Black lives matter. As Americans rallied on June 19 from Boston to Oakland,

Calif., the date symbolized a dramatic change of awareness. Many white adults had not previously heard of Juneteenth, which marks the anniversary of the last slaves discovering they had been freed, yet scores of Caucasians participated i n t h e d e m o n s t r a t i o n s , awakened to racial inequality by a recent series of murders of Black citizens, primarily the May 25 killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis while in police custody.

Count the predominantly white country music industry among the sensitized. Over 700 people tuned in for the first of two Zoom panels, “A Conversation on Being African-American in the Nashville Music Industry,” as the business observed Blackout Tuesday on June 2. Numerous companies took Juneteenth off to focus on inequality and to stand in solidarity with Black fellow citizens. Capitol Nashville released Mickey Guyton’s illuminating “Black Like Me” to radio via PlayMPE on June 5, RCA Nashville issued Kane Brown’s unifying “Worldwide Beautiful” on June 3, and Wheelhouse unveiled a remix of Granger Smith’s “That’s Why I Love Dirt Roads” — featuring Black Christian rapper Lathan Warlick — on June 4.

The Smith/Warlick collaboration was particularly significant. Neither artist was aware of the other until Smith’s wife, Amber,

discovered Warlick online, setting off a chain of events that or-ganically brought the two together.

“I told him how little I knew about his genre, and he told me how little he knew about mine, which really made it special to me,” says Smith.

That pairing is one of four bi-racial tracks being worked that feature a country artist from Wheelhouse’s parent com-pany, BBR Music Group. The company also has two Blanco Brown recordings with white acts — one blended with Par-malee on the inclusive “Just the Way” and one with EDM artist Diplo on the pop/dance track “Do Si Do” — plus a Jim-

mie Allen duet with pop singer Noah Cyrus, “This Is Us.”All of those cuts had been completed before national events

BBR ex-ecutive vp Jon Loba had noticed the successful pairings of Tim McGraw and Nelly on “Over and Over” and Jason Aldean and Ludacris on “Dirt Road Anthem.” So when he took BBR’s top label job when BMG acquired the company in 2017, Loba felt strongly that the Nashville division should have its own Black artists. then when I heard his story, it’s like, ‘This is what I want to say as my first of-ficial signing under the BMG label.’ I wanted to say, ‘Things are different.’ ”

They certainly have improved. Following harmonica player Deford Bailey’s introduction via the Grand Ole Opry in the 1920s, country waited another 40 years before Charley Pride emerged as its first hit-making Black singer. An-other African-American artist didn’t achieve mainstream success in the genre until Darius Rucker stepped out from Hootie & The Blowfish as a solo artist in 2008. Since then, Allen, Kane Brown and Blanco Brown all have notched legiti-mate hits on the Country Airplay or Hot Country Songs charts, while Billy Ray Cyrus’ pairing with Lil Nas X on “Old Town Road” became a 2019 signature and a Country Music Association Award-winner.

But things are still not equal. The country business has only a handful of Black executives, likely a function of long-standing separatism, established when the then-fledgling record industry targeted poorer demographics by marketing “hillbilly” music to rural whites and “race records” to Blacks. Those distinc-tions became self-perpetuating cycles, particularly for Black professionals who might not expect to be welcome on Music Row.

“If they don’t see themselves, why would they want to work there?” asks Guy-ton rhetorically. “I think if more applied, they would get jobs here.”

Efforts are being made to level the proverbial playing field. BMG has man-dated a diversity program, and Loba predicts an increase in minority hires in Nashville’s business over the next three years. “There will be mechanisms in place to fix that,” he says. “I think the country community’s really good about doing the right thing, and I think there will be focus there now.”

The synergy is already there at Sony Music Nashville. RCA Inspiration se-nior vp/GM Phil Thornton — while speaking on a June 17 Zoom panel, “The Sounds of Social Justice,” presented by Music Biz — noted enthusiastically that SMN president/CEO Randy Goodman sought his involvement for an upcom-ing event involving an unspecified TV network. Thornton appreciated “being a part of that conversation and not being limited to just, ‘You can only do gospel’ — They’re like, ‘No, come into country music. You have valuable input,’ ” he said. “To see that input now being implemented, it’s inspiring. It’s encouraging.”

Corporate initiatives and increased sensitivity may not be the only reason country sees more racial overlap in the future. The National Museum of African-American Music is set to open this fall across the street from the historic Ryman Auditorium, and the venue aims to be a bridge between the R&B community and other sectors, including the city of Nashville, Music Row and the American music business in general.

“Our job is social change. Our job is to communicate to the community. Our job is to tell stories in ways other than producing records and putting out music,” said NMAAM president/CEO H. Beecher Hicks III in the Music Biz panel. “What we’re doing right now is trying to figure out how we build that bridge, what it looks like and how we can be the best partner.”

The most important aspect in building that bridge might simply be making the connection. Racism is ingrained in the American psyche through decades of marketing, law-making and cultural stereotypes. Its presence was reinforced on June 21 when a noose was found in the garage of Bubba Wallace, NASCAR’s lone black driver, in Talladega, Ala. And yet when Blanco Brown broke one of those stereotypes, as a black fan attending country shows before he signed his BBR deal, he never felt threatened or out of place.

“I remember going to Sam Hunt concerts and Luke Combs concerts, and when I walked in the crowd, I just felt comfortable to the point that I forgot about the fact that there was hatred in the world,” he says. “I didn’t have to think like that.”

Following the rash of recent racially charged murders — of Ahmad Arbery in Glynn County, Ga.; of Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Ky.; and of Rayshard Brooks in Atlanta — a June Pew Research Center poll showed that two-thirds of Americans support the Black Lives Matter movement. A bundle of acts — including Lady A, Maren Morris and Thomas Rhett — have voiced their support, though Guyton would like to see more chime in.

“I’ve been really trying to push for country artists to openly state that they support Black lives,” she says. “It is so important for people to know that racism is not accepted in country music.”

Still, nothing makes that statement more obviously than hiring a Black ex-ecutive, signing a Black artist or collaborating with one, as Smith demonstrated with the “Dirt Roads” remix.

“To be an activist in my way, I just want to show love,” he says. “I want to show that we are all inclusive, that me and Lathan can love each other as broth-ers, that we could share in creativity, and we could share in emotion. We could share in the deepest levels of humanity because we’re both human beings.”

Scotty McCreery notches his third consecutive and total No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart as “In Between” (Triple Tigers) rockets from No. 8 to the top of the list dated June 27.

In the tracking week ending June 21, the song increased by 25% to 26.7 mil-lion audience impressions. It drew its biggest gains on WIVK Knoxville, Tenn. (up 324,000 impressions); WKHK Richmond, Va. (up 260,000); WNSH New York (up 247,000); and KSCS Dallas (up 235,000).

The track’s 8-1 flight is the second-greatest to the chart’s summit in the list’s 30-year history. On the Oct. 12, 1991-dated survey, another song with “between” in its title leapt 9-1: Ricky Van Shelton’s “Keep It Between the Lines.” (Five songs have soared 7-1, all in 1991-94.)

“In Between” reaches the Country Airplay apex in its 63rd chart week. It completes the second-lon-gest ascent to No. 1 after Travis Denning’s “After a Few,” which reached the top in its 65th week on the June 13-dated list. The 63 weeks that “In Be-tween” took to hit the top also marks the second-most total frames for a title after the 67 for “After a Few,” now at No. 9.

McCreery, 26, won American Idol in 2011. He earns his third Country Airplay No. 1, all in suc-cession from his album Seasons Change, which launched as his third leader on Top Country Al-bums in March 2018. “Five More Minutes” led for a week that month, and “This Is It” reigned for two weeks in February 2019.

“When we released Seasons Change two years ago, I was hoping I might get my f irst No. 1 song,” McCreery tells Bill-board. “Now I’ve been blessed to earn three No. 1s, which means more than I can say. I love that ‘In Between’ has connected with people like it has, espe-cially during this time of social distancing. I don’t believe any of us are just one thing or the other; I think we’re all somewhere in between.”

He adds, “I must thank country radio for their support, my fans for always

believing in me and my music, and both my management team at Triple 8 and my label team at Triple Tigers for all their hard work day in and day out.”

“In Between” — which McCreery wrote with Jessi Alexander, Frank Rogers and Jonathan Singleton — is his 11th charted Country Airplay title. He debuted on the list in June 2011 with his No. 15-peaking Idol coronation single, “I Love You This Big,” and followed with “The Trouble With Girls” and

“Water Tower Town,” which peaked at Nos. 17 and 38, respectively, in 2012. His next two proper singles became his first two top 10s, both in 2014: “See You Tonight” (No. 8) and “Feelin’ It” (No. 10).

For “In Between” to cross the finish line in its 63rd week on Country Airplay means that it had to provide solid research to radio programmers who lean heavily on such scores. “Yes, ‘In Between’ has been a consistent high-tester for us,” says KKBQ Houston program director Johnny Chiang. “Like Denning’s ‘After a Few,’ I can’t remember the last time that ‘In Between’ has been out of our active currents list. It’s incredible the career resurgence Scotty has had since he joined Triple Tigers.” (Mc-Creery signed with the label in August 2017 after leaving Mercury Nashville.)

CHESNEY ‘NOW’ UP TO 53 Kenny Chesney nabs his 53rd top 10 on Billboard’s airplay-, streaming- and sales-based Hot Country Songs chart as “Here and Now” (Blue Chair/Warner Music Nashville/WEA) hops 12-10.

The song pushes 4-2 on Country Airplay, up 8% to 25.2 million in audience. It also drew 6 million U.S. streams and sold 1,000 in the tracking week.

Chesney’s run of 53 top 10s, which includes 23 No. 1s, started in June 1995 with the No. 6-peaking “Fall in Love.” Dating to his first week in the tier, he boasts the most top 10s of any act, ahead of Tim McGraw’s 50 and George Strait’s 42 in that span.

Country Airplay AIRPLAY MONITORED BY

RANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 148 stations by Nielsen Music. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Nielsen Audio- copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2020, Nielsen Audio). The list of all Country Airplay chart reporters can be viewed on Nielsen Music’s platforms.

BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in

audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they

are not still gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen Music) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCEMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay lists the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.

COMPOSER DEAN PUSHES NEW TECHSongwriters invent for a living, but Nashville’s Barry Dean (“Heartache Medication,” “Pontoon”) ventured into a new realm with the development of a wheelchair mobility device that could prevent thousands of injuries to seniors and disabled people.

Dean co-founded LUCI with his Denver-based brother, chief technical of-ficer Jered Dean, launching a smart device with cloud-based alerts that help prevent users from tipping their wheelchairs or banging into walls and other objects. Wheelchair accidents resulted in more than 175,000 hospital visits in 2010, according to the National Library of Medicine, and 30,000 of those required the patient to be admitted.

The device was a labor of love for Barry. Frequent co-writer Troy Verges (“Day Drinking,” “Wanted”) had a grandmother who suffered multiple injuries in a wheel-chair accident, and it raised concerns for Barry, whose 19-year-old daughter, Kath-erine Dean, was born with cerebral palsy and has lived her entire life in a power chair. Barry hoped he could find an adapter that would solve tipping and collision issues, but none existed.

“We realized that if this was going to happen, we needed to do it,” he says. “It felt like it had been given to us to do — I don’t know how else to say it — so that’s when we officially sort of kicked it off and went to work.”

Thanks in part to Barry’s contacts in the music industry and Jered’s product-design history, which includes rockets and dialysis machines, they built a team to handle the production and legal aspects of LUCI, a sys-tem that attaches to the best-selling power chairs. It incorporates a sensor, developed in tandem with Texas Instruments, that Barry says is the first nonautomotive millimeter-wave radar device. LUCI uses cloud technology to gauge stability and mobility, and it also provides battery-usage information, which is surpris-ingly rare in the power-chair industry.

LUCI has obvious safety benefits, and its accident prevention may extend the life of the wheelchair, too. But it also provides psychological support for the user.

“The wheelchair is more than just a thing,” explains Barry. “It becomes a part of their body image. We know, after three years of study, it’s indepen-dence and mobility and freedom. That’s what it represents.”

The company is marketing LUCI to a network of clinics and taking preorders for delivery in the fall with a suggested retail price of $8,445.

Katherine inspired Barry to write “God’s Will,” a song that became his first hit when Martina McBride released it in 2004. Now Katherine is key in developing an additional business that brings its own level of inspiration.

“The clinicians are opening their doors,” notes Barry, “and saying, ‘We want this. We’ve been waiting for this.’ ”

A pair of hit-making acts who have laid low of late are prepping new releases. Rascal Flatts announced a new seven-track EP, How They Remember You, set to arrive July 31. The project is named after a new single that was released to country radio via PlayMPE on June 19, and it closes with a cover of Kenny Rogers’ hit “Through the Years” that previously was introduced during a CMT tribute to Rogers. Also on the way is Josh Turner’s Country State of Mind, an Aug. 21 release that features new versions of some landmark country titles — such as Keith Whitley’s “I’m No Stranger to the Rain” and Alan Jackson’s “Midnight in Montgomery”— plus covers of a few deep country tracks. Joining Turner on the album are John Anderson, Kris Kristofferson, Randy Travis, Chris Janson, Allison Moorer, Maddie & Tae and Runaway June.

The uncertainties of COVID-19 have led to plenty of date changes for events. Jimmy Buffett cited coronavirus in backing out of plans to make his Grand Ole Opry debut on June 27. The Charlie Daniels Band rescheduled the Vol-unteer Jam from Sept. 15 to Feb. 22, 2021, at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, with 38 Special, The Allman Betts Band and blues artist Cedric Burnside added to a lineup that already featured Charley Pride, Mickey Gilley, Johnny Lee, Travis Denning and Big & Rich. Kenny Chesney moved Chillaxification Tour dates in 18 stadiums from 2020 to the summer of 2021. And ABC pushed back the Luke Bryan-hosted CMA Best of Fest special from July 9 to July 13.

The Judds, Trisha Yearwood and Kelly Clarkson are among the celebrities who will have stars added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame this year. Dates have yet to be revealed, but they are part of a wide-ranging 2021 musical class. Also being honored: soul group The Chi-Lites, folk/pop artist Don McLean, hip-hop act Missy Elliott, classic-rock band Jefferson Airplane, Mexican singer Ana Gabriel and jazz icon Charlie Parker.

Willie Nelson’s discography includes a song about a bandmate, “Me and Paul.” His book history will soon include a memoir with keyboardist Bobbie Nelson, Me and Sister Bobbie: True Tales of the Family Band. Doubleday has scheduled its publishing for Sept. 15.

The weekly Country Songwriters and Country Producers charts are based on total points accrued by a songwriter and producer, respectively, for each attributed song that appears on the Hot Country Songs chart. As with Billboard’s yearly recaps, multiple writers or producers split points for each song equally (and the dividing of points will lead to occasional ties on rankings).

All data measures U.S. activity as of the week ending June 18, 2020. All units counts are rounded to the nearest thousand. Album consumption units — also known as albums plus TEA plus SEA — consists of album sales; track-equivalent album (TEA) sales whereby 10 tracks equal one consumption unit; and stream equivalent albums (SEA) whereby 1,250 paid and/or 3,750 ad-supported audio on-demand streams (OAD) equal one consumption unit. Nielsen Music/MRC Data has reprocessed year-to-date figures to account for a change in methodology, resulting in a restatement in streaming data from a provider, which has resulted in a shift in some previously reported data, most notably for video streams.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE JUNE 22, 2020 | PAGE 15 OF 18

If practice makes perfect, the guy in Jordan Davis’ “Almost Maybes” is a cheery graduate who got a passing grade in romance after doing the proper homework.

And now that he has his degree, he’s able to look back at all his relationship failures and find the silver lining: “There wouldn’t be no you and me right now/If it weren’t for the almost maybes.”

It’s a happy, uptempo look at the same subject as Rascal Flatts’ “Bless the Broken Road,” though this version of that all’s-well-that-ends-well story is unlikely to become a wedding song or the title for a Christian movie.

“I have gotten that reference from the first time I turned it in to somebody on my team,” says Davis. “They pretty much had referenced that and said it’s a happier ‘Bless the Broken Road,’ but that never came up in the [writing] room. We never really thought about it that way.”

“A lmost Maybes” just celebrated its f irst anniversary. Davis wrote it on June 17, 2019, with Hillary Lindsey (“It All Comes Out in the Wash,” “Girl Crush”) and Jesse Frasure (“Some People Do,” “One Big Country Song”) at the Rhythm House office on Wedgewood Avenue in Nashville, using ideas from both his co-writers.

Lindsey brought in the two-word title, and Frasure had a reggae-influenced musical track. A little brainstorming helped them cast the “almost maybes” as the close calls that weren’t quite right, the series of heartbreaks and the bad decisions that inevitably become a person’s dating history. Key, of course, is that the subject is indeed history and not current events.

“My wife used to always say that her mom told her, ‘You have to kiss a few frogs before you find a prince,’ ” recalls Davis. “Now I’m not saying that I’m a prince by any means, but unfortunately, you got to get through some frogs until you find one that resembles a prince enough to where you would stay.”

The three writers kicked off the song from the top, knowing the payoff that awaited them at the end of the chorus. Since it was intended as a tune for Davis to perform, they launched into it by recounting his first major breakup: a re-lationship that came crashing down at a bar in his hometown of Shreveport, La. The public setting tells the listener everything they need to know about the singer’s introductory lesson.

“That’s never a good spot to have a breakup,” says Davis with a laugh. The second, a long-distance romance, was likewise from his past, as was

the third one — dropped in at the start of verse two — which found him split-ting up with a girl his mom was hoping would become part of the family. Be-fore that stanza ends, it turns into a vague summation of all the other loves, leaving some questions about his score card: Were there maybe three or four other romances? Did he go through 100 women? That romantic checklist is the trickiest part of “Almost Maybes.”

“You’ve got to do that stuff eloquently. Otherwise, it takes the sweetness out of things,” notes Frasure. “If you’re not Bruno Mars, it’s very difficult to talk about past lovers.”

Lindsey got the chorus off to its start — “Here’s to the almost, so-close/It’s over, out-of-the-blues/Here’s to the hey, I-think-we-need-to-talk/And the it-ain’t-me-it’s-yous.”

That last part was a bit of a mistake. The cliché breakup line is, of course, “It’s not you, it’s me.” And Lindsey suggested that they change it. Davis was adamant that it stay as is.

“I was told one time that they wanted me to know that this was 100% me,”

he admits with a laugh. “This was not them. So I thought that line was kind of cool and left-footed and obviously kind of personal to me.”

Leading into the “almost maybes” payoff, they found an inventive rhyme — referring to some of the exes as “the weeds that looked like daisies” — that is arguably the best line in the song. Before they could finish, they scratched out a bridge that recounted the depths of a breakup — the “all-alones” and the “didn’t-work-outs” — and showed that the singer had explored the entire spectrum in his journey, both “the girls next door and the bat-shit crazies.”

It’s the moment when they walked up to the line of acceptable commercial country taste without completely crossing over.

“Not only do you have to make sure you’re paint-ing this singer in a good light, you can’t shit all over the exes,” says Frasure. “There’s a lot of thought that goes into it. The singer needs to look like the hero and the likable one, but we’re not going to drag people through the dirt.”

Frasure produced the demo, emphasizing the reggae influence with guitar spikes on the upstroke and several island-flavored drum fills.

“There’s a little bit of a Maroon 5-ish aspect to it,” he says.

Producer Paul DiGiovanni was impressed with that foundation, though he also was mindful of Davis’ established sound. “Almost Maybes” was already a strong contender for the next single, and he endeavored to give it the right level of Jamaican influence during the tracking session at Blackbird Studio in November 2019. Drummer Nir Z matched live percussion against the programmed

rhythm in the chorus, while Derek Wells developed a simple guitar intro to replace the reggae-tipped upstrokes.

“We added that intro riff just to give it a little fingerprint right off the bat,” explains DiGiovanni. “I think it’s in the turns and the outro and everything, just to give it one more signature sound.”

It’s thickened with a keyboard counter-melody that DiGiovanni overdubbed against it.

“It’s a low-fi, filtered-out keyboard thing, and then there’s also like a Mel-lotron layered on there, too, doing the swirly, violin-/cello-sounding thing,” he says. “They’re both playing the same exact thing, just layering each other.”

Bassist Tony Lucido aided the reggae aspect, too, with a part that moves around much more than a typical country bass.

“We did a couple of passes where it was just super-simple root notes, and then I think the last time we did it, I said, ‘Just go crazy,’ ” recalls DiGiovanni. “If I needed to fall back on the simplicity, once I pulled it in and started work-ing on it, I had those takes there. But I think we used a lot of the stuff from when he just kind of went crazy.”

Lindsey added prominent background harmonies, and DiGiovanni threw a faint male voice in key places underneath.

MCA Nashville released “Almost Maybes” to AM/FM country radio on May 11 via PlayMPE, employing one small, but significant edit: It changed “bat-shit crazies” to “out-there crazies.” The single rises to No. 56 on the Coun-try Airplay chart dated June 27 in its third week on the list. It ranks at No. 38 in its fifth week on Hot Country Songs, benefiting from an easy-going vocal that glides much more smoothly than the life’s education the song represents.

“This one was so easy,” says Davis. “The songs like that — ‘Singles You Up’ or ‘Take It From Me’ — are so effortless and they just fit right in your comfort zone. And ‘Almost Maybes’ is definitely right there.”

On June 24, 1995, Tracy Lawrence stormed to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart with “Texas Tornado.” The song’s author, Bobby Braddock, also cowrote George Jones’ iconic 1980 No. 1 “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” among other leaders.

“ Te x a s To r n a d o” b e c a m e Lawrence’s sixth No. 1 of eight to date on the chart. He has posted 22 top 10s, with his first 19 singles all reaching the top tier. “Sticks and Stones” marked his arrival in November 1991 and became his first No. 1 in January 1992.

Originally from Atlanta, Texas, and raised in Arkansas, Lawrence, 52, most recently topped Hot Coun-try Songs on June 23, 2007, with

“Find Out Who Your Friends Are,” which surged when stations started playing a version with guest vocals by Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw. Lawrence most recently released the LP Made in America last August, and he hosted a benefit for the Troy Gen-try Foundation on Feb. 5 in Nashville. The lineup included the late Gentry’s former partner Eddie Montgomery of duo Montgomery Gentry.
