For those who have participated in our Annual Survey 2014, we thank you. In fact, we welcome members’ feedback anytime and take your feedback seriously. For example, SCC responded to the feedback that the railway sleeper path on Hole 11 fairway was unnecessary and can cause damage to the buggies. On that note, we have improved the path and made the drive into Hole 11 a more pleasant one.

SCC has introduced a new award for its staff – the Outstanding Staff Award. This award will replace the STAR and BEST Awards. We urge all members to encourage our SCC staff, especially those who have served you well, to submit a note of appreciation or compliments. A grateful staff will serve you better.

Cheers,Eric Goh

In case you haven’t noticed, we are already standing on the half-way point of 2014! Time goes by us so quickly, sometimes. So it’s nice to take a step back once in a while, spend some time with the family, spend some time with our friends, have a nice relaxing game of golf, and just be happy.

Annual Survey 2014You may have noticed the surveyors going around in June to ask for your feedback. This year, the Annual Member Satisfaction Survey was conducted in June and I would like to thank all those who participated in the survey. This is the third time we’re conducting the survey. Some of you have commented that the survey questionnaire takes a long time to complete. I agree that the survey questionnaire is long, but it is necessary if we want to know precisely what you are satisfied with, and more importantly, what you are not satisfied with. We therefore needed to go into some depth in asking those questions so that we can take meaningful follow-up actions where necessary, to close the gaps in our service standards. The other alternative would have been to conduct many smaller surveys throughout the year, but we’ve decided that that would subject our members to even more survey fatigue.

I would thus like to thank you for the patience and understanding you’ve shown in enthusiastically filling up the survey forms. By knowing where we’ve fallen short, we can work at improving ourselves. By knowing where we’ve done well, we can work at repeating those successes.

Improvements To The Golf CourseFollowing some feedback that you have given to the Club on the golf course, we’ve made some improvements

around the golf course that hopefully will enhance the golfing experience. One of the areas that golfers spoke about was the soggy area between Holes 12 and 13. Many of us would slice our tee shots into that area under the trees, and because that place was still cow-grass and soil, many of us lost our balls (for no rhyme or reason) in there – adding to the frustration of already slicing the tee-shot. We’ve re-done that place now. It has been sand-capped and turfed with zoysia, and I’ve received feedback from many relieved golfers that they enjoy the improvement that has been made there.

Another area we received feedback on was the railway sleeper route into the Hole 11 fairway. Some of you have also told me that you get a “free massage” every time the buggy drives along the railway sleeper path. Well, we’ve also improved that path and made the ride into Hole 11 a smoother one.

The surrounding area behind Hole 7 green has also been improved. Aesthetically, the green surround has been re-turfed with zoysia to make it more pleasing to the eye. The buggy path towards the Hole 8 tee box has also been smoothened over to make the ride there a more pleasant one.

Repairing Pitch Marks On The GreensLately, we’ve noticed that there are unrepaired pitch marks on our greens. This is despite our Starters briefing golfers that we should be repairing the pitch marks on the greens. Repairing those pitch marks is very important to the health of the greens. It is also equally important if everyone wants to enjoy a good round of golf.Unrepaired pitch marks cause the grass in their indentations to die. Apart from leaving an ugly scar

Hello Everyone!

on the green, it also leaves a depression in the putting surface, causing putts to go off-line. And we all know how frustrating that can be. Furthermore, it takes far longer for an unrepaired pitch mark to recover than one that has been repaired. Repairing a pitch mark thus restores the smooth surface of the green, and allows the grass to recover much quicker and be healthier.

So let’s all understand that we golfers have an obligation to help take care of the golf course – including the greens. Let’s all start repairing our pitch marks, and, if there isn’t a group of golfers behind us waiting for us to clear the green, repair one or two other pitch marks as well. All this will go towards a better golfing experience on our golf course.

Outstanding Staff AwardThe Club has introduced the Outstanding Staff Award to replace the STAR and BEST Awards. We would like to thank all of you for your nominations in the STAR Awards, and we feel that it is a good time now to refresh the way we reward our staff that have provided you with excellent service. The Outstanding Staff Award is a quarterly award that will be presented to staff who have provided good service to our members and guests. The nominees are taken from the compliments or feedback that we receive through our feedback channels (yellow feedback form, website, etc). The winners of the Outstanding Staff Award are then selected by a Selection Panel comprising members of the Executive Committee and Sub-Committees.

So, I would encourage you to write in to us about any of our staff who have provided you with excellent service, who have delivered happiness to you, or who have gone beyond their call of duty to render assistance to you.

This would certainly encourage the staff to provide even more good service to you.

For the quarter of April to June 2014, the winners of the Outstanding Staff Award are:

(i) Zura (Customer Service Assistant)(ii) Vijay (Male Changing Room Attendant)(iii) Ruby (Events/Marketing Coordinator)(iv) Biba (Golfing Assistant)(v) Jamil (Chief Marshal)(vi) Rahman Idros (Buggy Attendant)(vii) Hadi (Swimming Pool Attendant)

Congratulations to all of them!

CONCLUSIONIn closing, let me just announce that our Annual General Meeting this year will be held on 11 September 2014 in the Banquet Hall. More details will be announced in the website, notice boards and also our Facebook page. We’ll also be sending you a notice of the AGM via post. Do come down for the AGM this year.

Let me also take this opportunity to congratulate all those Members who have been promoted this year on the 1 July 2014. You truly deserve your promotion, and we are proud to have you serving our Nation.

And to everyone, have a Happy SAF Day, a Happy National Day, and a Selamat Hari Raya Puasa!

LIGHTNING IS A SEVERE HAZARD THAT MUST BE VIEWED SERIOUSLYIntroductionAccording to media reports, Singapore has an average of 0.35 lightning deaths per million people each year, compared to 0.2 in Britain and 0.6 in the United States, making it one of the lightning capitals of the world. The months of April, May, October and November are the most lightning-prone because of the intense inter-monsoon weather conditions. In addition, with an average of around 167 thunderstorm days a year, lightning strikes are a potential safety hazard for anyone engaging in outdoor activities in Singapore.

Sharing of Lightning IncidentOn 28 Apr 14, my regular golf kaki had a close encounter at Tanjong Puteri. At about 1330 hrs, it started drizzling, and within a few minutes, they heard a loud bang. One of the palm trees at the golf course was hit by a bolt of lightning, and it truly shattered them, and they immediately headed for the nearest shelter. The club only sounded the siren for lightning risk a few minutes later. The picture taken by my friend is illustrated below.

Lightning Safety Policy in SCCThe Meteorological Service Service, National Environment Agency (“NEA”) conducts a continuous watch for occurrence or expected occurrence of thunderstorm and lightning within an area of 6 km radius of SCC. Once SCC has received notice 15 to 30 min in advance of lightning risk, the marshals will be informed and the siren will be sounded 10 minutes before the actual time to ensure that all golfers are safe and under shelter.

ConclusionSCC insists that all members adhere to the lightning safety policy. Failure to do so is at your own risk and we accept no liability for any member or guest who fails to co-operate with any decision to suspend play and close the course. It is not the responsibility of staff to retrieve clubs, equipment or trolleys from the course during a lightning storm where play has been suspended, as their safety may be jeopardized. Please note that golf buggies do NOT give protection from lightning.

2nd Ladies Cohesion Day 17 May 2014

Six flights of ladies took part in the fun event organised ‘for’ and ‘by’ the ladies. The format of play was Greensome, allowing the players to interact and strategise every shot while enjoying golf the way they never played before, and for some, to places they have never been before. The ladies were further divided into Red and Blue, to add even more fun into the game, and to save them the hassle of having to choose what to wear.

The sassy red team! The bevy of blue beauties!

The post-game “makan kechil” saved the stomachs of many, and the KTV Lounge facility provided a golden opportunity for some to show off their vocal talent too. Everyone was seen enjoying themselves with an abundance of food, drinks, friendship, chatter and laughter. The red team won themselves colourful tote bags, while the blue team received the Inspiration Book as a form of encouragement. The event was well-received by the ladies and all are looking forward to the next event to be held in August 2014.

Ideas for the next cohesion game are already brewing. Stay tuned for the next cohesion day specially organised just for you ladies. The Ladies Sub-Committee would like to thank our Club Captain and some SCC non-golfing members, whose presence gave us much encouragement and support. Last but not least, our heartfelt thanks to the staff of the golfing department, who assisted us in making the 2nd Ladies Cohesion Day another successful event. Till we meet again!

Golf Tips

Better consistency has helped the method rise in popularity, but teaching professional Rick Smith says course conditions have also played a role. As fairways have become firmer and more tightly cropped on tour, players have adopted the shot to help ensure better contact around the greens. The straight-arm pitch creates a shallower angle of approach into the ball than can easily be achieved with the classic wristy method, Smith says. The traditional style is useful in the rough or when the ball needs to stop quickly on a green, because it can impart more height and spin on a shot. But from tightly mowed grass, the straight-arm technique helps prevent hitting a pitch fat or thin, Smith says. The club skims along the turf instead of digging into it.

"Another thing to consider is that with advances in wedge technology, players no longer have to rely only on wrist action to create spin or height," Smith says. "A 60-degree wedge does a lot of the work.“

Dufner says the straight-arm method is so effective he now uses it for most

shots inside 120 yards. Not only did it help him win this year's PGA Championship, he led the tour in 2012 in proximity to the hole on all greenside shots, with an average leave distance of six feet, four inches.

"The shot really keeps the face angle consistent at impact, and that's real important if you want to know what the ball's going to do," Dufner says. "The upper torso turning in the backswing and downswing is the motor for the motion.“

Dufner isn't the only one who has used less wrist action on longer shots. Phil Mickelson did from as far out as 150 yards on the hardpan fairways of Muirfield during his victory at the British Open, says his coach Butch Harmon.

"It's a three-quarter knockdown," Harmon says. "He'd make a wider takeaway and control the shot more with the body. This gave him a shallower approach into the ball, so it was easier to catch it flush and take it out of the air.“

Golf Tips

Although many pros have seen good results with the straight-arm pitch, where it could make the biggest difference is in the average amateur's game, says Sean Foley, whose students range from Tiger Woods to weekend golfers. Foley says all of the tour players he coaches have used the shot from time to time, "but the guy who works 40 hours a week, goes to his kids' tee-ball games, coaches soccer, etc., he needs to use this shot all the time. He needs the most forgiving technique he can find.“

Stan Utley, one of golf's most acclaimed short-game coaches, agrees that straight-arm pitching could be good if you don't have time to develop a wristier method. But instead of focusing on keeping the wrists quiet, the real key to this technique is to keep the club directly in front of your body as you pivot back and

through, he says. If you look at the photos of Adam Scott (above), you'll notice that his elbows stay in close and in front of his stomach throughout the shot—a sign that he's controlling the action with his body pivot. The hands and wrists aren't completely frozen, Utley says, they're just quiet."Pivot with the club in front of you and finish on your front leg," Utley says. "That's what you need to get out of this trend.“

That, and getting used to sticking your pitch shots close.

(1 April To 31 June 2014)Outstanding Staff Award

“I have faith in Sembawang Country Club for providing good golfing experience to guests and members. Thanks to the GM and staff for giving me the confidence of inviting guests to play and dine at the Club.

Well done Eugene. Sembawang Country Club has a pool of dedicated staff. They rendered good services from booking, registration, to providing a helping hand during our interaction golf and lunch today (SMRT Management Golf held on 22 April 2014). Many of my colleagues enjoyed their first time golfing experience with the Club. All from a great GM Eugene, Ruby, Biba, Albert, the marshals, for giving them a memorable experience at the Club.

Also, the good food that we had at the Banquet Hall. Thank you OceanSpoon for the good services as well.”- Emin Ong, 22 April 2014

“Hi Eugene (GM, SCC),

Many thanks again for all the assistance and excellent service in making yesterday’s SMRT BOD-Management Golf cum Lunch (22 April 2014) a great success! Of course, this would not have been possible without the dedication and service attitude of many, if not all, of your staff from golfing, to registration, locker rooms, and even the Golfers Terrace. From the service excellence perspective, a special mention to:

Ruby & Biba – their unwavering understanding and service with a smile despite some of the last minute changes and having to stay back beyond 6pm (the extra mile).

Jamil – just simply reassuring from him that he’ll do all the necessary from moving all the drinks from the office to equipping all the buggies with the cooler boxes + drinks and bananas, at the start and at the crossover. Many thanks once again, and looking forward to having more games at SCC, cheers!”- Goh Poh Lee, 23 April 2014

“On 6/5/2014 at about 0730 hrs, at the 14th teebox I felt unwell and [my flightmate] helped to call the ambulance buggy. [Marshal] Rahman Idros turned up promptly. In the buggy, by that time I already felt better. I told him that I had a backache and nausea a while ago. He told me to just sit in the buggy and he will help me to put my golf bag and trolley on the buggy. While heading to the reception, he suggested to call an ambulance as he had seen someone who had a heart attack with no chest pain or breathlessness before. The GM attended to me and I was sent to KTPH A&E. As it turned out, I had a minor heart attack and an angioplasty was done on me on the same day. I am very thankful to the Management of the Club for their prompt actions, especially to Rahman, whose actions and prompt help assured me that I was in good hands straight away in that incident. I must also thank everyone in SCC who played a part in providing me such excellent service.”- Low Tan Sow, 9 May 2014

“Othman is a wonderful service staff who is caring and helpful always. He is polite and wishes members with a sincere and beautiful smile.”- Lim Pai Tong, 5 June 2014

Dear Ruby, we really want to thank you and your team for all the support and assistance that you provided us last Saturday (7 June 2014) to ensure the event went well. Really appreciate your kindness and understanding towards our family.”- Stanley, 10 June 2014
