Temple City named among California’s 50 safest cities for fifth consecutive year

Temple City ranks among the top 10 percent of all California cit-ies when it comes to safety, accord-ing to a list recently released by the leading home security website SafeWise.

Temple City came in at No. 40 on SafeWise’s ranking of “Cali-fornia’s 50 Safest Cities of 2018,” which weighs 2016 Federal Bureau of Investigation crime report statis-tics and population data from the state’s 482 municipalities.

This marks Temple City’s fifth consecutive appearance on the list.

To compile it, SafeWise first con-sidered each California city’s num-ber of reported violent crimes, in-cluding aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery.

To ensure fairness despite dif-ferences in municipal population size, the site also calculated the rate of crimes per 1,000 people in each city.

Per SafeWise, Temple City had 1.34 violent crimes and 15.88 prop-erty crimes per 1,000 people.

cannot do interfere with what you can do,” Ms. Georgino sends special thanks to her son Christopher, her sister Kelly and all her friends who make vol-unteering so enjoyable.

Outstanding Small Business

Temple City Barbershop

Born and raised in Temple City owners Josh Ramirez and Ste-ven Aguirre chose to open their independent small business in their hometown because they love the diversity of their community. For the past five years they have helped the boys and men of Tem-ple City look sharp and well groomed. Mr. Ramirez and Mr. Aguirre obviously do a great job because Tem-ple City Barbershop is more than a place to get a great haircut. It is a true community center where opinions, jokes and information are freely shared and enjoyed.

Mr. Aguirre would like to thank his par-ents Maria and Javier. Mr. Ramirez sends his thanks and love to his mom Eva Cruz and his girlfriend Andrea Bautista.

Outstanding ProfessionalAdam Chang, Partner

Kundani Chang Khinda Wilson (KCKW) Law Firm

KCKW Partner Adam Y. Chang is a trial attorney and award-winning former prosecu-tor with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office where he helped countless victims, and prosecuted thousands of vi-olent offenders and predators. Mr Chang was awarded one of the highest honors in his office, given to less than 1.5 percent of its prosecutors, for his success-ful prosecution of a gruesome double homicide gang shooting involving the Mexican Mafia in Azusa, CA.

At KCKW LLP, Mr. Chang focuses his practice on estate planning, wealth preservation, and advises a host of small busi-nesses ranging from interna-tional retail manufacturers to national tour companies.

He also provides legal com-mentary to Chinese TV LA 18, Chinese radio KAZN 1300, Chi-nese World Journal and Taiwan Daily Newspapers.

Married and the proud father of two daughters, in his spare time Mr. Chang enjoys playing golf, bike riding and advising the Arcadia High School Mock Trial Team where his students won the Los Angeles County Ti-tle two years in row.

Outstanding Business BeautifulTAT Health Group

This honor goes to that busi-ness that has improved the aes-thetic environment of the busi-ness community. Since opening two years ago, TAT Health

Temple City Barbershop is located at 5958 Temple City Blvd., Temple City.

Group certainly has added sig-nificant visual beauty to the city’s downtown business district with the renovation and redesign of their space on Las Tunas Drive across from City Park.

Just as their building is a merging of the modern and the ancient, TAT is operated by ex-perts in both Eastern and West-ern medicine who combine tra-ditional Chinese treatments like acupuncture and herbal products with modern medicine and nu-trition.

TAT is the abbreviation for “Tai An Tang,” meaning “Peace of Heaven, Earth, and People,” a

description bestowed by China’s Emperor 450 years ago to his per-sonal family doctor Dr. Ke Yung Jing when the doctor retired to open his own House of Chinese Medicine. Today, the TAT Health Group is supported by Guang-dong Tai An Tang Pharmaceuti-cal Co. Ltd., founded by Dr. Ke Shu Quan, the 13th generation successor of Tai An Tang.

The evening ended with a drawing for a plethora of raffle prizes after which guests mingled before heading home as always with dessert to go, this year the classic Vietnamese dessert che thai.

The Northern California city of Dan-ville, which earned the ranking’s No. 1 spot, reflected rates of .20 violent crimes and 8.13 property crimes per 1,000 peo-ple.

“Our City Council keeps public safety as our highest priority, and this ranking justi-fies that,” said Temple City Mayor William Man.

In particular, Man praised the efficacy of public safety initia-tives including Tem-ple City’s Neighbor-hood Watch program, investment in addi-tional nightly patrols, and partnerships with private companies such as Ring, which

offered partially subsidized video door-bells to Temple City residents.

Likewise, Temple City’s contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Depart-ment ensures continuous police coverage through the department’s locally based substation, Temple Station.

That coverage, coupled with ongoing saturation patrols and other preventa-

tive measures to reduce crime, will safe-guard the city and its residents for years to come. SafeWise’s complete list of “Cal-

Making Dentistry FunBy Jack Von Bulow, DDS

Jack Von Bulow, DDS, was named Top Den-tist by Pasadena Magazine (2011-2013). Temple City Dental Care is located at 9929 E. Las Tunas Drive, Temple City, CA 91780. Phone him at 626-285-3161 or visit his Web site at www.templecitydental.com.

Most interesting dentist in the world?

So, would you believe I’m now the author of three published books? And it all started right here, some 22 years ago, at the Temple City Chamber.

Back in 1996, the Chamber was looking to add some dental content to its monthly publication.

The previous DDS-type had burned out after three tries. My negotiations ended when I was guaranteed a mug shot to go with my article.

Over the last 22 years, I’ve written all over the local (not loco) place, including the Chamber (twice), the Pasadena Weekly, the San Gabriel Valley Weekly, the Arcadia Weekly, Pasadena Magazine, and currently, Arcadia Patch.com. The three books: Can we Smile, Molar Jockey Mem-oirs, and … The Most Interesting Dentist in the World are a collection of pieces I’ve written for local rags.

The stories have always been about people;

some of them family (including co-workers, pa-tients, and selected colleagues) and some of them imaginary.

There’ve been virtual interviews with the likes of Coach Pete Carroll, the Dalai Lama, Andy Rooney, Lane Kiffin, and even the current retired game-show host tweeting away straight outa the Oval Office. And, let’s not forget USC Trojan Football.

The context has been a view of dentistry and the patient experience from the lighter, human side.

The message has hopefully been more of an in-vitation to the community to find a happy dental home and a healthy mouth, body, and life.

The passion comes from home. When you’ve been the caregiver for your parents and your 100-year old Aunt Clara, it’s almost impossible not see-ing the people you serve as family.

And by the way, even though my hat size prac-tically goes to double figures, you’d be amazed by how humble I am … maybe even the most humble dentist in the world.

The title of book No. 3 was kind of thrust upon me, mostly because my film crew, set designer, and make-up artist won me a Dos Equis-inspired video contest. I even have a trophy to prove it.

Until next month, fight on! And, stay thirsty, my friends. Thanks for the opportunity.

If you are a veteran or the spouse of a veteran, then you may be eligible for VA pension benefits, and VA pension planning may be an option for you. VA pension benefits consist of monthly cash benefits paid to eligible wartime veterans or their surviving spouses and dependent children to help defray care costs. To qualify for these benefits, VA applicants must meet certain financial and medi-cal requirements.

Recently, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) published revisions to existing eligibility re-quirements for VA benefits. These new rules are effective as of Oct. 18, 2018. The key changes to the eligibility rules are as follows:

•Alook-backperiodof36monthsnowappliesto applications for VA benefits, and a penalty peri-od will apply to any asset transferred for less than fair market value

• The maximum net worth for a veteran toqualify for VA pension benefits cannot exceed

$123,600 (this number will increase annually with the increase in Social Security benefits)

•An applicant’s primary residencewill re-main an exempt asset, but the residential lot area cannot exceed two acres.

If you are currently receiving VA pension benefits or are interested in obtaining benefits, it is important to consult with an estate plan-ning attorney that practices in VA planning.

The qualification process for VA benefits can be complicated, particularly with the new rules taking effect, and the right attorney can devise legal strategies and employ planning techniques to help you qualify.

At my office, we practice in VA pension planning and can work with you to find the best planning strategy for you.

When you decide to sell your home, setting your asking price is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Depend-ing on how a buyer is made aware of your home, price is often the first thing he or she sees, and many homes are discarded by pro-spective buyers as not being in the appropriate price range before they’re even given a chance of showing.Your asking price is often your home’s “first impression,” and if you want to realize the most money you can for your home, it’s imper-ative that you make a good first impression. This is not as easy as it sounds, and pricing strategy should not be taken lightly. Pricing too high can be as costly to a homeseller as pricing too low. Taking a look at what homes in your neigh-borhood have sold for is only a small part of the process, and on its own is not nearly enough to help you make the best decision. A recent study, which compiles 10 years of industry research, has resulted in a new special report entitled “Homesellers: How to Get the Price You Want (and Need).” This report will help you under-stand pricing strategy from three different angles. When taken to-gether, this information will help you price your home to not only sell, but sell for the price you want.To order a FREE Special Report, call toll-free 1-888-300-4632 and enter 3016. Four of the top 10 most popular architectural styles in Los Angeles: Contemporary, Mediterranean/Spanish, Cape Cod, Victorian. *According to the real estate blog: www.opulencelahomes.com.

There are many architectural house styles in Los Angeles. Here are some of the most popular ones:

1. TraditionalTraditional homes are often

a blend of different historical ar-chitectural styles. They have the warm and inviting look of a tra-ditional house. Traditional house floor plan includes formal liv-ing, formal dining.

2. CraftsmanCraftsman style houses have

low-pitched gabled roofs, deep-ly overhanging broad eaves and large front porches beneath the extension of the main roof, wooden/shingled siding.

3. Cape CodTraditional Cape Cod

homes, originating from En-gland in the 17th century, are square, one or 1-1/  2  stories, with steep, gabled roofs.

4. TudorTudor style homes

offer steep sloping roofs combined with heavy looking decora-tive half-timbering.

5. VictorianThe style is defined

by the ornamentation of the prosperous Vic-torian era (mid-to-late 19th century), includ-ing curved towers and spindled porches.

6. FrenchThey are charac-

terized by their very steep roofs and sym-metrical proportions.

Some French style homes are made entirely of brick.

7. Mediterranean/Spanish

One of the most common and classic style of houses in Southern California.

Easily recognizable with the red roofs, arched entry way or window door tops and usually ex-terior white paint.

8. Tuscan Tuscan homes look similar to

Spanish/Mediterranean ones, but

often have a lot more ma-sonry and stone work on the exterior.

9. ModernCommon in the mid-

to-late 20th century, mod-ern homes are geometric, symmetrical, emphasis is on rectangular forms with no roof, oversized glass sliding doors and win-dows to allow lots of natu-ral light to come through.10. Contemporary

The United States Marine Corp will celebrate 242 years, Nov. 10, the same day as Tem-

ple City’s commemorative tribute to veterans.

For more information, phone Monique Weiland at 626-302-3366.

More than 800 veterans call Temple City home, and Saturday, Nov. 10, is an opportunity to thank them for their service.

Military and community members are invited to attend the city’s annual Veterans Day celebra-tion at Temple City Park. This year’s event will take place next to the park’s Veterans Memorial and feature speeches, an aircraft flyover and oth-er commemorative activities.

In addition, a community health fair orga-nized by HealthCare Partners will begin at 9 a.m. and last throughout the event. Forty vendors, in-cluding the Temple City American Legion, will host educational booths, providing informa-tion on topics ranging from healthy lifestyles to where veterans can access support groups.

“Temple City is proud to recognize its veter-ans, many of whom served in conflicts such as World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War,” said Mayor William Man.  “These home-town heroes represent an integral aspect of our

city’s history, and as they age, it becomes espe-cially important to honor and preserve their leg-acies.”

Prior to the event’s opening invocation, at-tendees will enjoy a traditional “posting of col-ors” flag ceremony. The Rev. Terry Keenan, a senior minister for the Santa Anita Church, will deliver the formal welcome at 10:30 a.m., and immediately afterward, a formation of vintage airplanes from Global Eagle Aviation Group will perform a patriotic flyover at 10:40 a.m. in rec-ognition of Temple City’s service members.

Guests will then hear remarks from Cmdr. Mark Tavera of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10219 and Mayor Man, with a free luncheon, live entertainment and a display of military memorabilia rounding out the day. Sponsored by HealthCare Partners, the presen-tation will include old uniforms, vehicles, hel-mets and weapons, providing a chance to inter-act with history.

For more information, phone the city’s parks and recreation department at 626-579-0461.

At SONshine House Pre-school, October was Health Month so teachers initiated many fun ways to encour-age students to “Think, Eat and Be Healthy!”

Ms. Yuna’s class in-corporated learning with hands-on cooking by mak-ing Monkey Bread with apples, raisins, bread, ba-nanas and pretzels. Start a conversation with your child of their own favorite foods and create your own Monkey Bread.

With the fall season in full swing, these Health Month activities are just one of many activities for Aarav and his classmates at SONshine House Pre-school. For more infor-mation on what SONshine House Preschool offers, stop by at 9141 Broadway or phone 626-285-3380.

Parents and their children still have time to experience the difference Kumon Math and Reading Center can make in their lives.

Temple City Kumon Math & Reading Center is offering parents and students a free two-week trial from Oct. 16 to Nov. 15.

The purpose of the free trial is to pro-vide new families the opportunity to ex-perience the Kumon routine and for cur-rent families to try a second subject.

In addition, the free trial is a call to ac-tion. Kumon wants parents to say, “I want

Chamber member Kumon free trial ending Nov. 15all of my children to have the benefit of developing their math and/or reading ability.”

The goal is to demonstrate to parents how Kumon works in preparation for long-term study both in the classroom and at home.

Kumon seeks to reach out to the com-munity and change the lives of the chil-dren.

Kumon Math & Reading Center is lo-cated at 9666 Las Tunas Drive. Visit www.kumon.com/temple-city, phone 626-287-8434 or email [email protected].

Pet of the Month

Columbo is a rather medium energy two-year-old Siberian Husky, weighing in at only 52 pounds.

He is good on leash and enjoys walks and sniffing his surroundings.

He is extremely affectionate and human-oriented. He likes to be close to his human and really enjoys cuddle time.

Columbo is new to the shelter and is still a little overwhelmed with noises and shelter life and he will often climb on your lap seeking affection or lean by your leg to be close to you.

If you are a fan of Huskies, you should meet Columbo. He will melt your heart with his soulful blue eyes.

His adoption fee is $145, which includes neuter surgery, a microchip, first vaccinations and a free wellness check-up at a participating veterinarian.

Visit the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, at 851 E. Grand Ave., San Gabriel, CA 91776.

Visit www.sgvhumane.org for information and photos of all the pets.

The shelter also provides animal control and licensing services to Temple City and is the friendly, local choice for low cost spay/neuter and vaccination services for your pet.

Discover the love behindColumbo’s blue eyes
