NEW CANAAN YMCA 2019 Impact Report

COUNT ON THE Y

Page 2: COUNT ON THE Y - New Canaan YMCA

Dear friends,

I am writing this letter in 2020. As we all know incredibly well, 2020 has been an unpredictable and challenging

year. As I look back at 2019 though, which this report details, and as we are currently navigating through

2020’s challenges, it is remarkably clear that a strong foundation is vital to an organization’s ability to weather

a storm.

Year after year, the support of our donors, volunteers, board, employees, and members helps us build upon this

foundation, making it possible that regardless of the need, challenge, or goal, the community can always count

on the Y.

Individuals of all ages, abilities, goals, and needs count on the Y every day. Parents know they can count

on the Y for safe and character-building opportunities for children to develop confidence, healthy habits,

and strong relationships, and for safe out-of-school activities for teens. Families with children and adults

with special needs know they can count on the Y as a place to belong, make friends, and celebrate abilities.

Whether deciding to reprioritize their health, or seeking the motivation of friends to train regularly, adults

of all health and fitness stages know they can count on the Y to achieve their goals. Our community’s

inspiring cancer survivors know they can count on the Y to regain strength in a supportive environment. Our

community’s seniors know they can count on the Y to remain active physically, mentally, and socially. And

those who need a helping hand know that they can count on the Y for financial assistance, ensuring everyone

has access to becoming healthier and happier at the Y.

When you’re part of our Y—whether as a member, donor, volunteer, or employee—you’re part of a team. We

support each other and motivate each other, and although we didn’t realize it at the time, this support was

strengthening our foundation to be able to persevere through the challenges of 2020 together.

Whether good times or challenging times, thanks to the dedication and commitment of our supporters,

board, members, and staff, the community can always count on the Y.

Sincerely,

Nurturing the potential of every child and teenWe believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve under the guidance of adults who care about them.

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY’S FAMILIESOver 100 children participated in the Y’s school vacation camp program, which provides a fun childcare option for families on school vacation days.

DEVELOPING A LOVE FOR SPORTS & WELLNESS Over 1,000 children built a sense of confidence and teamwork, while staying active through the Y’s recreational sports programs and leagues.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONEYouth recreational programs grew to offer more alternative programming options. These programs offer options for kids to stay active, make friends, and build confidence outside of traditional sports. 130 kids attended the “Youth at the Y” program, a monthly Saturday night event for grades 1-4.

GROWING STRONGER IN ANDOUT OF THE WATEROver 600 young athletes participated in the Y’s three competitive aquatics teams including swimming, diving, and synchronized swimming, developing goal setting, leadership, time management, and self-confidence.

SAFE OUT-OF-SCHOOL ACTIVITY FOR TEENSTeen and pre-teen use of the facility continues to increase through activities such as Middle School Night, open gym, socialization, and working out. Led by our teen board members, the Y also hosted study sessions during exam weeks open to all New Canaan High School students.
