people living with Dementia in our local com-munity to join this group. Keep your eye on this spot for further information - information will also be available through local Doctor’s clinics, District Nursing, the YCEN Noticeboard and from the Lifestyle Coordinator at Yama-roo.

Community Health: Don’t forget our allied services- Physiotherapy (provided by Rebecca Stamp), Pathology services (provided by Border Pathology) and Podiatry. Referrals are not necessary unless claiming through Vet-eran’s Affairs. EPC Medicare referrals are accepted. For appointments or any enquiries please contact our administration office on 02-6028 0100.

Watch this space for an update on how our replacement programme is progressing. If you wish to contribute please contact Lisa in the office.

Activities: Spring is here and many of the residents are out in force, trimming, pruning and getting the raised beds prepared for planting. It is so nice to shake off the winter blues. Also the warmer weather is more enticing to outings; in recent times, some residents have taken up the opportunity to go to the Wodonga Plaza shopping, the Wodonga Art Space, and the Murray Conservatorium monthly performance. We are busily preparing for our end of session footy party to be held on the Friday night prior to the Grand final where chicken, seafood & cheese-cake will be on the menu..Winners of the tipping competi-tion will be announced and prizes presented. I dare say a couple of drinks will be had and a sing-a-long of club songs will add to the merriment of the evening.

Oration Marks the End of an Era

The Kerferd Oration held on Sunday 31st of July in the Kerferd Conference Centre at La Trobe Beech-worth saw the end of an era for the University’s Beech-worth campus.

The campus has been closed for several months but the conference centre is being opened especially for the Kerferd Oration. La Trobe at Beechworth is a spon-sor of the Kerferd Oration along with Indigo Shire Council and WAW Credit Union.

This year’s Orator, Justice David Harper AM, a judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria, talked about Sen-tencing: public perceptions, the reality, and their social implications, and referred to research in Britain, Canada and the US which consistently shows that members of the public, when given details of the considerations that go into the sentencing process, are more lenient than judges.

Kerferd Oration committee member Ms. Joan Simms said that four lead-in events in the previous weeks, Community Insights, looked at the issue of sen-tencing from different perspectives and the implications for Beechworth of being a jail town.

“We had over 180 people come to these events and listen to prisoners, police, and prison staff talk about their experiences,” Ms. Simms said.

“It has generated an unprecedented level of discussion, leading in to the Oration this Sunday and has led to many in the community asking what they can do to help in the rehabilitation and reintegration of prisoners once they leave gaol.”

Justice Harper was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his service to law reform, the judiciary, and in the area of international humanitarian law, and to the community through support services for the care and resettlement of offenders and their families.

He has been the president of the of the Victorian Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offend-ers since 1995 and is Chair of the Australian Red Cross (Victorian Division) International Humanitarian Law Com-mittee, and is the president of the Judicial Conference of Australia, which seeks to maintain an independent judiciary.

The annual Kerferd Oration was a free com-munity event supported by WAW Credit Union, La Trobe Beechworth and Indigo Shire Council.

The Oration is named after one of the founding fathers of Beechworth, George Briscoe Kerferd, whose career in public office culminated in his elevation to the office of Victorian Premier in 1874.

Green Light for New Council Offices

....continued from front page.

The development involves demolishing the

front office in Yackandandah and one building in Wellsford Street as well as The Shed meeting room, constructing a new office on the site and refurbish-

ing the heritage-listed Ardsville site fronting High Street. In Beechworth, the existing office space will be extended behind the Memorial Hall.

Factors leading to this decision included:

• Inadequate office space causing inefficiencies • A need for a more efficient and effective workplace • Desire to provide better customer service • Poor conditions of the offices in Yackandandah (Wellsford Street building is past its usable life, Ardesville building needs to be preserved for heritage reasons) • Limited office space for future growth • OH&S non compliance in some of the offices • Escalating maintenance cost of current offices.

It was expected design work would be finalised by May next year, with construction starting soon after that and finishing by May 2013.

Image on opposite page shows plans for Yackan-

dandah Office development.

TWO YACKANDANDAH HOTELSWaterloo Hotel The Waterloo Hotel was on the site of the present Memorial Gardens. It was destroyed by fire in 1915.Arthur Ernest Augustus Mueller was the licensee from 1901 – 1905. A.E. Mueller is not to be confused with Au-gustus Mueller M. D. Arthur was born in 1877 in Prahran, Melbourne to Francis Mueller and Eliza Jane Pleming. The family moved to Yackandandah around 1888 when Arthur was 10 years and five months of age. He attended the Yackandandah State School. At the age of 25 he bought the Waterloo Hotel at Yackandandah in 1901 and sold the hotel in 1906 to James McKay. Sometime in 1906, Arthur then moved to Tatura where he became a baker and married Lillian Cleland at Wangaratta.

Waterloo Hotel 1900

The Bridge Hotel The Bridge Hotel has an interesting history. It was established in 1859 and was situated at Kirby’s Flat, about three miles from Yackandandah near Twist Creek. During the gold rush the population in the area of Twist Creek and Kirby’s Flat was about 3000. Alfred Jervis and his young wife and child left Ad-elaide in 1855 for the goldfields by horse and dray. It was a tragic journey for their cousin Fred Mellyon who was accompanying them. He was killed, speared by aborigi-nes and the baby died through want of nourishment from her mother. They could not find water and Alfred could not leave them to go for help as the aborigines were fol-lowing them.

The father of Mrs. Jervis, also left Adelaide for the goldfields a few months later and travelled to Kirby’s Flat in about 1857-58. A little later he either built or rented the Bridge Hotel. Later the hotel was sold to Jardine, a member of the Bowles family.

For a long period the hotel was run by Mr. Mc-Intyre and his daughter Ethel. When the gold rush slowed down at Kirby’s Flat, the Bridge Hotel was shifted to Yackandandah.. Later, a substantial two story brick build-ing was erected. Ownership of the Bridge Hotel remained in members of the Bowles family from 1872 to 1972, a re-markable achievement. It was then sold to Mr. Storie, and later to Mr. Norman Harber, the license having expired some years ago. Later it was bought by Mel Gibson, a noted actor, and then to the Rogers family.

On The Way to Passing Another Milestone

Hi FolksWhat can I say ... the best scenery is always along the detours! So for us this has meant a few unexpected turns, hurdles and fun ... loads of it!!

Detour #1We shipped the bikes and gear over early, so that it would have cleared customs and be ready for us to col-lect on 19th August ... the same day we arrived ... good plan in theory! To save money, we went with general freight, and had other people’s stuff in the container ... the container failed the xray, and had to be emptied, inspected and reloaded, and then all the associated paperwork. We got the bike finally, one week later and on the same day we were meant to head east to Bonneville ... after spending two and a half days trying to do six days worth of bike prep, we left the “good bike’ (the 250mph chaser), and headed west with our other ‘slow bike’ ... only good for 220mph :-)

Detour #1.1Trailer tire blow out in the middle of Nevada, saw us prac-ticing tyre changing techniques and roadside panel work, as the blow out ripped the mud guard off ... ... eventually arriving at Wendover (the town on the edge of the salt lake) just shy of midnight, having travelled across two States ... all good, as we had only missed tech inspec-tion and one day of racing.

Detour #2The “slow bike” was showing signs of salt gremlins ... the original plan was to send me off to break some records, followed by Greg, then Jim ... .. plan B was enacted when the bike wouldn’t run ... Plan B is identify the problem and solve it ... ... after each pass (which takes about 3-4 hours of waiting) ... we’d have to abort the run due to problems ... Gremlin A was a seized valve in the turbo waste gate .. problem identified and solved, but that saw the end of Monday... the next morning, again on the salt pre-dawn... line up for a pass, and abort the run ... Gremlin B was a salt corroded electrical wire shorting out ...problem identified and solved ... line up for a pass, and abort the run ... fuel pump failure ... problems solved, but the end of racing at 6pm ... ... next morning, and only 1.5 days left ... line up for a pass, and abort the run ... engine mapping breakdown ... ... park the bike ... and become a spectator ... that’s OK, we’re still of the Home of Land Speed Racing, so there’s nothing to complain about ...

Detour #3Americans love us ... they saw our challenges, and a new friend lent us his stock, road registered Suzuki GZXR1350 Hayabusa ... what a terrific person ... 189mph run ...a shakedown to see how it handled .. all good! ... line up for a pass ... ... and the wind picks up ... and up ... and up ... ... wind over 13mph is too dangerous to race in, because the groomed area is only 20m wide and when you’re moving at 100m per second, its very easy to loose the track, and that might not have a happy ending ... ... the wind was 20-40mph by 1pm, and I was only 2 bikes off running again, when Wednesday’s racing was cancelled ... ... that’s racing ... but we still had half day Thursday.

Detour #4189.5mph (303kph) ... with a tail wind ... then 186mph ... and another pass at 186mph ... ... it turns out that the bike manual for the Hayabusa is correct... this bike can only do 300kph ... bugger! ... but fun!!! ... at least we proved the manual to be correct.

Now it’s time to head back to SF, and rebuild 2 broken bikes ... and maybe even finish that 600 we started build-ing while we were waiting for our stuff to clear customs.

An absolutely brilliant week, where plenty happened, some things were fast and some things were challenging ... but all things were good ... ... so I am currently grinning like a Cheshire cat, and looking forward to the next race.

On 11th September, we were in South California at El Mirage on a dirt lake were we are aiming to go 0mph to 200mph in 1mile and then brake hard to stop within a third of a mile, before the lake runs out ... different sort of challenge :-) ... and then we head straight from El Mirage back to Bonneville for a week on land speed racing on the salt ... ... our good bike, and new fairings will see us pushing for 250mph (400k) ... but we’ll settle for any speed that breaks our current records ... you know, like 224mph ... that sort of stuff!!

I’ll send another update and hopefully be able to tell you stories of great success and large numbers on the sunny side of 200 ...

Thank you fabulous friends ... you help make this a great experience to be able to share!

RECENT ACQUISITIONS

Our collection is continually being enhanced by generous donations of information, objects, documents and photographs. Many of these are prompted by writ-ings in our own newsletter or in the Yackity Yak and also by our research customers and displays. We often get letters from our members with extra snippets of informa-tion – in particular from Dorothy Taylor and Bill Priestley - both of whom have many, many tales to tell!

This year to date we have had 105 acquisitions – some of which are: • Collections of writings and research: Ian Touzel’s book of entries in various newspapers about Staghorn/Allan’s Flats; Ronda Shambrook’s research into Hillsborough. • Photographs of the Stephens/Adams family given by Leonie and Peter Adams. • Pub golf trophies and photographs from Pat Beatty. • Oral histories • A 1940’s cigarette packet from under the floor of the old Shire Hall given by Graeme Britton. • Documents and photographs of Reid’s Mill and house. • A hand seed broadcaster used locally and do-nated by Bill Jansen.

A matching pair of gates is to be fitted at the tradesmen’s entrance further up Cemetery Lane, with the work being carried out by Craig King’s Eagle Eye Engineering of Beechworth. The Trust was successful in obtaining a grant for this work, which will assist in keeping rabbits out of the cemetery as well as maintaining a uniformity with the entrance gates.

Conference.A conference for Cemetery Trusts within Indigo Shire has been arranged for October 30th and will be held in The Shed at the Yackandandah Shire offices. A comprehensive agenda has been assembled to facili-tate communication and discussion between Trusts within Indigo Shire. This is the first time such a conference has been planned, and hopefully it will be an on-going event. The planning for this conference has been arranged by Claire Gilmartin of Indigo Shire, which will also provide refreshments. The conference will be chaired by the Indigo Mayor, Cr. Ali Pockley, who has been a great sup-porter of the cemetery.

Web-site.With thanks to Tom Lingham of Lingham Media, the Trust’s web site is now operating. The URL for this is: http://cemetery.yackandandah.comThanks also to Cameron McKern of CCM Software Tech-nologies for making this site address available. As the Trust’s burial records are public property, they will shortly be available for public viewing on the web-site.

Cemetery Walk. The Yackandandah Historical Society will again conduct its popular cemetery walk on Sunday November 6th.

Yackandandah Town Garage Sale - 22nd October

The Yackandandah & District Tourism Association is set to hold its Annual Town Garage Sale day on Saturday 22nd of October. The Town Garage Sale has been extremely successful in the past with over 30 households registering each year, along with various community groups holding their stalls. The Yackandandah Primary School will host stalls for the locals you don’t quite have enough stuff to justify a full blown garage sale or for those who wish to be closer to town.

So here’s the low down on how to get involved and what will be happening on the day. The sale will be held on Saturday 22nd of October from 8 a.m.

Hold Your Own Garage Sale Anyone who lives in our local area can register their garage sale to be part of this huge day. When you register (for a $25 fee) your address and home location will be added to a map which will be available to visitors on the day. One week before the sale you will need to pick up your garage sale signs from Yackandandah Visitor Information Centre. The sign is used on the day of the garage sale to identify your site as a participant in the Yack andandah’s Town Garage Sale. The signs can be placed on your wheelie bin. The signs will need to be returned at the end of the sale day and if it is undamaged you will receive a $10 refund. That means that after the refund it only costs $15 to be part of this great day.

Hold a stall at the Yackandandah Primary School If you live a bit too far out of town or only have a small amount of goodies to clear you can register to have a stall at the school grounds. Stalls will cost $10 to register with all funds going to the school. Stall sizes are limited to approximately 2 metres or 1 trestle table. You will need to bring your own table unless you wish to have your stand at the schools stand, in which case you can book a table on your registration form. There are limited stall sites, so be quick. Stalls are limited to residents with the Yackandandah and surrounding district.

Traders in High Street If you are a trader in High Street, we encourage you to have tables out the front on the day with discon tinued or clearance lines. Not only will this add to the atmosphere but it will encourage people to stop and browse around town while they are here. If you are a food trader, you may wish to say advertise a Bargain Hunters special for the day.

The garage sale will be advertised in the Border Mail and various other publications as well as being included on community notice boards. That means for a small fee your garage sale is bound to attract a lot of people! On the day the Yackandandah Visitor Information Centre will be open from 7:45 a.m. for bargain hunters to come in and grab a map for a gold coin donation. The map will locate all stalls and tell them what kind of goods they are likely to find at each site. You can register by calling into the Yackandandah Visitor Information Centre and complet ing a registration form, or download the registration form online at www.uniqueyackandandah.com.au

Registrations together with payment, must be completed by 21st October. For all enquiries please phone the visitor information centre on (02) 6027 1988.

SO COME ON – CLEAR OUT THE SHED, UNPACK THOSE DUSTY BOXES, REGISTER A SITE AND HAVE SOME FUN WHILST MAKING SOME MONEY!!

BOWLING CLUB

The weather is warming and that means the start to another season of lawn bowls. On September 18 our newest life member, Bob Kelley, rolled the jack and our newest 80 year old, green keeper Ray Melbourne, rolled the first bowl in the traditional opening of the green. As well, we took the opportunity to welcome some new members from the defunct SS&A Wodonga Country – that Club’s unfortunate demise has been our gain.

While winter time is supposed to be our quiet time we have been busy renovating the green in order to further enhance our reputation of having one of the best greens in the North East. As well, we are in the process of repainting the Clubhouse inside and out. And we would like to take the opportunity to thank Indigo Shire (par-ticularly David Koren who is a wonderful supporter of our endeavours) for a grant to replace the Clubhouse carpet. All of these improvements will ensure that we can offer the best of sporting and social facilities for our Yackan-dandah community.

We of course welcome any one who would like to join us for social bowls. We commence Wednesday twilight bowls in the first week of December, and if there is no tournament on Sunday afternoons, the greens are also available for play. Just check the blackboard on the Clubhouse entrance for the latest details.

We will also be continuing our very popular Kleenheat Challenge in early February so watch this space for announcements. The Challenge is open to all folk who want to have a try at the game and compete in a friendly fashion for some big prizes.

See you at the Bowling Cub sometime soon!

Table Tennis Update

A small group of enthusiastic players enjoy a series of social games each Monday from 10:30 a.m. for two hours.

Over the year we have seen considerable improvement in individual player’s skills. John McIntyre impressed the group when he turned up for the first time with his own bat; he has not wiped any player off the table, yet! Some players have received coaching and with further practise Kath McIntosh has demonstrated her scintillating winning forehand.

Our numbers vary each week, but with two tables in action we can accommodate more players to join us in this social activity. Just turn up at the Sports Park- Scout Hall at 10:30 a.m. any Monday or for further enquiry [email protected] or 02 60271284.
