Profile of TRF
The Council of New Jersey Grantmakers
The Council of New Jersey Grantmakers (CNJG) Camden Initiative: Camden Funders Affinity Group Camden Funders Peer Network Map Camden Funders Listserve One-Stop Resource Area for Camden on CNJG Website Camden Weekly News Round Up – 2010 to 2012 2012 Survey of Camden Grant Investments
Supported by: the Anne E. Casey Foundation, Campbell Soup Foundation, Wells Fargo Regional Foundation, and William Penn Foundation.
Introduction
TRF was approached by CNJG to: (a) help develop an approach to understanding the spatial distribution and impact of philanthropy in Camden, NJ; and (b) gather data and create tables and maps showing a variety of philanthropy-relevant social, economic and demographic characteristics. CNJG and TRF identified a sample of 35 grants made between 2007 and 2011 for further study. For grant activities that were geographically targeted within Camden, TRF contacted foundations and gathered the requisite information to “geocode” the location of where funded activity was located. The majority of grants were “citywide” in scope; several were limited to selected Census tracts; others supported a “shape” (e.g., “link”). Numerous data elements were gathered, tabulated and, where appropriate (and possible) mapped. Grant activity was superimposed on many of those maps.

Community Development: Takeaways and Areas for further research
Areas with community development activity show greater residential market sales volume and price than other areas of Camden
Can grantmaking more purposefully build on previous grantmaking and other large governmental investment (e.g., NSP 2)?
To what degree will increased residency in community development areas affect targeted need for human and social services like education, child care and public safety?

Health / Food: Takeaways and Further Research Opportunities
FQHCs supplement the hospital health care network in Camden, but cannot cover all the medical need at current capacity.
We observe a significant amount of health-related grantmaking. But to what extent is it addressing the conditions of residents as opposed to medical research? Community Health Needs Assessment?
Food access still an issue in Camden, and closing of Pathmark in south Camden has potential to exacerbate the issue.
TRF researching role institutional buyers can play in increasing share of locally sourced food.

Recommendation / Suggestions for Further Analysis
An analysis of Camden issues leading to employment mismatch: What jobs are Camden residents working outside of
Camden, and where? Pre-recession data, especially in this sector, has limited value
as representative of current conditions. What is the ‘skills mismatch’ (i.e. what training could
make Camden residents a better match for jobs located in Camden)? Use LEHD data block level data to determine how far
Camden residents commute and their access to transit.
Crime / Violence
Gang Activity in Camden and New Jersey
New Jersey State Police conduct a voluntary survey of gang activity from local law enforcement every three years (last done in 2010)
Survey includes number and names of local gangs, number of members, gang related homicides and gang incidents in schools
Camden reported 21 local gangs in 2010 (number of members unspecified), tied for 10th among NJ municipalities, up from 6 gangs in 2007
Camden reported 4 gangs present in schools Anecdotal evidence from local news reports suggest gang
related violence, including homicides, have increased in the past three years
