David Thorburn, Chief Operating Officer, Clydesdale Bank proudly explained why it has further aligned itself with the CGCS as it enters the most exciting period in its recent history. He said, “Ten months ago we stood alongside the First Minister, Jack McConnell, and Louise Martin, Chair of the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland to give our total support to their athletes as they embarked on an inspirational journey to attend the largest multi-disciplined event in the world in which they compete under the Scottish banner. “We said we would be in it for the long haul and we are delighted to stand by that pledge by announcing our continued financial support at the 2010 Games and to back the Commonwealth Games Council as it prepares to bid to bring the Games to the city of Glasgow – an economic, cultural and sporting city of excellence!” As the magnificent Commonwealth Games farewell dinner, hosted by Clydesdale Bank drew to a close, there was some exciting news revealed. Even before the team stepped onto the plane for Melbourne, Clydesdale Bank, a major partner of the Scottish Team, has pledged its continued financial support to the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland (CGCS) for the 2010 Games in Delhi and will continue to back Scotland’s bid to bring the 2014 Games to Glasgow. This is a major boost for both CGCS and the 2006 team before we even get to Melbourne for this year’s Games. It also clearly demonstrates to the First Minister that Scottish businesses are getting behind Commonwealth Games in Scotland, making a solid contribution towards the endowment fund which he set up after the 2002 Games in Manchester. It is also fantastic that they have committed to back Scotland’s bid for 2014 in Glasgow.” The dinner was attended by Jack McConnell, First Minister, Frances Adamson, Deputy High Commissioner of Australia, Patricia Ferguson, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport, Liz Cameron, Glasgow’s Lord Provost, Stephen Purcell Leader of Glasgow City Council and key representatives of Scotland’s arts, business and sporting community as well as athletes and officials representing each of the sports competing in Melbourne. The other highlight of the evening was the preview of the team kit modelled by the athletes. On show for the first time was the full parade uniform, produced by Kinloch Anderson, leisure wear by Speedo and a selection of the sports specific kit. THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES COUNCIL FOR SCOTLAND NEWSLETTER

MELBOURNE 2006 – COMMONWEALTH GAMES ISSUE 5: SPRING 2006

In March 2005 Clydesdale became the first major partner committing a significant six-figure investment for the 2006 team. David Thorburn, Chief Operating Officer, Clydesdale Bank proudly explained why it has further aligned itself with the CGCS as it enters the most exciting period in its recent history.

As the magnificent Commonwealth Games farewell dinner, hosted by Clydesdale Bank drew to a close, there was some exciting news revealed.

MESSAGE OF SUPPORT

Scottish Hockey Chief Executive and Women’s Team Manager Brent Deans said: “We are in the fortunate position of having a great pool of players to select from in both the men and women’s programme allowing us to blend youth and experience to create two very exciting squads for the Games in Melbourne.”

This is the first time that Scotland’s men have qualified for the Commonwealth Games and they have been drawn in a tough group which includes Olympic and Commonwealth champions Australia, plus Commonwealth silver medallists New Zealand. Completing the group are England and Canada.

Hockey teams named for Melbourne

Scots in action

Melbourne 2006 will be my fourth Commonwealth Games as a broadcaster, but the first in which I will have an even greater interest as both Chairman of the Commonwealth Games Endowment Fund and of the Scottish Institute of Sport, which supports a large number of the Scottish

team.

It is a privilege to be so closely involved with such an outstanding group of Scottish sportsmen and women, who I know will do themselves and our country proud. The Games will provide special memories for all of us, and I would like to wish all members of the team, together with all the support staff, every possible success in performing up to and beyond their expectations.

”I hope all of your hard work pays off spectacularly!

Dougie Donnelly – Chair, Scottish Institute of Sport

Following the conclusion of a busy hockey competition programme for 2005, Hockey was the last sport to select their men’s and women’s teams for the Games. Both head coaches have named the 16 players who will travel to Melbourne, plus two reserves.

The women, who finished 6th in Manchester in 2002, have a slightly easier task ahead of them as two of their group,

Canada and Barbados, are ranked below them on the world stage.

New Zealand and England, however, will provide a tougher challenge for the Scottish team.

Welcoming the players to the Scottish Team, Paul Bush Chef de Mission said:

“I am delighted that hockey has named their teams and

this will complete the line-up of 169 athletes for Melbourne.

It is particularly pleasing that Scotland will have a men’s team at

the Games for the very first time.”

Thursday 16 March 2006

Friday 17 March 2006

As Scotland Chef de Mission for these Games I have every confidence that our athletes fully deserve their selection, having spent many years honing their skills to compete on the world stage against the best the Commonwealth has to offer.

Over the last four years the athletes have benefited from a range of agency support, helping to get them in the best possible shape for this key event so important to all Scots. During their time in Melbourne they will also benefit from the dedicated and experienced support staff, whose sole purpose is to provide the very best environment for them to perform.

Whilst success can never be guaranteed, I am sure that all of our team will give 110%, not only for themselves but in recognition of the family, friends, coaches, sponsors and others who have helped to make their participation possible.

I would also like to extend my thanks to our media colleagues, many of whom will be with us in Melbourne and who help to champion the cause of the so called minority sports. I am sure that throughout the 11 days of fierce competition, down under, we will give you all some great moments to talk about.

There are undoubtedly challenges ahead, but we are determined to do Scotland proud and we will work tirelessly to ensure that the Games is a memorable experience for all of the athletes and the thousands of people back home cheering on the team. I hope you will enjoy using the enclosed schedule to follow the action of the Scottish Team throughout the 11 days of competition.

Welcome to the team representing Scotland at the XVIII Commonwealth Games in Melbourne – arguably Australia’s sporting capital.

Scotland 7s squad named for the GamesIt was the Koala bears that weren’t playing ball at Edinburgh Zoo last December, when Scotland 7s coach Rob Moffat paid our furry friends from ‘down under’ a visit, to announce the Rugby 7s squad for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, 16 & 17 March. The squad is an exciting mix of sevens specialists alongside some of the country’s up and coming stars. The Army’s Mark Lee, Scotland’s most capped sevens player, will lead the squad down under while former captain David Gray returns from Exeter where he has been putting the English First Division side through their paces as a strength and conditioning coach this season. Regulars on the IRB circuit Oli Brown, Clark Laidlaw and Colin Gregor have been named in Moffat’s squad with flying winger Andrew Turnbull on schedule to make a timely return from a knee injury. Talented youngsters Ross Rennie and Ciaran Beattie have also been named. Scotland Under-19 flanker Rennie is an apprentice

with the Edinburgh Gunners and has been involved in Scotland’s last six IRB Sevens tournaments, whilst scrum-half Beattie made a double try scoring debut for Scotland 7s in the Autumn Test curtain-raiser against Argentina at Murrayfield in November. Having been involved at last season’s IRB tournaments in London and Paris, Ali Warnock returns in the playmaker role at stand-off with Gunner Rory Lawson also involved as a scrum-half having played for the Great Britain 7s team at the World Games in Duisburg, Germany during the summer. It’s an exciting time for Scotland 7s and the Commonwealth Games provides the pinnacle of international competition for the squad this season. Announcing the selections Louise Martin CBE, Chair, Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland said: “We are delighted that rugby has now chosen its squad for Melbourne. Rugby 7s has added an exciting dimension to the Commonwealth Games and I am sure their experience in Manchester in 2002 will stand them in good stead for Melbourne, enabling them to benefit from being part of a multi-sport Scotland team.” Coach Moffat said: “It’s a world event and one that is only held once every four years. We are heavily committed to the Games and it is a major focus for our season, alongside the eight IRB tournaments.” Scotland has been drawn against Niue, Canada and Fiji in Pool B in what will be a tough group, with Fiji being the reigning world champions in the abbreviated version of the game. At the last Commonwealth Games, held in Manchester in 2002, Scotland won the bowl competition.

Scotland’s bid to bring the Commonwealth Games to Glasgow in 2014 will get off to a flying start in Melbourne this March. While the primary focus of the Games will be on the Scottish Team, the 2014 Bid Team will be working behind the scenes to promote the Glasgow bid to full potential and to learn more about staging the Games.

Glasgow, like all other candidate cities for the 2014 Games, has been awarded 10 places on the Observer Programme. This takes place during the Games and allows participants to obtain a behind-the-scenes look at how to organise and run a successful Games. The Observer Programme will be invaluable to Glasgow, allowing the team to gather information and gain insight into the staging of a major games.

Outling the bid will be the other main purpose for travelling to Melbourne. The

Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games Bid heads down under2014 Team will make 2 major presentations to the CGF – one to the Executive on 11 March and one to the Assembly on 12 March.

The latter will be the first time that Glasgow has made contact with all 71 Commonwealth Countries, and it will be our first opportunity to get their feedback. In preparation for this, the Glasgow 2014 Team have prepared a 2014 video with 3D simulations of the proposed Games venues, a new bid brochure, leaflets, exhibition systems and a range of other items – from tablet to tartan! The Glasgow 2014 Bid Room will be based within the Rydges Hotel in Melbourne, so please drop by and pay us a visit!

And of course we will be out there in our free time cheering on the Scottish Team.

Good luck to all those participating from the Glasgow 2014 Bid Team!

Allan and Gavin will be meeting with athletes to provide mentor support, sharing their experiences of success on the world stage. They will be present at a number of the sports venues with Gavin in particular scheduled to support our Rugby 7s team and Allan the athletics.

Delighted to accept the new role, Allan said: ”I have fantastic memories of the Commonwealth Games in 1978 and 82. Gavin and I will be in Melbourne for people to talk to and ask questions. I had ups and downs as an athlete, as did Gavin, and I think we will be able to offer help and support.”

Rugby wasn’t a Commonwealth Games sport when Gavin was playing but he admits he would have loved to have been involved and is particularly pleased that Scotland is now participating in the Commonwealth Games 7s tournament. “I think the rugby will be fantastic in Melbourne”, said Hastings, “But I am looking forward to seeing all the different sports and I will be supporting all the Scottish athletes in Australia.”

Based at the Scottish Centre, Allan and Gavin will also be attending official team functions and meeting with Team sponsors and VIP supporters.
