Numbers Extension - Counting To 50“Rockin’ To 50”

Lesson Objective: Children will practice counting to fifty with movements and rhythm.

Interactive Dialogue• Ask the children, “Do you think we can count to 10?” Everyone

count to 10 together (using 10 straws). How about 20? “Do you think we can count to 20?” (As a group or team count 20 straws into 2 piles of 10 each). Repeat question with 30, 40, and 50. (Place the straws in groups of 10 as you are counting.)

• Spend time questioning the children about which number follows 10? 20? 30? 40? Show them that 5 piles of 10 add up to 50 using the straws.

• Use the number flash cards to build 1-50 on the board. Affirm that 50 is a big number. Try clapping 50 times. Jumping 50 times.

• Ask the children if they can think of anything else where there might be 50 of the same things i.e. jar of 50 jelly beans, bag of popcorn with 50 puffs, box of 50 crayons, etc.

• Ask the children if they know how many stars are on the American flag? How many states in the US are there? Can they name any of the states? Use the Visual Aid pictures of the American flag and the United States.

• Pass out 50 small white stars evenly to the children in the class. Have the children place the stars on the board while counting each star together as they appear on the board.

• Using the lesson Bridging Activity 1-50 sheet, have the children create their own set of mini flash cards and use for further classroom discussion.

• Listen to the song Rockin’ To 50 and have the children observe as you do the movements.• Invite the children to learn the song and movements. Have them repeat the movements as you say

the words to the song. Play the song and have the children sing and do movements. Repeat.

1. Make a poster by collecting 50 toothpicks, cotton balls, ear swabs, dried macaroni noodles, and other small objects and gluing or taping them to poster board.

2. Count to 50 with the children “alternating turns.” (i.e. you say “1” the children say “2,” you say “3” the children say “4.” . . . )

3. Have the children practice writing the numbers 0-9 on 3x5 cards. Then, arrange two cards together and ask a child what number it is. (i.e. take the 4 card and the 5 card, put them together to make 45).

4. Place a small bag of jelly beans or M&M’s in a jar. Take guesses as to how many candies are in the jar. Then, count them together to see who had the best guess. The winner gets to divide up the candy!
