Weekly information from us to you

Wagga Wagga City Council is proposing to fund its share of an upgrade to the flood levee system with a Special Rate Variation (SRV).

Pending the outcome of grant applications for State and Federal Government funding, Council is committed to funding one-third of the cost to upgrade the Main City Levee to a 1-in-100-year level of protection, and the potential upgrade of the North Wagga Levee to a 1-in-20-year level of protection.

Cost estimates by NSW Public Works indicate the upgrades will cost a total of $23.3 million.

Council intends to fund its one-third share of $7.75M with an SRV.

This would be a one-off increase above the rate peg that would stand for five years only.

Under the proposed increase, property owners in the Farmland rate category will pay an additional 1.91 per cent above the rate peg.

Assuming a rate peg of 3 per cent the total increase for Farmland properties would be 4.91 per cent.

All other properties will see an increase of 4.1 per cent above the rate peg. Assuming a rate peg of 3 per cent the total increase for all rateable properties not in the Farmland category would be 7.1 per cent.

Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall said this is an important

infrastructure project. “We need to get moving with this

project to help protect the City of Wagga Wagga and safeguard its future prosperity,” Cr Kendall said.

“If we don’t raise the funds needed with an increase in rates we will have to borrow the money and find a way to pay it back with interest, this will result in reduced services for the community.”

Committee4Wagga is also

throwing its support behind the upgrade.

“Flood security is pivotal to the potential growth required to ensure the commercial and economic viability of our city,” Committee4Wagga CEO Chris Fitzpatrick said.

Members of the community can learn more about the proposed SRV and how it impacts them online at yoursaywagga.com.au/srv.

VOTE IN THE 365 CUPS PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD

The judges have had their say, now it’s your turn!

Following the Waggafest Special Awards Screening Night, the 365 Cups People’s Choice competition has launched.

The film with the most votes will win a $500 prize, which will be announced during Wagga’s Australia Day celebrations.

The 2014 People’s Choice winner was The Enemy Within, which told the tale of former NRL player and champion boxer Joe Williams’ battle with depression.

Head to wagga.nsw.gov.au/waggafest to cast your vote.

Grab the family this weekend and go on an AppVenture.

The smartphone app that connects visitors and locals with attractions around the region was officially launched at Eat Local Thursday on 15 October at the Murrumbidgee Turf Club.

Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Rod Kendall was joined by representatives from Coolamon and Junee shire councils were on hand to celebrate the region-wide partnerships the project has created and thank participants for their support.

“AppVenture makes it easy for both locals and visitors to discover what

to do, see and eat across Wagga, Coolamon, Junee, Griffith, Lockhart and Temora,” Cr Kendall said.

Featuring more than 50 regional attractions and experiences, AppVenture has in excess of 250 active monthly users with coordinators expecting an increase in the app’s uptake following the implementation of a strategic marketing campaign targeting the Canberra, regional NSW and northern Victoria short-breaks markets.

AppVenture is available for both Android and iPhone and helps connect residents and visitors with businesses, events and more across the Riverina.

Compost doctor to prescribe adviceGreen thumbs know

the best way to improve their gardens and lawns is by using compost.

REROC’s Compost Doctor workshops are on in Wagga on Saturday 31 October, with residents able to hear from well-known regional horticulturalist and ABC Radio gardening expert Kerry Geale.

Mr Geale will discuss

the types of bins and facilities that can be used, the benefits of composting, the best locations for compost bins, what can be composted and trouble shooting.

The workshops are aimed at beginners and at experienced composters who are just looking to update their knowledge and skills.

The workshop will be

held at the Sensory Garden, adjacent to the Wagga Wagga Men’s Shed in Ashmont on 31 September from 10am to noon.

Residents who attend a free workshop will go into a draw to win a home composting bin.

A big reminder that tomorrow Sunday 18 October is Graffiti Removal Day.

If you can help by removing any graffiti that is on your property that would be great, let us work toward Wagga Wagga being a graffiti-free city.

I take this opportunity to thank Rotary, the NSW government for organizing this Day, Wagga Wagga Sunrise Rotary Club for their

efforts in working on removal of graffiti from the VRA premises in Bolton Street Wagga and also the Men’s Shed for their help. I should not forget Dulux, Selleys, Smart Graffiti and Brookfields and Inspiration Paints for supplying materials.

If we all help we will win the battle.

Christmas is only a few months away and so is Wagga’s Christmas Spectacular.

This wonderful event is scheduled to be held at the Music Bowl on Sunday 13 December.

This is a free event for all the family and I am sure Santa will also have it in his calendar to be there, so make sure

you also have it in your calendar.

The Army Band Kapooka and a number of wonderful Wagga entertainers are already rehearsing.

I also urge everyone to think about the great residents we have in Wagga who work so hard for others.

Nominations close at 5pm on the 27 November for the 2016 Australia Day Awards.

For further information and nomination forms, please contact the Wagga Wagga City Council or visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/australiaday.

Once again a reminder to all the ladies of Wagga, I hope you will

think seriously about being a Councillor.

Come along to Council meetings during the next 11 months – Local Government Elections will be held in September 2016.

ALAN ELDRIDGEGENERAL MANAGER

This week’s pet is a kelpie-cross (imp 787) called Darling.

She’s bouncing ball of energy who would benefit from a young family to grow up with.

You can adopt Darling from the Glenfield Road Animal Shelter for $323.40. This fee includes microchipping, lifetime registration, first vaccination, desexing and worming.

If you would like to meet Darling or any of his buddies, come down to the shelter from Monday to Saturday between 1pm and 4.15pm.

For more information, contact the shelter on 6971 4651 or visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/animals.

Meet Darling

HANDS ON: Wagga Wagga City Council, CSU Future Moves and dLux collaborated for a one-day program at Wagga’s CSU campus on Wednesday 14 October. The program is particularly tailored towards young women and fosters leadership and role-modeling as well as pathways into further education.

Selected Wagga Wagga dLab participants from Mount Austin High travelled to the university to engage in a series of talks and workshops and to share their dLab project experiences with a short screening of their works.
