Awareness

Popularity

A variety of measures have been developed to assess the relative

popularity and awareness of entertainment and sports brands:

❖ Brand Popularity Index (BPI) – a unique, composite index of brand

popularity, based on all awareness and attitudinal measures;

❖ Unaided Awareness – ‘top of mind’ entertainment brands volunteered

by consumers;

❖ Aided Awareness – consumer awareness of a tested list of popular

brands;

❖ Brand Attitudes – consumers’ like or dislike of mentioned brands rated

on a five point scale;

❖ Brand favourites – consumers’ selection of any three entertainment or

sports brands as their favourites.

Note that the Brand Popularity Index (BPI) can only be calculated for

specifically tested brands, due to potential response bias.

The purpose of these measures is to evaluate the extent to which brand

popularity translates into interest in merchandise featuring tested

entertainment and sports brands. Respondents who are aware of tested

brands are asked the following questions:

❖ Ownership - do you own or have you purchased anything with this brand on

it? And when was the last purchase.

❖ Purchase intentions - would you consider buying anything with this brand on

it in future? If yes, when will be the next one?

❖ Product categories - which categories of product would you consider buying

with this brand/character on it?

When aggregated, the results provide a general indication of brand

application to merchandise. Some brands are already very successful

licensed merchandise properties, whereas others represent potential

opportunities. These measures also highlight brands that may have

already peaked and are losing their merchandise appeal.
