Council is pleased to announce
the recent launch of the new
tourism website “Discover Balranald & Surrounds”. The
website is part of new
tourism branding which also
incorporates a new logo and
market positioning.
Council’s Tourism Coordinator
Connie Mallet said that the new
branding and new website is all
about promoting the Shire’s
uniqueness “where the
wetlands meets
the outback” and to also
promote the area
as an actual
destination to visit
and stay for a few
days, not just as a
stop-over. The
design of the new
logo represents
the coming
together of the
wetlands and the
outback.
The development
of the website
showcases all the
wonders that
Balranald Shire
and its surrounds
has to offer, and
uses stunning photos
illustrating the beauty of the area
which will play an important
emotive part of the traveller’s
decision making process. “We
want potential visitors to look at
the website and to instantly say
wow I want to go there!” said Ms
Mallet.
Along with the new website, new
visitor guides and other
promotional material are
currently being developed. New
social media pages and
applications have also been
launched and promotion is
planned using more traditional
media including direct
marketing campaigns to specific
audiences.
“Council is working on
establishing a solid foundation
first and then stepping up
marketing activities” said Ms
Mallet. “The website has been
developed in-house so updates
and changes can be made
quickly.”

Balranald Shire Council and seven other remote councils in far west New South Wales have been processed separately under the Fit for the Future reforms, which have so far resulted in the amalgamation of 42 NSW councils into 19 new Councils.
Far West Initiative chairman, John Williams recently reported that all councils in the Far West Initiative were likely to remain intact and not amalgamate.
The Far West Initiative is made up of eight Councils; Balranald Shire Council, Broken Hill City Council, Central Darling Shire Council, Bourke Shire Council, Brewarrina Shire Council, Walgett Shire Council, Wentworth Shire Council and Cobar Shire Council.
John Williams, former MP for Murray Darling said a document proposing a new model for local government in the far west would be put on public exhibition in July - "It'll basically outline what the proposal is, in respect to how we're going to form an organisation outside of councils that will sit there as a statutory body that will assist with the functions of council — assist and carry out some of those functions," Mr Williams said.
This is a positive outcome for Balranald Shire and I look forward to viewing the proposal.
General Manager Aaron Drenovski, Cr Steve O’Halloran and I attended the National General Assembly (Local Government Conference) in Canberra on 19th to 22nd June. The theme of the conference is Partners in an Innovative and Prosperous Australia, and focused on the role that local government plays in boosting productivity and showcasing innovation and best-practice. It was a very informative conference with positive considerations and outlook for Balranald Shire. Do you know of a rural woman who is working as a volunteer within our local government area and would like to acknowledge their contribution? The Rural Women’s Network (RWN) is seeking your help to identify volunteers within our community for the 2016 Hidden Treasures Honour Roll.
Nominations can be completed online at: www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/content/rwn/activities/hidden-treasures

Balranald Motocross Round 3 – Fun in the Mud
It was another successful day for Balranald Motorcross Round 3 on Sunday 5th June with a field of 64 riders tackling the muddy track. The rain stayed away, unlike round 2 which was postponed due to the rain (to be re-scheduled later in the year).
Unfortunately a senior rider suffered a serious accident, falling heavily late in the program. The Club extends best wishes for his speedy recovery.
The club now boasts an impressive 144 members; some from surrounding regions. Club president Barry Anderson said “Out of the 64 riders 33, were juniors which is fantastic!. The Club loves to foster new riders, it is a great family sport”.
Swan Hill based rider Ben Dickeson said “The track was awesome! I haven’t ridden it for years, it is the best it has ever been, the best track around by far”.
The next round at the Balranald track is on the 31 July and plans are also underway to stage a two-day enduro event on 27-28 August this year.
Roadworks Update
Continuing roadworks have been undertaken across the Shire this month. Patrol grading has continued due to wet weather. Construction and sealing works have commenced on a 1km section on Tapalin Mail Road and a 1.2km section on Marma Box Creek Road.
Construction works have commenced on River Street (Mungo St to McCabe St), O’Connor Street (from Piper St north), Cowper St (over the Levee Bank) and Bridge Road.
The new footpath in River Street, from Church Street to Dowling Street has been completed.
The carpark adjacent to the Tennis Courts has been sealed (pictured below) along with the vehicle access road around the main oval at Greenham Park.

Sealing works underway
Council recently completed sealing of O’Connor Street West and River Street which will assist the businesses in O’Connor Street West and Motorcross track users.
Cowper Street in Euston was delayed due to the rain but will be completed as soon as practicable. This will assist with entry to the Euston Cemetery.
